    Small fun fact about the Towers. The tops of each of the towers change color depending on who is in control. They're usually blue when not in use, turning red when XANA activates them and green when used by Jeremie. Franz activating them turns them white, which is what we usually see the towers as in seasons 3 and 4. This more or less means Franz Hopper is keeping all the towers from getting taken over passively by XANA through sheer force of will.

      Also, might as well fill in names of the other monsters mentioned. We have Tarantulas which were the first monsters introduced (still preferred Megatanks when it came to high level monsters, but I guess having a more specialized killer compared to the bulky Megatanks is important), the Creepers (God, those things were legit kinda scary) were the monsters in Sector 5, and finally the Mantas (three guesses as to which monster this one was and the first two don't count). Then of course there's the Scyphozoa you mentioned, which not gonna lie was a pretty intimidating threat to our heroes...
      These would be the last monsters introduced in Lyoko itself with the exception of one other monster introduced in Season 4, but we'll get to that when we get there.

    While XANA's sudden disaster of the week popping up again seems strange, it is logical.
    XANA is going through character development.
    He started the series with disaster of the week. Metawise, it's an easy way for people to get into it. But that was a young XANA, even with as powerful as he was, still learning, testing his limits.
    Then in season two, he begins planning long term. He has a goal, get Aelita's memory. We see him trying to lure them into traps to get to her, willing to work with them as long as needed when they're all in danger. And he also begins learning about them psychologically. He tears into the kids' relations, turning them against one another to be easier to manipulate.
    And then there's the return to the past. That makes XANA stronger. The kids did it all the time in season one, but now they have to save it for real emergencies, not just for convenience's sake. XANA is unable to get much stronger as a result. But notice once he starts going back to the disaster of the week formula, he is able to make them extreme enough to force the kids to return to the past. It's win-win for him. Either he gets Aelita, or he becomes stronger.
    XANA is a program, but he is growing, learning how to be a more effective antagonist. That is why he is able to win at the end. He got everything in place after trial and error, by growing stronger, and was able to escape, meaning the surefire way to turn him off will no longer work.
    That is why I wanted all the episodes looked at. Because even those disaster of the week episodes show XANA's long term plan and how subtle it is. This show isn't just a case of the heroes needing to grow stronger to confront their foe, but their foe developing and becoming stronger to overcome them. He's not just sitting in place waiting for them. He is learning and making plans.

      That episode (Chips are down) is one of the episodes I hate the most in the entire history of Code Lyoko and what makes it worse is the "dramatic irony" when Ulrich did a Time Reversion for Yumi's sake and Jeremy in turn used it for his own benefit and didn't get punished for it, even though he deserved to hear his share of the credit for it and Ulrich didn't and it's so truly infuriating and unfair, both for the characters and for the feelings of us viewers that I so badly want to strangle Laurent Turner and Sophie Decroisette for writing such a horrible and miserable episode and on top of that Ulrich was ultimately so shamelessly childish, selfish and stupid to go and donate all the money when he could have kept at least some of it for himself and maybe also use some of it for the benefit of his group, either for their personal expenses or for the fight against X.A.N.A (with the money they could have bought all kinds of equipment that would have made the job much easier)

    You comment on how short guys are in this show compared to the girls. They are all early adolescents. The girls have already hit a growth spurt or two while the guys are still waiting for biology to catch up. It's a subtle detail that many animated shows overlook in order to stick to the 'guys are physically stronger and girls are more tactical' trope. It is one of the things that I genuinely appreciate about Code Lyoko. Jeremy, a guy, is actually the brains of the group and Yumi, a girl, is the muscle, both in the real world and in Lyoko.

    I think one of my favorite parts of this show is seeing XANA casually go from being this mastermind with super intricate planning to a complete agent of chaos depending on however they feel. I also kind of wish you brought up how Odd might have unintentionally given XANA the idea for the snowstorm episode in the Kidnapping episode by telling the XANA possessed principal "You know, humans can die from extreme cold too." and then the Principal is like "Oh shit, really?"
    Another thing I'd like to mention is that I like to headcanon the Lottery episode is supposed to be after episode where Jeremy gets obsessed with returning to the past. Just gives the discrepancy a little bit of logic to me. This is the kind of show where you can play around with the canon order if the episode doesn't break status quo. It's kind of why I like a lot of the episodes that don't have too much actually going on story wise. You can just see these poor kids just be kids and deal with mundane issues for once instead of risk their lives.
    I don't remember if it's stated in the episode, but I think the reason why Jeremy tries to activate a tower in the second to last episode is because it's a way for him to concentrate more machine resources in the decoding since he's made such slow progress.

    • @Colby2D
      @Colby2D  3 месяца назад +4

    A lot of XANA's plans make total sense is that it too is a "child"
    Yes, its an incredibly powerull and intelligent, sentient AI.
    But , while it too learns and adapts alongside the Lyoko gang its is also *viciously* petty and cruel.
    It using its resources to sow distrust and make the characters' lives worse because they keep ruining their plans instead of just attacking them in their sleep makes total sense.
    Hell, even in season 1 you could see the gradual shift of Xana going from more large scale plans to gunning for the Lyoko gang and their school *specifically*
    It makes this otherwise faceless threat have a suprising amount of character once you look at it from that angle.

    Season 2 is possibly my favorite. The emotional highs and lows were well done. The ending took my breath away (though it was also because i thought it was the final season at the time, but that was on me). A few of my personal favorites:
    Sissi being made more than just the typical mean girl as she's given more focus and I felt they used her screentime wisely. I was surprised when the zombies episode debuted and she willingly stepped close to Milly telling them to stay away from her.
    Two moments with Ulrich and Yumi stand out. When they are trapped in the boiler room, he is the gentleman not peeking. And when he stayed by her side during the blizzard, I choked up a little when he said he needs her.
    I liked it when XANA's monsters were drawn in 2D, that took me by surprise. And Aelita being sent to the hospital and turning off the supercomputer are dark, but the latter fits with her character.
    Though my favorite by far is Episode 42 "A Fine Mess", the one where Odd and Yumi switch bodies. It has been years since I last watched the series, but I can quote my favorite scene close to verbatim.
    Yumi : "You mean I have to spend the night in a guy's body?"
    Jeremy: "I'm not going to get any sleep at all, you know."
    Odd: "What do you mean? I've got a dynamite body. Better than yours. For instance, there's something itching in the small of my back. I think it's the strap to your..." *goes silent*
    *whimsical sound effect*
    Yumi: "DON'T YOU DARE TAKE THAT OFF, YOU HEAR!"
    I said outloud, " Yeah, they couldn't do this in American cartoons." Then had a long laugh and continued with the episode.
    As always, keep up the good work and have a good day (or night).

    Season two is where I really fell in love with this show. The characters felt a bit more real leading to more fighting that is understandable and yet also very dramatic. The stuff with the creator is both always so interesting (this is legit my gravity falls in that way) and the ways the heroes and XANA grow is intriguing in terms of their abilities. And then we have Aleita who became my favorite character this season. I have such a soft spot for the kind polite, fish out of water characters. And that plus the stuff with her father and Jermey (I ship them so hard) made her so likable this season. Overall I think arguably this season is the high point but I do think 3 + 4 are great! As for Sissy she is a character I liked more rewatching the show. Back in 2020 I had a lot of free time outside online classes so I binged this show entirely. I don’t know why, but I would love to see Sissi in an Artemis style outfit, using her bow and arrows for some sniping. It would also tie into the motif of Odd having laser arrows, or rather crossbow bolts shot from his wrists. Given Ulrich and Yumi’s Japanese motif of Sword and Fan, having two arrow similarities would work for them too.
      Plus, since Sissi would be a team member, Odd and Sissi would have a nice dynamic as a couple and Ulrich wouldn’t have to deal with her trying to get him to date her.

    Hi I'm a French history nerd so i think i can "explain" a bit about the punic war thing. For a French student the punic wars is often considered among the "cool" conflit of the Antiquity that is very very famous on par with Caesar conquest of Gaul. I dont think there heavy symbolism especially considering how norse mythology is used in later season as a same "nerd-drop". If any i think it's just random bits to make the kid watching the show more curious about other things, French creators love to flex their culture and nerd-ness and also as Code Lyoko was funded by french public funds it can be branded "educational" more easily I guess.
    EDIT: Same bits apply to Go, and Silat. We love take care of details and especially the Code Lyoko creators.
    For the branding thing yeah it doesn't shock me, there is some rules but parody is very sacred in France and using another IP in a quoted way is very much allowed. I think it's generally more free because suing into oblivion is less an national sport than in the US.

    Now imagine if Sissy was a lyoko warrior - learning of the plight of aelita, the evil of X.A.N.A , and the burden the gang has to deal with balancing saving the world and being normal kids.
    I feel like she would grow leaps and bounds and keep the attitude she has during all the X.A.N.A attacks.
    Edit: ok yeah, that last part makes it abundantly clear that while she would be a good lyoko warrior she would squeal as soon as things go over the edge.
    Maybe having Jim and sissy join would balance it out but, seems like an unnecessary risk for little to no reward.

    45:00 my understanding of this is that Lyoko is a sort of operating system almost; it allows the user(s) to interface with the supercomputer, and the towers represent different CPU cores within the physical computer part (or CPU groups or whatever). activating a tower allows the user to access a much more significant chunk of the supercomputer's processing power, but a security issue also allows bad actors/viruses (aka xana) to sneak out the metaphorical backdoor and access the broader network beyond the local access it has without any active towers.

    Season 2 was simply amazing and it really ramped things up to 11 with the plot and as I mentioned in your season 1 video, this was the season that got me hooked and made me acknowledge that I heavily misjudged the show during it's first season and that from there on it (as it was airing on Cartoon Network), that I would be sticking with it. It's hard to pick a favorite episode because there are so many good ones but I agree that the episode where Aelita literally was dying and had to keep being revived blew 14/15 year old me seeing a show aimed at children go that far, it was incredible and much appreciated that they took the chance to do this. I also liked the episode where Yumi's parents were considering moving back to Japan because of how hard it was for her father to find work, it was just so painfully relatable. The scene where her mother and father argue over their job searches, just man, relatable. And it also was a nice character moment for Yumi showing why family is so important to her because of the hardships that her's can have like. Like in the Picture day episode, we learn that her parents don't seem to have the best communication with each other, it's just something lol.
    Also yeah, it was totally weird when they'd reference real life media properties like Spider Man or an actor like Bruce Willis, it kinda breaks the immersion a bit tbh but thankfully they didn't do it too much so it was easy to ignore lol.
    Also Odd and Sissi meeting on a dating website, that is just all kinds of messed up in the sense that I remember dating websites back in the day and you had to be at least 18 to use them so it's crazy how they put in a plot like that in a kids show when they're like 13, like what? lmao.
    And the episode where Xana brings in a fake Franz Hopper and the gang turns on Jeremy, I remember really not liking this episode at all when it aired but iupon multiple re-watches, I've come to appreciate it because at the end of the day they are all still kids and it's understandable why their emotions may get the better of them which the show has shown plenty of times and it's forgivable because again, they're kids. So pretty much agree with your sentiment here.
    But finally, that season 2 finale man. I had mad chills and intense feeling during the whole episode up to the climax and the writers gave us viewers a curve ball that Xana, the big bad actually won, it got what it wanted. The ending scene where the gang is in the room and reassuring that they all will be there together to fight and not abandon Aelita still gives me chills every time I re-watch the show, that's when you know it's such a strong episode haha.
    Also on Sissi, I think she's annoying but I think she's a good character because it makes sense why she is obnoxious and entitled because her father spoiled her but her also showing acts of kindness can also be attributed to her upbringing because while her father spoiled her, he's not a bad man and does try to keep the students safe in line (even if it can be seen as neglible to us the viewers as we follow the Lyoko warriors lol). So her being nuanced like this totally makes sense for her character.

    • @Colby2D
      @Colby2D  2 месяца назад +1

      Definitely a lot of good points! The sissi and odd ship is really funny, I know they never really push any romance in the show, but I do like the notion that they’re really compatible, and we know from the prequel odd finds her attractive at least. That would be the only thing I’d like to see more in the future is more connected plots and relationships episode to episode, that would even make a character like Sissi a lot more complex. But yeah the dating app part was weird especially because they’re teens, I chalk it up to being right around the big boom of the internet and stuff and the exploitation on apps and stuff probably wasn’t even considered, that, or they’re just pretending the characters are adults like how Yumi and ulrich always argue like an old married couple

    • @decadentgamer3108
      @decadentgamer3108 2 месяца назад

      @@Colby2D Yeah I think Odd and Sisi could've worked as a couple but I won't lie, I also like the confirmation of Odd being bisexual and if the show was more progressive, they would've had him explore it but that's thinking way too ahead.
      I agree though it would've been nice if there were more connected plots than what we got (which was still nice don't get me wrong).
      And yeah, I remember early 2000s websites was pretty wild and it's believable that someone like Odd and even Sissi would use it when they shouldn't have lol.

    24:48 So there is a reason for this... or rather was a reason for this. During season 1, everytime aelita used her digital powers (called Creativity) she would lose half of her current life point count as recoil. This made using her abilities risky as going from 100 to 50 life points like that would put her in danger agaisnt some of the harder hitting monsters.
    In season 2 however the series bible was changed and so was the mechanics to creativity. It no longer cut her life points and also xana wanted her alive for her memory, which makes her hesitence to use them even more confusing.

    44:31 That's so true. It feels like we got blue-balled with Franz. And this was actually the closest we ever got to seeing him in the real world so it just seems like a big missed opportunity.
    There's a tried & tested formula for characters like this. They get teased a bunch of times, then they appear in person and it's a big deal and then they stick around for the final chunk of the story, helping the heroes defeat the big bad. That's what happened in shows like Gravity Falls or Trollhunters.
    And I think that's what they should've done here. I think Hopper should've been rescued and brought back to the real world around 10 episodes before the series finale and gotten loads of juicy interactions with the Lyoko Warriors. But especially Aelita & Jeremy.
    Alas, that doesn't happen. And the Project Carthage lore also becomes irrelevant after Season 2.

      Teasing Franz here was cool, but I just didn’t care because no one else cared, like that feels like one of the main components for the story after season 2 and it happened like it didn’t even matter,

      I’m sure the French dub is better, but I really like the English cast. Jeremy kinda reminds me of bentley from sly cooper, like kind of a parody, but I do think it’s really interesting his voice actress voices both Jeremy and Aelita

    I still go back and fourth between whether season 2 or 3 is the best season of the show. The writing was so solid in the middle chunk and all the characters got developed so well and in a realistic way. Though I’ll say the third is my favorite because Aelita actually got an offensive power.

    Honestly the scene that always stuck with me as a kid was after the anti virus/black ooze was defeated XANA had the Lyoko Warriors in a compromising spot but instead of attacking the monsters just nod and walk off. I know its just the kids show status quo thing, but gives me "professionals have standards" vibe. Like XANA may be a homicidal computer program but he/she/it isn't without a bit of honor

      For sure, there’s that part, or xana giving the blanket to Yumi and odd when they were freezing in the hostage negotiation, and I was also thinking whether the creatures in lyoko had more free will at all or if they were more just xana controlled 1 to 1

    If I had a nickle for every show that was purely episodic in season one to then change to be story-driven and heavy on continuity in season 2.... Well that would be a ton of nickels

    • @Colby2D
      @Colby2D  3 месяца назад +1

      It would be haha, definitely a lot of requests to do this from networks like “hey if you want to tell a story, fine, but we need episodes for reruns first”

    Spoilers, but to answer the question about the Carthage references, Lyoko was originally a secret cold war communications project ran by the Swiss government called Project Carthage. A reference to the smaller Carthage going up against the bigger and badder Roman (Soviet) empire. The passwords being similar to that makes sense.

    The reason if I recall that Aelita doesn't use Creativity more is because it costs 50 hp to use so its a one time use skill. Writers probably write with that in mind or something.
    I may be Mandela effect remembering if it was mentioned in the show since the wiki said that the line mentioning it got cut.

    XANAs behaviors and logical faults, mistakes and monster design makes a loot more sense when you read the novels. They might not be fully canon, but it is clear the authors had a similar idea in mind of how XANA as an AI was trained.

      @Colby2D I actually liked them way more than I was expecting to, but yeah I'd say it's best to read them after you're finished with season 4. c:

    Not sure if you're planning on covering the third season (I hope so at some point) but I feel like the two prequel episodes are worth keeping a mental note of as you go into the finale of season 3, just to keep in mind how the group acted as they were learning the ropes then, and how unfair they honestly were to a certain someone going into the finale.

    I think that Odd is the second most powerful warrior right behind Althea , odd has flexibility and acrobatics of both Ulrich and Yumi plus he’s ability to see into the future .

    • @Colby2D
      @Colby2D  2 месяца назад +1

      I think you could argue he’s the most powerful just because so many situations find aelita trapped in a 1v1 she does nothing in, like with the scyphozoa, where we’ve seen odd take it out
