Jason Reitman wasn’t kidding. This really is a, in his words, “thriller comedy” and time itself is the villain.
Also Chevy Chase.

I kinda can’t get over the Chevy Chase casting. “Oh, is this an ensemble?” line tells you everything you need to know about him at that time.
At THAT time?
@@timjohnson7929 haha boom! Well said my friend

Not a lot of people remember that Jim Henson was temporarily part of SNL. Nice little detail there. :)

The casting for Chevy Chase, John Belushi and Jim Henson is perfect. This casting director deserves a raise.
Garrett Morris is the single most accurate casting here. You could've fooled me into thinking he was the same person.
Can you believe the person playing Jim Henson is also playing Andy Kaufman?
there is a documentary film directed by Ron Howard called "Jim Henson Idea Man" (on Disney+).
NO, Chevy Chase should be tall and handsome. This guy is not compelling
@@camcam294 It would be near to impossible to find an actor with Chase's features who could also pull off his voice and mannerisms. Chase is truly one of a kind, no one else looks like him really or has that persona.
Everybody’s talking about the Chevy actor but whoever that is playing Belushi could be his grandson, insane resemblance.
It's Matt Wood, aka Officer Kenneth Parker from Law and Order
@@phantomzone2725 Even in random pictures without makeup he looks like Belushi, with a dash of Judd Hirsch.

The Chevy Chase actor is spot on
Corey Michael Smith, who was also The Riddler in Gotham
Yeah, that last scene was amazing.
I'm just as impressed by the lead playing Lorne Michaels. He's not doing some kind of caricature of his voice or anything, he just looks and acts exactly like him in all the subtle ways. Him standing there silently watching from under the camera is like, identical to a photo of Lorne down to his face and the way he stands

Same!
Having Jim Henson mention what Michael O’ Donoughe did to a Big Bird toy because he (O’ Donoughe) hated writing for the SNL Muppets is the kind of detail that makes me want to see this movie!
Edit: This is the most likes I’ve ever gotten on a RUclips comment, thanks everybody!
Except why does he sound exactly like Frank Oz?
@@tubasaur Because Frank Oz did the voice of Jim Henson. Uncredited.
O' Donoghue was like his own thing. When I watch old interviews of cast members who worked with him, they speak of him with this mixture of appreciation & fear as if speaking his name will summon him.

@@timthegem Not sure if you're shitting me but that's actually kind of believable. Where did you hear that?
I didn't realize until now how young they all were back then, Lorne included.
They really were a bunch of kids that invented something from scratch and changed history.
They were heavily influenced by Monty Python!
@@AndredChastain-p4u They were heavily influenced by marijuana and cocaine --- until Belushi died.
I was a teen..it was great! Monty Python led the way as reruns here in the U.S. for several years before SNL came on. So we were ready for something different.
@@AndredChastain-p4u Nothing wrong with that.
Let’s not give TOO MUCH credit. The comics of Second City and The Comedy Store and the Improv were creating professional comics outta thin air, hence we began letting magicians gel jokes on stage and things started getting outta hand.

How jealous is EVERY SNL cast member that someone get to do a Lorne impression for a whole movie??
He didn't do a Lorne impression in any of the scenes shown in the trailer, though.
Mike Myers did it for 3 Austin Powers movies...
Touché.
I like the one Bill Hader did on Conan where Michaels name drops serial killers.
To me, what really stands out is how Gabriel LaBelle (who is playing the young Lorne Michaels) has basically played the younger versions of 2 iconic figures already (Michaels and of course a young Steven Spielberg in THE FABELMANS (directed by Spielberg himself)).
Gotham’s Riddler as Chevy Chase is PERFECTION
Thanks for mentioning that -- I knew he looked familiar but couldn't place him!

Can I point out how perfect Cory Michael Smith looks as a young Chevy Chase? It's uncanny.
YES!!

Jane and Dan look pretty spot on too! Only character I don't really like is whoever the guy Lorne is talking to?
Philip seymour hoffman's son is the actor, not sure who he's playing though.
Matthew Rhys as George Carlin looks awesome - didn’t expect that casting
Really helps that his American accent is already halfway between Carlin and Kurt Russell.
I didn’t know George Carlin worked on Saturday Night Live, I miss that guy.
@@SuperBoy-ps9dzhe was the very first host. He actually hated the idea of the show and refused to be in any of the sketches. Lorne agreed to just let him do his monologues.

For me being just a kid up late, this show was that moment I felt my life change. I learned that I liked weird and dark humor. The original show also is what pulled me through what was going to be a very rough, dark period in my life. I'm looking forward to watching this.
Cant wait to see this film. I was 16 years old when SNL premiered. I watched it every week for about 25 years. The original cast was priceless.
You had me at Jim Henson
They had me at George Carlin
2:03 well it’s nice to know they’re depicting Chevy accurately
I remember watching the first show as a Freshman in 1975 in my college dorm TV lounge...
They had to call it "Saturday Night" because Howard Cosell already had "Saturday Night Live" for his ABC variety show. They picked up "Saturday Night Live" after that show got cancelled and off the air.
Note that the cold open close line has never changed. It's STILL, "LIVE, from New York, it's SATURDAY NIGHT!"
Oh shit, thanks for that, never knew!
Yep. ABC was sooooo excited that the Bay City Rollers were going to appear and sing their big song "Saturday Night." Cosell was so "cringe."
LOL that's a cool fact! Never knew that!
Because it would be redundant to say "Live from New York it's Saturday night live." You already made it clear it's live.
ironic that Howard Cosell's show had Bill Murray, his brother Brian Doyle Murray, and Christopher Guest as cast members on his show.
Its so cool that this has a bunch of up and coming actors too like finn, the guy from the fabelmans, and rachel sennott from bodies bodies bodies, it kinda reflects how the ppl on snl were just starting out at the time
I'm glad they went that route. Jason Reitman is really good at getting excellent performances out of younger actors.
I saw The Fabelmans, and had no idea that was the same guy. However, every single SNL cast member can do a better impression of Lorne Michaels than this guy.
I was thinking the same thing!!! The young cast looks terrific. And add Cooper Hoffman ( who was FANTASTIC in LicoricePizza ) to that list! His dad would be/is so proud!!!
This will be fun to watch. I was a young kid when I first watched SNL with the original cast. RIP Gilda, Belushi, and all the other brilliant comedians we've lost on that show. Long live SNL.

The actor's name is Lamorne Morris. (Surprisingly no relation) He's the dude from New Girl
SNL has incredibly racist roots. Everyone forgets that because Kenan has broken all the glass ceilings. But blacks were an afterthought to Lorne. 49 years later, the trailer opens with 1975,not 74
I think like any institution, the relevancy ebbs and flows. The handoff from Lorne Michaels to whomever takes over will be critical. It would be kindof cool for someone almost inappropriately young (mid 20's) to take over and gamble on whether it can recapture the same upstart attention it got initially.

The meta joke, for anyone who missed it, is that the trailer (and story) is referencing the plot and first trailer for Danny Boyle's Steve Jobs. The two leads arguing intercut with scenes of problems arising moments before a big live show. Promises of how if executed, it will transform culture. Even the crescendoing bass beat matches the foot thumping crescendo! Wild stuff.
Very happy I wasn’t the only who thought this
Jason Reitman was clearly watching a lot of Aaron Sorkin before making this.

@robertfrenay4078 Homage is an age old technique in filmmaking, but the line between homage and ripping off isn't clear, and arguably there isn't a difference. It just matters if the material is good on its own or not

Saw this on Netflix. (Does anyone actually go to movie theaters anymore?) The visual style is very much like _Birdman_ (2014). I enjoyed seeing this. I was in the 11th grade in 1975 when the first SNL aired. My little troop of friends got together every Saturday night to watch this show. We loved it. It was live. It was different. It was cool. This movie captures some of that magic - but it also reveals what we all know about aspiring performers. Most of them are fragile, manic-depressive, passive-aggressive, bi-polar mental cases. And therein lies the genius. Watching this movie is like being trapped on a bus full of high school drama students going to a local theater competition with the other schools. That is, one life crisis after another. This way of telling the story is a bit tiresome - but it does have land several good laughs along the way. Also, I think J.K. Simmons as Milton Berle is perfect. He really nailed that role. This movie celebrates nostalgia. Of course, you're mileage may vary.
The cast is the best part of this film! EVERYBODY LOOKS OR SOUNDS JUST LIKE THE CHARACTERS THEY ARE PLAYING!!
