I think we’ve all made that mistake at least once. At least, I’ve made that mistake. I mean, who knew “J. Marsden” was such a common first initial last name combo.
Honestly, what annoyed me most about this show wasn't the CGI, or the fact nothing really happens... It's more the fact that there's a severe lack of continuity from the previous show. Like, wasn't Wuya in human form? Isn't Raimundo leader of the team now? Like, this annoyed me so much that I never gave the show any chance.
Apparently the changes (including names of Shen Gong Wu, and Dojo's colours) was because of a copyright thing. Apparently while the creator could still make the new show Warner Bros owned the names. So thats why they had to change names and even in Wuya's case why she's a ghost and how she was imprisoned by Dashi.
I like alternate dimensions and OVAs and stuff, but I feel like I wasn’t as disappointed because I somehow didn’t know of Chronicles until it was already out. The lack of continuity episode to episode really bothers me more, but both ways make sense
My disappointment was that there was no real ways to use the shen gon wu creatively in chronicles enough except the Honey Badger because that one speaks for itself.
To this day it still boggles my mind that they literally invented Omi with green glasses to add to the team instead of just bringing in Jermaine, who had multiple points of buildup in the previous series
Raimundo didn’t even get a showdown but at least he was heavily involved in the original show. If you include chronicles, clay is actually the most neglected character in all likelihood lol
I remember when this first came out everyone got excited. But then, the series continued. And after a certain point, fans of Xiaolin Showdown just started pretending that it didn't exist
Tomoko episode feels like some amateur fanfic. -Relative of main cast we never heard of out nowhere -Have some super important work like being spy -Manages swindle a once genius main bad guy -For some reason she has dinosaur pet Lot characters getting family members we never heard of Kimiko sister, Clay brother (wtf happened to his sis?) and Ping-Pong (even if it wasn’t confirmed. Also out of all characters we never see Raimundo family members, whose family members were often mentioned in Showdown (I think they were).
Yeah bringing a character out of nowhere usually feels cheap, but should focus more on the development of the main character, and Kimiko didn’t really have any development here
Honestly, they need to have a Xiaolin Showdown to determine which one has to change their name. They're too close in sound and so far in blood, it must be done.
Wow, I can officially say Xiaolin chronicles rotted my brain because I have no idea how I misread and researched down that path lol. Thank you for noticing this
I quit watching Chronicles almost as soon as I started. The lack of continuity from Showdown was a major turn off (I wanted to see Raimundo as leader!) and then the gross out humor just got too be too much. I adored Showdown, but I refuse to acknowledge Chronicles.
The video took me much longer to make then I anticipated because watching it was very difficult, if I wasn’t paying attention and writing notes the whole time I was pretty lost at points
@@Colby2D The show tries to act like a continuity to the original but it changed so many things it boggles my mind and is hard to follow then the end of the series is them flat out randomly saying Omi is related to Chase SOMEHOW.... And never explain why lmao.
Shaolin Chronicles had big “I have a project due tomorrow so I am going to copy Wikipedia and change names” energy. And Ping Pong was literally just a more annoying early s1 Omi. Why?
The older I get the more I realize how goated my childhood was, Digimon, Roughnecks, Teen Titans, Avatar, TMNT 2003/1987, Randy Cunningham, Batman TAS/Beyond, Static, Xaolin Showdown, Transformers Beast Wars, Jackie Chan, and this channel has proven to me It wasn't just nostalgia, literally spent my weekend binging the TMNT 1987 Marathon they have on Amazon Prime Video and I still enjoy the heck out of it. Despite a lot of shows being made to sell toys back then, they had actual heart and care put into them, the only things kids get these days is slop remake/reboots like Chronicles or Teen Titans GO that wear the skins of the shows we used to love, like some kind of uncanny skinwalker alternate. It shares the resemblance at a glance, but once you look closer you start noticing the uncanny differences.
For me I don’t mind the slightly uncanny differences between reboots and the original shows, but I definitely prefer the writing and structure of the late 90s, felt like there was really just lightning in a bottle with what the creators could do to lead their shows, not the networks and corporations
I feel that using CGI for the showdowns was a major double-edged sword. On one hand, it made them easier and cheaper to animate. On the other hand, it meant that some showdown settings got reused and only characters with 3D models could take part in showdowns. I feel like that takes away some of the show's appeal. Seeing minor villains or one-off characters get involved in showdowns was a really fun aspect of the original show. Now that I think about it, the CGI might also be behind why Ping Pong is just Omi with glasses. It was easy to modify Omi's model to make one for him.
That’s a really interesting point, like Omi and ping pong probably have the same model, clay and his brother had the same model, master fung was a sparkle lol
fun fact. the five chinse elements are water, fire, air, earth, and metal/wood. thats why people were doing the jack as meatal, and why thats mostly imposible after ping joined
actually not impossible, the chinese elements (wuxing) are fire, water, earth, metal, and wood with air not being a part of it at all. that said, probably couldnt have him join the team due to warner brothers shenanigans or something
@@flowerheart2054earth, wind, fire, and air are elements based on the Greek elements, while water, fire, earth, wood, and metal are based on the Chinese elements, aka the Wuxing. Xiaolin Chronicles just kind of awkwardly meshed them together.
honestly i hated that they revealed that chase and omi were related. Not that the idea was bad. But that they never did anything with it. Like this detail could have humanized chase and made his past actions be looked into a different light. Like was the reason why he was so after omi being on his side had nothing to with some sort chosen one thing or anything evil. Just a part of him wanting his family back in some way.
Yeah the execution of it told me it didn’t matter and that I was dumb for caring about it lol, like clearly it’s inconsequential for them to be related. Chase also builds ping pong up to be this pure ball of potential but what made chase cool was he would have these private conversations with Omi in showdown and they’d learn they’re not too different, here he just whispers in Omi’s ear and puts ping pong in a cage
I found out by looking up Xiaolin Showdown on Amazon prime a few years ago. I have no idea how people heard of it before that unless they have cable with DisneyXD. FOMO 😭
Yeah the fact he had no struggles between good and evil and was never righteous hurt a lot, the closest we got to that was him disregarding shen gong wu, but now we know it’s just because they would take his power (in the lore of Chronicles)
I'm so happy to see people still talking about Xiaolin Showdown. I'm a super fan and major collector, but I'm autistic so it is SO hard for me to put myself out there and enjoy the community. If anyone ever wants to collab on xiaolin showdown content, I'm 20 years late and ready to fully immerse myself now 😂 Great video, I actually forgot Clay was Johnny Bravo's voice and that was awesome to remember!
Chronicles always felt more like a Reboot disguised as a Continuation to Showdown. The designs of the characters look a bit too different, all the previous voices for the characters have been replaced except for Omi's that just feels jarring, they added in a younger character (Ping-Pong) to appeal to a younger crowd, changing the name of the _Shen Gong Wu_ to just "Wu" and overall it lack much continuity from the OG series. Its pretty clear why intrest in this show dropped up fast.
38:26 min in so dont know if it’s mentioned later but-I heard that the major issue was that this was made in Canada (where Christy Hui was) and the new Canadian laws led to a myriad of changes including VA. Like, the law required people to have Canadian citizenship which only Tara Strong had, hence only her being retained. Also, the humor was geared more towards Canadian humor which apparently was more body horror/gross out, hence why Dojo started having rashes or other skin disorders for other characters.
As much as I loved Xiaolin Showdown, I couldn’t get behind the drastic changes Chronicles made, it’s unfortunate because I look fondly on Showdown but Chronicles seems like a blur
I think from one season to another that had the biggest change would maybe be American Dragon or George of the Jungle. Chase Young was played by Cyclops and guy from Hop, easter bunny movie.
I really forgot about the change of George of the Jungle. I feel like I really liked that show and I know if I go back it’ll probably be bad and I’ll be embarrassed I used to like it. But I also trust my taste wouldn’t change and I should trust my gut lol
7:21 Imagine if Shadow/Willow was a triple agent and we got a later on twist that EVERYTHING we had seen was so the Xaiolin Warriors could keep a close eye on Chase Young.
I find it really funny how Ping Pong is considered THE THING of Chronicles but his involvement dwindled into nothing like not even halfway? You barely spoke of him after the billards lmao. WHY DOES HE EXIST. SHADOW SHOULDA BEEN THE 5th WARRIOR OR JUST JACK. Or screw it both?? It coulda been Shadow at first but when she abandons them its clear Jack has finally turned or something idk. Point is, screw Pingpong.
I loved Shaolin Showdwn...and as a kid i didnt know this was a sequel show u thought it was a really bad 4rth season...it was one if the furst times u droped a show

@@brandonogden2210 here's hoping she and the crew are successful this time. I can tell she's got a lot of love for this IP still after all this and appreciate and respect her. Just hopefully this next show has better conditions and more quality control
Definitely. I think nowadays there’s a lot bigger of an audience for animation outside of the 5-10 year old demographic because of streaming services and stuff, but that’s always an issue with reboots and sequels, though I feel like I can still enjoy a lot of shows from a slightly more objective point of view even if they skew young, chronicles was felt much more immature than showdown. A young audience really had no means to access chronicles, then go to showdown, so it didn’t help
I believe in the Theory that this is one of the Alternate timelines with Kimiko being chosen as the leader instead of Raimundo being chosen, as well as the different named shen gong wu. Which I feel is an interesting way to spin and explain the different vibes. And the Idea of Omi and Chase connection being slightly interesting.
Thanks for the time you spent on this. I didn't get to see anything of this "spinoff?" and didn't know it was this bad. I now know to never go near this show and to love the original. You sounded so defeated by the end of the video. Thank you again for your hard work.
Honestly ideas from this season are not the worst for a new season. Having Shadow as the fifth member who pursues her arc as a villain turned maybe hero through getting out of the abusive relationship Chase has her in would be interesting. Also cause her element is always fascinating in fiction when you try to do good with darkness or shadows since they are usually dark or evil powers. Yet they could show the good or at least necessity of such an element. Also the finale giving us lore on other elemental dragons of the past and even the idea that the mystical items of the show are actually items made with the chi of former monks is interesting. It explains where this magic comes from and how Daishi made them yet also gives more understanding to the groups own personal weapons later in season 3. As like the first step in that making of idea. It's just this show is so horribly executed on a story perspective that they never could do that. Though since you watched Code Lyoko maybe once you finish you can do its terrible continuation and talk about which is worse. (My moneys on Evolution but that's just me :)
I’m really excited to watch evolutions, My next 2 videos are code lyoko and mucha lucha’s second seasons, but I love watching through stuff in part so I can finally properly see the weird spin offs
@@Colby2D That's fair! I am just glad to hear the Code Lyoko marathon is continuing. I was a bit worried due to how much longer each seasons compared to other shows you reviewed.
Taking an honest look at loonatics unleashed would be really fun because I’ve never seen it I’ve just heard it always in “worst cartoons ever” lists, but I know people that genuinely like it
I really appreciate the way you go over material. Presenting alternatives ina manner in which you could see it improve but also not presenting only the negatives in the item you are talking about. Shows a good deal of writing skills and maturity to not just only focus on the negatives. Kudos.
Thank you I appreciate it. Animation is really tough so I can understand why things go wrong, I just am not a big fan of how most animation RUclipsrs are really angry and rage hairy and wanted to bring a more chill vibe lol
Animation IS hard, and that’s exactly why there is no excuse for execs to push animators to rush out episodes that are half-baked especially when it comes to a sequel of already beloved shows
The Chinese elements, Wood, Fire, Water, Fire and METAL. The Greek elements: Earth, Water, Fire Air. I really thought the "twist element" would be a Metal warrior. With Jack Spicer becoming Good/Neutral But I could not get past episode 2 to find out lol
I never knew metal was an element before hearing people talk about Xiaolin showdown, I feel like avatar made a lot of kids in the west familiar with the elements system
@Colby2D I had a phase of learning all about the "Chinese zodiac", and I learned through that interest, that not only do the animals have a cycle, but there are Elements attached to them. The book I had, had a list of historical figures, and some celebrities, and had their Zodiac sign, and their element. It was a fun little book. It would be hilarious if that got incorporated into Avatar the Last Airbender. Aang, the Air Bison sign lol
Thanks for memory refreshing there, I've already seen all of the episodes of Xiaolin Chroniceles on wco stream last year. You've change my perspective on XC and i sorta agrere with a lot of you're dialogue, thoughts and opinions in this video on Chase Young, Raimundo, Ping pong, Jack Spicer and the 26 episodes.
I would just like to clarify that Chase Young was voiced by Jason Marsden and not James Marsden. They have similar names but are not related. Jaseon Marsden is a pretty great voice actor though who's done a lot of work in TV and Gaming. He's the main voice of Max Goof from the Goofy Cartoons as well as a Goofy Movie. He's also a lot of characters in Skyrim and Fallout New Vegas.
I think I watched 4 episodes of this before giving up on it, so kudos for having the patience to watch it all the way through. If you hadn't done this video, I never would've heard David Kaye singing _In The Good Old Summertime_ , which is a real treat for someone who most prominently remembers him as Beast Wars Megatron, so thank you for that. I almost forgot that this got a whole season. IIRC they aired a few episodes as a "sneak preview" and took a hiatus before airing more. My cable company's on-demand service never bothered to put up more than the first few episodes, so I couldn't even keep up out of morbid curiosity. I do remember being very mad at Warner Bros for the copyright shenanigans, it feels like the stuff they had to change took the wind out of their sails as a continuation. I do appreciate that they tried to make light of the changes though, I remember some meta joke in the first episode about Dojo always being yellow. The way that the showdowns have such a loose connection to the plot of the episodes makes me wonder if they animated a bunch of them in one big batch before the scripts were finalized, kinda like Silver Age Superman cover art.
I wasn’t sure if ping pongs rendition was by David Kaye but that would make the most sense! And yeah the shen gong wu copyright was kinda pointless, since it’s not like they were even doing anything with the original
Really brought back memories! If I could make a recommendation could make a video on Martin Mystery! For some reason I can’t shake the feeling it’s part of the Totally Spies universe!
Thank you, I don’t know why i thought it was James, I think I’m gonna clip out those 30 seconds, (in case it does get clipped out not to make your comment look random) I appreciate it, I hadn’t really heard of Jason before but he is pretty iconic. My favorite role besides Max he’s done is probably Tino from the Weekenders
I just finished this series and I am SO disappointed. I counted all the showdowns. How was it Omi got the MOST of them with the best win streak, Ping Pong close after, Kimiko only 3 but lost 2 of them, Clay lost BOTH of his only showdowns and Raimindo did nothing. It feels like they cut out everyone else while also making Omi and Ping Pong the focus, and somehow Kimiko the only competent one. That’s not even including the terrible finale of Chase being evil cause he was basically cucked, Wuya doing nothing, and Jack just sporadically being evil?
@@Colby2Dhe didn’t. Of all the 1v1 showdowns he didn’t actually get any. Kimiko had 3, lost 2 Clay had 2, lost both Omi had 8 and only lost like 2 Ping Pong had the rest with a similar winning streak to Omi
I was 15 when this series came out. I grew up with the original. Loved the show. Had a crush on Clay🩷 I tried to give Xiaolin Chronicles a chance. But the some of the characters changed too much, the new names for th e Shen gon wu were lame. Dojo was more gross than he was in the original. Like I know he got his rashes and scales shedding whenever there’s a new wu, but in the chronicles series it was WAY more gross than his original. And his weird obsession with Master Fung in the series was a bit much. Thank god for fan artist still making their own OCs and comics to this day. I’d take the original any day than the new one.
For me it was the three reasons. 1) the lack of plot. 2) The CGI... The fights just feeling random/not connected. 3) The new characters... Willow was a shrug as I still had no idea why they added her. Discount midget... Less interesting especially if we could have had Jack join in as the fifth warrior or have him join in mid way.
The cgi didn’t bother me even though it’s a bit ugly, but it seems like there has to be some connection between the weak plot and cgi for the showdowns, because if half the showdowns were 2D, running and jumping would have no intrigue
@Colby2D sometimes when it comes to digital animation (cgi) being supplied to a show they cut costs by having another studio produce it. This isn't always the case, but it may explain the disconnect between the fights and the show as they gave the other company a list and then the studio welded the CGI fights to the best episodes they thought it would match. As there does feel like a disconnect between the fights and the episodes themselves
I watched MAYBE the first 8 episodes, got bored and moved on. Clay having a Younger Brother shouldn’t surprise me, but it did. So Clay has an Elder Sister, Jessie, and a Younger Brother. How many other siblings are conveniently left out?
Some ideas from Xiaolin Chronicles do have potential for interesting storylines. I think if they played up more of a parental relationship between Chase and Shadow with her vying for his attention but always falling short as he focuses more on Omi could make for good drama and be the main catalyst for her betrayal. At the same time I do like the explanation they give for how Shen Gong Wu are created and would be totally fine if that's the same explanation for them in Xiaolin Showdown.
Certainly not my Xiaolin show! The people who made it obviously didn’t want to completely piss The fans off, but they did. I could barely watch 5 episodes of this series! Thank you however for handling this review with care and respecting the curious fans. For me there will always only be one true Xioalin Showdown!
I'm extremely happy you did this. I actually watched… _most_ of _Xiaolin Chronicles_ (I stopped at Episode 16 - it all just blended together…) and researched it after. Being the fan that you are of the original, I was hoping to see your opinion on this "alternate universe" series. (That's seriously what it is.) It's universally panned for a reason, ha hah~ I'd like to point out that the dog that give therapy to Jack and Wuya is Muffin Face, who is Tubbimura's pet chihuahua. Also, the ghost bikers that Wuya and Shadow free toward the end are, in fact, alternate universe versions of the Black Vipers. (This minor point was not mentioned at all in the video.) Lastly? I liked Ping-Pong. Like, genuinely. (:
That’s really cool, I’m so happy you thought of that. I assumed the chihuahuas was katnappe’s for some reason even though that wouldn’t make sense lol. I hardly remember the vipers even from the original, or when they showed up really
In the original, The Black Vipers were led by Clay's sister, Jesse, yeah. In _Chronicles,_ though, the ghost bikers that Wuya summons are called "The Mean Girls Viper Club". Not a single character is named, but the leader (voiced by Cree Summer, of all people) looks strikingly Jesse Bailey, herself. Would've been kind of neat if, in a tentative Season 2, we find out that Jesse found a cursed Shen Gong Wu and abused its power. And that's the saddest part of _Chronicles._ So much potential seemingly squandered… It could've been a lot better, but wound up being "just another kid's cartoon". ):
@@DarkEclipse23 More or less. I think Ms. Hui, herself, said that it wasn't a direct continuation in an interview, somewhere, but still kind of canon to the original. Another fan video jokingly put it as "a reboot masquerading as a sequel series", which works for me as there _are_ references to _Showdown_ in the show.
25:48 a pawn on her pda cheats by moving two squares and not from the 2nd or 7th ranks starting square. Not only that she can’t move that pawn she moved forward. Because of the queen pinning the pawn to the king but the pawn can attack the queen which is what she should have done
Single best glow up in Xiaolin Chronicles is the Chase Young redesign, he looks more draconic and cooler than the previous lizard with humongous head and small appendages
"I don't recall any details of Raimundos childhood or family ever ." are we just going to forget when in the original Xiaolin showdown he said He has 8 brother and sisters on Chinese new year Also whats with the circus backstory ? Rai was established to be a surfer from Brazil he mentioned through the series ! so this must be an alternate universe .
He said he had a big family but we never saw them, but yeah we saw Kimiko and clay’s family, it would’ve been nice to have seen his family or have them involved in a plot in the original
It's a real shame that Chronicles didn't live up to showdown at all. If the rights issue wasn't a problem, the dialogue plot was written better, and maybe the original voice actors actually did return Xiaolin Chronicles could have been better. But, instead, we get a downgraded sequel with awful writing, unnecessary new characters, and awful CGI sequences that feel so out of place.
The story definitely is what bothered me the most, a lot of the other factors feel like icing on the cake for me, and why showdown is such an amazing show, but without strong writing it all would’ve collapsed anyways I feel
I think they make chase seem like an evangelical villain at random points this season, but yeah it’s just kinda throwing a bunch of random imagery together and didn’t work out too well. I feel like they wanted to go more of a final fantasy villain route with this, but yeah I didn’t even think of that when this happened
I actually tried watching this recently, completely forgetting i already did once before. I am incapable of getting past the pilot. You are most diligent for being able to not only watch through it, but to do so multiple times. I find it strange to take a show from when we were kids, slightly age up the characters, then write it for people younger than us. An anime adaptation or at least a version animated by a Japanese studio would go so hard. Imagine a showdown sequel made by someone like studio trigger.
The possible reason they took the sheng on Wu names from the scroll was probably due to localization reasons. They would either need to reanimate the frames where the name appears in the target language or break the immersion
Right, I guess they would be the ones responsible for changing the name for each language. It was a nice touch in the original, but they may have been stuck between a French or English audience to prioritize
@@Colby2D Even back then (even back when the original show was on. Xiaolin showdown was the exception), and specially kids shows, American productions would have in mind a worldwide distribution and avoid having writing in it. If we watch the Japanese version of Yu-Gi-Oh, they show the full card layout with text in Japanese explaining the card effect and everything, just like a real world card. But the 4kids version of the animation they just have the picture of the card with attack and defense points for monsters and nothing written under it for spells and traps.
Yeah I think with anime it makes sense because it’s outside the target audience, also I can’t imagine English text being nearly as legible as Japanese text that says so much more with less
Hello Colby2D. I just wanted to say thank you very much for uploading such an in depth review of this sequel….reboot…..following(?) of Xiaolin Showdown. I can tell that it wasn’t easy for you due to clearly lacking interest as you cover more episodes. I never understood what was the point of Ping Pong. As you said, he’s just another Omi.
Thank you for your kind words I appreciate it. I think maybe they set up ping pong as a key to Omi’s backstory and family, but without more show, it’s hard to say if that would be the case. It would be nice if they included hints to this
Like I said in one of your Xiaolin Showdown videos, Raimundo’s character is pretty much assassinated and non-existent besides one episode where he doesn’t even get his own showdown. Like he didn’t even get his own individual showdown here. Raimundo became forgettable to the point where if someone told me you mentioned Master Fung more than him throughout the video I would believe it. And that’s solely because the show didn’t care for him at all. It’s truly a waste of potential for the best character (in my opinion) with the best development in the previous show.
Thanks for following up and checking this one out! I think 90% of his lines in chronicles are just correcting Omi’s slang, which is pretty boring, he isn’t really antagonizing either, kinda like early showdown, he’s just “the stoic cool one”
The biggest copyright issue they had to deal with and what caused most of the name changes had to deal with the toys that were out as well as the card game. The rights ended up getting split so many ways there were issues.
I only ever got through the first episode of this way back in the day. Watching your video now, it's crazy that it looks like they just bought one really cheap pack of 3D assets. The pirate ship aside, soany of the challenges are them jumping in between spheres flying across the screen. Like, they don't even rexture or recolor very much. Like they just made one giant stock footage for showdowns just to throw in.

The video took me much longer to make then I anticipated because watching it was very difficult, if I wasn’t paying attention and writing notes the whole time I was pretty lost at points
I Tried i think i got though 4 episodes and i loved the orginal
Goes to show that, sometimes, standards and practices actually DO have a point.
Sometimes.
Why?
I just can’t stand ping pongs voice, it’s grating
@@Colby2D Tara Strong is such a champ. It’s too bad not all of her characters are good.
We just had better stuff back in the 90's and early 00's, nostalgia be damned.
Don't let anyone convince you it's just nostalgia. This content was just good quality.
Isn't it Water, Fire, Earth, Metal and Wood? Like I don't remember Air being one of elements
@@flowerheart2054earth, wind, fire, and air are elements based on the Greek elements, while water, fire, earth, wood, and metal are based on the Chinese elements, aka the Wuxing. Xiaolin Chronicles just kind of awkwardly meshed them together.
@@velvi8359 yep, as i thought
honestly i hated that they revealed that chase and omi were related.
I remember being so confused as a child when this appeared on TV.
I always felt like people could see Ping Pong and not even know there was a sequel
im convinced that Xiaolin Chronicles take place on alternative universe
I think it splinters off a timeline after season 1 (or 2?)
I was so happy when i found out that it was continuing. But the first episode when they changed the Orb of Tornami's name, i was pissed
I definitely have gaslighted the names of several shen gong wu because of this like monkey spear / monkey staff
To be fair, they had to due to licensing.
For the longest time I taught it was supposed to be called the orb of TSUNAMI, not TORNAMI
@@Smith-fg1qb Fucking same lmao
I found out by looking up Xiaolin Showdown on Amazon prime a few years ago. I have no idea how people heard of it before that unless they have cable with DisneyXD. FOMO 😭
It's crazy how they went through the whole show without giving Raymundo a single Xiaolin Showdown
I know he really went from arguably the most involved character to a background character just there to correct omi’s sayings
What they did to chase in this show was criminal. They discarded the whole implication of chase being a double agent against evil.
Yeah the fact he had no struggles between good and evil and was never righteous hurt a lot, the closest we got to that was him disregarding shen gong wu, but now we know it’s just because they would take his power (in the lore of Chronicles)
I'm still pissed Jack was denied his intended redemption arc where he obtains the elemental power of metal.
It would’ve been so cool
I'm so happy to see people still talking about Xiaolin Showdown. I'm a super fan and major collector, but I'm autistic so it is SO hard for me to put myself out there and enjoy the community.
If anyone ever wants to collab on xiaolin showdown content, I'm 20 years late and ready to fully immerse myself now 😂
Great video, I actually forgot Clay was Johnny Bravo's voice and that was awesome to remember!
Thanks for checking it out! I know There’s a Xiaolin discord, I don’t really use it but the group seems nice if you’re looking for fans
I'm also about 20 years late to the xiaolin showdown fandom. Mainly thanks to the time I was born.
Not even pepperidge farm remembers chronicles
38:26 min in so dont know if it’s mentioned later but-I heard that the major issue was that this was made in Canada (where Christy Hui was) and the new Canadian laws led to a myriad of changes including VA. Like, the law required people to have Canadian citizenship which only Tara Strong had, hence only her being retained. Also, the humor was geared more towards Canadian humor which apparently was more body horror/gross out, hence why Dojo started having rashes or other skin disorders for other characters.
That actually explains a lot.
As much as I loved Xiaolin Showdown, I couldn’t get behind the drastic changes Chronicles made, it’s unfortunate because I look fondly on Showdown but Chronicles seems like a blur
The changes were definitely jarring, not my biggest issue, but when everything else is going wrong it can definitely be the final straw
I tried to watch this after watching your review of Showdown… and gave up after episode 5. Thanks for summarizing and suffering for us!
Dang, you made it 5 episodes?
Chase really said "if god can make a woman from a mans rib, then sk can I "
I could see chase being a bit more of an evangelical villain, they seem to portray him like that a little bit with his creations and honor i feel
The new red uniforms annoy me so bad cause it looks like they were using them backwards and i cannot unsee it every time it appears!
I think the fact there isn’t a vertical black stripe makes it look like that, it’s pretty odd
Or Johnny Test
7:21 Imagine if Shadow/Willow was a triple agent and we got a later on twist that EVERYTHING we had seen was so the Xaiolin Warriors could keep a close eye on Chase Young.
I feel like that may have been an original path for her, they kinda gave tomoko the double cross, willow kinda reminds me of terra from teen titans
@@Colby2D Always fun to imagine how a not so good work coulda been better just by using the existing pieces better.
It feels so good knowing people to this very day are also obsessed with Xiaolin Showdown
Yea before I knew it got a spinoff, I thought i missed a episode of showdown where Omi actually got some style due to a shingonwo or some magic curse.
I always think of how many people must have thought the glasses were just a shen gong wu
This show was literally made to take all the worst aspects of Xiaolin Shadow fan fiction that is out there and make it into a show.
I was groaning about Ping Pong getting plot armor for shining in the talent show until he began singing. I wasn't familiar with his game.
Right? I didn’t know he could slide like that, all is forgiven
Honestly having ping pong jack and shadow join the crew and we just have a big squad traveling around like one piece would have been kinda sick lol
Chase looks like he jumped out of Courage the cowardly dog!
Definitely resembles return the slab’s cgi style lol

To anyone who loves Xiaolin Showdown, get ready for Dec 21, at 11:30 pm, on MeTV Toons, for that may be the day Xiaolin Showdown airs once more on Television.
Aw, that would be the coolest thing ever! I forgot that WB made the show, and they're making MeTV Toons.
Omg that's awesome
My least favorite part is how they massacred Chase Young.
He went from formidable foe to... magic Jack Spicer.
He’s just so creepy to me in this one, he lost all his swag and became a goofy villain

I really do hope so for Christy. Stay positive for Xiaolin to make a comeback.
Sequels should grow with the audience.
They made a "sequel," so it would have been cool if they upped the maturity.
Didnt continue off from where the original ended.
- no so good redesigns
- The tone shift
- THE DAMN CGI
I believe in the Theory that this is one of the Alternate timelines with Kimiko being chosen as the leader instead of Raimundo being chosen, as well as the different named shen gong wu. Which I feel is an interesting way to spin and explain the different vibes. And the Idea of Omi and Chase connection being slightly interesting.
Alternate, not Ultimate
Ultimate implies this is the best timeline💀💀💀
Thanks for the time you spent on this. I didn't get to see anything of this "spinoff?" and didn't know it was this bad. I now know to never go near this show and to love the original. You sounded so defeated by the end of the video. Thank you again for your hard work.
Thank you, it was definitely an interesting watch through haha. A lot of talent and passion behind it, but just a very odd show for a lot of reasons
One thing that upset me was that the crew seemed a little weaker and the character growth we got kinda disappeared
My friend put it best. They became at best caricatures based solely on their one quirk from the original.
Definitely see the caricature aspect especially with raimundo, like they took him being cool and made him so boring and uninterested
@@Colby2Dit’s mainly because most of his only lines involved correcting Omi’s improper quotes, sayjng a girl is hot, or being dumb.

Animation IS hard, and that’s exactly why there is no excuse for execs to push animators to rush out episodes that are half-baked especially when it comes to a sequel of already beloved shows
My brothers and I sat through all of Chronicles and nearly died.
I could only watch this show together with someone in person, it’s way too hard for it to keep my attention otherwise
The Chinese elements, Wood, Fire, Water, Fire and METAL.
The Greek elements: Earth, Water, Fire Air.
I really thought the "twist element" would be a Metal warrior. With Jack Spicer becoming Good/Neutral
But I could not get past episode 2 to find out lol
I never knew metal was an element before hearing people talk about Xiaolin showdown, I feel like avatar made a lot of kids in the west familiar with the elements system
@Colby2D I had a phase of learning all about the "Chinese zodiac", and I learned through that interest, that not only do the animals have a cycle, but there are Elements attached to them.
The book I had, had a list of historical figures, and some celebrities, and had their Zodiac sign, and their element.
It was a fun little book.
It would be hilarious if that got incorporated into Avatar the Last Airbender.

That’s cool to hear, thanks for watching! Hope you stick around for some future stuff too🙂
I would just like to clarify that Chase Young was voiced by Jason Marsden and not James Marsden.
That's because it is
It is! I'm pretty sure there was a cross-over episode at one point, but I could be mistaken.

I definitely want to cover the show soon, might do a season one retrospective sometime in the next couple months
I was ready to like this show when it was first announced, but then I watched the first five minutes, and I never looked back.
No
Chase Young was voiced by the OTHER Marsden. JASON, from boy meets world. MAX Goof from the goofy movies, Noel from ff13-2, etc.
I learned about this show not too long ago and it still feels like a fever dream
I don’t think Raimundo had a showdown excluding the zombie one, really sad
@@Colby2Dhe didn’t. Of all the 1v1 showdowns he didn’t actually get any.
Kimiko had 3, lost 2
Clay had 2, lost both
Omi had 8 and only lost like 2
Ping Pong had the rest with a similar winning streak to Omi
I was 15 when this series came out. I grew up with the original. Loved the show. Had a crush on Clay🩷
I tried to give Xiaolin Chronicles a chance.
That’s really interesting, I’ll have to check out more fan work on future videos that sounds cool
The thing I hated the most about this show was that they kinda nerfed Raimundo's character.
Yeah he almost never fought and he was very stoic, mainly just correcting Omi’s sayings
Honestly glad you watched it so I didn't have to. Amazed it got so many episodes.
I’m happy to be the sacrifice, thank you for watching. It was planned to be 3 seasons too but got canceled after the original
2:45 A bit of correction here: Chase Young was voice by veteran voice actor "Jason" Marsden, not hollywood actor James Marsden.
Younger Sister Older Brothee would complete the set, unless we acknowledge identities outside the binary.
@@youtubeuniversity3638 cant forget possible twins too, maybe clay has a twin borther and sister, as well as anyone out of the binary
Agreed. Thanks for watching and your comment, I appreciate it
I'm extremely happy you did this. I actually watched… _most_ of _Xiaolin Chronicles_ (I stopped at Episode 16 - it all just blended together…) and researched it after. Being the fan that you are of the original, I was hoping to see your opinion on this "alternate universe" series. (That's seriously what it is.) It's universally panned for a reason, ha hah~
I'd like to point out that the dog that give therapy to Jack and Wuya is Muffin Face, who is Tubbimura's pet chihuahua. Also, the ghost bikers that Wuya and Shadow free toward the end are, in fact, alternate universe versions of the Black Vipers.
(This minor point was not mentioned at all in the video.)
Lastly? I liked Ping-Pong. Like, genuinely. (:
That’s really cool, I’m so happy you thought of that. I assumed the chihuahuas was katnappe’s for some reason even though that wouldn’t make sense lol. I hardly remember the vipers even from the original, or when they showed up really
They’re not the vipers from clay’s sister are they?
In the original, The Black Vipers were led by Clay's sister, Jesse, yeah. In _Chronicles,_ though, the ghost bikers that Wuya summons are called "The Mean Girls Viper Club". Not a single character is named, but the leader (voiced by Cree Summer, of all people) looks strikingly Jesse Bailey, herself.
Would've been kind of neat if, in a tentative Season 2, we find out that Jesse found a cursed Shen Gong Wu and abused its power. And that's the saddest part of _Chronicles._ So much potential seemingly squandered… It could've been a lot better, but wound up being "just another kid's cartoon". ):
Wait this is meant to be an alt. Universe take on the series?
@@DarkEclipse23
More or less. I think Ms. Hui, herself, said that it wasn't a direct continuation in an interview, somewhere, but still kind of canon to the original. Another fan video jokingly put it as "a reboot masquerading as a sequel series", which works for me as there _are_ references to _Showdown_ in the show.
The image of Jack with the tiny master Feng is wild.
25:48 a pawn on her pda cheats by moving two squares and not from the 2nd or 7th ranks starting square. Not only that she can’t move that pawn she moved forward. Because of the queen pinning the pawn to the king but the pawn can attack the queen which is what she should have done

I wasn't even aware of this show had a sequel I just thought the original show ended and that was it
Yeah as a big fan of the original, I found it odd I hadn’t heard of chronicles until it was already out.
14:32 The willow origin feels like an adam and eve reference because god makes eve from one of adams rib
I think they make chase seem like an evangelical villain at random points this season, but yeah it’s just kinda throwing a bunch of random imagery together and didn’t work out too well. I feel like they wanted to go more of a final fantasy villain route with this, but yeah I didn’t even think of that when this happened
Chronicles was...something.
When I first saw the intro back in the day, I was hyped to see the gang fighting evil...then the actual show happened...
i was so sad that chronicles wasnt anywhere near as good as showdown i remember looking forward to it and being extremely dissapointed
I wasn’t even sad I think I just pretended nothing ever happened,
I never saw the sequel, but know a ton of the voices were changed and they got Eric Bauza on board.
That’s pretty cool, he’s an interesting voice for Jack, probably the most noticeable change in voice, not in a bad way
I actually tried watching this recently, completely forgetting i already did once before.
I’d love an anime adaption, even a 60 second short in the trigger style would be so cool
Yeah I think with anime it makes sense because it’s outside the target audience, also I can’t imagine English text being nearly as legible as Japanese text that says so much more with less
oh hay I watched it when it was on Netflix, was confused when I watching thinking it was the original
Lol I can totally see why, just with another Omi
Hello Colby2D. I just wanted to say thank you very much for uploading such an in depth review of this sequel….reboot…..following(?) of Xiaolin Showdown. I can tell that it wasn’t easy for you due to clearly lacking interest as you cover more episodes. I never understood what was the point of Ping Pong. As you said, he’s just another Omi.
Thank you for your kind words I appreciate it. I think maybe they set up ping pong as a key to Omi’s backstory and family, but without more show, it’s hard to say if that would be the case. It would be nice if they included hints to this
Xiaolin chronicles is the Temu version of showdown
We got Xiaolin Showdown at home
Chase's cgi model keeps reminding me of the King Ramse model from that one episode of Courage the Cowardly Dog. Especially when he talks
After recently rewatching that I can totally see that lol, especially with how smooth and untextured they are
The biggest copyright issue they had to deal with and what caused most of the name changes had to deal with the toys that were out as well as the card game. The rights ended up getting split so many ways there were issues.
That makes sense, I didn’t see a lot of merch for showdown ever but I’m sure it existed
There's a lot to pick at here but "Chase Young laying an egg" is where I draw the line
I'm glad I found this. This is the Billiam video he never made, that I've known I'd wanted. Gonna have to start following to see more stuff.
Thanks very much🙂
I think you mixed up James Marsden with Jason Marsden
Was looking for this comment. I do think Jason would make a good sonic though. His Richie from Static Shock gives me jaleel white vibes
Wow… I’m so stupid. Lol thank you for pointing this out, Chase being the voice of Tino from the Weekenders is still goated
@@Colby2D and max goof from goofy movie.
@@Darkstriker133713 - And Chester McBadbat in the later seasons of "Fairly OddParents" after Frankie Muniz left the role.
When this show was being aired I remember being really disappointed with it and wished they just played reruns of the original series
I remember watching the first episode and feeling nothing, no joy, no anger, I just turned it off and forgot about it
Hope you had a good day
Thanks Tyler, you too!
