    How to fix Slow WiFi at Home! / Netgear Orbi Setup with existing router.
    Recently, Paul’s friends asked him “Why is my home WiFi so slow?” So in this video, Paul visits their house where slow and patchy WiFi meant that using the Internet around the house was a very painful experience, despite having fibre optic broadband. The Netgear Orbi “Whole Home” WiFi mesh system blankets the entire upstairs and downstairs of the house with strong WiFi providing fast speeds to all corners of the house, even with the demands of children streaming videos on their tablets, TV streaming and general Internet usage.
    We set up the Netgear Orbi RBK40 AC2200 which comprises two access points - the Orbi Router (downstairs, in the Living Room) and the Orbi Satellite (upstairs on the landing, in the middle of all the bedrooms).
    So, if you want to learn how to fix slow Internet or you’re getting frustrated and asking yourself “why is my wifi so slow on my phone?!” then watch this video to learn how to speed up WiFi and take your home Home WiFi from Awful to Awesome with Netgear Orbi!

    Had the 53 version for about 6 weeks, it's revolutionised our wifi, we now get 220mbps upload and 22mbps download all the time, do dropouts, in every corner of the house. Totally amazing. We are virgin too, super hub 3, and I now realise it's the hub, they are useless.

    I game and have done since 2006, i need low ms, also we now have multiple rooms streaming also plus 2 remote working home members(18 connected in all). So i went and tried many manyoptions to get each item to work, was always something wrong or missing or not optimal. I went to orbi and never and never looked back, 500mb from ISP and 400mb at any test point in the house, 1 router + 2 satellites. Best purchase i ever made, had it a year now and had first issue today, simply reset to default -re-installed as a new setup with same SSID took about 30mins and all fixed. its simple, easy to use and i leave the virgin media cable router in modem mode never to be touched again. Best item i ever purchased, i tried various options adding(and reducing speeds) from other vendors, and it was always same result until Orbi. i would recomment ORBI every day of the week.

The only issue is it keeps disconnecting my devices offline randomly . Different devices . I must’ve restarted the router 6 times . Any help please ? I really hate to return the system . Yep, just connect your mobile router into the Internet port on your Orbi router with an ethernet cable. If your mobile router has a "modem only" mode then that's ideal as you'll avoid Double NAT which can cause some problems so try to avoid that if you can.

    One further question please. For fixed ips now, do I only note current ip address and MAC address for each of them to use in Orbi? BTW Orbi arriving this week. Should I use static ip addresses? Did so for some devices after advice on internet!

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork
      @SwitchedOnNetwork  3 года назад +1

      I'd only use static IPs for devices where you have a reason for it to need to be static so it's personal choice really. You can either set that on the device or with IP reservation based on Mac address. Just remember to change the DHCP range to not include the IPs you'll be using as static.

    Hi there, Thanks for the vid. Was going to get the Orbi AX4200 but saw that the Asus AX 6600 (AX XT8) is at the same price. Is there one you'd recommend over the other. Someone with a 3 storey house still had dead zones with both models and got the Deco M4 * 3 units and it solved his problems at a much cheaper cost. Our house is a bit like that 2.5 storey+ garden. Thankls very much. Cheers

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork
      @SwitchedOnNetwork  3 года назад +1

      I've never used or reviewed the Asus I'm afraid so I couldn't comment on it specifically. Dead zones will always be a possibility depending on specific layout of the house and wall material/thickness etc., but I'd generally try and go at least one AP per storey, and a second if dead spots still exist (and moving the AP doesn't fix). Hope that helps 👍

    Quite a few of my wifi power plugs, or switches all work via 2.4Ghz Only ..I have Virgin Media hub 3 and the only way i could get them to work was to temporally turn off the 5Ghz and then rename the SSID to distinguish between the two Frequencies of 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz then they worked fine.. So my question is can i do the same with the orbi?? I read somewhere that you can have a guest wifi so can the guest wifi be renamed and choose that one between 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz ? Thank you for your Great informative videos

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork
      @SwitchedOnNetwork  3 года назад

      I don't think you can completely disable the 5GHz, but you can go to the web interface -> Advanced -> Advanced Setup -> Wireless Settings and turn off SSID Broadcast and drop the Transmit power all the way down to 25% (the lowest). That should stop your plugs seeing the 5GHz network and let them connect to the 2.4GHz. Then, you should be able to enable everything again once they're connected. Let me know how you get on!

    Does the auto firmware update the satellite first and then the Router? Is it best to use auto update or manual one. I noticed there is one satellite firmware file. Persumably this is used to update both Satellites if done manually? Thanks.

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork

      Use the auto firmware update function unless you have a reason to do it manually (eg if it fails for some reason). Bear in mind the updates won't install on their own overnight or anything like that, you'll have to respond to the prompt in the app or web interface and press Install to have it do it.

    Many thanks for previous replies. I currently have on my wireless Asus Router 2 SSIDs for 2.4Gz and 5Gz. For a painless switch to Orbi, if I use the same SSID names and Bands, will it work? • @SwitchedOnNetwork
      @SwitchedOnNetwork  3 года назад +1

      That will work, however bear in mind that the Orbi merges both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands into one unified SSID and it determines for you which to use on each device at any given time. So assuming your current SSID names make reference to 2.4/5 I'd just start again with a new naming system. Nope, not at all. You just need to go into the Virgin router's settings and change it to "modem only" mode then figure out which of the network ports is still active. On my Virgin router it's the bottom port, but you might have to use a bit of trial and error. The somebody must have been talking about another provider - no permission is required to install your own equipment in your own home! (Or they may have been meaning if you replace the Virgin modem with another modem - to be clear, you keep the virgin modem in place, but just disable the router + WiFi parts of it... Yes I would like to put the orbi satellite at the rear of the house but there is no electrical socket there at the moment so I would have to run an extension lead

    I tried connecting it says no internet connection and I changed the virgin media hub to modem mode. I’m gonna return the router back.

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork
      @SwitchedOnNetwork  2 года назад

      When you switch your Virgin Media superhub into modem-only mode, only 1 of the network ports remains active - the others are disabled. So it could be that you've plugged the router into one of those ports. Which Superhub do you have, and which port did you connect to the Orbi router?

    Will this work with 1gb board band thanks

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork
      @SwitchedOnNetwork  2 года назад

      Yes it will, the WAN port on the back of the modem is a gigabit port so your wired network will be able (in theory) to take full advantage of your 1Gbps broadband connection, however on the model shown in this video the max WiFi speeds are under a gig. I'd recommend you watch the more recent video on this channel from last month (here: ruclips.net/video/4BKjK0SEJi4/видео.html) which explores the newer WiFi6 model which also has a faster WAN port (for future proofing) and faster WiFi speeds too.

    Upgraded my virgin media from 200meg to 500meg and got no Improvement at all using a Netgear R7000 Wi-Fi ac/5, the virgin engineer told us it was spread between the devices on out network rather than a single stream to be enjoyed by one device. Cue new router... one rax120 Wi-Fi ax/6 and moving the super hub 3 to the centre of the house for better coverage, Wi-Fi speeds are now 2-400 meg in every room even through solid brick walls and wired devices can hit 600 meg at quite times 3-400 meg most other times.

      The Orbi provides both, merged into one visible WiFi "network" and it intelligently decides which to use to serve each individual device at any one time - and in my own personal experience, does an excellent job of it. No more worrying about which you're connected to and having to switch connections yourself...

      @feechlamanna676 4 года назад

      Going for the rbk50, at the moment have tplink archer 1600 supplied by provider and yeah the walls are solid brick.. The tplink router is great but doesn't have long range... The orbi goes for £300 in Australia so it don't come cheap

    • @SwitchedOnNetwork
      @SwitchedOnNetwork  4 года назад

      Cool, yeah it's not cheap but that's a good thing - better quality kit. See how you get on with dedicated 5Ghz backhaul between router and satellite(s) and you can always switch to wired backhaul if the walls are just too thick!

      I didn't have a second camera operator that day, so John (whose house I was at) helped out. Considering he'd never operated a professional camera with manual focus before, and had a quick 2-minute lesson from me, he did a pretty good job! Sometimes you just have to go with what you've got 😀

    for me using orbi went from bad to worse. that piece of crap costs 200 bucks. i bought it to use for my computer that is far from the wifi. running an ethernet would be impossible. when i got it, it came with NO INSTRUCTIONS. so i had to figure out how to set it up. when i finally set it up my computer kept saying no connection but it worked. and i was getting 200 mbps. the stupid orbi app told me to reset my router which i did and my devices kept saying no connection. 200 mbps is fine but paying that amount of money for that. sad. even though the wifi worked some apps didn't. DO NOT BUY IT
