  • Friendly Review on the Netgear Orbi (amzn.to/2oSID88) explaining VLAN (Virtual Local Area Networks) and Bridging as well as a tutorial on how to setup on the Netgear Orbi. Easy to understand illustrations are shown with a brief description.
Netgear added the VLAN/Bridging Setting to the Orbi in early 2017 with Firmware Version 1.5.0.12 ( • Nergear Orbi Firmware ... ). Most people won't need to use it, but it is great for advanced users or those who need it to get their devices to function properly.

This video is like saying "I'll show you how to change your motor oil". Then you go and pop the hood, show us where the oil dipstick is, show us how to check the levels, show us how to unscrew the cap, put the bottles of oil on the engine block and say "thats how you change the oil". You didn't go over configuring the ip adddresses on the new vlan or even how to get to it. The only other video out there has some guy going over the LAN settings in advanced mode and I can't get LAN2 to show up like he has.

It would be helpful if you can explain what network settings need to change on the devices connected to the VLAN.

Can you firewall between the VLANS so they can't speak to each other? Not looking for IOT devices to have access to my main network.

What you explain is obvious, but examples of and why would be even more helpful

To add to Jeff K.'s question, my question is once vlans are created, what network will the wifi be assigned to, if any?

I am considering getting the Orbi. Can I add a VLAN for my WiFi security cameras? Does the port selection mean it has to be physically plugged in?

Because we have an internet device that is a modem &
    router:
    1. Download Orbi App to your iPhone / iPad and connect
    2. Turn off Wi-Fi on the modem’s wireless setting (call spectrum to disable) a. Power off and then power up modem
    3. Connect modem to Orbi router using the Orbi ether net cablePush the power on button that’s on the back
    4. Go to www.orbi.login.com (computer or mobile device)
    5. Enter Orbi default user name “admin” and “password” a. Orbi default SSID and password is on the router
    6. Select the Advance tab
    7. Select Router / AP Mode
    8. Select AP Mode
    9. Select dynamic
    10. Click Apply a. Note: after you click apply the device will change to a new IP assigned by your existing router, therefore the web page might not be available. Please close and restart web browser.
    11. Once Orbi has finished applying the setting. Connect to Wi-Fi and log back in
    12. Setup the Satellite a. It boots with a white light. If the satellite has a strong connection the light will go solid blue for 3 minutes and then it will
    turn off.
    b. If the connection is weak the light will glow amber for 3 minutes and then turn off. Recommendation is to move the
    Satellite closer to the router.
    c. If the satellite fails to connect to the router you will see a persistent magenta light that will not turn off. The Satellite must be moved closer to the router.
    i. If you continue to get a magenta light and you already
changed the location of the satellite, you must press the sync button on the back of the router and the satellite and repeat the process until you get a blue light.
    13. Download Orbi app to your iPhone and connect a. Can personalize name, admin password, & security questions

Hi, You have went into a lot more advanced topics on the ORBI then other reviewers, Keep up the good work... I have a question I cannot find a answer too? I bet you can tell me... My Demark for my DSL modem is on the wrong side of my remodeled house and I cannot get a Cat 5e Cable to the other side of my network. I have a Cat 5e cable running across the living room floor, I am tired of people tripping over it. My network is 1GB with switches, cannot use power line adapters to bridge this 20' gap. what is the throughput on the Ethernet ports on the ORBI? I keep reading about the 3rd propriety channel between the Router & Repeater? Can I plug half of my network into the Ethernet Port on the Router and the other half of my network to the Repeater and expect good throughput? How close to 1GB? I transfer GB's of data to a NAS, Speed is very important... Thanks Jeff

I wonder if they removed this option, I'm running version V2.2.1.210 but don't seem to have the vlan option in the menu, any one else experiencing this issue?

@@jamestford Thanks for the info. I was trying to figure that out myself. I am quite disappointed that they don't offer VLAN functionality anymore. It seems like something pretty standard in 2019...

Apparently, it’s only available as a feature for users in Singapore and Malaysia at this time. Why? Who knows. Annoyed by all the limitations Orbi seems to be imposing.

Paul first let me say thank you for such informative videos, great stuff! Can you help me understand what vlan and bridging does? So let's say I have a group of computers I don't want to communicate with another set of computers. Do I put one group on a workstation name and the other on a different workstation name? This way they can't communicate with each other? How does that differ from vlan and what is bridging?

Good video, thank you. But what is with the background music? Can't people focus on one topic for 4.5 mins wihout listening to some randon music selected by some random guy? So tired of everyone sharing their crappy music on their videos. Yet, good video and good content. Keep them coming pls but hold the crappy music. I will give a thumbs up. Will subscribe in the future if the music is removed.

You lost me at “switch” I have isp-modem-router. No switch... what is a switch?

    • @downloadableskills
      @downloadableskills 6 лет назад

adrian97c every device that can access a network has a Mac address hard coded onto the device. Switches use these Mac address to direct traffic. a router uses up addresses to do the same thing. your isp gateway (what most people call a modem) is actually a combo router/switch/modem
