That thought is correct. The bat embargo was really strong at this time. That’s also why some characters didn’t appear at all (Ras Al Ghul, Scarecrow and Harvey Dent/two face) because they appeared in the Nolan movies, therefore couldn’t be used on the first, or second season of the show. Joker could still appear but he showed up less as the show went on.
@@_ChoccooMilkk_honestly I kinda like that they showed us less joker because we got more villains. Besides in season 5, but the more villains meant Batman had to adapt and overcome their abilities which made the show even better in my eyes
From what I remember, the reason they started with Batgirl and not Robin was because Teen Titans was airing at the same time, and the Bat Embargo kept them from using him until TT ended.
Yeah although that consequently along with the presentation of this Robin made way for the theory that both Titans and The Batman's Robin are the same guy only a couple years. And both Titans and Batman 04 are in the same universe.
This was MY Batman growing up. Of course I went back and watched BTAS and loved it but this was my introduction to the caped crusader. Loved your other videos on this show and I'm so glad you're covering this show and bringing more awareness to it. Its so underrated and deserved so much more love than, as you said, being a weird middle child that a lot of people overlooked
3:06 no no no, he’s not just voiced by a black man, he’s voiced by KEVIN MICHAEL RICHARDSON, one of the funniest and most talented VAs ever. he was such a good get for this show
One of the things this show got criticized for was the whole "it's just to sell toys" thing. As someone who grew up with BTAS they're gonna make the toys anyway might as well have them actually connected to the show
The difference is the staff for toys in "The Batman" was actually used in the show and had a role in the plot. I'm not a expert in marketing, but I get a feeling a lot of stuff sold under BTAS brand was either somewhere in the background or wasn't from the show at all.
Honestly, I’m _so_ happy people are finally getting around to talk about The Batman. It feels like it gets overshadowed by Batman: the Animated Series so often, and afterward people just jump on to Brave and the Bold. But þis? Þis was my Batman growing up. Þis was how I got introduced to þe Batman as a character, and it set þe stage for how I saw þese characters going forward. Heck, I almost feel like oþer Jokers act too still and stiff compared to Kevin’s Joker; I even got into acrobatics a little because of Joker, and I incorporate what I do into my role in þe local Haunted Woods to þis day! Þis show may not be þe gold-standard of þe Animated Series, and I can accept þat, but The Batman is a beautiful shining silver!
Þ while usually put at the start of words in icelandic doesn’t actually represent the sound you’re using it for. Ð and ð upper and lower case respectively would be much more suited. This is also how it was in old English Ðæt->That
Im glad a lot of people are making videos on this series. The late 80d-2010s were just the time of Batman from the comics, to 89, to the DCAU, The Batman, Brave and the Bold, Nolan movies and even sadly the DCEU were just Batman taking over. I grew up with this show and I really loved the aesthetic of the show
I loved the batfamily dynamic in this show especially batgirl and with her rivalry with robin. This version of Bruce actually grew a lot in the season and was acting like a sorta father figure to a younger version of the sidekicks. This versions cat woman was also one of my favorites since they really played up how she’s a parallel of Bruce in this show
This was my first introduction to Batman as a kid and was what got me into Batman growing up, even before I ever watched Batman The Animated Series, Batman: Brave and the Bold, before I even read the comics, or played the video games like Arkham series or Telltale games in my teen years. This show honestly is my favourite Batman show, and its hard to believe the show is already 20 years old. I absolutely LOVE the animation, art style and redesigns of the characters, especially Joker (one of my favourite takes on Joker), Batman, Batgirl, Robin, Mr Freeze, Firefly, Catwoman, Riddler, Killer Croc, Clayface, Man-Bat, etc... all of them had such cool, sleek and creative designs that truly made this show stand out as its own thing and that's one of the many reasons I love it so much. I really love this shows take on Batman as more laid back and mentally stable Batman that hasn't let the darkness completely overtake him as its such a refreshing change from the status quo. I also love Bruce and Alfred's relationship and how much Bruce grows as a character accepting Batgirl and adopting Robin and rheir dynamic together is truly fun to watch as this might be my favourite take on the Bat-Family in an adaptation as they all had great chemistry with each other.
Wonder Woman was designed for the series, but she didn't get to appear because of this contract that said if Wonder Woman was gonna appear on any show that wasn't about her, she had to be in a major role. Luckily this was done away with by the time Brave and the Bold came out.
While Teen Titans was why Batgirl was introduced first, it's actually something that was a thing Pre-Crisis in the comics, which is neat. I love this show. Writing Yin out does kind of sucks, the biggest insult probably being an episode where they brought back Cash Tankerson to guard Bruce Wayne. It's really neat how this show got around the Bat-Embargo by making Ethan Bennett the first Clayface via an adaption of The Killing Joke. Also, "The Joining" was an obvious "Brainiac by another name". I know this looks like rambling, but bear with it.
Dr. Strange being a genuine threat while never lifting a finger was also awsome... Like, it makes so much sense that he would be get villains into Arkam instead of prison and let them "escape" to test his theories.
I love how this series developed ideas that were later added into other Batman media. Some examples are… • A Jokerized Batman • Joker getting juiced on Venom • A kid Poison Ivy • An A.I. created to take down Batman • An A.I. Joker • Mr. Freeze having actual ice powers And I know there were more concepts from the show that were translated to other media but I can’t name any other specific examples.
This is my Batman show. I literally have all 5 seasons on DVD. Before watching this show on Cartoon Network, I knew little about Batman or the wider DC universe in general. This show was my introduction to Joker, Batgirl, Robin, Superman, heck the Justice League itself. I'm glad to see channels like yours give the show the praise and attention it deserves. Also peak Batgirl and Robin imao. Their episode introductions in seasons 3 and 4 are some of the best episodes the show ever did. Having Barbara Gordon and Pamela Isley be best friends before becoming Batgirl and Poison Ivy was masterfully done. And Robin's intro episode and how Dick Grayson becomes Batman's partner is tied with the BTAS version. It's that good
I actually thought the show was fairly weak when it started out. But back then, these types of shows actually got to continue and fully flesh out its characters and world and feel “complete” like you said. That started to go away in the 2010s.
I'm late. I LOVE this show, definitely my favorite Batman series. (I have all the dvds, even! :D) I enjoy how the first seasons are darker and how the show lightens up with the introduction of Batgirl and then Robin. Also, love how the first time Batman smiles in the show is for Dick. Batman never smiles, at all, and then he meets Dick Grayson and he smiles. Also, love Alfred. Alfred is the goat. The episode where Ethan Bennet turned into Clayface was terrifying as a kid. Also, it's so sad how Bruce was going to finally open up to Ethan about his secret identity and then it didn't work out. :/ :(
This show, alongside Gotham, is the one were Alfred TRULY FEELS LIKE HE'S BRUCE DAD , not just his butler _& you're doing what?_ *What you suggested Alfred, moving on with with my life* _Well, let's get to work, Shall we?_
I don't feal like B:TAS, Keaton, or Bale ever treated Alfred as "just a Butler" He's basically Batman's closest partner and confidant in all three of those forms, and certainly is a fatherly presence in the lives of both Bale and BTAS Batman
I loved this show so much! Especially how they showed him maturing and becoming a better Batman. I loved Brave and the Bold a ton but I watched that before I watched this. This show is THE Batman show for me.
Same, it sucks when Batgirl is just "the girl" of the group. Honestly, I'm not against 2004 Robin and Batgirl becoming a couple because they're fleshed out characters, but I still love their sibling bond quite a lot and it made them even more memorable.
I love this version so much. Especially with how the Batfamily dynamic is kind of like a big brother and his kid sister and little brother. The fact we see them all together in the future episode with Nightwing and Oracle and older Batman and Elderly Alfred. It really goes to show that they have a really good family bond. It’s perfect for this Batman whose story in the early parts are focused on him being able to balance a life with his heroics. Seeing that he managed to is cathartic when compared to Batman Beyond where it’s so angsty and sad.
Goddawg 20 years ago!!! Man I'm old lol. This show is fire. I love the opening in the first two seasons. Only character I didn't like was Rojas but obviously because he didn't like Batman. Freeze, Firefly, Joker I loved. This show is very rewatchable. Love Bruce's development. Getting Batgirl, Robin, JL characters. 9/10 for me.
I really loved The Batman. While it didn't have the fame that Batman The Animated Series had, some characters and plotlines I thought were handled significantly better than in BTAS. Characters like Catwoman, Hugo Strange, Batgirl, Killer Croc and surprisingly Firefly I thought were handled in a vastly superior way than in the DCAU. Also the Riddler voiced by Robert Englund was a standout. It also had one of the most unique depictions of Clayface ever. The animation was incredibly thought out and the choreography on the fight scenes is the best I've seen in DC animation.
Scarecrow wasn't allowed to show up purely because of the first Nolan film AND him being reserved for a very short cameo in the next. Hated character embargos, though I have heard they weren't always super strict. But in the cases they were it was pretty stupid imo.
Going through middle school this show was all i talked about, i remember drawing the characters from this show during my classes. This was my Saturday morning cartoon era. I would watch the kids wb (later cw for kids) from 8am till noon. I would move a couch chair into the kitchen and watch on our small TV in there. Good times.
everything is so good about this show and the designs for some of the characters are insanely good i honestly think this batman design is my favorite animated one maybe even top 3 in general another thing i also think its cool when the police are against batman like i dont like the idea of the policing trying to lock batman up for doing good but its like batman has to avoid another thing and it builds his character and gives him a lot of respect i know that was kinda off topic but jus wanted to say that but alot of the stuff i wanted to say u said in this video
I love how Rino Romano took some of his voice acting from Spiderman and sprinkled it in a bit in Bruce's personality here. The sharp tongue, The Quips and one liners. I love this Batman he reminds me of Dante from Devil May Cry in a way mostly from the Anime. Perfect contrast of brooding and upbeat. This will always be my favorite version of Batman as he can go Toe-Toe with Joker in dialogue. Laughing Bat will always go down as my personal favorite Batman Episode.
This show was my childhood to be honest. I only really watched this, Justice League + Unlimited, Teen Titans, and Young Justice, with The Batman being the catalyst that made me want to watch all those others. To this day, when I hear Batman this is who I think of. That holds true with all the characters though, I always think of this show's designs first above all else.
Awesome video, Venxous! I have seen clips of "The Batman" and they look cool. I haven't really watched the show though. Nonetheless, your video essay got me interested. I am a fan of the DCAU Batman and have enjoyed Batman comics (and enjoyed the Nolan, Burton, and Reeves Batman films). Your description of Batman in "The Batman" cartoon are cool and I def. want to watch the series 😊. I am also a fan of Ming-Na Wen, so I am excited to see much more of her portrayal of Ellen Yin (beyond the RUclips clips that I've seen). Cool video again. Have a wonderful weekend 😊.
I love that the character design team also designed Jackie Chan Adventures, which you don't notice until it's mentioned, at which point it's really obvious
My favorite part of the whole show is Bruce himself: he seems more chipper and quippier than other variants. Like the guy said, he has an actual life outside of the costume. Plus, his time with Batgirl & Robin is truly touching.
Let’s go let us talk about peak this is my favorite version of Bruce yes even over the animated series it does what most Batman show fail at they don’t neglect Bruce Wayne which I love
This is my fav batman cartoon though I will admit I didn’t grow up with it I watched it for the first time like a couple months ago but I enjoyed it even more than btas and Batman beyond I like the shows take on this version of Batman
Ivy is about 16 (like Barbara) in season 3 and 18 or so in season 5. Makes Lex being a creep toward her only SLIGHTLY less creepy with that context, but it's still weird.
One of the show’s designer actually confirmed that Ivy is 19 and Barbara is 16. Probably another reason why Gordon didn’t trust her around her daughter.
Maxie Zeus did get a one shot feature villain of the week episode of Batman : TAS. They played his delusional slipping on reality more sympathetically.
I agree that Ellen Yin is a new character but her name at least is heavily based on Ellen Yindel the replacement commissioner for Gordon in Batman The Dark Knight Returns. I like what they did with her though, definitely made the character her own.
The only thing I hated about the show was the Flash Forward when they made Bruce just like the Dark Knight Returns Batman. He spent all this time just to end up like he did in the Flash Forward personality wise.
Great show A few changes I think they should have went with the Keaton costume design black with the gold symbol That Batmobile should have looked similar to Batman begins or Keaton’s Batmobile I think they could have did a spin off of the these characters
Ellen Yin is kinda sorta based on commissioner Ellen Yindel from The Dark Knight Returns. They even make Yin the commissioner in the flash-foward episode!
I’m pretty sure Joker’s hair is meant to look like a Jester’s hat. I never see people talk about it though and haven’t looked into what the designers have said about it
I love this show so much, now certain characters didn't appear for stupid reasons (one of them is because they already appeared somewhere else, and DC doesn't want to confuse their viewers, as if their viewers were brainless sheep), and which is one of the reasons why we didn't get Wonder Woman, and there were plans to include her in season five, but they couldn't and they definitely would have included her if they made season six, which was supposed to happen because they had the material but didn't get approval for season six, and I really felt bad when I found out that, but this is still one of my most beloved universes and versions of Batman ever, and it has a special place in my heart.
The one thing I noticed and now praise about 2004 Batman that unlike BTAS Bruce not only has gone through development, but we also see all his stages, even in the far future. Think about it, DCAU needed two whole ass shows to demonstrate Bruce becoming a Justice League member and an old man loner. "The Batman" did the same just in 5 seasons and didn't waste time with pointless fillers or unnecessary multi part stories
I wasn't mad at Mr Freeze's interpretation. If every version since BTAS had the exact same origins for their villains, it would get stale. Granted, every version of Freeze AFTER the show use that origin in a similar way if not exactly the same. This had to stand out from the previous show
I cant watch the whole thing but cause I am literally watching the show for the first time and currently on season 2. I honestly like this version of Bruce Wayne way more than DCAU Bruce Wayne (no not BTAS Bruce, im referring to the new adventure with Batman) he just feels more social and light hearted similar to BTAS IMO
I think the reason “The Batman” started with Batgirl instead of Robin was because at the time “Teen Titans” was still airing during season 3
Correct
@@_ChoccooMilkk_honestly I kinda like that they showed us less joker because we got more villains. Besides in season 5, but the more villains meant Batman had to adapt and overcome their abilities which made the show even better in my eyes
Yup that's the case because WB thought kids were dumb and would confuse the shows and movies
Once again, an attempt at making thing less confusing for the general populous making things even more confusing.

I loved this show so much! Especially how they showed him maturing and becoming a better Batman. I loved Brave and the Bold a ton but I watched that before I watched this. This show is THE Batman show for me.
I like that they gave Batgirl and Robin more of a sibling dynamic rather than being former lovers.
Same, it sucks when Batgirl is just "the girl" of the group. Honestly, I'm not against 2004 Robin and Batgirl becoming a couple because they're fleshed out characters, but I still love their sibling bond quite a lot and it made them even more memorable.
Which is why I feel like Robin/Nightwing and Starfire made for each other, I do not care what anyone would say.
Underrated classic
I'd add "underrated masterpiece".
They weren't allowed to use Robin at first because of Teen Titans. It was only when that series ended that they were given permission to use him.
Beautiful recap my guy. I believe I watched this on WBkids on Saturday mornings.
Love seeing this show get more attention! It’s the one I grew up on so it’ll always have a special place in my heart :3

Ah yes, the show with my favorite batman villain: D.A.V.E.
Just got done watching this, I really thought this was made by someone who has at least 100k subs, wonderful content will be subscribing
I really loved The Batman. While it didn't have the fame that Batman The Animated Series had, some characters and plotlines I thought were handled significantly better than in BTAS. I love when people shed light to this show. It’s so underrated
This was always my second favorite Batman show that did its own thing and felt like a complete satisfying story
Man we had it good back then
This show had a descent ending unlike the 90s! Still up for a reboot!
Bring show back with two face and scarecrow and others!
Scarecrow wasn't allowed to show up purely because of the first Nolan film AND him being reserved for a very short cameo in the next.
Hated character embargos, though I have heard they weren't always super strict. But in the cases they were it was pretty stupid imo.

The moment he talks about poision Ivy, i get an ad about houseplants
Personal Opinion: Best Batgirl
Agree!
Amen!
Here here!

love it when you upload, keep it up
Almost all the villains in this show are skilled fighters even penguin.
Prety nice take on Batman. Maxie Zeus has an appearence on the 90's Batman animated series too.
I am nearly the same age as this show and it’s my personal favorite animated Batman show it hold a special place in my heart
I watched the show as it aired, and loved it, still do!
26:58 The only thing that drives me crazy watching this show is that damn noir guitar riff that gets played 15 to 20 times an episode
This show was my childhood to be honest. I only really watched this, Justice League + Unlimited, Teen Titans, and Young Justice, with The Batman being the catalyst that made me want to watch all those others. This show was fantastic growing up, one of the most unique versions of Joker

Used to love this show as a kid, always had a faint memory of it in the back of my mind
Really is a great show , alotta fond memories of waking up early Saturday mornings and eating tacos watching this show & spiderman
"The Batman" is criminally underrated.
I love The Batman, it's my second favorite Batman show after BTAS, I'm glad I bought it on blue ray.
Good lord, 5 seasons in 4 years?! At 13 episodes a piece? We were spoiled!!!!!
Venxous, can you someday cover the characters from the DCAU like the Justice League? or Batman: the Brave and the Bold? PLEASE?
Best joker penguins firefly
This is my fav batman cartoon though I will admit I didn’t grow up with it I watched it for the first time like a couple months ago but I enjoyed it even more than btas and Batman beyond I like the shows take on this version of Batman
Born in 1997. Watched both growing up. The Batman is good, but BTAS is peak.

Ah, so she's 21 in season 5, then.
Batman beyond series was good as well
This, in my opinion, is the second best Batman cartoon after Batman TAS.
Maxie Zeus did get a one shot feature villain of the week episode of Batman : TAS. They played his delusional slipping on reality more sympathetically.
Watched this when I was 8 still Stan that Riddler e-boy design 💅
I agree that Ellen Yin is a new character but her name at least is heavily based on Ellen Yindel the replacement commissioner for Gordon in Batman The Dark Knight Returns.
I like what they did with her though, definitely made the character her own.
I mostly remember Rag Doll and Dave from this series.
The only thing I hated about the show was the Flash Forward when they made Bruce just like the Dark Knight Returns Batman. He spent all this time just to end up like he did in the Flash Forward personality wise.
That was a possible future.
While it did have a similar look, he DID still have a good relationship with Nightwing and Batgirl/Oracle.
Great show
A few changes
I think they should have went with the Keaton costume design black with the gold symbol
That Batmobile should have looked similar to Batman begins or Keaton’s Batmobile
I think they could have did a spin off of the these characters
The Batman is a great show, but no one ever talks about Beware the Batman...
Yeah, that show is genuinely underrated.
They went with batgirl first because if the embargo. They didn't want to confuse anyone since robin was also on the teen titans
This show my favorite Riddler, and Catwoman . I love action of this show art style , the black mask episode is my favorite
It's been 20 years but it feels like just yesterday (*-* )
Wonder Woman and Aquaman weren’t shown due to respective embargoes. There was a design for her character that was New Frontier inspired
One thing that I didn't like was writing Yin out.
😮Hey I said the same thing that joker got dreads lol 😂man!!!!!lol bro lol!!!!!!!!!!
Imo season 1 of The Batman had the best theme song
My fave Batman Show :)
I binged the entire show a few months ago and imo:
Season 1 and 2 were great.
Season 3 was mid.
Season 4 was good.
Season 5 was fun.
Is that the voice of jerry from Totally Spies playing alfred?!😂
Series needs comeback with two face, scarecrow and ra ail ghoul and other villains!
No mention of D.A.V.E.?
(I love you D.A.V.E.)
I wasn't mad at Mr Freeze's interpretation. If every version since BTAS had the exact same origins for their villains, it would get stale. Granted, every version of Freeze AFTER the show use that origin in a similar way if not exactly the same. This had to stand out from the previous show
He should have a social life he's been doing it three years at that point, he's past being angry and closed off like normal bruce
Maxi was actually in an episode of BTAS as well, but I'm unsure if he made any other appearances outside of the one episode.
The Batman is an absolutely amazing show and it’s actually available on Netflix at time of writing (January 2025), so go give it a watch!
Loved Robin's color scheme no bright ugly yellow 😂 and purple shit on barbs homemade outfit she did a phenomenal job for a 15 year old
14:42 I mean he was in BTAS
Batman has had great animation renditions, I even liked the new show Caped Crusader even if people were shitting on Harleys new costume
Oh Yin how I miss thee
The best!!
Im still upset that Wonder Woman, a pretty important JL member I would say, never showed up in season five.
Venxous definitely has black friends . Did he just say, “ They definitely got into their bag “ ✊🏾😁
