I think breaking is harder for golf (relative to milestone-reaching for other things). For example, my tee shot and approach shots have improved like tenfold but the scorecard basically says the same thing as before.
Another tip that helped me when I was learning. 5 strokes per hole is 90. If you bogey a par 4, not a problem. Double bogey a par 4 and then bogey a par three still averages 5 per hole. Takes the pressure off if you have a bad hole. Makes you think when you put one in the woods and have to chip out instead of being stupid and trying to be a hero. Only I more stroke for the mistake and you have a chance of making it up on an easier hole. Play smart and it’s only 1 less stroke and you are in the 80’s.
those sand shots can be a real killer for many golfers. honestly, when the ball isn't jammed up against one of the banks and there's a lot of open green fairway on the hole, i've had extreme success using a fairway wood out of the sand trap and not "wasting" that extra chip shot just to punch it out. maybe not for others but has certainly worked for me, good luck on the course!
These tips may not get you to break 90 when you are a high handicapper, but when you are somewhere between 18 and 36, they are very useful. Don't be brave, be smart, I think that's what you are saying. Solid advice! Thanks Rick for reminding me!
On the greens at my local course it's possible to putt the ball off the green and down a hill which requires a very difficult short range lob on to a (very raised) green followed by several tense, very gentle putts (to ensure it stays on the green). It's literally the case sometimes that if your ball doesn't go in the hole it will go 10 feet past and or into oblivion. But hey there's no bunkers!
A came across a few instagram shorts like that giving the most useless advice. "How to break 80: don't miss the green and only 2 putt" fucking useless content out there.
Great video Rick, the point I think people are missing is that this will help golfers who are close to breaking 90 get there. Someone who plays 110 - 120 will need to get to the mid-90s to get the most from this video. Even a high handicapper can use these tips to get their scores down, but if you're always hitting your tee shot into the woods, good luck. Keep 'em coming Rick, love the tips and they have helped my game quite a lot.
I was 120’s in June.. thanks to Rick I’m now high 90’s… ready to take the next leap I feel like I’m close. Just a couple small adjustments shaved 20 strokes
Thanks. I've been able to go from 120s (Summer 1), to 105 (Summer 2), to high-mid 90s because of your instructions. I hope to break 90 this summer. Thanks for the simple, straightforward explanations.
@@GolfQuestChannel I've had ups and downs this year but overall progression. I've broken 90 about 13 times since and even 85 once. But a LOT of things to improve upon. Thanks!
Great advice and break down man! Luv me some 101 teaching. My golf game: this week at Yoche Dehe GC. 94. Last week at Turkey Creek GC. 86. Difference between the two is the "hero" shots. Brilliant man!
Being confident helps tremendously!!! Guessing myself got me +7 4 holes in... Went +4 the next 14 after I stopped second guessing myself. Could have broke 80 if I did!!!
Rick, you completely changed my game this summer. I finally got the fix your slice video tips down after weeks and weeks of practice and repetition. I hit maybe 1/10 as a slice now, sometimes they go straight left like you said they would but most are draws down the middle. I honestly can't tell you how happy I am, I have NEVER HIT A DRAW IN MY LIFE.
The 3 tips sound simple but in the heat of a round it is amazing how often the hero shot is attempted. I took your tips onto the course today and broke 90 for the first time ever, in fact I had an 86!! While chipping out of the trees sideways hurt in the moment, it definitely helped the final score. Thanks so much Rick.
Last year I finally broke 100 (I was a casual for years and I’m finally taking golf really serious) and within a month of practice I almost broke 90. This year I am confident and I will break that 90. Wish me luck!
Your videos are the best. Clear and not over complicated. Currently trying to break 120 so we will see how these tips go on Wednesday. Going for the hero shot is going to be hard to stop myself doing.
My major problem is putting just being able to judge speed needed and trajectory and you put it very simple and easy to understand for me. I can’t wait to use your tips on the course
@@JM-qn3tf if the hole is downhill, try visualizing the hole 6-8 inches closer to you. I pick a speck or a leaf right there and that’s my new hole. After that I remove to actual hole from my view. Reverse if the hole is uphill. I have fine-tuned this by sometimes aiming at the front lip of the hole and the back lip of the hole.
Ahahahahaha the best part, is how relatable this all is. It’s really nice to hear other people with a similar golf skill level to me. My best game has been a 90😂
HUGE lesson here I always forget when I'm in trouble - "skip to heroics, don't make it worse". That will be my singular focus next few rounds. Thank, Rick.
I just had the back nine of my life this sunday! (Been golfing for a bit over a year) I got a 42 on the back and finished with a 94 after a typical 52 front. First time breaking 100 as well! Now on to breaking 90!
Awesome video ! I just started playing again about four months ago after not swinging a club for 12 years, I just shot a 88 last week thanks to videos like this ! It can be done with patience and a game plan you stick with
Such good advice. Particularly the bump and run, I never do this and I can really see how it will reduce the chances of shanking it around the green. Your videos are brilliant Rick 💪🏼
Bump & Run is probably the most important shot for a weekend golfer to learn. I play with my friends and I see them pulling out the sand or pitching wedge just off the green and I try to explain why this is a better option. Most get it but some don't and then send their ball 40 yards over the green.
Ive been really implementing my bump and run this year and its helped me a ton...ive chipped one in for birdie a few weeks ago but have been consistently putting myself in range for a nice one putt par/bogie
No question about it, Rick’s tips here are fantastic! As he mentions, the crucial part of breaking through a scoring barrier, is to apply more manageable shots. Take out the magical or miracle escape shot, and focus on the easier option. A double or even worse, triple bogey are killers, and destroy your confidence and mindset!
This is the hardest part. Behind a tree, 170 yards to the green.. the smart play is to punch out to the fairway & pitch to the green.. you still try to go for it. End up hitting the tree now another tough shot & still don’t get it on the green. Regret it every time.
Rick, Thank you so much for the bump and run "Bonus" tip!!!! It was invaluable to me and paid instant dividends the next day when I played my round after watching this!!!! My chipping has been horrible till yesterday! That tip easily saved me 8-10 strokes and the best part was I shot 86! Thanks again and keep the excellent content coming!
The tips on getting out of the sand and using an 8 iron around the green have really helped me. They've saved me several times and getting me close to shooting 90. Just need to get more consistent with the rest of my shots.
When I first started playing golf, I’d always try to make a great shot out of trouble and I’d hit a great one 1 out of 10 times. One day, I got paired with an older gentlemen. I hit my shot into the trees and he noticed I’d tried to get on the green and ended up hitting a bad shot and tripled the whole. Then he uttered the words that I have lived by even after 20+ years. “When in trouble, don’t make it double”. That same round, I found myself in the trees again (Harding Park has a lot of them). Walking up to my ball, I kept muttering “when in trouble, don’t make it double”. I got up, chipped it laterally back into the fairway with a 7 iron, hit a really good third and made a decent putt for par.
it's crazy how i always forget that chipping back into the fairway is an option. Always too hyper-focused on how to hit towards/closer to the pin no matter what heroics are involved
@@jicalzad it just happened to me this weekend playing at my brothers CC. I slightly pulled a drive and ended up behind a tree on a par 5. Instead of trying to advance it as far as I could, which would have been a tough shot, I chipped it out back into the fairway and left myself 225 to the pin, into the wind. Water on the left, I hit a high draw with my 2 iron and landed it on the green, albeit still having a long putt but it was for birdie. I ended up 3 putting it for a bogey which I was happy about consider where I was.
OK Rick, you finally got me to subscribe to your channel. All of those tips you just showed I use and they work. I am 60 and due to 2 bad car accidents in the last 10 years where I have been cleaned up, my back is now pretty bad and I am now 60. Before the accidents, I played of 9 and was pretty reasonable at hitting fairways of the tee. But now, I have lost 50 yards and accuracy is not a good. So Bogies are my friends, pars are a bonus and birdies are just fantastic. But I can still break 90 on a regular basis by playing within myself, keep ego in check and just work with what I have. My short game is what keeps my score down, and my putting is good, rarely 3 putt. Oh, I now play of 16, which is still reasonable and I am happy with it. Cheers from Australia.
I'm loving these videos. I have broken 90 quite a few times, but.... I haven't played in over 10 years other than going to the driving range literally a couple of times. I'm planning on playing some this year. I think these videos will help me enjoy the game. I made my first birdie with a bump & run shot. Got the itch.
Aim way left. Now go further left... a little more left... now, you've reached the parking lot. Get in your car and scream obscenities about how its the clubs fault.
And that's where you leave the driver at home. 3 comfortable clubs to the green on a par for instead of hoping a drive is findable and hitting out of a trouble spot. Also stop playing long tees that's what whites are for
I taught myself these tips years ago and lowered my index from 28 to 20 (all from tournament scores, i.e., play by the rules and putt out). 1) My par is 90, bogey golf. I don't worry about making par. If I make a good chip or make a long putt, great, I make par, maybe even a birdie. 2) I usually use a 3 hybrid to get out of jail. Using Rick's technique, I can skim the ball just off the turf 100 to 150 yards and I'm back in the hole. 3) I use the bump and run (the "Scottish chip" as I call it) from 100 yards in whenever there's no hazard in front of me, like a lake or bunker. Takes a lot of practice to gauge how hard to hit it, but I'm usually somewhere on the green putting for par. 4) I practice 30' & 40' putts a lot, just for speed, and I practice 6' in, that's it. All I can say is this has served me well and made the game more fun.
Absolutely! Good tips sir. I read a book one time very similar to your tips, "How to play Bogey Golf", and it was essentially the same philosophy. Kind of like, just lower your expectations, shoot more conservative, and relax for a better outcome. Thanks for your video!

How did it go? Did you crack 90?
@@GolfQuestChannel I've had ups and downs this year but overall progression. I've broken 90 about 13 times since and even 85 once.
But a LOT of things to improve upon.
Thanks!
@@thegreattesm That's fantastic. Keep at it!
Broke 90 today and had to come back and pay homage! Thanks Rick!
Great advice and break down man!
Luv me some 101 teaching.
My golf game: this week at Yoche Dehe GC. 94.
Last week at Turkey Creek GC. 86.
Difference between the two is the "hero" shots.
Brilliant man!
One of your best videos mate, great compilation of tips. Love your work.
Being confident helps tremendously!!! Guessing myself got me +7 4 holes in... Went +4 the next 14 after I stopped second guessing myself. Could have broke 80 if I did!!!
This is why you have one of the most popular golf channels on RUclips. Great advice and the teaching us with actual swings.
I love the one take Rick. Teaching, showing practice, perform, all-in-one.
Congrats on the 86! Well played.
Trees are my cryptonite. I can’t help but try to take them on. I hate driving it 280 but right behind a tree & having to lay up sideways lol
Love this. Has helped me think about my game. Hope you and family are well and safe.
I’m going golfing today, this is a big promise
good luck
Good luck!
Good luck!
me too
Let us know
Best instructional golf videos around. Thanks Rick!
Rick - you'll break 90 I promise
Me - oh yeah? Let me introduce you to my swing! 😂
😂
This seems like one of the most straightforward yet useful golf videos I've seen, loads of good info
Last year I finally broke 100 (I was a casual for years and I’m finally taking golf really serious) and within a month of practice I almost broke 90. This year I am confident and I will break that 90. Wish me luck!
Took me 2 years to break 90. Congrats!
GOOD LUCK
Your videos are the best. Clear and not over complicated. Currently trying to break 120 so we will see how these tips go on Wednesday. Going for the hero shot is going to be hard to stop myself doing.
My major problem is putting just being able to judge speed needed and trajectory and you put it very simple and easy to understand for me. I can’t wait to use your tips on the course
I need to work on my lag putt.. especially when the hole is downhill.. blowing it past 10 feet is a round killer
Rick, best video in a bit. Really helpful advise. Shots to practice off the course and strategy to use on it. Strong work!
More of this please!!
Rick: Hits a 90 foot bump and run, leaves it 8 feet below the hole, says "that's your worst outcome" Me: "Hold my beer"
I've been known to chunk an 8 iron right off the green a time or two.😉
🤣
Ahahahahaha the best part, is how relatable this all is. It’s really nice to hear other people with a similar golf skill level to me. My best game has been a 90😂
Funny!
Hahaha. Legend
I have played my 7th round now, and hit 86 last week. Super happy. I’m just enjoying it and loving being out with mates
HUGE lesson here I always forget when I'm in trouble - "skip to heroics, don't make it worse". That will be my singular focus next few rounds. Thank, Rick.
Absolute legend of RUclips golf tips. Thank you Rick.
I just had the back nine of my life this sunday! (Been golfing for a bit over a year) I got a 42 on the back and finished with a 94 after a typical 52 front. First time breaking 100 as well! Now on to breaking 90!
Amazing job. Well done!
Awesome video ! I just started playing again about four months ago after not swinging a club for 12 years, I just shot a 88 last week thanks to videos like this ! It can be done with patience and a game plan you stick with
Teach us your ways Master Rick! 🔥
I have a Bronty Chipper iron in my bag for the last 20yrs and what a club for bump and runs from just off the green on a flat surface
Such good advice. Particularly the bump and run, I never do this and I can really see how it will reduce the chances of shanking it around the green. Your videos are brilliant Rick 💪🏼
Excellent video Rick! Well put together. Thanks!
Great tips! Watching Rick and PRACTISING I've gone from 14.8 to 12.9 this summer. Cheers! ❤
These few simple pointers worked for me. Thanks Rick!
For me, a pitching wedge is perfect for the bump and runs. Such a helpful tip!
Thats what I use when im within 5 yards of the green, unless im on fairway/fringe and need it to run out a lot then i use a 7 or 8
I'm going to work really hard to get there and I know I will. Thanks for all of the tips. Your channel is awesome.
Bump & Run is probably the most important shot for a weekend golfer to learn. I play with my friends and I see them pulling out the sand or pitching wedge just off the green and I try to explain why this is a better option. Most get it but some don't and then send their ball 40 yards over the green.
You mean the boomp and run?
Ive been really implementing my bump and run this year and its helped me a ton...ive chipped one in for birdie a few weeks ago but have been consistently putting myself in range for a nice one putt par/bogie
Rick I played a round yesterday and thought about everything you said and I shot a personal best of 92 these tips do work!!
Rick: Don’t hit the hero shot
Me: groans and removes cape and mask as my standard golf uniform
Great tips! Rick always explains everything very well, so everyone understands it.
You are so refreshing! Simple advice that everyone can understand and apply right away, no matter of skill level! Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!
I feel he could make a short of this and end it with saying "just play nine holes"
😅
That'll be the 10th for me 😂
Rick, Thank you so much for the bump and run "Bonus" tip!!!! It was invaluable to me and paid instant dividends the next day when I played my round after watching this!!!! My chipping has been horrible till yesterday! That tip easily saved me 8-10 strokes and the best part was I shot 86! Thanks again and keep the excellent content coming!
You’re a gifted teacher, Rick. Thanks for the video.
Great words to play on. I may have to borrow these words of wisdom…
it's crazy how i always forget that chipping back into the fairway is an option.
When your stroke count hits 89, walk off the course.
But if I've paid for 9-holes, I'm not walking off after 7!
Best tip ever😂
"so which 9, front or back?"
@@coffeeandtrance if you are hitting 90 by hole 10 I think you'd need a new sport 🤣
I once lost 8 balls in 4 holes. Walked off after Hole 5. Knew I wasn’t breaking 90
Started playing 4 months ago and currently working towards breaking 100 so I hope this will help
Rick Shiels is the golf RUclipsr we all need but don't deserve.
Rick: "you will 100% break 90"
Let me introduce you to my drive that goes 100 yards straight and 80 yards right
Aim way left.
Also stop playing long tees that's what whites are for
That's an out to in club path coming across the ball, you've put spin on the ball which is why it swings midflight
Then don’t hit driver
If you hit your driver 100 yards there’s honestly no hope for you bro😂
What Camera and Mic do you Use?
Absolutely! Good tips sir. I read a book one time very similar to your tips, "How to play Bogey Golf", and it was essentially the same philosophy. Kind of like, just lower your expectations, shoot more conservative, and relax for a better outcome.
Thanks for your video!
The head game about not trying the "Hero" shot is the most important, and hardest part of the game for a lot of us.
This guy makes so much sense...love your videos
Good advice Rick. I’ve been breaking 90 every round since I’ve been watching your videos. I’ve lowered my handicap considerably. I’ve been taking lessons as well. I’m at a 13 handicap.
I have been reading some of the comments on here. All Gold and so many funny ones. Golfers have a great sense of humour.
Rick: here's some tips
Comments section: lol I'm very bad at golf
Every. Single. Video.
Bunch of comedy geniuses in here.
Rick, Thanks for your tips. I have found them very helpful.
I need the "how to break 140" video
You have legitimately made a huge difference in my game, that and loads of rounds. Your tips have helped me shave at least ten shots
Not the position that putt ended up in 😂 solid editing
I think the putt was so long that by the time Rick got there the sun had moved causing the shadow of the flag to be longer 🤓🤣
Thank you! The bunker tip helped me a lot!
Must have three putted at the end as that first putt didn’t end up where you knocked it in from 😂
Yes it was short of the flag shadow by 3feet. And then suddenly on the shadow.
Well spotted sir.
Aha class Dave good spot
Lol I didn't notice that, good eyes
Glad someone else noticed that. There was no way he left himself a 4 footer there
what a fantastic lesson Rick I have watched it twice and taken it all onboard . Thanks again.
Just from reading the title....c'mon Rick don't get my hopes up like this!
Check out our break 90 videos we posted last week. Relatable golf
