Even though I'm a bigger fan of Bruce Timm DCAU shows , I still appreciate The Batman for what it was and enjoyed it for how it reworked & tried out different/new things while still being faithful to the essence/spirit of the source material. But what I mostly enjoyed was the earlier seasons of the show & the dynamic of a rookie Batman with Detective Ethan & Yin. I wished they did more between these original characters because they really had something special & just like how BTAS success made Harley Quinn part of Batman's rogue gallery, I think both Ethan (before his transformation as CF) & Detective Yin as Batman allies in GPD could have become an interesting part of the Batman continuity. With them being the ones involved (with Commissioner Gordon assistance in later seasons) in changing GPD & removing the corruption from the inside because of Gotham's crime families influence. Like part of the reason Bruce became Batman was to help Gotham's people fight against the corruption that has taken hold of the city.
It's worth mentioning part of the reason Ethan was made Clayface is because due to the Dark Knight Trilogy having the rights to certain villains, they weren't allowed to be used in the show, hence the reason we never see Scarecrow, Two-Face, or Ra's Al Ghul, thus they gave Ethan/Clayface a similar backstory to Two Face as a compromise. Joker was the one exception since it's basically impossible to do a batman show without the joker.
D.A.V.E. talking about how it figured Batman's identity "[Whole breakdown w/ public knowledge, statistics, and emotional motivation]... IT WAS OBVIOUS", I loved the condescension in both the voice-acting and even inflection in it's face (somehow).
Only villain who figured it out in THIS show. An oft overlooked fact about Bane was that in his debut story, he not only broke the bat, but did so by deducing Batman's identity and sending pawns forward to weaken the bat for the coup de grace.

I do agree with Vee Infuso that he should've stayed more distinct from the other Jokers, as his early design was honestly pretty great. This was my first introduction to Batman as a kid and was what got me into Batman growing up, even before I ever watched Batman The Animated Series or Batman: Brave and the Bold in my teen years. This show was my first introduction to Batman as a kid, and honestly, it's my favourite Batman show, and its hard to believe the show is already 20 years old. I absolutely LOVE the animation, art style and redesigns of the characters, especially Joker (one of my favourite takes on Joker), Batman, Batgirl, Robin, Mr Freeze, Firefly, Catwoman, Riddler, Killer Croc, Clayface, Man-Bat, etc... all of them had such cool, sleek and creative designs that truly made this show stand out as its own thing and that's one of the many reasons I love it so much. I really love this shows take on Batman as more laid back and mentally stable Batman that hasn't let the darkness completely overtake him as its such a refreshing change from the status quo. I also love Bruce and Alfred's relationship and how much Bruce grows as a character accepting Batgirl and adopting Robin and rheir dynamic together is truly fun to watch as this might be my favourite take on the Bat-Family in an adaptation as they all had great chemistry with each other.
One of my favorite episodes of this show is the City Council one. His playboy reputation and crime fighting directly interfere with his philanthropy, and it shows a side of Bruce (especially young Bruce) that often gets overlooked. This show in general did a great job exploring Bruce, and made it more of a focus than a lot of the other animated versions.
VAMPIRE! Very cool of you to tackle this show that I just watched months ago which holds up for me after all these years & yeah it's one of the greatest for being a new take by the same people that did Jackie Chan Adventures alongside giving me my favorite iterations of Riddler & Penguin alongside introducing me to Firefly who was a cool one off & glad he returned when he reluctantly teamed up with Mr. Freeze, really glad that this alongside Teen Titans showed you don't have to be part of the DCAU & still be considered great
Bruh the clayface best friends them boys was cooking this how u do reimagining and still play respect to the franchise this is my favorite version of Bruce and I agree with kamen this series does fantastic job with bruce
the cooked with the start of the arc, but the second part just threw me off completely they didn’t have Batman looking around for Clayface in some arcs, and by the time he found him in that episode, Clayface gets pardoned and get his life back, only to turn evil again. they dropped that arc down a drain and it deserved better.
I definitely feel like Batman and Spiderman exist on opposite sides of the same coin. The big difference is that Batman has confidence, and was directly involved with his trauma, while Spiderman keeps his mouth running due to a lack of confidence, and wasn't there for his loss, and I think that's a huge difference maker in their characters.
Hot take, this is literally one of my FAVORITE freeze backstories. Bank robber who was in a horrible accident, then savvied the fuck up, hell, even leveled up his gambit, motivated and stronger for it.
That scene from the movie of Joker taking in all the blood as it rains on him is so creepy I love it, would love to see you review the movie for Halloween. vampire.
Actually what you said about, Freeze may have been the intent at some point. Looking back at the flashback where he was in a car chase, you can see a photo strip of him and some woman most likely the series version of Nora. I can only assume the idea was dropped since it's never brought up in any episode featuring him.
It was likely homage to the BTAS storyline; in the behind the scenes, they do explain their thought process behind their Mr. Freeze, and they describe it as "we didn't want to copy BTAS so we'll do our own thing," so it was more, so they wanted to be original.
I can see it but personally I feel like the homage may have been a leftover from an early draft of the episode. Like I can understand them wanting to do an original version of the character but I can also see during the early days of production they were just gonna do another take on btas freeze before changing their minds. The photo strip being the last demands of that idea they didn't bother taking out. I agree with what you said but I just don't think they'd use the photo strip as a homage due to how much it implies in the show.
22:52 They could have used her as a reimagining of the character Cassandra Cain as they did with Ethan being Clayface and made her a part of the bat family
7:48 it’s because Batman was intelligent with psychoanalysis. He was getting under their skin. He was a tactician with emotional manipulation and it was gorgeous
The Batman is one of my favorite takes on year one Batman. It struggled a lot with its competing shows especially because DC had a rule at the time that they didnt want more than one show running that featured the same character in a major role. Because of that rule we got a unique take on Batgirl because at the time the show runners were not allowed to introduce robin because robin was being used in Teen Titans. Similarly until Justice League wrapped up the show runners were not allowed to introduce supporting super heros until its later seasons. Its in these limitations it made some great creative choices but also limited some storys.
Oh I loved this version of the Batman growing up as a kid. Sure it wasn't as deep as TAS but it still was a lot of fun, had some awesome style and some of the redesigns were actually kind of neat, Riddler voiced by Freddy Kruger, a Joker who knows Kung Fu, Clayface is an older friend of Bruce's we see turn evil gradually over time, Ellen Yin being a pretty awesome secondary character and he fights Dracula. This show was aces in my book.
Been notcing more of The Batman videos on my feed latley. Brought back good memoires. Batman vs Dracula will always be one of my favorite batman films.
I can see why you'd like it - It's a classic for a reason. Be sure to keep an eye out for Batman VS Dracula on this channel the day before Halloween :)
Awesome! Another video talking about The Batman! Loved this adaptation of his early days and eventual connection to the Justice League. Glad to see more videos talking about it.
While I did grow up watching Justice League, this was the Batman Solo-series of my childhood. It's a little depressing that a cartoon from 20 years ago has better animation and fight choreography than a lot of what comes out today.
I really loved The Batman. While it didn't have the fame that Batman TAS had, some characters and plotlines I thought were handled significantly better than in BTAS. Characters like Catwoman, Hugo Strange, Penguin, Batgirl, Killer Croc and surprisingly Firefly I thought were handled in a vastly superior way than in the DCAU. Also the Riddler voiced by Robert Englund was a standout. It also had one of the most unique depictions of Clayface ever.
The Batman was my introduction to Batman as a kid! Even now every so often I re-binge the series because I love it so much! I actually remember being turned off by Joker's more neat design in other series for a while when I saw him in other cartoons because I was so used to how he looks in The Batman XD Also the intro will forever live rent-free in my head! It's such a good theme! This show also has my favourite Killer croc design.
Ngl this series has like all of my favorite batman designs and overall is just my favorite series. Kevin Michael Richardsons joker especially is amazing for me.
The Batman, TAS, with The Brave and The Bold are the best-animated interactions of Batman. They all show unique takes on the mythos while staying true to what made the series stand out in the first place. In other words, I'm happy I grew up watching all three of them.
i love this one, it has my favorite version of the joker, both in voice and design(well, BEFORE they put him in the purple suit), the only thing i didn't like was mr freeze's story, they made him a dimexa dozen thief that ended up with powers, but i liked his design, the voice for batman is really good also, he could be a replacement for Kevin Conroy
That intro was UNHINGED XD. I can’t really say I like many of this show’s specific versions of Batman villains but I did like some created for the show, such as Rumor, Ragdoll, and Wrath/Scorn, tho sadly underutilized. I cannot say I really like this show, it’s decent, and there’s some storylines that are engaging. But rather than rewatching the entire show I would only rewatch certain episodes I thought were great.
Hot take but my favorite villain from this show was Tremblar. I love that they made up a villain who could make his own earthquakes but it’s a real shame that he was only in one episode! I love him so much. I also liked Gearhead. Same voice actor as Batman Beyond! I definitely wish those two villains were used more! This show is way underrated! Thank you for doing this tribute!
Man, you made my day today, i am surprised your brought up this series but honestly its the Batman series i grew up so its has a lot of good memories. Glad to see someone else talk about it. Best of luck in the future and have a good day.
This was my childhood Batman show. I love how this one was more combat heavy, especially with villains like Joker and Penguin. This also has my favorite version of Joker, design and all. The story of Ethan/Clayface, amazing stuff. And detective Yin. Hooooh Detective Yin.
Glad to see people talk about this show. I absolutely loved this show growing up. The artsyle, the designs, the action, pretty much everything. I especially loved to see Bruce crack jokes, both in and out of costume. I think that's something that a few iterations of the character do wrong. They make Bruce this stoic no-nonsense figure when even in BTAS, Bruce had a sense of humor.
Vampire! This is the show I actually grew up as a kid. While I did manage to watch BTAS later I still like this show a lot. I actually loved a lot of the interpretations of the villains. It's nice to hear someone else enjoy the shoe while acknowledging it's flaws. Great video Kamen!
I think one of the more underrated parts of this show is how they call Batman "The Batman". It gives the impression that this Batman is seen more like some kind of crime stopping entity rather than just a person
This is my favorite Batman show, loved the futuristic stuff. I like all of the Batman’s (except the obvious stuff) but I love this one. Especially the penguin in this one.
I remember liking it well enough when it was airing (I'm old enough to remember Kids WB, oh my God...). I love alternate takes on stuff like this, and real talk? We need more of it.
I never watched this series but I watched a few videos on it and what the studio made them do to this iteration of the joker is criminal. Making it more in line with a regular joker even though kungfu clown is such a cool idea.
Batman versus Vampires? I seem to recall something to that effect in Batman Beyond, a show I really adored as a kid. Beyond's Batman is a great foil to TAS's Batman. So is Beyond's Bruce to his former selfe, loved it
I have vague memories of this show and I don’t remember watching it much as a kid. I can’t recall why, it could have been the art style but again I can’t remember. Now that I see it now I really wish I watched it, it’s so unique from the rest. The the thing I like the most is the characters look awesome, it’s like all his villains where mutated or reborn as humanoid monsters, striping away what human traits they had and there villains traits took there place.
Good to see you upload mate, I just started binging BTAS again so i was really curious about this video and I've always been curious about the The Batman (2004) but damn i'll have to wait if there's gonna be spoilers, left a like though :)
I always found the theme songs going from being this electronic, serious mood piece in the early seasons to set a more serious tone as Bruce face off against the strange foes for the first time. To a bouncy remix of the Adam West series' theme with the introduction of Robin and Bat Girl in his mission as a neat detail.
Earlier seasons had one of the best fighting scenes ive ever seen in a cartoon. The way different villians fight and the choreography was top notch. A shame there wasnt much of them later on, its what made this show unique to me, excluding the characters of course.
I remember this, a lot of people actively avoided it because of the dramatic changes to the character design. It just reaked of "To Sell Toys!" to fans, it didn't help that a lot of the character changes are questionable, like Joker seemingly slowly mutating into a hyena or Riddler looking like a heroin addict. Still the only thing I've actually seen of the show is the Vs. Dracula movie which is set in this continuity, thrown it on as a "I wanna watch something Halloweenie, but not in the mood for a straight up horror." and.. it's a pretty good time.
If you enjoyed the video, please consider leaving a like and commenting below :)

Grew up with this. Glad you’re reviewing it.
Oh yeah, need the Halloween special VAMPIRE BOYYYYYYS
“The Batman” Was my favorite version of Batman. I love it more then any version of Batman
Freeze, really glad that this alongside Teen Titans showed you don't have to be part of the DCAU & still be considered great
Bruh the clayface best friends them boys was cooking this how u do reimagining and still play respect to the franchise this is my favorite version of Bruce and I agree with kamen this series does fantastic job with bruce
the cooked with the start of the arc, but the second part just threw me off completely
they didn’t have Batman looking around for Clayface in some arcs, and by the time he found him in that episode, Clayface gets pardoned and get his life back, only to turn evil again.
they dropped that arc down a drain and it deserved better.
That scene from the movie of Joker taking in all the blood as it rains on him is so creepy I love it, would love to see you review the movie for Halloween. vampire.
And of course he cracks a joke about the situation "you're the second bat man I seen tonight, and you're both pains in the neck"
Next up, ‘Why Batman: The Brave and the Bold was stronger, smarter, better… *IT WAS BETTER!’*
Dude was peak batman in brave and the bold.
Homelander: IS this one of my people?
It was LESSER
@@bthsr7113 THAT'S WHAT IM SAYING
Definitely underrated
The Batman vs Dracula being covered on this channel would be so good! Vampire, baby!
I grew up with BTAS, but was far more fascinated with The Batman. The animation & Halloween vibes were just on point. Seriously, that cape...🤤
That would’ve been great. She was my favorite other character on the show. 😊😅
Its in these limitations it made some great creative choices but also limited some storys.
vampire
the batman vs Dracula was a big part of my childhood, it was glorious
One of my favorite shows to watch after school. Wow 20 years ago I was in the 5th grade.
Most metal Batman cartoon ever. Shout out to boomerang for introducing me to this banger
Honestly this one was my favorite batman show
The is my second favorite iteration of the Batman mythos! I’m so glad this show is getting the recognition it deserves! VAMPIRE
Vampire
The Batman vs Dracula is criminally underrated!
Vampire!
Great video! This version of Batman is very near and dear to my heart, so I appreciate your thorough analysis!
I grew up with this, some of BTAS, Batman Beyond, the Brave and the Bokd and Beware the Batman
Man some Batman shows be cooking
Awesome! Another video talking about The Batman! Loved this adaptation of his early days and eventual connection to the Justice League. Glad to see more videos talking about it.
Personally my favorite Solo Batman animated series
Agreed
vampire! really sweet analysis. this was a pretty lovely animated series from my childhood. always loved the designs.
While I did grow up watching Justice League, this was the Batman Solo-series of my childhood.
It's a little depressing that a cartoon from 20 years ago has better animation and fight choreography than a lot of what comes out today.
This was the batman that i grew up with. Great to see it talked about. I hope you talk about the brave and the bold next.
19:45 finally somebody recognizes this movie
I actually remember being turned off by Joker's more neat design in other series for a while when I saw him in other cartoons because I was so used to how he looks in The Batman XD
Also the intro will forever live rent-free in my head! It's such a good theme!
This show also has my favourite Killer croc design.
Ngl this series has like all of my favorite batman designs and overall is just my favorite series. Kevin Michael Richardsons joker especially is amazing for me.
Frank Gorshin's performance as Dr. Strange is a highlight of the series for me
now shits getting real,
this was MY Batman back then, i LOVED this show!
Don’t forget Tom also voiced the mayor of Townsville lol
along with Edurdo in foster home for imaginary friends, Peepers in wander over yander, and Chuck in Kid cosmic.
Ironically, that's exactly how Freeza started out before the animated series changed him into a tragic figure.
I watched like all of the shows 😭 I love and miss the old gritty shows from my childhood 😭
I loved that Dracula special! The bloodbank scene was so terrifying yet enthralling for childhood me
I'm so happy to see someone speaking about it, it was a nice introduction for me to Batman
I hope this show gets the praise it deserves on a larger scale at some point. It was a really fun reimagining of all the characters!
This one felt like at first it respected how much Bruce did as Bruce as much as batman.
Edit:Vampire!
2004 The Batman was what got me into DC and specifically Batman. My dad bought the dvds for my brothers and I.
The Batman is hands down my favorite batman cartoon, and it's nice to see one of my favorite RUclipsrs talk about it.
This was my childhood Batman show. I love how this one was more combat heavy, especially with villains like Joker and Penguin. This also has my favorite version of Joker, design and all. The story of Ethan/Clayface, amazing stuff. And detective Yin. Hooooh Detective Yin.
This is my favorite version of Batman and what my version of Batman is like in my own DC Universe
this one is really gorgeous art style and animation I'm not a huge fan of this but I do admit it felt different, and it was impressive to watch
Good job on covering this underrated series. Also... Vampire!
This was my literal childhood and first ever introduction to Batman and I’m happy that it’s getting the recognition it deserves-slowly but surely.
The Batman is how you do a reimagining, change just enough to make it different, but not enough to make it unrecognisable as a Batman series.
*My* GOAT Batman.
“Hell give me a liveaction version of Batman duking it out with Dracula.”
I still waiting for Batman vs Predator.
Love this show, along with Jackie and big guy
Had the Batman Vs Dracula dvd as a kid, I’m all for a video on that under appreciated gem!
Vampire!
The show gave a full arc to Batman & even his sidekicks. It deserves the praise. I've always seen Titan Titans connected to this show.
I always found the theme songs going from being this electronic, serious mood piece in the early seasons to set a more serious tone as Bruce face off against the strange foes for the first time. To a bouncy remix of the Adam West series' theme with the introduction of Robin and Bat Girl in his mission as a neat detail.
I honestly like Joker's design in The Batman that I thought this was this go-to look until I found out that he's usually in a full suit.
The intro is amd will always be one of the hardest, coldest openings to an cartoon
