The BEST MESH WIFI for your Home Office/Smart Homes? Netgear Vs. Linksys Vs. Google!

- A smart home is only as good as its wifi connection. And to ensure that your smart devices can actually reach wifi, it’s important to get a mesh wifi router that’s worth your time and your money.
Getting a mesh wifi setup is like buying an actual blanket, if it’s full of holes and comes up short it’s not really worth the purchase. Mesh devices cover your home in a blanket of wifi. A warm cozy wifi blanket that’s just super fast and consistent.
For the TL:DW crowd, between the Google Nest, Linksys Vello and Netgear Orbi, the Vello comes out on top. It’s the strongest overall performer. Next up would be the GoogleNest Wifi followed by the Orbi.
BUT I’ll be honest with you, between the last two products, the Orbi may be better in some instances like gaming, NAS-ing and homes with brick walls whereas the Google product might be better for those in smaller home, who live in a perfect wifi environment and use voice commands all the time.

Here’s are the following speediest setups (00:02:46) I used to test these smart home mesh’s:
Base station only - 00:03:26
Base station + Repeater - 00:04:47
Base station encased in brick - 00:05:55
Base station encased in brick + Repeater - 00:07:07
For test #1, the Google Nest Wifi came out on top whereas the Orbi performed the poorest. If all you need is a good base station, the Google Nest Wifi is definitely the one to get.
For test #2, which would be your typical smart home setup, the Linksys Velop performed the best. It had the most consistent results. The Orbi was terrible in our tests.
For the brick test, Linksys Velop came out on top, giving us the highest speeds. The Orbi again performed the worst, especially when it came to distance from the router.
With the last test, the Orbi did the best which was surprising given how poorly it performed on all the other tests.
UI/Setup - 00:09:49
When it comes to the UI and setup, the Google Nest Wifi and Linksys Vellop were easy to setup. Between the two, we’d give the nod to the Vellop because it only takes one app to setup and manage whereas the Google Nest Wifi uses the Google Home App to setup and any additional features requires the use of the Google Wifi app.
The Orbi’s app is fine but the setup process required several attempts to get going. As a side note, during our testing, we turned each router on and off and the Orbi also took the longest to come back online.
Hardware - 00:11:10
For hardware, there are two things you need to consider. The size and the # of ports. The Google Nest Wifi has the smallest footprint but the least expandability. The base one one port and the repeater has none.
The Linksys Velop provides a single extra ethernet ports on the base and repeater. From a size perspective, it’s tall and slender so it’s easier to tuck away.
The Orbi looks like a piece of technology. It’s large and ugly (from our perspective) BUT it offers the most built-in expandability with a plethora of extra ports to plug in whatever you want.
Router Management - 00:12:57
For most people, you’ll just need to plug in th units and run the app. For people who need a bit more, managing the Linksys Velop is simpler as everything is done through an app.
The Google Nest Wifi installs through the Google Home App and is managed through the Wifi App. It also has time-caps on the device priority which is seems silly to me.
The Orbi app has the fewest options to manage your router. If you want the full gamut of router abilities, you need to use the web-interface to manage your device. This isn’t explicitly stated anywhere in the packaging or routers. I just stumbled across it by accident.
Special Features - 00:16:32
If you’re a big fan of using Google Assistant, the repeater with the Google Nest Wifi has a speaker and Google Assistant built into it. The base does not (also, the repeater doesn’t sound as good as Google Home.)
With the Linksys Velop, you have a feature called aware which uses the wifi signals to detect movement in your home. It’s a neat feature but the problem for me was that I had no idea if the movement was from inside my home, on my property or was it movement from my neighbors?
The Netgear Orbi by itself doesn’t anything special BUT Netgear does offer an outdoor module so that you don’t have to cover your repeater with a ziplock if you’re looking to expand your wifi outside.
That dog was looking at at him like he owned it money.
Bro I thought the same thing. Doggy look like a dog version of the Monopoly man
amazing observation
better than his wife when he was talking...LOL

@@faisalali9290 hello this is Denise f i e l d s and I received your reply I'd like to thank you quit taking that time out to send however we have something in common music
Review was informative. BUT, the best part of this video was your dog. The dog's calmness is a trait that is SORELY LACKING in most humans today. Kudos to you both. PS give stats on dog. Breed? Age? Etc? . Thanks.
I came for the tech review but stayed for that handsome boy!!!!
sexist
Yeah the dog looks cute 😅
We all know you're talking about the dog... 🤣
That’s what they wanted you to do is to look at him instead of what he saying. Another words that way you go after the product even though it may not be good because all you’re doing is Google eyeing him.
I love your dog. Such a good boy. He is looking at you like you are his hero
Since April 2020 I have an Orbi RBK43S-100NAS, also listed as Orbi AC2200 and it works great. It is listed as having coverage for 6,000 sq ft house. I have the base upstairs on top of cabinet and 1 satellite downstairs in kitchen and 1 satellite downstairs in living room. Good coverage in our 2200 sq ft house and all the way out to the mailbox at the end of the driveway. Everything is connected with 5 GHz, except for an outdoor smart plug that only works on 2.4 GHz (Orbi figured that out for me). I have an iMac hardwired to the base and everything else Wifi (smart Samsung TV, an Amazon Firestick, 2 iPhones, 1 iPad, 2 Dell laptops, 1 wireless HP printer, and a thermostat). The laptops and iPhones connect seamlessly to base or satellite as we move around the house. Sometimes items connect to the base when a satellite is closer - go figure. We have Cox Communications at 150 Mbps and do not have any buffering watching a streaming movie. Setup was pretty easy and the app is fun to see what's connected to what and to see the connection speed. At first the HP printer and Orbi had a problem with their IP address, but tech support at HP helped me get that straightened out. I liked that I could hard wire to the base and satellites if needed which is why I got this model, plus at the time is was $100 less than a similar Linksys model.
Wow. I'm getting incredible results with my Orbi setup. It was fast and easy to set up and now consistent speeds throughout my house. Love it.
I absolutely love Montys tie! I didn’t know this channel existed... but now I am here for Monty also!
I’m thankful you rented a house to review all this and give us this helpful info. But can we talk about Monty for a moment? His suit and tie for the video along with the way he looks at you as you speak is so heart warming. Monty, Mozart says “woof”. I’m going to try setting up the mesh system that came with Linksys. Wish me luck.
I have the orbi, absolutely love it. Signal everywhere and great speed. When I bought it I wondered if I needed an extra outdoor satellite for my garden. But my satellite in the kitchen is enough to cover my garden also. I have my orbi now 2 years, and never had a single connection problem whatsoever.
I’ve had a lot of success with Orbi in my 2 story home. It’s been a huge improvement over traditional options.
I love the orbi
I have Orbi. I put the Velop dual band in my mother’s because the Orbi wasn’t consistent enough for an elderly parent. The Velop works well for her.
Your dog is in LOOOOOVE with U!
The lack of Wifi6 with the Nest is such a bummer. Great video!
Found your channel while researching upgrades for my smart home. My first gen Google wifi mesh has been letting me down lately and your video has sold me on the Velop. You put a lot of effort into your videos and it shows, hope you are able to start making videos again soon!
I have nest WiFi in 2200 sq. ft. 2 story home. I went with 2 base units, one downstairs and one upstairs using a wired backhaul. The results are nothing short of perfect. I'm getting what I'm paying for in every corner of my home, even in the basement.
Dog: Seriously? My bowl is empty.
that dog is so cute...I thought first that its a puppet listening for a cue for him to talk next...haha....
I had to subscribe when I saw this video. This is one of the most thorough informative real world video I have seen yet. Great job !!
A lot of people that use Mesh also use an Ethernet Backhaul. The advantage is having 1 SSID with seamless hand-offs. The Google Nest is WiFi 5 not 6 (802.11ax). The Orbi WiFi 6 System AX6000,
Linksys MX10 Velop AX, and Netgear NIGHTHAWK MESH WIFI 6 SYSTEM (MK62) are WiFi 6.
so you dont need to connect it to a wired line right? Can you use these as a signal booster repeater for your hotspot off of an iPhone let’s say?
I really like your puppy and your review. he is adorable.
Good video but I think you MISSED a couple of other very good options..🤷♂️
Like TP link Deco M9 plus..🤔
I am Networking Professional, on a low level 😋..
I have installed all of these mesh may be more than 8,9 hundred of them but honestly I found found Deco M9 the most stable and 30 percent more faster than Velop tri-band, though Orbi RBK 53 is still a lot more faster than Velop.
Infact a 7 times in the same house where velop was installed earlier and than they wanted to replace with Deco m9 it was almost 30% more faster.. and I am taking about Thick Concrete walls of Dubai.
And one of the biggest issue with Velop is that its very very unstable, out of 3, 1 node would just get disconnect on its own, thought still being fairly close enough.
And it would take almost 13 minutes to setup at least to setup just one of the nodes. 1st it will wake up the node in 3 mins, 2nd it will connect with the network in another 6 min and so on..
Where as Deco M9 takes 10 mins all together to setup 3 nodes 📢.
So having experienced this maybe i would dis-agree with your opinion..
Sorry 🤷♂️
I love that Monty doesn't take his eyes off of you when you are talking.
Great review, lots of good info. Thank you!
It's like understand what he said 😂
For the first 5 sec I thought the dog was a stuffy as it sits so still! Great content based on a lot of work and data. Keep up the awesome work. Subscribed!
Orbi hands down, the smaller units are not powerful enough to penetrate walls effectively at long distance with high speeds. The browser functionality is also a plus when you want to have more control, not to mention you have the ability to hard wire your devices.
I bought a linksys velop and it caused all kinds of issues with my systems. I moved to the Orbi and all the issues went away. I’m very satisfied with the Orbi.
I loved your review, especially since it's coming from someone who's trying to look at things objectively from a real world usage perspective. I personally have owned the top Wifi5 Orbi (RBK50) for about 3 years now and it has worked flawlessly with. Speeds over Wifi are consistently at the maximum speeds I'm paying for and the range has been fantastic. I can control my internet speakers from the fence in my backyard, which is approximately 100 feet or so from the house. I will say though that it wasn't until after going through the Advanced settings that my Orbi worked as well as it does.
Thanks again for a great review!
My Velop tri-band arrives tomorrow. Thanks for your review!
Brick test is the best! We rent and the landlords had the wifi installed in the converted garage (to family room), meaning it's surrounded by concrete walls. We have a brand new wifi 6 fios router with 1GB speeds and barely get a signal in the room right freaking next to it, literally through 1 wall 5-6 feet away. Speeds are 16mbps. Absolute insanity. IDK why they had it installed there, and they won't let us have one installed elsewhere. Therefore, here I am looking at this stuff.
Monte is gorgeous. He was fixated on your every word!!
I have the original Google Mesh Wifi and find it pretty great. I live in a 110yr old house totally made of brick and overall does a great job. Wireless gets well over 100mbps download and 11+mpbs upload. I find it best to re-boot every week or so along with any laptop/phone/ipad etc. to get a fresh connection.
If you were issued a Wireless Gateway (modem and router in one unit), you need to bridge the device as only a modem and then only use the #1 Ethernet port to the first mesh WiFi point. This avoids double NAT problems.
I have the Orbi rbk50 and it works really well if you’re willing to tinker and I hope they fix this in future firmware. The dedicated back haul channel is not listed or configurable in the web ui or app. One day my neighbor got a new modem from their ISP that used the same 5ghz channel as my orbi back haul, the network performance took a huge hit. You have to enable telnet, then you can change the back haul channel via command line. My internet speed is 125 up and down, I get that speed everywhere in the house with orbi as long as the back haul channel is not interfered with. I did a test transferring files between computers in different rooms, one wired to the base, the other wired to a satellite and got a bit over 800 mbps
Fwiw, I got the Orbi a few years ago… and have been happy
Generally, I find that metal…. Like in a kitchen… is worse than bricks for killing wifi signal….
The Orbi has a couple of nice features…. Now it is older and has a discounted price, The separate channel function is valuable … basically, they have a totally separate router circuit to link the remote stations…. This way the connection to the remote is not absorbing bandwidth going to your devices. Finally, I like that the remote has a wired network connection…. Which uses the separate channel…. So again, it does not share bandwidth with your wireless devices
That said, I do not game so do not need enormous bandwidth
Great video, your dog did steal the show. Classy tie!
I am wicked happy to come across your video. Love the fact of how normal you are.........very cool. Thanks for the detailed, thoroughness you applied to this video/review. So helpful.....I was able to make a sound decision on one of the products in your review BECAUSE of your review. :) :) :)
I had a poodle that looked just like yours. I loved that dog. I am not sure I need a modem, router, mesh wifi. I just know I have an outside shop (beside my house) my husband built me and he installed EERO extender out here but I still can't get my HP 6000 series to work out here. So aggravating! My computer and tv will work but not my printer
Your dog is so cute. He loves you so much. And great review too :-)
I love this video! Dude it was very informative but you were upstaged by your dog! When I saw him with the necktie and watching you like he was waiting for his chance to chime in, I couldn't stop laughing! but again, a extremely informative review...THANK YOU!
Owned a Velop and upgraded to Google Nest. Hands down the Google Nest is able to sustain higher speeds and consistently delivers. Velop maxed out at about 54Mbps while Google Nest is 94Mbps on average. This was tested at the extremes of our three level house. You’re so very right. The Velop software was always painful to use. Google is two apps (argh!) but at least they both work :)
Great video, haven’t seen you for awhile and you’re reviews actually got me into the whole smart automation world so keep producing good quality reviews as you have always done
I feel like you should mentioned the wired backhaul setup for the Orbi for those who have hardline on each floor or at there designated area of choice, for me it's the device of choice and I would recommend it if you really want maximum wifi speed on every floor.
Your dog looks at you "when you gonna stop talking , I'm hungry. "
Lol the dogs straight up chillin
Love the doggie’s concentration 😀
I intended to finish this even tho I already knew the verdict (w/o finishing the vid) bc of your dog! He's so cute
Your beautiful dog is the absolute winner. I also liked your video. Thank you for having your dog next to you and thank you for the video.
Your dog is looking at you to see if you're crazy and want to make eye contact. In the dogs mind, you're talking to no one.
Monty is saying "Hurry with the snacks Dude !!"....Not paying attention for "That's a good boy" LOL
Got the Velop. Planning to get the Dual Band for individual rooms. Mesh Wifi is just like what he said: ‘a blanket’.
Thank you for the nice review. Very helpful. Your dog adores you.
Dude, how many treats does your buddy get? That’s amazing! I wish my dog sat still like that looking at me for more than 20 seconds lol!
I have Velop and don’t have the same opinion. I don’t use it for an office but for the entire house. I got it because I wanted to have parental controls for my kids. It doesn’t work. At all and I believe I’m having a speed issue with my Velop.
You are spot on about hard-wiring to the points but you don't get the full benifit of hardwire if you are not using a wired backhaul. Being able to use a wireless backhaul is a great option to have but it should really be your second option only if you have no way to hardwire. There is a significant Improvement to hard-wiring. And you are not limited on how far away you can have the points away from each other when you hardwire. For example I have one of my points out in my shed to cover the backyard... the performance of this point would not be very good if I didn't Hardware because it is not close enough to the points in the house to get a good solid Wireless backhaul connection.
I currently have the last generation Google Wi-Fi and this has been a great system. But looking at the new Nest WiFi I'm pretty disappointed because they seem to be focused more on Google Assistant and smart speaker functionality then focusing on actual Network functionality in performance. I already have Google Home Speakers all over my house so I do not need my Wi-Fi setup to also be smart home speakers and then charge me more for it on top of it. I would much rather Google focus on just making a good solid wifi system and quit trying to make some hybrid device. They removed stuff that I want and added things that I don't want... This not a very good way for Google to keep customers coming back.
Velop has been a nightmare. They had issues with smart home light switches for months. And Velop doesn’t do well with iPhones. I constantly have to disable WiFi on our phones to do anything. It’s terrible. Had for a year, countless hours on with support :-(
look how attentive the dog is lmao
This is so incredibly detailed, thank you for putting this together
I’m convinced your dog Monte was a human in his past life 😂
I am subscribing after seeing this video, the first one I've seen from you. Love the dog, analogies, jokes.. everything. You clearly go thru a lot of painstaking effort for this review and it shows. I'm going with Google because I've invested so much in Google ecosystem already-- thank you for solidifying my choice!
Thanks! Yours, interestingly, is the only review where the Orbi doesn't trounce all other systems on speed.
Bro, I absolutely LOVE your videos!!! We HAVE TO LINK UP!!!! Side note, I have no issues using your Amazon link to purchase products when possible. Only thing is I would recommend you give a portion of your proceeds to Charity. That will undoubtedly get you more sales and help people in the interim!!! Take care!!!
You don't need the google wifi app unless it gives you more control somehow also for the google wifi that was the point and not the router which has one ethernet port on the back
Nice video. Glad Monty learned to talk finally!
omg the dog is actually listening lmao...aww
I have the Orbi. I hard wire the satellites and like the fact they all have 4 gig ports on the router and both satellites. Also, i have port forwarding, but must use the browser.
Good review, your dog gets props for sitting like a good dog.
Had google mesh WiFi for about a year… it was good until an update ruined the puck.. wouldn’t talk to the router… got fed up and ditched the google WiFi for eero 6 plus… best move i ever did
I got an Arris ax7800. I got it for half the price ( the box was damaged not the router) . So far I love it. Much faster than my Apple AirPort Extreme.
I’ve watched a ton of reviews for mesh routers and this one is by for the most thorough and informative. Thank you for an excellent review. Question; I’m building a house and have the ability to run cables everywhere, so in a situation where you can hard wire all these devices and need to connect some smart home devices like cameras and smart locks, which router would you go with?
You can use multiple Google Nest routers instead of the Points. If you need to plug switches in to multiple points. I have 2 rooms with routers that connect to switches. My network uses 3 routers and no Points because I have HK Citation GA speakers & really didn't need any more around the house.
the dog was just waiting for his pay for appearance $500 bucks
Hey bro I subscribed because you clealry care about this and put a lot into it. Renting a house and buying all equipment. Me and my wife just closed on a house and I'm choosing between these three mesh networks. Keep grinding!
Great review! However, I am confused by the multiple Orbi and Velop models available. It appears you reviewed the Orbi RBK23 but I would consider the RBK53 which has 4x4 antennas. I would love to have that compared for performance/distance. In fact it would be nice to have a review explaining and comparing all the Netgear models.
I need to set my mesh router as an AP with the rest as wireless to that. Be nice to see how easy it is to set up. Oh, and the gorgeous dog talks way too much.
This video was very thorough. Very insightful and covered exactly what I was looking for.
Monty Rock! He is the most attentive doggy I have ever ever seen. Great video!
Your dog is funny. He really act like he knows what you're talking about...lol but I enjoyed the info too. 😄
Ha ha the pup was the most attentive listener. Nice video btw.
From what I read, I believe the backhaul between base and satellites uses one of the 5GHz bands if all units are running on wireless. Tring to figure out if any of the mesh systems can use ethernet backhaul and free up both of the 5GHz bands.
dog's like.. "who the f you talkin to?"
You missed a big opportunity by not including the Eero. I have tried all of those personally and Eero outshines them all...by a lot.
His affiliate deal with them isnt as good!
I've read plenty of reviews an Eero has place among the lowest in most reviews. I ain't gonna touch Eero because of their poor performance
Systolic120mmHg interesting. When I do some research, Eero frequently ranks among the top. Everyone’s opinions and uses are different it sounds like.
Eero is definitely not the best hardware. There's a reason Orbi is 6 times the size and has far more features. The AX6000, RBK50, or SRK60 is light-years better. The point is to get the best coverage and speed through a mesh, not look compact.
@@equilibrium1736 I just accidentally saw this video again. Interesting thought since this video ranked Orbi the worst of the 3.
My walls are concrete. I can't even get a decent phone signal in the house, so I need perfect wifi coverage everywhere. Not a very large house, but 3 floors full of concrete.
Google wifi is current setup. It doesn't quite cut it. At all. It's being returned in 2 days.
Ordered the Orbi RBK50 now. Hoping that'll have a stronger signal.
Excellent choice, that is the correct decision. If you could afford the AX6000 that would even be better.
@Kim Nguyen
Signal on the top floor is still very weak, so I'll have to get a third satellite sooner or later. For now I'm happy with the RBK50 after about 2 months of use.
@@equilibrium1736 It's more a matter of what I'm willing to spend on it xD This was already more than I was willing to pay for wifi..
i just got the netgear mk62. easy set up really good range getting 445-485 though out the house. simple set up very happy.
You made learning about the mesh system enjoyable! I enjoyed your sense of humor
Gracias
Fun little comparison! Thanks for renting the test lab for your videos! His tie was pretty cool!
Lol.... I love the review...but I can’t stop looking at the dog’s reaction. Anyway... very informative review . Thank you!
Without a doubt Orbi is the go to if your have to game on wifi👍🏽
So I have read that the Nest Wifi repeaters are horrible and if you get two base stations and use one as a repeater, the speeds increase significantly. Can you confirm that if not, it would be good to try it. Thanks, great and complete review!
I switched to 2 routers and used wired backhaul. Probably a 20-30 MPS increase. Coverage larger too.
Good video; The like is for your awesome, business professional pup
Champion I'm here for the brick test👍
Very entertaining and informative. The canine cohort was a definite bonus. Still trying to decide the best replacement for elderly, dual band, Linksys.
I have had the Orbi since January and constantly get the bandwidth that I am paying for 300+ Mbps. only thing I had to do was telnet into the router to open up the 2.4GHz SSID. We have a 2700 Squ ft house.
Dog: Please let me know when u are done :D
;) "Just tell me what you know, you Jedi a**." Love it.
Who needs a router? I'm more interested in how I can adopt a dog like Monte. He is absolutely mellow.
your dog is so lovely
Great review. Thank for advice and a great video too. You know what....i love that lovely pup.
you have to put your modem into BRIDGE MODE and disable double nat to get true speeds without any interference
I have the Orbi Ac3000 with one satellite & 1Gig fiber internet in my 2000 sq ft home and it works flawlessly. I get over 800 mb/s up and down consistently, and rarely do I have any hiccups. Anyone watching this don’t let this review convince you the Orbi isn’t a great product. I run over 40 connected devices to my smart home with little to no problems.
I have the Orbi ac2200. The base and satellite finally give me full coverage including in my block wall basement. I guess my house happens to be the right application for the orbi to never have any issues at 250mbps all at 5ghz. These others are very interesting though.
