Fun fact: the first arc of Batman beyond and the first arc of Superman the animated series are basically the same. At least from the villain’s point of view:
The fictional nation of Castnia is trying to buy illegal weapons under the table from an evil corporation. The superhero has to do some detective work and then sops him. Culminating in the origin of one of their big villains. Metalo for Superman and blight for Batman.

The thing that really got me to like Batman Beyond was the Spider-Man like formula they went with. Terry living a double life. His life as Batman often directly effects his life as Terry. It's one of the few ways I feel like DC paid respect and homage to their competitors at Marvel

One aspect I like about this series is how the theme about Legacy and "Creating your own identity" also works to create a contrast between Terry and his enemies. While Terry becomes a better person thanks to Bruce and the people in his life, his enemies not only are defeated and become worse because of their inability to change their ways (ex: Derek Powers becomes blight, Shriek becomes permanently deaf, the Royal Flush slowly dissolves and loses their money) but some of them, like Blight and Inque, are betrayed by their sons and daughters, who end up embracing their parents exemple and become worse than them.

It was long overdue for Terry to get character growth in the comics since the many titles while were bombastic, didn’t have much substance. Then again, DC Rebirth era was the next best thing for BB after Neo Year, imo

Your thoughts on Batman Beyond were equal to mine, Sal, except I became invested in the whole Batman Beyond concept during my early 20s, through a short by Darwyn Cooke to celebrate Batman's 75th anniversary. I only watched tge animated film, and I loved it more than the cartoon. After watching the series, I fell in love with Terry, who, in my opinion, is actually more relatable and better than Bruce, since Terry wasn't moved by hatred and revenge like Bruce but redemption and self-forgiveness, and had people he cared about, like Dana and his brother. Plus, it showcased perfectly Bruce's commitment to his crusade made him a very, very sad man, and is slowly forced to realise Terry is free to have his own life, something Bruce's partners, especially Dick, despised him for.

One of the factors about people who like Batman Beyond. Is if you're a fan of cyberpunk.
There's so many subtle nods to Philip K Dick, William Gibson, Akira, Ghost in the Shell. There's even a few shots at Phantom Menace, which came out that same year.
I have a friend who didn't like how commonplace robots and mutants were. The episode Splicers really annoyed him. Spider-Man isn't special if you can give anyone spider DNA. Or it was a lazy way to turn Batman into TMNT. Keep in mind that this is around Spiderman 2099 or the 2004 TMNT revival.
They never say it, but Batman Beyond is the best example of "The guy in the chair."

I grew up wit Batman since the 80's and loved the Batman ANimatewd series. It was perdect indeed.
And when I saw the Batman Beyond cincept the first time all years ago, I was really excited. I loved the idea of an old, wise and somewhat grumpy Bruce Wayne retired and now training & mentoring a young potentiall air to the mantle.
Also NOT being Tim Drake or Dick Greyson made it more interesting with adding the fact that his Wayne legacy as owner and leader of Wayne Enterprises is now in an constant battle against Dereck Powers, a ruthless businessman who merged his Powers company with Wayne's and over-took as CEO - also adding that the same man crossed path with Terry McGinnis, the new Batman made Powers an enemy of both Bruce & Terry for two very different motivations. Powers also becomes the evil mutated villian Blight so again being a double-level villian executed great made things even more interesting.
One of the biggest reasons this show was successful was because it was executed properly and had so much respect for its history and Batman legacy.
To bad the comic books released afterwards from 2010 and up are not in sync with the TV series as these comics wants to freakin add The Joker still alive (?), having a new Catwoman, having the bastard son Damian Wayne introduced (despite not existing what-so-ever in the animated series(es)) and having a new Batgirl worn by Dick Greyson's daughter (sigh). Credit still gives to Batman Beyond - Hush Beyond for having an interesting continuation story.

I'm not sure where it would fit in your video, but my favorite moment between Terry and Bruce was in S1, the episode with Shriek. At the end, Bruce explains to Terry that the voice that Shriek was using to trick Bruce into thinking he was crazy had no effect on him because he doesn't call himself "Bruce" in his own head; he calls himself "Batman." He was able to tell immediately that someone else was messing with him, and never fall for it.

Character wise I think Terry is closer, static shock in concept is closer to Spiderman but when it comes down to the substance of the character it's very obvious Terry is heavily inspired by Peter Parker. He faces many of the same struggles as Spiderman.

I grew up in Puerto Rico, early 2000s and my dad started burning movies on CDs, he knew I loved batman so the animated movies and series were no exception. For some reason, return of the joker was my favorite, I was 4 years old so I didn’t even realize it wasn’t Bruce Wayne. Over the years I’ve held the series and movie very close. So happy it’s finally getting the attention it deserves

Always found it so bizarre that the idea of Barbara Gordan and Bruce had a relationship. I know it was hinted at her having feelings for him in batgirl returns, but even so I just figured this was a teen girl crush on an older man thing.
But that they actually went ahead when Barbara was only just reaching legal age like maybe 19-20, while Bruce was in his mid 30s, that's just weird to me.
It's made even more weird because the joke from the early batman days was batman having a sexual relationship with Robin, which of course was played up for a joke as to why an older man keeps such a young ward in tight tunic, something only in silly fanfiction, meanwhile the writers of BTAS instead made him having a relationship with his young female ward and daughter to his friend Jim Gordan.
I'm actually glad we get to see Barbara grow old and into the role of commissioner, because it showed how silly she realised it was for her back then.

It gets worse as the comics revealed that Bruce got Barbara pregnant and she lost the baby due to miscarriage when she tried to crime fighting one night. That Dick and Bruce ended up on such bad terms due to their betrayal also seems like a bad move on the writing team.
In the comics , it's revealed that Nightwing moved to Bludhaven to start fresh away from the Bat family, and I believe Dick even ends up being the mayor there, and having a daughter (who eventually takes up the suit and Batwoman mantle for a while after Terry is brainwashed and out of commission?).

That Return to the Jedi slip of the tongue gave me a good laugh because I'm a huge Star Wars fan (Lucas era). I'm not sure if I ever noticed those parallels between Terry and Spider-Man before. Maybe I just didn't watch Batman Beyond enough as a kid to notice. Yet, I have seen some parallels between Batman Beyond and Spider-Man 2099 with the setting and aspects of the costume to a degree. Great video.

I was about 13-14 when Batman Beyond premiered and I loved it since the first minute. At the time , I loved it becuae the relationship master-apprentice of Bruce and Terry, and also the action and themes were directed to people of my age. Watching some reruns in cable TV the show is still great as the original BTAS, because (now as an adult that know much more) you can realize that the series were made with genuine love for the character despite being a corporate demand, and that love is what set him apart from the current trend of replacing the most well known an beloved heroes for newer versions, that usually take the mantle dishonoring and even humilliating the original, classic characters.

Bravo! Just bravo! I saw Batman Beyond from the beginning. I recall being in the emergency room for a broken finger the night this premiered. Epilogue is so great because it also showed Bruce’s compassion and humanity while in his prime. The fractured and tragic nature of Bruce brings an understanding that even Superman doesn’t have. It’s beautiful. Chokes me up now thinking about that magnificent episode!

I was immediately stunned by the graphics, very pure, and the cyberpunk megalopolis which make my think about Deus Ex. I immediately loved the idea of an old batman giving advices for the new one. Seing old ennemies of batman is very nice too. And even the theme is a fucking masterpiece. Shall I I confess it ? I love Batman Beyond more than the original series XD

Honestly, every one of the old great heroes in popular media should have a chance to be a mentor to someone who'll take the banner. The meta-narrative of comics in creating new versions of the character in different universes has the overall effect of diluting the impact of any singular story. Now instead of discussing the importance of a chapter in Batman's story, people instead dispute which variation of Batman in which universe or retcon is the truest.
This was what I always thought as the true merit of Young Justice. Each Justice League member taking on a protégé adds a humanizing, emotional component to stories that tend to increasingly escalate into galactic stakes. The quiet dynamics between a Bruce Wayne who expects a reluctant Dick Grayson to one day take the cowl, or a Clark Kent trying to support a Connor Kent that will never be a Superman that flies - oftentimes these dynamics are what make the galactic stakes hit hardest. And in a more cynical sense, since these licenses and creative properties are going to be reboot to the nth degree, seeing old familiar characters in a new light makes telling new stories with a new hero in the suit even easier to swallow.
Marvel did it wonderfully between Logan and Laura and between Stark and Peter and Sony did it phenomenally between Peter, Gwen and Miles. 'Superman & Lois' basically give them kids for the purpose of exploring the question of the Super-dad. DC did it so magnificently with Bruce and Terry, that you begin to wonder what was the true motivation to making Batman Beyond: telling the story of an old Bruce or of young Terry.
Obviously, Disney had an opportunity to do that with Luke Skywalker and Rey and but fumbled it so hard.

The theme becomes more and more relevant as time passes and as individual identity is more relevant today then ever, making it arguably the most timeless of the DCAU. Unlike the other entries you also experience Terry and to a lesser extent Bruce grow as the episodes and seasons continue, giving it a sense of progression despite being mostly episodic. And finally it never forgets its own legacy while shaping a new one and does so in a way that heightens the past in retrospect rather then like much of today's media which uses nostalgia superficially. In my opinion Batman Beyond is the best and most consistent entry in the DCAU. It only gets better and better with age, features a writing style that few can pull off, and treats its source material with dignity and respect.

My only critique is that you paint the fact that its aimed at a young audience as a bad thing but that’s the entire point, that’s what the studio execs asked for, that’s like saying Spidermans day to day life crippled the plot when thats the whole point, sure it may not be for everyone but it damn sure made batman beyond easier to watch as a child than the original batman series, i think it accomplished what it set out to accomplish

Part of why I liked beyond as much as I did back when I was a kid, was exactly that it wasn't just a Batman again. I mean technically it was, but the action was so much up there and the visuals jumped from Gothic to cyberpunk seamlessly, while keeping the nice quasi mature themes that TAS had.
AND still had og Bruce Wayne.

One of my favorite things is this underlining sense of redemption and hope for both Bruce and Terry. Bruce burned his bridges and would be alone, losing both his identity as Batman and as the leverage as a rich and influences person. Terry was just a normal kid dealing with his parents' divorce, have been to the juvvie and could be considered a lost cause as he was edging into the 'problematic kid' territory. Bruce tutored this young man, allowing him to become an adult with a whole life ahead of him; while Terry actually gave the old man the motivation to retake his family legacy and keep on being a better influence for Gotham. You don't need to put someone down to be a better "you", both people can elevate each other and make the world a little better
