    One of the students at my flight school many years ago performed a simulated engine failure towards a field from a cruise altitude of 5000 AGL. He never cleared the engine during the emergency descent, and when he applied power to go around once he had the field made, the engine coughed and quit for real. He did not secure the engine, and when he touched down, it roared back to life at full throttle and popped back into the air. Still in the mindset of "land", he shoved the nose down, hitting the ground nosewheel first so hard that it bent the engine mount of the 152 upwards. The plane bounced back into the air again, he finally decided it wanted to fly, so he climbed out and flew it back home.
    I saw the airplane they next day, it had hay embedded in the horizontal control surfaces.
    Clear you engine on simulated engine outs!

      What do you mean secure the engine?

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff 4 месяца назад

      @@br4nd0nh347 Close the throttle, mixture idle/cutoff, shut off magnetos, shut off fuel. Basically make it so the engine won't run anymore, and fuel won't leak out if you crash and rupture a fuel line.

    8 for 8! If I had one dollar for every time the engine "failed" while flying with my old CFI, I'd own my own fleet by now LOL. A lot of good points mentioned in this video, especially the "how do I not make my emergency someone else's emergency". Great video as always!

    One thing you should have mentioned is that if you are landing on a beach, it's best to land on the wet sand if possible instead of the dry beach.

    I just did two simulated Forced Landing WithOut Power (FLWOP) during my solo practice lesson last Saturday. This is something you need to demonstrate to the examiner on your PPL flight test in New Zealand (and judging by some comments, you don’t need to in other countries?). As part of this, we are taught to do an “engine warm” every 1000’, to check that the engine will recover. Great lesson, thanks Jason!

    8 of 8 done. The ABCs are a great reminder. But the way I see it if you already have a best airspeed set and you already located a place to land then everything should be just fine as long as you fly the plane, fly the plane, fly the plane. File the checklist and repeated as many times as possible before making the decision to land.

    Landing on the beach vs. in the adjacent surf--I think many pilots are thinking "save the plane" by attempting to land on the beach, but they run the risk of making it someone else's emergency as you said. Many people have said, "once you have an emergency and have to land off-airport, don't worry about saving the plane; the insurance company owns it now."

    I own a Piper Arrow II and a student in it. The glide ratio is 8:1. As soon as you go to idle in the simulated engine failure and get to best glide speed, the plane will start dropping. Absolutely agree that you should practice all the way to an actual landing. When you do that, it helps you judge what the plane will do n a real emergency and if your best place to land is achievable
