It's funny because Rick literally beat Grant Horvat in a 18 hole match on camera not long ago.. And any one of these 20 handicap clowns talking shit wouldn't be able to shoot within 30 strokes of Grant in a match 😂
Rick humbly admits he's only about a Scratch to 2 handicap.
There would be a sizeable amount of club golfers who could quite comfortably tuck him away, and he'd admit that himself because he understands golf.
It's the same with all these guys, they're decent club golfers, but there's guys up and down the land who are incredibly good and who are +4, +5 etc
They're in a different class to RUclips golfers because they're not about making videos, they're about being the best they can be.

Best 2 tips for any golfer who struggles to break 85. Add one to the par of every hole to make the course a par 89/90, ignore everything else and make that your scorecard from now on. And secondly club up one on every approach to the green, you’ll hit 25% more greens
Great tip. It is ALWAYS better to hit a smooth shot with a longer club than try to kill a shorter one.
@@leonardhandzlik6008 And playing par 4's like they are par 5's (or 3's like short 4's, or 5's like par 6's), thus taking pressure off those tee and approach shots, and putting emphasis on a basic, bread-and-butter short game, is a great approach.
I really appreciate how Rick went through each tip, beginning with the tee box and all the way through the green. It’s such a great way to keep the viewer attention and at the same time go through the various ways the game of golf can test your patience in a seemingly natural way.
Best tips I have 1. don’t do a full swing on your drive, slow and straightish is better than long and occasionally straight 2. Spend more time practicing your short game more than anything else. You will hit wedge and putter more than driver 3. Play against your own score and keep good notes on what needs work 4. Show up early, sink a few practice puts and hit a few wedges before playing 5. Find an approach club and distance that you are confident with and include that in your strategy for the hole 6. Ignore every “this swing tip” video on RUclips - they create more problems than they solve 7. Don’t play with rule nazi’s ;-)

About bunkers: I'd love to see a video about how to get out of the "public course" bunker. Those that have the sand as solid as cement
You lay down and hit it like a cue ball in billiards.
Chip it as you would off dirt
I have definitely played some municipal/public courses with little to no sand in the "bunkers". If it's really just hard-packed dirt and the lip/bank isn't super high, a firm smack with the putter can roll the ball up and out and onto the green. Or take something like PW or SW and go for a little flicky chip shot, looking to strike the ball first and not sand... but that one is a bit risky because if you catch it thin you can easily skull it right over the green. The explosion shot typically taught for bunkers really does NOT work unless you actually have enough sand in the bunkers for the club to go underneath the ball.
Public courses would have to be an entire new video. Like hitting off dirt, greens like gravel, and fairways that are dry clay and making a divot is a trip to the ER with a broken wrist. 🤣

It is funny, but I have always loved bunker shots and sometimes even aiming for them to stop the ball. I think it is because I always was worried about "ruining" the grass, but you cannot ruin sand, so I swing with much more confidence.
For the tees, i use my pinky to get a consistent height. Works great
In USA it would be nice if courses actually raked their bunkers especially when they charge $75+ for a round.
Majority of the courses I play here on the west coast are raked. Not all, but majority. Only downside is that unless you’re first off the tee, I deal with other golfers who are sometimes too lazy to rake after themselves. Probably the same people who don’t fix their ball marks on the greens… 🤷🏻♂️
If at all possible when in a bunker I use a 60 wedge and chip on to the green, I just find it more reliable than the typical bunker shot 👍.
Driver slicing and short chips are the bane of my game!
7:35 you can probably search up a video where Gary Player advocates this method. Pick the club that will roll out to the hole if you just carry it onto the green.
Tommy Armour taught that, too. So did Harvey Penick. They only thing to remember is that irons are stronger now than in those days, so that old 40 degree 7 iron is more like an 8 or even a 9 now. Practice with 3-4 clubs, and figure out which ones roll out how.

If you can putt it, putt it. Yea, play with people fatting or skulling chips across the green all the time. Just putt it. This saves a lot of strokes for us high hcpers who rarely hit GIRs.
I know its not correct bunker shots... but ive finally got my head around em. I use similar stroke to a bump and run... its 10 out of 10 at the mo. (Might not work on a high edge, but works a treat on lower lips)
There are very wide soled wedges out there designed for just this purpose. Use a basic chip swing and they'll generally skim along the sand, (unless it's very fluffy or very packed), and pop the shot up high enough to carry over a moderate lip and onto the green to roll out.
More tips on reading greens would be awesome
I find that the follow through on the bunker shots is very important.
Another tip for playing greenfield bunkers is to make sure you have a solid base/ stance so as not to move/ sway while swinging the club
Idk about "thinking positively". I would say "steel your thoughts".
If you fear something it WILL be in your mind. Something that resides in your mind isn't so easily ignored.
This will affect your swing mechanics. Most golfers know, if you hyper-focus on the water you will either go in the water or go as far away from it as humanly possible (bail out).
Instead hyper-focus on a specific spot you want the ball to land and nothing but that spot. Don't even acknowledge the hazards.
This is how you swing confidently.. because you are not succumbing to fear. This is why the pros maintain their composure. Emotional turmoil is a game killer. Even being too excited will get you in trouble.
If you lack the skills to hit that spot, keep practicing. It will come with focused, purposeful, and knowledgeable practice.
Tubes will be happy about the pink castle tees 😂

The most important thing high handicappers can do to improve outside of working on swing mechanics, is to really really practice course management. If there’s a hole that you have a common miss with your driver, find a club you hit more reliably that won’t reach that trouble and play that. Keeping the ball in play will save you so many strokes even if it doesn’t look pretty. Plan for your misses. Try to miss on a side that gives you room for error. This ends up leading to more confidence going forward as well.
This video isn't just for new or high handicap folks. I know mid and even some low handicap people that forget these "basics"
For the last tip: instead of the logo, use the arrow or straight line because some brands like Callaway have golf balls where their logo has an arc.

Another important tip: Golf is hard enough, play from the forward tees.
Amen! We all see it, the 4 pack of bros who play the tips and can barely get the ball up to the forward tees. You’re starting the round off on a bad note and you’re pissing off everyone else too.
Put your pride aside and know your strengths- no shame in playing shorter. You build confidence, more consistent play and then you can gradually work your way back. Save your energy and time - golf is hard enough. 🍻

I would say first tip is use the clubs that are most suited for game and ability. Even if that means you should not be hitting blades.

From watching your video's I have copied the way you putt & the last 2 rounds I have played my putting has improve so much. Gone from 3 putting to 2 or 1 depending on distance away

Notes: Secure the home advantage in the first tournaments and rounds in which you want to impress someone and play on a course you know well. Avoid anything that increases your blood pressure. Like conversations about your boss, your last wife, the discussion of what you did well or wrong on the last hole. Don't count towards your current total points during the round (see Kenny Rogers, The Gambler). Forget the lost hole from 3 minutes ago. The next one could easily be a birdie. Ignore the judgmental looks from your teammates when you hit a shot - you're all alone, making your swing or putt. And play golf for fun and not for your reputation, money or anything like that. Don't rely on gadgets like golf watches, golf apps, range finders. As a beginner, they only distract you in stressful situations. You can use them in training.

Im new to golf and i just cant beat 113, which does include out of bound balls, drops and obvs shots, i just want to get better
Simple shots. Ignore the driver for now, and find the longest club you can hit safely into the fairway most of the time, and rarely far off line. Drive with that, even if it's a 7 iron! Then, on your next shot, (on a par 4), don't worry about getting on the green. Just get up close to it. Then, on your next shot, focus on pitching or chipping on, preferably within 30 feet. Then get that 30 footer within about 3 feet, and sink the 2nd putt.
This leaves you practicing 5 things to start with. They are as follows, in priority sequence.
One, short putts. Get consistent at sinking your less than 3 footers, and get to the point where you can sink your 4 to 7 footers about half the time.
Two, long putts. Work on your 20-30-40 foot putts. Get more consistent at getting them to within 3 feet of the flag. That makes 2 putts much more routine, since you now sink almost all those 3 foot and less putts.
Three, work on your basic just-off-the-green chip and your basic 20-30 yards off the edge of the green pitch. Get to the point where you can put them on the green in good range. You want those chips inside 10 feet, or better yet inside 5. That gives you a chance at some 1 putts every now and again. Get the pitches into your 30 foot circle, or better yet inside 20. That makes for lower pressure 2 putts.
Four, get steady with your mid-short irons. 7-8-9. Feel as if you get fairly consistent contact most of the time, and learn roughly how far they go. Use them most of the time to get closer to the green-but not necessarily on-with your 2nd or 3rd shot on par 4's and 5's. (You'll sometimes need long irons or hybrids for some of these shots on longer holes, but if you can learn to hit a good 7 or 8 iron, that makes learning to hit a 4 or 5 hybrid, or even a fairway wood, easier). Learn to position these 2nd or 3rd shots to avoid bunkers and give you simple approach shots, hopefully through the opening to the green rather than over the bunkers. The best way to do this is to aim that 2nd or 3rd shot to give yourself lots of room to miss and still stay out of trouble. That takes the pressure off that 20-30 yards from the edge of the green pitch. (And if you have a 40-50 yards off the edge shot sometimes, use 1 or 2 more clubs and use the same swing. It'll work well enough for now.) Or if you are close enough to aim at a green with a 9 iron or a wedge, learn to aim into the middle of the widest area of the green INSIDE THE HAZARD RING. By that I mean inside the bunkers and mounds and swales and such that ring most greens. Being on the fringe, or even in level rough close to the green, isn't nearly so difficult as being in a bunker, or on an awkward slope. If you miss the green, but you are not far off the edge, inside that ring of hazards, you can more easily play your basic chip shot and give yourself an easy 2 putt or maybe a 1 putt.
And remember. If you are new to the game, and struggling for consistency to just break 110, you probably can't aim at greens that are an 8 iron or longer away without high risk of putting your shot into that ring of dangerous hazards, and costing yourself an extra stroke - or two - or three! It's not worth the risk. You are 2 shots from the green if you have a 6 or 7 iron or hybrid distance to cover. Use a 9 iron or a wedge to aim your shot to a safe place outside the hazard ring, preferably lined up with the opening through the ring. From there you can play a basic or somewhat longer pitch shot to the green, and give yourself a good chance to get down from there in 2 putts.
Finally, five, find that driver for yourself. It may be a wood, or a hybrid, or even a longer iron. Back in the 90's, I saw a video from a Georgia pro who said that if you can hit the ball 150 yards and keep it in play, there is not a hole in golf where you cannot be on the green and putting for your par, provided you play from the correct tees, and work on your short game. So put that middle length club shot 130-180 yards out there in the fairway where you have a much easier 2nd shot. Then eat up another similar distance to get close to the green on a par 4, (most par 4's on the correct tees for beginners should be under 350 yards!) to give you an easy short game approach. Then use your short game to set up an easy approach putt, then sink an easy 2nd putt for your bogey. Repeat. Go home with a score of 90! (Well, once you get the hang of it, anyway.😁)
Just remember throughout to keep it as simple and as easy as you can. If the shot looks hard, pick a different shot. Once you get better and more consistent, you'll be able to start tackling some of those more challenging shots. But for now, stick by 2 simple principles taught by Tommy Armour long ago.
1. Always look to play the shot you have the best chance of playing well.
2. Play the shot which makes the next shot easy!
Beginners note not all tips will work for all people. Try these things, but if they don't work for you, find something else that does. Don't stick with things that may not work for you just because someone tells you about them.
For me, the ball above feet does not fly out left, it goes right instead. Mostly because the short swing plane doesn't allow my swing to get all the way through. I've learnt that through trial and error, and now I play that shot with a very open stance, that allows me to get the club back and hit the shot square.
Experiment to see what works for you.
The ABSOLUTE BEST tip I’ve found in my life is the Arnold Palmer swing tip. Point your left shoulder at the ball on your backswing. All the other swing mechanics follow naturally. Not to take away from Rick, but Saguto golf has a great video on this. All these other tips should be built upon the base of a good swing.
On driver too?
First, nobody good has their shoulders tilted towards the ball. It might be fine as a feel for golfers too flat but that is not what actually happens in a good swing.
Second, I can show you hundreds of hacks that have shoulders tilted to ball in backswing and I can assure you nothing ‘natural’ is to follow.
@@ryze9153 he may not be PGA himself, but he is passing knowledge from someone who is considered to be one of the GOATs. I applied this tip to my swing and it has made an enormous difference. I went from inconsistent 240-250 drives with lots of hooks and slices to reaching out to the 300 range, much more consistently straight. The other factor in that growth was intensive core training.
@@aluminumfalcon552 and that's totally fine to pass down knowledge. But he is not PGA certified as an actual teacher. I would not go to him for swing help. But if its tips from Hogan or somethin, go for it.
@@Not.Satoshi none of that matters to me, I applied it to my swing and got fantastic results. Nearly every time I go to the range now I get compliments from the older golfers.
I see all kinds of hacks doing weird things with their arms, but anyone with a good swing has a backswing similar to Arnie, forget what he does on his follow through, that part of the swing after contact doesn’t matter.

Yeah, you can. With a lot of people, the hybrid runs too far unless you're chipping right across a big green, but it's definitely an option. Like old school coaches like Tommy Armour and Harvey Penick used to say, whatever club gets the ball to hop up in the air over the rough, onto the green, and running like a putt the rest of the way. Could be anything from a hybrid to a wedge, depending on the variables involved.
#4 as a beginner; If a tree is blocking your shot, aim for the tree, as a beginner you will for certain miss what you’re aiming for!
Doesn't matter what I use... I always hit with the "toe"....and I slice extremely left or right.... I still fudgin play though....

I always tell my new golfing buddies to not replicate what they see the pros do.
For instance, being 10 yards off the green, don’t just grab your 60° and try to flop it next to the pin because as a new golfer that’s not going to be very pretty. Grab your 8 iron and bump and run it close.

Yeah. Classic advice. Another way to put it is "don't follow a bad shot with another bad shot". In other words, pick a simple, easy shot you know you can play well that gets you back in play, and preferably sets up another straightforward shot for your next one.

Rick I'm one of the best juniors in the world and with your chipping tip I disagree because it depends on the player if they chip or putt from the fringe, if you are going over a shoulder I agree it would be easier to putt but if its a bit uphill you should chip as you could pitch it a lot closer to the pin and get quite aggressive, other than that I agree with everything

It's quite rare to see even tour pros chipping from the fringe...very situational. This vid is aimed at someone who is new and/or doesn't have a lot of time to put into refining personal skills. For that player, putting from the fringe is almost always the right call.

@@user-zu2eh4rc4g The 100 and up shooters aren't worried about control of tight lies close to the green. They don't even know what a tight lie is. This stuff is all ham'n'eggs advice for ham'n'eggs golfers. This tip is for helping someone to get on the green and down in two more putts for a bogey or a double bogey instead of skulling it across the moss on the way to a Snowman! But I agree your suggestion can work in some situations for someone with the skill and need to take an aggressive line.
