    6:51 I think this whole episode exists to sell us on Clay. He's the odd man out of the four main characters, everyone else on the team is incredibly acrobatic, while Clay is big and slow. While he almost never actually struggles in any of his encounters here, they're set up in a way to make us doubt that Clay can pull it off. Admittedly I don't remember the episode well enough to know if anyone outright criticized Clay for his slowness, but two of the three challenges present a test of agility only for Clay to turn them into a test of intelligence and patience. It's here to set up Clay as having a valuable skillset, at least from where I'm sitting.
    Also, just as a side note, One of the coolest parts about Xiaolin Showdown for me was always how the heroes and villains were always trading powers: My best example has to be when the only item the heroes have left is the Mantis Flip Coin, which just happened to be the very first item used by Jack in a showdown. Just the fact that any power being used by the villains in one episode could be in the heroes' hands in the next and vice-versa. Fun times.

    • @Colby2D
      @Colby2D  Месяц назад +38

      Yeah Clay was definitely mocked through the episode so it definitely taught there’s multiple ways to win showdowns, which was pretty cool. And yeah it’s really interesting how they show different characters using the same shen gong wu, it’s such a good way to express character

    Omi's golden skin just seemed like a reference to the Buddha to me. Even though he stands out like crazy, it's not unheard of for main characters to become artistically distinct from the rest. The Simpsons is an example. A couple seasons in, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie are pretty much the only characters whose hair are a part of their skull, so they don't even look like they fit in to their own show.
    Omi was probably conceived VERY early in pre-production, and they were too attached to how he looked to change him after they decided on a style.

She did pull one "sudden but inevitable betrayal" with Mala Mala Jong, but... well, I can forgive her for that as her patience was almost assuredly shot from close proximity to Jack Spicer for an extended length of time.

    I like how the episodes where you were saying they had no lessons (Germaine and the Sun-Chi Lantern) had no moral payoff when it did on the arc overall: Omi's story. Starting out as one who believed he was the only dragon warrior and did not trust in others, those two episodes are where he develops the most. It might not be overt, but working with a stranger, even going as far as to offer him a spot with him, and finally trusting and seeing the powers his fellow dragon warriors had that did not were massive for his development

      Yeah, I did hate the way a lot of his depth was dropped in the later seasons. In the first, he could be a bit daft on some things, but on the whole was actually pretty clever, and a tricky foe. Then in the later seasons, he got stupider and stupider, to the point where sometimes you wondered how he still remembered to breath in some scenes. Ironically, that is the one thing I like about Chronicles. Jack there felt a lot more back to his Season 1 characterization, in a good way.

    I loved how Kimiko’s outfit changed all the time.
    But I also love Raimundo’s character arc over the whole series. From a cocky guy who made jokes, to his turn to evil, to redeeming himself, and ending the series by becoming the leader. Him becoming leader was also a departure because you would’ve expected the kid in the logo would have been the leader.
    Makes me wonder if Chase was wrong about Omi being “the chosen one” which wasn’t really expanded upon. There was no prophecy or anything and even his “dots” have no explanation. He just kinda glows which makes me think of Avatar State stuff but it’s not stated what it means. But if there’s a chosen one prophecy it probably applies to Raimundo or the team as a whole rather than a single individual.

He thinks he knows what’s best but is actually very deeply out of his depths when confronted by real wuxia magic. I used to write fanfics based on this show and rollplayed as Jack quite a bit. I even created a genderbent version of Jack who was his sister. I don’t think the series was ever given a proper conclusion.

    • @Colby2D
      @Colby2D  Месяц назад +3

      That’s funny, something about jack gravitated so many people towards fan art and stuff. And the show doesn’t have a final final conclusion, but it wraps itself up really nicely where it satisfies me where it ends. I’ll cover that more in the future videos!

    Episode 2 does have a character arc, it's just not Clay's. The arc is for literally everyone else, and maybe the audience too, which is very cool.
    The big and strong but kind/soft character in cartoons tends to be always dumb, or cowardly, or naive... The episode introduces Clay, but it also proves the rest of the team (and potentially the audience who are too used to the trope) wrong and it teaches them that there's more ways to win than just being super physically proficient.

    • @Colby2D
      @Colby2D  Месяц назад

      That’s a really good point! It does a great job of showing just how important the mental aspect is to these showdowns, and clay is so unique probably my favorite character

    Xiaolin Showdown's first series was the first time I had ever seen a villain win. While it is short lived and the status quo is restored it was a big deal to see them fall to such a point of dispair. Later series tried to replicate this, like when Omi is turned evil but it was never as impactful as the first time Wuya was resurrected

  • @TehRealWeegee

    I could see Episode 10 being cool if Clay starts trying to force the cows to do what he wants, and realizes this is how his dad is teaching him. And, by changing his strategy to *guidance*, their bond grows. This would set up a fun parallel to his dad learning the same lesson and recognizing Clay's willingness to adapt.

    I absolutely adore the ending of season 1. Ray becoming an antagonist and then it ending on the most horrific note possible, with the sun eclipsing and everything corrupting and decayed at the the restored Wuyas incomprehensible power, following with one of the hardest and most threatening lines in a show made for kids.
    Omi: "...Wuya?"
    Wuja: "In the flesh."
    Chills. Just such an insanely dark way to end a season. Mad respect to the creators to go in that direction!

    Yesss, so glad somebody besides me recognizes this show's existence! Though for some reason, Jackie Chan Adventures always seems to come up when talking about this show... wonder why lol. I always preferred the ending of JCA myself, putting a very tight bow on everything, resolving every single plot thread, whereas Xialoin Showdown leaves the door open for everything by comparison. Though looking back on it through this video, I actually remember a lot more about this show than I thought. Maybe they both have their strong points.

      @@Colby2D From what I remember, it has a pretty similar plot structure, in terms of the enemy groups occasionally getting victories over the heroes, including some big enemy wins that completely shift the priorities of the heroes.

    Golden Tiger claws are my favorite Shen Gong Wu. No surprise but Tigers are my favorite animal, with Tiger claws being my favorite melee weapon. So having a pair of Tiger claws that also have the ability to rip the fabric of space and create portals, is amazing, especially when paired with how creatively they get used.
    Also ngl, I had a crush on both Cat Nappe and Kimiko when I was a kid, and now that I'm older I can agree with everyone else saying alive Wuya could get it lmao

    Man, looking back... our old cartoons were damn good. They don't make them like they used to. This thing has so much depth and I watched it out of order and with plenty of reruns, valuing whenever I would see some new episode I didn't encounter before. Now you have shows you can stream from start to end in the span of an afternoon and they have less depth than one episode of this thing.

    • @Colby2D
      @Colby2D  Месяц назад

      The show worked really well because it was pretty episodic but had the occasional mini arc. Producers really like to have shows they can play reruns of too, and I remember watching this more at nights on Cartoon Network

    Raimundo losing a lot despite being probably the strongest is on purpose. One of the cool things in this show is how being strong and a good fighter helps, but isn't everything, and his real development comes later, after his "villain arc", when he comes back and becomes the leader (another cool thing they did, since normally that position would go to Omi, who is more or less the main protagonist if there is one).

    • @digressingalice2764
