I personally describe each of the shows like this:
Season 0: Local high schoolers take Tabletop Games way too seriously.
DM: Young kid gets possessed by the soul of his past life, gets wrapped up in schemes of vengance, later becomes a celebrity.
GX: High schooler learns that that depression and war crimes are the real friends we made along the way.
5DS: Biker gang fights the Illuminati and a semi-related Death Cult, also solves wealth inequality.
Zexal: Hyperactive kid teams up with amnesiac alien to stop proxy war between two planets that was a front to obtain the corpse of God.
ArcV: High schooler would rather fight an interdimensional-war and become Satan than go to therapy (he has depression and daddy issues)
VRAINS: A corportation decided to make Skynet out of abused children and teach it card games. This will somehow make them money.

Here's the best way I can describe each Yu-Gi-Oh series in a few words without spoilers
Season 0- Wait, you're telling me this series wasn't about card games?
Duel Monsters- Egyptian magic turned into children's card game
GX- slice of life card game anime turns into *VERY SPOILERY YET DARK THINGS* half way
5Ds- everyone memes on card games on motorcycles, but beyond that its actually an emotionally and politically intelligent series.
ZeXal- loser protag gets involved with an alien's amnesia (it's actually really good, at least starting from the tournament arc)
Arc V- Entertainer protag gets involved with INTERDIMENSIONAL WAR, AND WHATS GOING ON IM SCARED
Vrains- so, we use AI for children's card games now huh?

    • @dnaught535
      @dnaught535 3 месяца назад +22

Zexal could be expanded on with: Loser protag helps with alien amnesia and then prevents ancient rulers from committing genocide

    • @mrone5780
      @mrone5780 3 месяца назад +13

DM - fight of the past. GX - present. 5ds - future. Their movie together called Bonds Beyond Time anyway. Meaning we ended yugi's timeline story. Then we entering Zexal - battle of universe, 5ds - multiverse, Vrains - metaverse.

ArcV was an aniversary show, so part of its plot later on is why you see characters from previous series show up, i cant go into why if you plan on seeing the show
I'll say now though if you do plan on watching it i'd recommend the jp dub because of the tone of the series and voice acting, the dub isnt bad but some vas are way better than others while the jp its stellar across the board

5D - Sick duels on motorcycles with a bit of time paradox stuff
Zexal - Weak start, but gets pretty cool with the later duels
    Arc-V - Marvel Multiverse - Infinity War/Endgame
VRAINS - Hackerman (first MC to get his ace monster banned irl) 😂
Sevens - Haven't watched, but kinda looks like if they took the Duel Links game and made it a series, lol.

"Season Zero" is based off the earlier parts of the manga, pre card game.
The Duel Monsters anime basically summarizes Yugi and Kaiba's second confrontation in one duel and then skips to Duelist Kingdom in the 8th volume of the manga, which is where the series becomes permanently about the card game after two previous duels in 7 volumes. Shadi and Bakura both were introduced before Duelist Kingdoms in storylines that had nothing to do with Duel Monsters (as Yugi only dueled Kaiba twice before this, and that was it), so they had to be reintroduced in Duelist Kingdom.

Not sure someone wrote in the comments
    But for some reason
Yugioh DM reuse Opening 4 for Season 4 and a mini arc before Season 5 (Egypt)
So I think that opening was used for more than a year in the anime runtime.
Same thing with Yugioh GX opening 2 which was used for season 2 (the opening was first used in second half of season 1) and they have it more than a year as well
No point seeing those versions since DM didn’t change anything except the end part which shows the arc they’re in.
And other version of GX opening 2 was lackluster since it was more slideshow and footage from the show

With Arc-V, to truly enjoy the experience it is recommended to watch first GX, 5D and Zexal as it has some context but it is not a must. The characters that you see in Arc-V are from a "parallel dimension" similar to the worlds of the previous series.
The first trilogy has some parallels as well, the Duel Monsters saga has some things related with Zexal, Gx with Arc-V, and 5D is the most mature and share that element with Vrains.

From the ones i watched, and kind of remember:
    • [Season 0] - "What if we play ANY game... TO DEATH! No, really, whoever loses gets set on fire, i dunno." -"Uhmm..." -"Yes, i take chess THAT seriously!"
    • [OG Series] - Kid unlocks the soul of an ancient pharaoh who for some reason is REALLY good at tabletop games, trapped in a ancient egyptian's pimp necklace. Flamboyant billionaire makes tournament island. Oh, also there's an ancient prophecy and cultists wants the necklace.
    • [GX] - Boarding school to get good at the card game, that gets involved in a lot of occult and ritualistic stuff. From feels good/underdog story to black magic, sacrifices, paranormal detective and death... but friendship!
    • [5D's] - Society divided between the poor constantly harassed by police and living in the slums. 1% living on penthouses watching card games in motorcycles. Blonde dude takes bike and card from the protag to try and make a break for the good life. Protag tries to get his shit back but ends up in jail and marked as a criminal (yellow scars). Yadda yadda, ancient prophecy, dark rituals, police brutality, gang violence, someone gets the rope, nuclear meltdown, time travel... and a full episode of blond dude trying to find a job to buy good coffee... Favorite ygo show.
    • [Zexal] - Kid has dreams of an alien who is really good at card games, also has weird triangular necklace (this feels familiar...). Alien tries to make a gamer out of him. School stuff, some big tournament... then secret society, a lot of numbers, some alien stuff, deaths (a lot), become super saiyan and prevent the end of the world.
    • [Arc-V] - Kid with necklace (you: "and a mystical be-") and NO MYSTICAL BEING (you: "oh?") plays card games. His dad is Hugh Jackman in The Greatest Showman, but with cards, and wants to be like him. Rival is a rich/philantropist/genius that is actually getting ready for an Interdimensional War and invasion, so he needs to assemble the avengers to face the invaders.
There's a resistance group, genocide and a lot of war criminals, 2 in particular who really love to murk "scum". Also "Multiple Personality Disorder" is taken to a whole other level, but the power of showmanship, entertainment and friendship will save us all!
...Or it might have been what doomed them all to begin with, who knows?

If I had to recommend two series, it would probably be 5D's and Arc-V:
*5D's can have a lot of memes of "duels in motocicles", but the background and social criticism (at times quite cold and cruel) give a unique and interesting atmosphere to the series, since it not only affects the development of it (in more than one way), but it is possible to see how said environment changes as the series progresses. Personally, I consider it to be the most mature series in the franchise and that's exactly why I highly recommend it.
*In the case of Arc-V, the series starts off with a plot that seems calm, but it quickly starts to get mysterious and before you know it you'll be immersed in a dimensional conflict. Another interesting detail is that this is the first series to use all the existing summoning methods introduced to date, which provides a huge variety of interesting duels. And about what you pointed out, yes, there are cameos from characters from GX (Azuka), 5D's (Jack), and Zexal (Kaito).
And so you don't miss out on information about the others, here's a brief summary:
-Season 0: Originally Yu-Gi-Oh! wasn't going to be about the card game. No joke.
-Duel Monsters: It's hard to say something you probably don't know, but it's basically how an ancient Egyptian magic ends up becoming the game we know and all the consequences that brings.
-Zexal: A weak duelist (very weak) ends up involved with a "spirit" with amnesia (to call it in a way so as not to give spoilers) and that encounter unleashes a series of events that escalate and escalate; all of them related to the lost memories that this "spirit" must recover, while the protagonist must improve if he doesn't want to perish along the way. This series starts off a little slow, but when the tournament starts it picks up pace and it doesn't stop until the end. By the way, the card with cards rotating among it its maybe the most powerful thing in the entire franchise.
-Vrains: Duels in a virtual environment, technology, an AI that everyone wants to capture or destroy and a protagonist who seeks revenge.
    Regards ^^

Only reason I know this for fact is I watched it as it aired since S5 was the year I moved on my own after graduating high school with GX airing later in 2005.

The protagonist of GX, Jaden in the dub or Judai in the original he starts with a deck of an archetype called Elemental Heroes, which is based Superheroes in general and he later one on the 2nd season mix'em up with another archetype called Neo-Spacians.
An GX is heavily focused on Fusion Summoning, which started the trend of each series putting a type of Summing front and center.
The 3rd which is Yugioh 5Ds introducing Synchro summoning (white color framed monster cards).
The 4th,Yugioh Zexal Introducing XYZ ("Ik-seez" summoning) summoning (black color framed monster cards).
The 5th Yugioh Arc-V introducing Pendulum summoning (Half-green framed color monster cards) in the first season but later one bring back the previous Ritual, Fusion, Synchro, XYZ summoning along side the new Pendulum summoning.
The 6th series Yugioh Vrains introduced Link summoning (Royal Blue color framed monster cards with and hexagonal bee hive pattern slightly showing).
The 7th, Yugioh Sevens doesn’t introduced a new summing mechanic, but and new alternate format of playing Duel Monsters called Rush Duels which in simpler terms reduces the size of the decks and battle field for more “fast passed” duels, but with NO especial types o monsters cards like fusion, synchro, etc, only normal and effect monsters.
And the 8th and so far latest series Yugioh GO RUSH, is an spiritual successor to Sevens since they continued play Rush Duels (this format exists in real life but only in Japan so far), but now introduction Fusion Summoning to Rush Duels.
Y not the same but Rush Duels is similar and inspired on the alternate Yugi format called Speed Duels, were too the deck and battle field is down sized as well as the card pool, for a simpler and type o game similar to the one player yugi early days, and that wish what was later used for the basis of the APP of Yugioh DUEL LINKS, which started in 2016 with only the Duel Monsters characters and a small card pool with cards expansion sets and starter/structure decks being released every so often.
And new worlds have been added every year based on the different anime incarnations, GX, 5Ds, The Dark Side of Dimensions Movie, Zexal, Arc-V, Vrains, Sevens, with more playable characters and extensions to the card pool with every addition, and on this October the Go Rush world.

Duel Monsters, GX and 5Ds take place in the same timeline just now and te same time, GX can be 10 to 20 years after Duel Monsters, and 5Ds is way later perhaps 50+ years after GX, from then onwards each series takes place on alternate realities, where the events of previous shows may have happened, or happened somewhat different, if not at all.

It's really cool to see someone reacting to these, I watched 5D's a few years ago and the openings were just banger after banger, easily my favorite part of Yu-gi-oh especially considering I never watched it as a kid opposed to DM and GX, it just felt a lot more mature in tone and character wise, stakes were high, villains were cool, the signer dragons are still some of the coolest iconic groups of cards imo and the decks that support them.

So, Yu-Gi-Oh season 0 was made under Toei animation, back when Bandai was kind of the lead merchandise license holder for the franchise. It essentially just covers the original run of the Yu-Gi-Oh manga before it went under the Yu-Gi-Oh Duelist label. It begins all the way with Yugi unlocking the power of the Millennium Puzzle, and lasts all the way up to the Dark RPG with the first appearance of Yami Bakura. There's obviously plenty of differences between the manga and the first anime. For example, the character Miho in the manga is not a main character. She appeared in only one chapter of the manga as a crush Honda (Tristan) had. In the anime, she is made into one of the main characters of the group just to increase the amount of female characters.
After Toei did their own Yu-Gi-Oh movie, ownership of Yu-Gi-Oh landed with Konami, and they changed animation studio from Toei Animation to Studio Gallop, creating the show, Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Monsters. They started with the beginning of Duelist Kingdom arc, mostly to capitalize on the highly profitable card game, but also because Toei already did all the pre-Duelist Kingdom stuff. This does lead to a lot of key moments for season 0 being loosely adapted and included into season 1, such as both Kaiba stealing Grandpa's Blue-Eyes White Dragon and his first/second duel with Yugi)the Death T arc being quickly adapted into the first episode, Yami Bakura's Dark RPG and first appearance being adapted into his first duel against the Pharaoh, Shadi's first encounter with Yugi. They basically just give you the important bits.

To best explain the continuity between the different yugioh series is that they are spin-offs of the original and each have different level of connection to each other. So you just assume they aren't connected until the show itself says otherwise. This really comes to a head in Arc-V where we have, what is in essence, alternate version of previous characters.

Season 0 actually takes place before DM which is why characters are mostly aware of each other and certain events prior to episode 1 of DM. Some stuff is shifted around and reintroduced, such as Yami Yugi's duel with Kaiba (technically for the 2nd time), since it is produced by a different company and the rights for the IP shifted at the time.
Personally, I'd watch the series in Japanese. Uncensored, better music/tone for serious moments, and an overall different feel compared to the English dub.

    Quick summary:
GX - Generation next, mainly school life but fighting back a villain called darkness, focusing on fusion summon, MC's Ace is Elemental hero Neo (and evil hero deck for a short arc)
5Ds - 5 Dragons, regarding 5ppl using 5 dragons to save the world (turn out 6 dragons), focusing synchron summon (adding level together), MC's ace is stardust dragon
Zexal - about two dimensions got wars, but their war come to earth, the spirit you say is from one side and MC help him, focusing on xyz summon (put two same level monster together to summon same rank monster) MC's Ace is No.39 Utopia Ray
Arc-V, worst anime in the history, about dimensional wars, Fusion dimension wants to fuse with Standard dimension, Synchron dimension and xyz dimension, so the GX/5Ds/zexal character come back, focusing Pendulum summon (setting two P monster in p monster zone, with different scales, the level and rank within the scale can be summoned freely), 4 MC from each dimension.
The main one (riding reptile) Ace is Odd-eye pendulum dragon; the one you thought is rival his Ace is Dark rebellion xyz dragon, the one with blue and yellow hair you though is new from op3 his Ace is Clear wing sychron dragon and the purple hair you think very cool his Ace is starving venom fusion dragon
Vrains - forgot major storyline, but mainly about 6 AI program, focusing on link Summon, ermm... very difficult to explain, anyway MC's Ace was Firewall dragon, but it is too OP, real life forbidden to use, so changed to Encode talker
actually there is sevens and go rush after vrains, but it is more about a new system of card gaming, so fair to stop to vrains, and you could take time to do reactions to the remaining two

33:34 is arc FIVE, V is the roman number because is the fifth series, yes this series go to the previews other show, but is not as a timeline but a different dimension, the one that connect the time lines are 5Ds Gx and Duel monsters on the movie bonds beyond time

For the yugioh series: Original, 5D's, and Vrains starts dark. GX, Zexal, Arc V, and the two you missed(Sevens and Go Rush) start out happy go lucky, but get dark. Arc V is great, but a number of people(myself included) feel that the end was rushed and that there were missed potential in it. Oh, and as a side note, Sevens and Go Rush are interconnected.

I've recently gone through both DM and GX in Japanese, and both are significantly better in Japanese once you get used to the non english names. Long story short to answer some questions you had asked without spoiling much
    1. Season 0 takes place before duel monsters and the official card game happened, the story is basically a horror slice of life showing different tabletop games other than card games.
    2. The last season of DM does take place in Egypt for most of the time as it show the Pharaoh's origin.
    3. Yu-Gi-Oh GX was what started the monster catalogue of Archetypes for decks (Elemental Heroes, Cyber Angel, Ancient Gears, Roids, Destiny Heroes, Volcanics, etc). Sad fact, the English Dub was never finished and ended before the last episode of season 3 with no dub of the final season.
    4. Again like GX, 5Ds never got an English dub for their final season as well and had even skipped some episodes before that, which caused some plot holes within the dub.
    5. In Zexal the blue spirit that follows around the MC is named Astral who's basically like the Yami Yugi of the their series in which he helps the MC in his duels as well as trying to recover his memories.
    6. The V in Arc-V is a 5 in Roman numeral as it indicates as the 5th Yu-Gi-Oh series. Some characters from previous series return in the series but they are not the same characters entirely, they take place in different dimensions.
    7. Vrains is actually an acronym for Virtual Reality Artificial Intelligence Network System, every duel takes place in a virtual world. Fun fact, the first opening was sung by Tommy who sang some Jojo's Bizarre Adventure openings.

For the GX part, Jadens deck gimmick is the E-Heros, or Elemental Heros. A very fusion based theme. Each 'base' card represents a super hero/super sentai type character, and then you fuse them into bigger badder ones. Example, the green bri with wings is Elemental Hero Wingman, and the lady in skintight red is Elemental Hero Burstinatrix, and whent they fuse, they become the big guy with the dragon arm that you commented on looking super cool, Elemental Hero Flamewingman. There is also E-Hero Mudman who is the golem you commented on, and the earth attribute one, and E-Hero Bubbleman who is the water E-Hero. They each have various fuses with eachother, and i think some of their fusions have fusions, and they have a whole 'archetype' with cards thst soecifically effect 'Elemental Hero' cards.
Most of the characters in GX have very specific themed deck. Alexis, the girl that looks like Mai, uses 'female only' cards, so while harpies would qualify, she's not linited just them. The weird looking guy with the frills and make up is BASICALLY Proffessor Snape from Harry Potter, but somehow worse written.
The start of the series is pretty light hearted where the stakes are things like 'loser gets extra chores ' and the occasional 'loser is expelled'. It gets more serious later.
The school has 3 houses, each named abd color coded after the god cards, Slifer Red, Ra Yellow and Obelisk Blue, with red being the worst students and blues being 'the best'which really just means the richest, just like IRL yugioh. I don't remember if the gods show up in the series, but there are some knock offs they nade for GX called the Divine Beasts or some bs like that.
Overall, highly recommend a GX watch.

To explain all series to my understanding:
Season 0: What if you took Chess too seriously?
DM: Card games with Egyptian mythos mixed with Sci-Fi because a rich kid wants a salty runback
GX: High school Shounen MC turned Emo because his ancestor's Non-binary probably gay bestfriend wanted to go inside him (Actually succeeds... in a good way?)
5DS: The feeling of playing Poker and Mario Kart simultaneously mixed with Existential crisis, Cults, and Time travel.
ZeXal: Sci-Fi Duel Monsters feat. Super Saiyan. One of the few times I accepted the arrival of Aliens in the final half of the series
Arc-V: Yu-Gi-Oh crossover extravanganza, following Ronald Mcdonald's descent to becoming Multiversal Satan, somehow the only one of the series I finished watching. (TF is that ending tho? the other 3 deserved more)
Vrains: V-tubers playing Yu-Gi-Oh on surfboards against a terrorist group. Ai is best waifu bite me.
    Bonus:
Sevens: Children's card games played by actual Children. MC somehow has the worst Win/Loss ratio of all Yu-Gi-Oh Protagonists
Go Rush: Yu-Gi-Oh with aliens feat. The Sevens MC losing even more. Somehow this is also the past of the Sevens world

You need to watch the Egyptian arc. It's really good.
The first half of 5Ds is really good too, but the last two OP for 5Ds are the best for 5Ds,
but I've heard the story was drastically changed due to optics after a major cult was exposed
and a character being demoted due to her involvement in the real life cult.
I believe they had to rewrite everything for the second half due to this.
