As someone who played with a full set of hybrids for a number of years I used to carry a "normal" gap wedge and lob wedge for shots around the green and bunkers. Also, work your yardages out on a driving range!
Bingo. I have a 52, 56, and 60 in my bag along with a boatload of hybrid irons. It seems like Rick was intentionally handicapping himself here for the sake of content.
Yes. I have been using a set of Cleveland hybrid irons for years but they look less and less like hybrids as you progress to the shorter clubs. I happily use the hybrid SW out of bunkers and within 100 yards of the green but I have also bought 50 and 60 degree wedges

Rick you sold me a month ago I purchased a full set hybrids A company that makes 1 to GW 11 clubs great price. The irons 1 12°and 2 15° not using much great for low runners. So out of the out bag for now. They do take a little bit of time I think because you can see the face and positioning. They do launch high I'll tell you that much. 2 weeks ago purchased Kirkland driver for $215 deliver to my front door. I like it more then my G410. I love my Cleveland launcher halo XLs, though I carry 3 wedges too. As a high handicapper they give some much confidence, highly recommend them. Glad to see Rick giving hybrids a plug.
Hey rick i damaged my shoulder a coupler years ago and thought golf was over as I can't swing full any more. Hybride irons have brought the love of the game back to me. Take a bit of getting used to but love them. Great vide
Another awesome video Rick. I think the key to these are for newbie’s like me (I have the Ram hybrid set). I can slow down my swing and have better control but still hit a decent distance. Interesting enough the Ram set has a standard 56 sand wedge and I’ve added a standard 60 lob wedge as well.
Chipping and round the green even with something like Cleveland HB's which are all hollow takes practice, if you catch it right in the middle it pops off like you've swung 20% faster, if you catch it out of the bottom, it's just normal. I game the old Cleveland Highbores, but I've got traditional 8i and lower.
Good video, Rick. I like having a 4H and 5H in place of my long irons (never really hit them well), but keep my short irons and wedges for a bit more control and spin when I’m in closer.
When I think of hybrid irons I think of the Cleveland Halo or the Cobra Rails, not what you’re using. Would love to see a video on those if you haven’t already.
Nice set o' clubs Rick and that was a cool round. Been using hybs for almost 2 years now, Full set 3-PW combined with cavity back wedges. I'll never touch another set of regular irons nor my other sets of blade wedges (gave'em away anyways, LOL). They're easier to hit from ANY turf, go longer, higher and flight straight. If needed there's no problem working the ball or hitting'em under the wind or trees. And yar right, they're lighter. I lov'em! Weird thing is I used to aim at the trees to get outta the woods, I mean, you gotta be so good to hit a tree aiming at it, most likely it would be a miss, but with hybrids it's different as you'll hit the darn tree not 2 outta 3, but 3 outta 2 every time! Gladly nowadays these guys keep me away from the woods LOL
I’ve wondered for years why Rick has been so hesitant to replace long irons with hybrids. It’s about shooting low so don’t be afraid to make the golf a little easier. Tour pros put them in the bag, there’s no shame in it! Those 4 and 5 hybrid shots looked effortless. With all due respect, better than most 4-5 iron shots I’ve seen him hit
Cleveland golf did the same thing but it gets more progressively like a hybrid the longer the club gets. Might wanna try that, bc the wedges and shorter irons are more normal
Nice play! You should do a "Break 75" on one of the courses where you didn't with a set of Hybrid Irons but keeping your SW and LW in the bag. That could be a fun test of these game improvement clubs.
Great to seeing you having fun Ricky, can't wait to see you and Pete going head to head.. Need more of the four amigos in the near future.. 18 hole stroke play.. The longer the videos the better 🙂
Ive only watched first hole but that second shot wasnt club issue. Would you use a full set of hybrid clubs except your wedges if would shoot lower scores?

So much fun to watch! Just a thought m8. . . .but perhaps a trip to the range first to get some numbers on your distances would have served you well before knocking around the course with those :) As a disabled golfer using mobility aids, I think these hybrid irons could really help my game!
I am 38 and have several bulging disc in my back and have so much pain when I golf that I got a 5,6 and 7 hybrid and they’re hands down my favorite clubs in the bag and my back doesnt hurt near as much putting easy swings with my hybrids instead of coming down compressing the balls with irons. The Callaway AI Smoke HL hybrids are game changers for me.
Back in 1977 I played a round with another fellow who had all wood clubs. His wedge was about 8 inches long due to the slope of the face and the bottom was curved to match the arc of of swing. Even his putter had a wood head.
Love this video. Would really like to see you go for it with a full bag including 4- W hybrids plus your traditional wedges for close to the green. I’ve always wondered if really good golfers are held back by their ego. I feel like one day someone will break with tradition and play a tour event that way.
I'm a senior golfer and I've been using a full set of hybrids for a couple of years. its still about knowing your distances. they definitely make it easier for me.
Would love to see you try it again after taking a little time to practice with the higher lofted clubs. Take away all the strokes the wedges cost you and you had a pretty good round going
Without the obvious pitfalls of the wedges around the green, this should show people that a bit of forgiveness will help your game... Even a PGA pro is playing well with them
The head covers do match your signature hat, so that's a plus at the very least. Probably strange not hearing the heads bounce off one another as you walk to the next shot
Noticed Rick wasn’t using “Old Rusty” the Ping putter. I’m still in disbelief that a $2000 (full experience) Ping putter rusted the first time Rick used it in damp conditions. 😮 🤘😎 RS
This was great fun to watch. I have two hybrids a 5 and a 6. As this is my first ever set of clubs I had no idea that hybrids were at all unusual, I just accepted the set as it was. I like using them but as I’m a total novice they are just what I’ve become accustomed to. I always enjoy Rick’s no nonsense style of video, very entertaining.
Loved that video, more hybrids please! They're usually used cos they're forgiving. For that reason I'd love to see Cleveland or Wilson hybrids rather than what looks like a gold painted novelty set. For what it's worth the hybrid users I know all use standard iron wedges and 9s.
Just started watching and on the first hole pulls driver!! Why not 200 yard and then 100 yard shot to a) test the clubs and b) play sensible to score (as Golf Sidekick would to shoot par).
Bro, this has bothered me for so long. I guarantee Rick could score better if his course management was better. Golf sidekick is so smart with course management. He helped me shoot a miracle round of 82, and I was a 14 handicap at the time, and I barely make it 200 yards off the tee!! Course management works, and I really hope Rick learns that one day
Totally agree. Love Rick’s channel, but Golf Sidekick is the channel to watch to learn course management to shoot lower, with the swing you have. That is so relatable to us amateurs! Would love to see Rick try that approach to see the difference in his scores.
My 3-wood or Hybrid rarely is better off the tee than driver, so why lose distance? I think Ricks course management was fine here - only he should have worked out the distances of the hybrids in advance. Enjoyed this vm.
Maybe, but playing the first hole with two sensible shots to avoid a very difficult chip with SW would be better course management? Rick is good from that 120-140 yards so why not leave that distance and take less risk off the tee?
Let’s get a series about these clubs. Bring on some pros have them play nine with these clubs and have a leaderboard. Would love to see Bryson try them
Hot take, I think above 15 handicaps should have hybrids up to the PW then a thick soled SW. Makes striking the ball and the game overall easier in my opinion. Plus the hybrid PW could be the main chipping club since it’s hard to fat, as well most people can’t and don’t need to hit high soft chips very often except in bunkers which is where the SW comes in. It’s what I and several friends started with and we all went roughly from scoring 110-120 to low 90s in 2-3 months. Getting a ball in play and with good course management is more important so playing with something easy to hit is the way to go. Love the videos like these Rick
Hi, thanks for the videos. If you see this and you're looking for video ideas it would be great to see you compare the Cleveland and Wilson game improvement irons. Thanks
Great video, as always. Suggestion: maybe get a general idea of how far the clubs will go before starting the round. Hit a few off your launch monitor. The point of the video is "do these make golf easier". Answer - not if you fly every green by 20 yards bc it's too much club.
Great video, Rick. Love your “experimental” content. Gives us all something to think about but mostly it is just fun. I wouldn’t expect many to change to playing with hybrids exclusively but perhaps there is a place for one or a few in every bag.
When I was growing in the late 60s, there was an older guy at our course who used to play golf with a full set of woods and no irons, way before the invention of hybrids, with a 15 wood being the highest lofted club in the bag. My dad and I played with him several times and he was deadly with his woods. I don't remember him ever missing a fairway or green and he would always be par or better. In fact, he once told me that he was getting tired of golf because it was too easy. What a nice "problem" to have.
Would really like to see you do a comparison between Cleveland Halo and Tour Edge Hot Launch E523, I wouldn’t say that they are a true Hybrid , more like a hybrid and iron love child…
Good to see you review some clubs that might be good for us high handicapers. I like Matt's review of Eleven golf clubs. I liked them. I would never use a hybrid for my wedges but the rest of the clubs for sure.
My first set of clubs had hybrids 4-6. They were fantastic. I've watched several other golf you tubers try hybrids and they all concur with you: hybrids are great for 3-9 but then switch to real wedges.
I bot a set of the Forgan of St. Andrews hybrids. But I actually got on well with the 7 to PW better than the 3 to 6, which did not go as long as my Cobra One Length irons. 🤔 By the way...would like to see you review the Caley irons, and the RAM irons, which are both less than half the price of the big name manufacturers
I tried hybrids. Did not work well for me. I instead switched to woods, down to 7 wood, irons after that. I love this combo. I hit the woods much, much better than the longer irons. My golf buddy has a full set of hybrids, but has a regular sand wedge and 60 degree wedge. He does well with that combination. Everyone is different, so use what makes you score the best.
Thanks Rick for this plus the original review - you seem to be the only person to have done so. I didn't know about these sets so got me researching. There are loads on the 'pricier' Eleven set but I wondered if you have considered doing one on the Forgan of St Andrews F35 set which seem to be the cheapest on Amazon? There are reasonable reviews from those who have bought them. As always, your reviews are much valued. (Sorry if you're seeing this again but my original comment seems to have disappeared.)
Enjoyed that, these all hybrid sets are a godsend for anyone like me who can't stop shanking....if you don't care what other golfers think then you'll find the game easier with these.....but Rick's right about the wedges, especially sand....need a normal one for chips and bunkers
Put off watching this for a few days but, as always, very entertained with this post. Pretty obvious with back spin being absent. I really enjoyed your post with Bryson and the head start of 10 strokes about 3 months ago. Really pleasing therefore that ½ way though the Masters, Bryson is sharing the lead !
Great video Rick. I’d be interested seeing you play a course with super game improvement clubs (non hybrid) on the first 6 holes, Player’s distance irons on 6 holes then blades on the remaining 6 holes.
still kind of new to golf, have some cheap older prostaff wilsons from my dad. He also has a touredge 4iron-wood in there that i love. Thought id look up to see where i can get some more. Realized that that they are not super common clubs that are made.
For me, I currently rotate through my bag, depending on the course, driver, 3, 5 woods, 3, 4 hybrids, then 5-9 irons, and an asortment of wedges. Old school Odyssey Ice Hot. The hybrids are great, I occasionally swap in 3 and 4 irons just because. Maybe you should consider it. At least you have the space and the sym to figure out you're gapping and create the best 2024 set for your game. I know i need to take a look now that weather is breaking in NY
I've been playing the Ping G hybrids 3 through 6 for 5 years and added the G425 7 last year. I will never go back to irons above the 8 again. Since playing these hybrids my scores have gone from upper 80's to upper 70's.
I don't know about having hybrids in the scoring clubs, but there's a strong argument to be made that lots of high handicappers could improve their medium-game by replacing clubs up to 7 iron with hybrids. The problem may be overcoming the golf ego of having 4 or 5 hybrids in the bag! I'm a 6 handicap with good clubhead speed, and 4 years ago I replaced my 4 and 5 irons with hybrids. I get teased about it from my golf buddies, but it's worth having a high, straight, boring ball flight from 190 yards out!
Great Vid Rick! Could you pin me its my b-day
NO.

Loved that video, more hybrids please!
They're usually used cos they're forgiving. For that reason I'd love to see Cleveland or Wilson hybrids rather than what looks like a gold painted novelty set.
For what it's worth the hybrid users I know all use standard iron wedges and 9s.
Quality content from RS.
No one, and I mean no one, come to this channel for nice, boring, sensible golf. It’s the journey that we enjoy most!
Great video. I loved how much you seemed to be enjoying yourself.
Let’s get a series about these clubs. Bring on some pros have them play nine with these clubs and have a leaderboard. Would love to see Bryson try them
that putter is going to serve you well this year Rick, like you say the the longer hybrids can help a lot but totally agree about wedge shots
Thanks Rick. I agree that hybrid wedges are 'asking' a bit much. At least, the 'big stick' worked well when you used it.
Worked well playing him in to trouble where he didn't have a shot and killing his score???? Are you playing long drive challenge or golf?
Hi, thanks for the videos. If you see this and you're looking for video ideas it would be great to see you compare the Cleveland and Wilson game improvement irons. Thanks
Great video, as always.
Suggestion: maybe get a general idea of how far the clubs will go before starting the round. Hit a few off your launch monitor.
The point of the video is "do these make golf easier".
Answer - not if you fly every green by 20 yards bc it's too much club.
Another great video. I now have 3,5 and 7 hybrids in my bag. They’ve made a big difference to my game
Good to see you putting well again
Great switch from the claw grip! Working well!
The tour edge bridges that gap especially well .. they just look like game improvement irons looking down instead of full on hybrids
Those both kinda sound like the Wilson Launchpad "irons".
Good to see you review some clubs that might be good for us high handicapers. I like Matt's review of Eleven golf clubs. I liked them. I would never use a hybrid for my wedges but the rest of the clubs for sure.
Bit of a learning curve with these clubs as far as distance goes .
No eagle sauce?😢
I really enjoyed this video. I'd love to try all hybrids. I need all the help I can get
That was an awesome entertaining eagle. Job well done 👍
Surely any new clubs you would have to recheck club distances
10:50 -- LOL 😂
Great video Rick, where did you buy these amazing hybrids?
Rick, you should've done a gapping session in the studio before heading out on the course.. you probably would've scored a bit better😂🤣 😂😂
Great video Good putting 👍
Good to see you back in the UK, you seem to enjoy it!
Great vid Rick. I’ve got Adams 4,5&6 hybrids. I’m high handicapper and not to hybrid wedges!
I've been playing the Ping G hybrids 3 through 6 for 5 years and added the G425 7 last year. I will never go back to irons above the 8 again. Since playing these hybrids my scores have gone from upper 80's to upper 70's.
Hi Rick, great Video, what make of Golf Shoes are you wearing?
Great to see the good rick shiels vids
Rick you should do a break 75 with these but replace sw and pw with your normal wedges.
There's no room for ego in club choice. Ego just means you miss short.
W vid bro… I love my talormade m4 hybrid
Half way through the video and you just made me laugh out loud, tapping the pitching wedge saying "keep it warm" hahahaha
Love this vid, would love to see you play a round with the cleveland launcher xl's. Just to see how you would play them
Rick...that was so much fun...
Thanks mate...
Made me laugh after grafting on site all day...
That was brilliant
Great to see you so chipper!
I am so jealous. What a beautiful course. Thank you for taking us along
When he walked away saying "might be a stupid idea" 😂 I'm a fan now
