21 for 21, thank you Jason. I really liked your perspective on choosing the alternate near the mid-point of a flight. Learning a lot of good ADM here on your channel.
21 for 21. I did my ground school w/ MZeroA, and I remember well the term "get there-itis", and that just about all GA flights are optional. I leave in the SF Bay Area where we have a lot of GA airports, so I always have several as points I fly over or near along the way to my destination.
21 for 21. Absolutely love the entire series and the team’s dedication. My favorite was day 13 on slow flight and how you had the great idea of demonstrating slow flight with no hands!
21 for 21. I select 2 alternates on every XC flight, one at the mid-point like you recommend and one closer to my destination if the field is less than my personal min (crosswinds, ceilings, vis,...)
Great point! I was always told throughout my training to select an alternate near the destination. This makes a lot more sense, from now own I will plane a mid-point alternate as well.
This is such a great topic! Had my destination airport in UT end up being closed one time - no NOTAM at all… we announced on CTAF and there was a ground response that the airport was closed. Thankfully, we had plenty of fuel and clear weather to make it to an alternate….
21 for 21 great recommendation. Funny how in IFR training you learn the basics of picking an alternate when necessary when in reality the picked alternate is to fill out paperwork. Just as in VFR knowing where to land at all times for an emergency this is a great rule for IFR and should become more of the required training. Nice Job!
Thanks Jason. Good food for thought on long cross county planning. I haven't thought of that before having the alternate being well in advance of your destination.
At the age of 72 I am past the point in my life where obtaining a PPL is pretty well behind me. But I still get a lot of mileage out of these videos by applying the knowledge to my sessions in MS Flight Sim. I know it isn't quite the same without the feel of gravity and momentum on your body and the aircraft, but it is still great hand eye co-ordination exercise. Any exercise that helps focus all your senses like flying does just has to be good for you. Besides...in Flight Sim it can always be the perfect day, perfect conditions and perfectly fun in your favorite aircraft. I love the Savage Cub for just fun flying and touch and goes, and the Grumman Goose for exploring the virtual world created by the FS team..as real as it gets. Keep up the great videos guys and gals!
21 of 21! A good topic that is not taken serious enough. An alternate can save your life and make your life easier for a just in case. I plan 2 alts when able.
Yup I'm learning! You made a couple of very good points, and yes I will make sure to challenge myself next time I go up to look at alternates a little better. Thanks Jason! Keep up the good work!!!
Thanks for the different thought. I’ve always thought about the alternate only for those “uh oh” moments mid-trip but far enough away from the flight path in the event of inclement weather.
21 for 21! Funny: I did my first solo a few days ago. Typical few laps around the pattern with CFI then a few laps solo. When we got back to the hangar for my CFI to get out I said "I'm going to run in to use the restroom real quick, I probably should have before we flew, but didn't really need to." My CFI chuckled and said "You know, you're my first student to ever do that and I'm glad you're thinking ahead and realized it so that it wouldn't be anything that might cause any added stress on your first solo. Most of my students would have just been to exited to solo and probably wouldn't take a pit stop." It wasn't due to nerves, I just had too much water to drink while driving to my lesson. Plus he got to go inside and warm up for a minute (it was -8 Celsius outside while he stood watching me solo). Win-win for both of us and my solo went great.
Hey Jason just checking in on the rewatch on this one you assigned on night 31. Thank you for this. Only 9.7 into my private but i will go beyond and pick alternates at 3rds or quarters along route when able. We are much furster west than you and i plan on doing some moutain flying especially up to yellowstone one day. Thank you
21/21. Very good advice, Jason. While IFR alternates have specific requirements, VFR alternates do not, but your recommendations are excellent. I remember on one of my flights from southeast Kansas to AirVenture, I had to stop at an alternate airport short of KOSH due to weather. That airport, like you suggested, was just slightly off my flight path. I stayed overnight and made it to Oshkosh the next day. Thank heavens for alternates!
21 for 21.😊 Great reminder regarding alternate airports along our flying routes. I learned early on during 150+ NM cross country flights that coffee while en route wasn't always a good idea. 😉 Thank you, Jason! ❤
21 of 21. Great video Jason, definitely a great way to think about alternates that should be discussed more. I always liked being super prepared on my cross countries, I had the information my alternates listed in my flight log, frequencies, pattern altitude, etc. just to be as prepared as possible. Thanks for another great video!
21 for 21 - I was taught to have alternate near your departure airport, one en-route as you describe and another closer to your destination but far enough away that the weather may be different. Can't have enough alternates.
21 for 21. I always put my alternate smack dead in the middle or somewhat in the middle like video mentions. I mean sure, if my alternate is next to my destination that's fine, but if I need to divert due to wx, chances are my alternate airport at that point won't do me any good.
21 for 21. Great material and information. Thank you for the reminder about alternatives. For me, I'm 6'4' and I need to stretch my legs once in a while so alternates are always a good thing.
21 for 21! Good information on alternates, hand up that I was unaware of the requirement to have knowledge of alternates when flying VFR NOT in the vicinity of the airport. Your reasoning for choosing your alternate along your route makes sense, I plan to use your idea.
21 for 12 - For longer trips I would have multiple alternates along the route of flight and for IFR a major airport with low minimums somewhere near the destination as an alternate (even if not the official filed alternate).
I always commit to a class C as an alternate and make certain or adjust my routing to make sure that makes sense. Class C has services including fuel, rental cars and hotels nearby if necessary and almost certainly a mechanic available if needed. A Class C usually has multiple runways and approaches. Some Class D may offer the same. I’d never even consider an alternate at an untowered field.
While I at some point in the past I would agree with you, the time I actually had to go missed in IFR the only airport within 15 miles of mile that was a great option was a pilot controlled (untowered field) with an rnav approach but the ceilings were at 1000 instead of at minimums at this towered airport I was flying into. If you have the mindset of I will never use an uncontrolled field as an alternate you very well could be cutting your options in half for going missed or an emergency.
@@coachraythepilot5759 a filed and carefully considered Alternate is for planning and preparation. Once you have passed the alternate and continued on your flight you should consider plans B, C and maybe D which may include untowered fields. You are not required to use your filed alternate and in some cases it may no longer be a good choice. It’s preference in some way but I think class C if available is your best bet. May not always be the case on a missed when you’re low on fuel, etc .
How absolutely prophetic “ never leave a good airport behind you “
The 180 turn that is not impossible
Actually hadn't thought of the Alternate quite that way before. Thank you.
21 for 21 🎉🎉 learning a lot 🙏. Thank you Jason!
21 for 21, thank you Jason. I really liked your perspective on choosing the alternate near the mid-point of a flight. Learning a lot of good ADM here on your channel.
21 for 21! Absolutely agree, don’t leave a good airport behind you.
21 for 21 and enjoying every one them!! I have a small bladder and always need to know where all those alternates are.
21 for 21. Never leave a good runway behind. Love this.
21 for 21. I did my ground school w/ MZeroA, and I remember well the term "get there-itis", and that just about all GA flights are optional. I leave in the SF Bay Area where we have a lot of GA airports, so I always have several as points I fly over or near along the way to my destination.
21 for 21. A great mantra to add to my tool bag. “Never leave a good airport behind you”!!
21 for 21 Almost there!!! Great teaching on Alternate Airports, thank you Jason, for all of your hard work!!! And for bringing us your Best Practices
21 for 21. Absolutely love the entire series and the team’s dedication. My favorite was day 13 on slow flight and how you had the great idea of demonstrating slow flight with no hands!
21 for 21!
Great Teaching!!
Sooooo Valuable!!!
Excellent Lesson Sir!
ET
21 for 21! Learning something every video Jason! Thank you!
21 for 21, I am learning so much with all these. Thanks Jason
21 of 21 - Was always told to select a series of alternate along the planned route
21/21. The mid point alternate is a great flight plan staple.
21 for 21! Very true. Definitely will incorporate alternates into my VFR XC’s as well. Not just IFR 👍🏼
21 for 21!! Great reality check! Thanks Jason.
Love it
Another great refresher and your always positive nonjudgmental attitude is why it’s easy to subscribe.
This is such a great topic! Had my destination airport in UT end up being closed one time - no NOTAM at all… we announced on CTAF and there was a ground response that the airport was closed. Thankfully, we had plenty of fuel and clear weather to make it to an alternate….
Right on! Loved the 40% to 60% of the XC, definitely going to use it. Thank you Jason
21 for 21 great recommendation. Funny how in IFR training you learn the basics of picking an alternate when necessary when in reality the picked alternate is to fill out paperwork. Yup I'm learning! You made a couple of very good points, and yes I will make sure to challenge myself next time I go up to look at alternates a little better. Thanks Jason! Keep up the good work!!!
21/21 great topic, I learned to always keep alternates in the back of my mind and during planning to look for them on my route
Great perspective/method. Really liked this one. 21 for 21
Thanks for the different thought. I’ve always thought about the alternate only for those “uh oh” moments mid-trip but far enough away from the flight path in the event of inclement weather.
21 for 21. Excellent lesson…always need to be familiar with other vfr uncontrolled strips in our place
21/21. And got my first solo in this morning!
21 for 21! Excellent video! Never thought of alternate airports that way! Totally makes sense.
21 for 21, always good refreshment and knowledge in your videos!
21 for 21!

21 for 21 in 202r! Thank you for discussing this very important topic.
21 from 21 👍😇👌OUTSTANDING INFORMATIVE VIDEO 👌😇👍Cheers 🍻🍻
Great message! Learning point taken.
Checking in 21 for 21. Another great informative video Jason
21/21. Loving all the content! Thanks for making such great content for all of us.
Thank you Jason , great video !
21 for 21! Roger That ! Thanks Jason !
21 for 21 - Great stuff MzeroA!
21 for 21 Thank you Jason, Great common-sense information that we always don't follow.

Such good advice! I never plan much longer than 2 hours a leg. If the weather's bad ahead? Land and wait it out. Live to fly another day.
Thanks for the videos.... My Favorite so far!!!!
Always learning new stuff from. Especially that I am still newbie. Passed my checkride last week. 21 of 21 by the way.
21 for 21. Great advice and planning tools
21 (and 20!) Had to play catch up! These two videos are such great real world flying examples!
21/21 Very good ideas for alternate. One more stop makes for a much more comfortable trip for your passengers and makes trip seem shorter.
21 for 21! Thank you Jason.
great thought and simple to do.
21 for 21 here! I’ll remember this advice when I get to that point in my flying.

I missed this video yesterday but I’m caught up again
21 for 21 finally caught up Great stuff as always Jason!
21 for 21.😊 Great reminder regarding alternate airports along our flying routes. I learned early on during 150+ NM cross country flights that coffee while en route wasn't always a good idea. 😉 Thank you, Jason! ❤
21 for 21 caught up. This is such a safe idea. It was not a taught plan 40 years ago during my training.
21 of 21. Great video Jason, definitely a great way to think about alternates that should be discussed more. 21/21 - good advice and reasoning. Absolutely learning things in the series.
21Thank u! Thank u! Thank u! I have learned so much from your sharing of exploration in the air!
21-21! Another great safety reminder.
21 for 21. Almost caught up. Enjoying every video.
21 for 21 !!!🎉 A ☆☆☆☆☆Good Pilot Is Always Learning☆☆☆☆☆
Twenty one for twenty one :) I was always taught to pick multiple alternates along the planned route of flight.
21/21! Good that the alternate is getting a little respect. Can be so helpful yo be ahead of this moment. Gut check moments are important.
21 over 21… thanks for these videos… they are refresher and learning tools…. Much appreciated 👍
21 for 21. Great material and information. Thank you for the reminder about alternatives. For me, I'm 6'4' and I need to stretch my legs once in a while so alternates are always a good thing.
21 for 21. Thanks for the great content!
21 for 21. GREAT STUFF!!!!
21 of 21! Important stuff!!
21 / 21. This is good advice for all categories of pilots.
I am 21 for 21. Thanks for the help on IFR Procedures.
I really appreciate how you are able to explain and make it so easy and realistic. I am learning a lot of good common sense techniques.
LOVING these. Thank you SO much Jason. Making me wish I went with you guys for my online ground school (Still happy with who i did though lol).
21/21. Yes, we're learning everyday. Thanks Jason ! "Bob"
Playing catchup today 21-21.
21 for 21! Good information on alternates, hand up that I was unaware of the requirement to have knowledge of alternates when flying VFR NOT in the vicinity of the airport. Your reasoning for choosing your alternate along your route makes sense, I plan to use your idea.
21/21 Always good advice. I look at the airports along my route so I'm familiar with them in case I need to drop in.
21/21. Just like watching for a field incase of an emergency, I try to be aware of all the appropriate airports along my route
21 for 21 a good pilot is always learning.
21 for 21. Great advice!
Always Good! 21 for 21.!
21 4 21
RWY in sight!
21 for 21. Best one yet!
21 for 21
Good video, thank you Jason
Once again sharing common sense safety decisions. Thanks😊
21 fo r21 thanks Jason great video!
Great aviation tips. Keep them coming. Very helpful and informative. We love them 👍
21 for 12 - For longer trips I would have multiple alternates along the route of flight and for IFR a major airport with low minimums somewhere near the destination as an alternate (even if not the official filed alternate).
If your flying east, it is often better to put your alternate further east of your destination as weather tends to come from the west.
21 for 21 very good topic makes a lot sense
