To be fair, Mike Malaska has used throwing a ball to try and train students to hit with shaft lean. Using the body to drive the swing is also a lot like Malaska and (believe it or not) is reminiscent of Paul Wilson, although he emphasizes the hips rather than rib cage. This is not to diminish at all what Danny is doing in this video; really helpful and, to top it all off, free.

This is by far the best explanation of three easy steps for ball striking. Especially the focal point on the downswing. I was always looking at the ball or slightly in front of it. You are 100% correct with the bad intentions this does. I appreciate you explaining how to correct this bad habit! Thank you sir🙌🏽

  • @jamiesloan7259
    @jamiesloan7259 8 месяцев назад +37

Yes! Hit the ball FORWARD. Most golfers definitely imagine the wrong intention. They’re either trying to hit DOWN AT the ball, which makes you too steep, and often over-the-top. Or…. They’re trying to hit the ball UP, which makes you bottom out behind the ball, making you hit it fat, or catching it on the upswing, and skulling it. No matter what club you have in your hands, set up to the ball and imagine that you’re trying to drive it low, and forward towards the target. The loft on the club will provide the up, even though you’re trying to drive it low. Also, with all your intent focused on hitting it FORWARD, you’ll naturally end up with your weight on your left side, and you’ll feel like you’re putting “pressure” into the back of the ball. This creates a very compressed, and powerful strike, and gets you through the ball, with a nice follow through. I’m telling you people, trying to hit the ball FORWARD will change your game forever. Great video, as always, Danny!

"imagine that you’re trying to drive it low": This is super interesting to me, now that you say it. I seem to get so much loft (irritatingly so) when I'm trying to punch out from trees, as if trying to hit a low shot actually makes the ball go higher. I will experiment with this idea. Thank you!

This makes sense for a short iron where its lined up in the middle of your stance, but what about a long iron where the ball is a bit further up? Your sternum would naturally be a bit behind the ball.

Left the driving range today frustrated as I kept thinning and chunking all my iron shots.
Came home and found this video. Immediately started practicing the drills. Went into the backyard expecting to thin the ball but instead it flew over the fence and went at least 100 yards down the alley.

High handicap golfer (hcp 45) here. Watched this video during breakfest today. Tee time for 9 holes was 11:50 am. Though I give it a try at the range and what should I say: it worked perfectly! Without effort my irons went as far as always but with less effort. If I added the down throw motion you describe distance increased but consistency decreased as well. So have to work on that! But amazing lesson. Thank you Danny for sharing this. Extremly helpful. On the course I had my second best round ever using the effort less swing. What an easter present. Great content 🎉

Your last piece of advice is so interesting Danny. Yesterday I kept telling myself to turn towards the target and it helped a lot. I find that I naturally turn toward the target with a 9 iron chip shot from about 10 to 30 yards, but like you say, I tend to focus more on the ball than the target as the clubs and distance start getting longer, which significantly hampers my “swing.” Such great advice, as always!

Danny again another fantastic video. I have known for some time that my problem was focusing on hitting the "BALL" and this was ruining my game. I could not get this out of my head. Some swings I would even stop as soon as I hit the ball. Just last week I figured out a way to work past this by making about 100 full swings with no ball and then working the ball back in slowly. So I am goingnto use this method to keep working on my "target".

Thanks Danny, the forward momentum of the body - focusing on directing the ball forward towards target as opposed to trying so hard to strike the ball that's in front of you. This concept really helped me start getting the weight forward with continued rotation through the swing, with the right forward-shaffling. So much that it dramatically changed my results. I recommend any newer golfers struggling with ball striking to really focus on this aspect.

The step two instruction to “move the rib cage around and back, and then to unwind it” really resonated with me for some reason. I was told to “turn my shoulders” by my instructor for years back in the mis 2000’s but my turn was ultimately often fake. After being out of the game for past six years, I’m getting my lag back, my clubhead and ball speed is coming back up to pre-70 yr old levels (according to my SkyTrak) and my strike, shot shape, and distance bounced back almost instantly. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your content. Really happy with these results. Cheers…

Another great video. I struggled mentally for years on shaft lean because of bad advice. Your instruction is simple and understandable without getting into technicalities like lag, tempo, weight transfer, hand grip tension etc. Just smooth and effortless. Like butter 🙂Thanks Danny

Thank you for this video! Irons have been my worst part since focusing on keeping my driver in bounds. I tend to have a mental roadblock, because I feel like if I contact the ground, I'm going to just dig my club in and chunk the hell out of it. So lots of times, I top and flub then badly. Definitely going to work on these. Especially number 3 because I feel like having my focus elsewhere will help my issues for sure

    Danny
Just finished your simple golf drills and I feel like I learning something new each time.
I decided to swing easier to gain control and focus on flow of contact from beginning to end. I also found myself stiff on the first 3 holes and as I continued I loosened up. My rib cage was moving or my upper body was moving better and I was able to make better consistent contact to the way your drill showed. I am a senior so my flexibility appears as the game progresses. :)
    thank you Danny

@@DanielMaude I just washed to update since you replied. Was finally able to get out to the range and practice… MAN after about 10 swings I hit one dead straight and caught the feel, I was consistently hitting the ball 65 - 70yards farther (275-285 yards) when I miss hit rarely am I slicing I will typically send it left. Even when I do slice instead of a 50+ yard slice it’s maybe 10-15 yards. Keep doing what you’re doing, I’ve started to enjoy the game again!
