  • In this video I’m providing a detailed review of the Netgear Orbi. I include info about the Orbi system as well as why I am replacing my current Netgear X6 Nighthawk AC3200. I also discuss why I didn’t elect to go with a larger router or an extender. I explain the basics of a mesh system and share before and after results.
    UPDATE:
    Here is the firmware update error and solution

    Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video. I've been contemplating getting a mesh system for our home and with Apple's recent exit from the router business, the Orbi is the solution I am considering. Again, thanks!

    Thank you for your detailed review. I also bought the Orbi and I'm IN LOVE WITH IT!!!!!! I think this is THE BEST WiFi MESH SYSTEM on the market and I highly recommend it. Before with Apple TimeCapsule, the internet speed was 20-30 meg/sec in far areas from the router but now with Orbi, I get >90 meg/sec download and upload speed everywhere!!!! Even in the garage!!! Simply THE BEST! The other good thing about the Orbi is that both router and satellite have 4 ethernet ports which is very useful.

    • @TechGearTalk

    Great review. I purchased the Orbi system after watching your video and am very happy with it's performance. Not only did it improve and simplify the wifi inside my home, it also provides a strong wifi signal inside my detached garage ! I'm able to run my security cameras at full 1080p without the intermittent dropped signals that I had in the past. Also like the fact that I am able to connect all my wireless devices to one network , instead of the 3 networks associated with my previous router and range extender. Thanks for your well crafted review and advice.

      Very happy with the Nestcams ! I use them as outdoor surveillance cams, but have them positioned indoors. They are easy to set up, much like the Orbi, and the picture quality is excellent. The Nestcam app is also very useful, easy to navigate and reliable. I just purchased a pair of the outdoor nestcams and plan to install them in the spring. The specs appear to be the same as the indoor cams, except that they are weatherproof. Great product !

    Both very helpful videos. I had the same problem. We live in a house from 1910 and it's just shy of6,000 square feet. Old house three story big thick walls lots of doors and twists and turns. Just bought the orbi system with two satellites. Had no problems with the install. It was pretty much plug and play. No problems with firmware/updates. It took a few tries for the router to link with the satellites but I figured that would b the case. I followed the instructions exactly on the quick setup guide. Once I got the system working I then played with the best location for the satellites. I moved them around to get the best signal. So far so good!! I can finally stream Netflix in the basement! My only critique is that I needed a guest network but nowhere in the setup or packaging did it say I could. I had to go online to find that out.

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  7 лет назад

      Thanks for watching and I'm glad it's working out well for you like it is for me. I think what happened was that they didn't have the guest network available when the Orbi was released so it wasn't included in the documentation. I think it was a few months after I got mine that they announced it. I wonder if it's in the docs now. Streaming everywhere is so nice isn't it?

    This is actually a very good video, and Orbi is the future router I'm going to buy for my new house, this is a very good example for me to review. Compare to the traditional one router, this hive network Netgear Orbi could better cover a two floor or even 3 floor house.
    I wish that the set-up for Orbi and the router configuring webpage could be showed in the video would be great!

    Thank you for the video. I have been debating on getting the Orbi for some time now. I have a very strong connection throughout my house with my current router, when I play an online game and stream netflix on my TV my ping on the online game increases significantly. My internet speed is 200mbps. Will this device allow me to connect multiple devices without sacrificing the ping when playing online? Also, am I allowed to choose whether to connect to 2.4 or 5ghz? I'd like to use the 5ghz exclusively for my online gaming and everything else 2.4ghz. Thanks and great video

    Loving my Orbi as well. On thing I do love is I have the satellite Orbi located at my entertainment center. I'm utilizing the 4 Ethernet ports on the satellite for my Xbox, PS4, Roku and 4K Firetv. This works fantastic and cuts down on wifi signal pollution. I have Xfinity 300mbps DL/30mbps UL. Average data speeds on any device on the downstairs satellite is 225mbps! My old router was the Netgear X8 that had the 2.4Ghz radios fail twice on 2 different ones. Thank God for BB warranty and allowing me to use that money for an upgrade to Orbi!!

      +Mike C. That's awesome!! So jealous of your Xfinity 300/30.... curious, how far is your satellite from the router?

      My router (the base Orbi) is upstairs. It's definitely not line of site. If you go straight up on my living room wall 13ft (My 2 story house has an open balcony that looks down to the open living room) then to the left 21ft. So about 34ft +/-.
      One other thing I noticed setting it up yesterday on the setup menu I had to place a check mark to turn on beam forming and MU-MIMMO. It was in small print(with check boxes) in the left bottom of one of the setup screens. So folks need to make sure to do that. Great review you did on the Orbi!👍

    • @TechGearTalk

      Thanks Mike! For those of you who are reading this comment, log into your Orbi (orbilogin.net) then pick the ADVANCED tab at the top, then go to ADVANCED SETUP (left sidebar) and select WIRELESS SETTINGS. You will see 2 options at the bottom "Enable implicit beamforming...." and "Enable MU-MIMO". Mine were checked already, but you can go and make sure yours are as well.
      Thanks for sharing that Mike!

      Tech Gear Talk a few other observations to bring light to. 1. Since this is a dual band router (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz) the 2.4 band has better range and penetration through walls etc. The downside of this is that 2.4 is band limited thus slower speeds. Another negative to 2.4 is your device will want to hang on or revert to 2.4. If you have older laptop or other devices 2.4 will be the only band they will work on! If you have newer devices that are capable of 5Ghz band and reach a certain signal level threshold the device will go back to 2.4.
      2. To remedy the above issue you can do to things. One if all your devices are capable of 5Ghz disable the 2.4Ghz band in the menu and you will always get the higher data speeds. Or do as I did, go into the setup menu and reduce the 2.4Ghz power level to 50%. This helps for me to stay on the 5Ghz better!
      I would love if Netgear gave us the option to have 2 separate SSIDs one for 2.4Ghz and one for 5Ghz. This would make this router setup a 10!!

    Awesome video! Just picked up My Orbi wifi system and I now have a reliable connection to my internet everywhere in my home (3000+ sq ft, not including basement). I too have tried many routers: Asus AC 1700 & 1900, Linksys WRT AC1900 & AC3200, and the most recent over the top Asus AC5300 and still encountered dead spots. Almost everywhere now I'm getting almost full speed except one of the bedrooms which is the farthest from the router and the satellite, it's getting about half the speed but still better than dropping out. I'm going to pick up a satellite once netgear sells them individually.

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  7 лет назад

      Thanks for watching and the complement. Just like you, I knew in the back of my mind that even if my current setup of router + 1 satellite ended up not giving me the results I wanted I would just get another satellite. Glad to hear that it's working well for you. If you do end up getting another satellite please come back and tell me how that worked out.

    • @aalberto4961

      Tech Gear Talk out of curiosity I went out and bought a linksys velop 3 pack system to compare the two. The linksys was very clunky to set up requiring a few resets. Also, I noticed that the velop was a bit slower compared to the netgear orbi was giving me at same locations. After a few days I returned the velop and am sticking with the orbi. In 6-8 months it will be possible that netgear and other major manufacturers will come up with better mesh systems to replace these 1st generation mesh wifi systems; but one thing is for sure, I will not go back to a single wifi router solution again.

    • @aalberto4961
      @aalberto4961 6 лет назад

      Yes of course. It has been about a year and there's nothing out there currently that is better IMO. I've had almost no issues except for a couple of times during the year I needed to do hard reset because the satellite would not reconnect back to the main hub.

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  6 лет назад

      I've had to do that a few times here an there. I use the app now so I don't have to go to the satellite, but I guess if they don't reconnect it may not work.

    Thanks for the video! Great work and both the Orbi review content and production value was top notch. I'm crossing my fingers that the Orbi helps our household out.
    The wifi holy grail has always been out of reach and I've spent at least a thousand dollars on different solutions over the years. I'm now pushing the network through my coax cable (using a technology called MoCA) and using 3 different Ubiquity Unifi AP's to try and put together a seamless network. I still need to create different SSIDs so that I can override device/AP handoffs that don't happen when they should (eg. the iPad remains connected to the downstairs AP even when you walk upstairs and there's another AP just feet away.)
    If the Orbi can solve this and other issues, it'll be easily worth the cost. Fwiw, Costco has another deal for the Orbi router plus two satellites for 499. Not sure if that will be needed in my case, given your results, but I thought I'd put it out there for others.
    PS. What camera and mic setup did you use for the interview/couch shot? Everything in the video looked amazing, from the steady cam to great lighting. My OCD was killing me with the phone's battery level during the old router tests ;)

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  7 лет назад

      Chris, thanks for watching and for the compliments; much appreciated.
      I'm right there with you regarding past wifi solutions. I tried various wireless AP configuration and they were always clunky which is why for the past year and a half I just lived with bad signal and used my cellphone data is certain areas. The whole handoff issue is just so frustrating.
      The Orbi solved that issue and as a bonus my whole back yard still has coverage (which it did with the X6)
      Sounds like a good deal at Costco if you do need the 3, how big is the house?
      I used a 5DMKIII and an ME66.
      Your comment about the phone battery CRACKED ME UP!!! I was thinking the same thing as it was going on. Why didn't I just charge it beforehand?

    great review, Thanks. Would love it if you would do a comparison between the Netgear orbi and the new Google Wi-Fi setup. Everyone is raving about the Google Wi-Fi for the large area it can cover, but I understand these speeds are not very good and are limited. Of course it's cheaper than the Netgear orbi and easier for most folks. I would love to see a detailed comparison as throughput and signal strength is most important to me.

    Thank you for your video, it's certainly got me thinking about this product. Can you tell me what's your PS4 like with the Orbi? Does it lag at all in multiplayer and does it download games etc fast? Does it have open NAT with the Orbi system? Thanks.

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  7 лет назад

      Thanks for watching Mark. Our PS4 is now killer. Before the Orbi we had pretty much no connection. We would have to take the PS4 upstairs to download games. Multiplayer or any online games were not even an option. Now we're getting about 95% signal strength wirelessly on the PS4 (which for us is 48Mbps down and 5.2 Mbps up), even though it is as far away form the router as possible in our house. The satellite is about 30 feet away from the PS4. Depending on your configuration, you might even be able to plug the PS4 directly into the Satellite (a little hard to help without knowing your exact setup). What are your download/upload speeds right now? What is your setup like?

    Loved the review! I also was having issue covering my whole house with my D-Link-890L so I opted for the mess wifi technology and bought myself the Orbi. So far I too see a huge improvement.
    My only question... I was wondering if there is a way to have the Netgear Orbi Router have both SSID (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) transmitted seperately. I would love to have the choice to connect each of my devices to either the 2.4 GHz band or the 5 GHz. I looked in the settings page of the router and have yet found a way to do that. Thought it would be such a basic feature since my previous two older routers did that.
    Anyways, I hope you undertand my question, and maybe you have an answer (or someone else reading this comment). It would be greatly appreciated.
    Loved your other videos too, you've got a new sub!
    Thanks again!

      Hi Dana. Thank for the feedback! I am definitely still using the Orbi and really like it. The channels are not separated, it's one network so I can't really tell what is being used. However, the speed is awesome everywhere in the house. Since the review, I've switched to Fiber so it's even better.

    Thanks for the review. I also live in an old (wooden) house (about 85 square meters per floor). I'm not sure what old wooden houses in the US are like, but here in Norway they used to put clay in the space between the floors as insulation and fire proofing. This kills WiFi. Right now I have an AC3200 tri-band router on the ground floor with an extender in the basement and an extender on the 1st floor. Coverage without extenders is very bad even on parts of the ground floor. Basement and 1st floor is pretty much useless if you move around. As far as I can see I'd have to place both Orbis on the ground floor, but I can't see any reason that that would give me any better signal strength in the basement or on the 1st floor than what the AC3200 can give me, they use the same kind of radios. Horizontal coverage is not a big issue, but vertical is. Your thoughts? Best regards from Norway.

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks! Quick question. Are the extenders doing the job? Are they broadcasting the same or different SSID (network name)?
      I never had any luck with extenders. The signal was always weak, and it was a different network. The Orbi worked great for me because it created a single network that now covers 4 floors. There is also no signal degradation like with my extenders. Of course the signal gets a little weaker when I move far away from the router or satellite (example when I go outside of the house) but inside it's really amazing coverage. If I needed to, I could get another satellite but there is absolutely no need in my case.

    I think what would have made it better is having before and after results showing your Speedtest readings from the same room. Even if you could have just presented it as a screenshot of en Excel spreadsheet page, listing the rooms, then before speed for each room, after speed and another column to show speed change +/-.

      I currently use an Arris modem. The setup you are suggesting will work. You'll need to put one of the devices in bridge modem, essentially choosing which you want to use as the router. Unless there is a particular feature you like about the Arris as a router, I would let the Orbi act as the router. Thanks for watching (and hopefully subscribing)

    It would kinda be nice if you could draw a map of the house and where the Orbi's went. Just to have an idea. Say you ended up not using the nighthawk after all? Would it be possible to keep it in the network if you needed to cover a small part that missed the coverage?

    Excellent review, just wondering what material your upper floors are made of? Mine are concrete and steel beams which dulls the WiFi significantly even directly below. Orbi is attractive but concerned whether it would be effective in my situation.

      The floors are made of concrete and steel mesh (with hardwood on top) in most of the house. The exterior walls are brick and stucco. I was using Time Warner Cable which was promising up to 60 mbps. I can't imagine you need to change your modem. The best way to test that is run a speed test while wired to the modem/router (not using wifi). That will give you the speed that is coming in. If that's at 75 then you don't need to worry about anything else, the Orbi will take care of the coverage. Does that make sense?

      There is no Coaxial input for the Orbi. I use a modem (from ATT - used to be from Comcast) then I connect that to the Orbi. I don't know about the Disney Circle - I'd give Netgear a quick call to make sure.
      As far as coverage, it's top notch, that I can for sure vouch for.

    My router output connection is at the back of my house. Needed a really good router to reach the front, so I got Had a linksys ac5400 and also got a netgear extender for connection towards the front. It was honestly decent in the front, great connection in the back since the router was located there and it is one of the higher end models.
    Yeah . . . it was kind of inconvenient for the output to be behind the house, but thats how the house was setup and didn't want to bother doing all the work to move the output connection.
    Actually just installed the ORBI, I have to say, it works just as well as the linksys ac5400 in terms of internet speed, this opinion is just based off of how I test internet speed, by just watching a video online and skipping parts to see if it loads quickly.
    Im sure the linksys ac5400 is more for high internet speed with multiple devices connected. For the ORBI on the other hand, just got it, the connection is far better in the front of the house now with the router and 2 other of it's extenders(satellites), but not sure how it will do with multiple devices vs. internet speed.
    I highly recommend the ORBI if you need to be connected to wi-fi at every part of your home.
    We currently have the ORBI with the the primary router and the extenders, which they call satellites, i have no idea why.
    Overall, hoping this is the last router i'll have to get in a while.

      Hi Rolf, thanks for the detailed comment. I have multiple devices connected (2 smart tvs, 2 desktops, a laptop, an ipad and 4 iphones) and we have no problem. Of course we have a limit of 50Mbps from our provider, so we can't exceed that, but that's not a limitation on the Orbi side. At this point that is the fastest option.
      Glad it's working well for you too!

    Thanks so much for your video. I can't agree more with what you said in the first part, here in Saudi Arabia we have a much bigger house then what you have in US, and due the high degree weather in summer our wifi routers always struggles with the - thick - walls ,and i struggled with a bunch of "high end" access points and repeaters, I've got 200mb Internet speed on my main router but with these repeaters i couldn't get more than 20mb, it's really frustrating. I was hoping that the Netgear Orbi will solve these issues for me but i just can get my hopes so high, but after watching your experience with the router i think it will be the final and best solution for the wireless extending issues.
    Although, Google WiFi keep comes to my mind every time when i think of the Netgear Orbi, specially that it comes as three hubs for 299$, also i have Google OnHub now so that i can use it as a fourth hub according to CNET

    Can anyone advise me if this replaces the Optus router/modem that came with my package? is it a case of unplugging that one and plugging this in or does some setting on the router/modem I have need changing? Im confused.

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  5 лет назад

      Hi Gerry. For me, it did not replace the model, you still need one of those. This plugs into the modem and then creates the mesh network. For "best results" they tell you to turn wi-fi on your router/modem since you won't be using it.

      As long as the phone is connected to the modem/router you should have no issues. Otherwise, you may need to change a setting on the Orbi.

    Is it possible to connect these Orbit Satellites to other routers rather than a Netgear one?

      No, but you can physically connect the router to another router and only use the Orbi system for your WiFi, but still use your router for other functions.

    if you changed the dhcp settings and what not, could you hook up the router and satellite with an Ethernet cable? I'd love it if you could show off the firmware.

      Why would you want to do that? Is it too far from the base?

    • @smorinator
      @smorinator 5 лет назад

      I'm just curious if its capable as all. I have two routers at home hooked together by their switchports with a powerline ethernet adapter. This allows one of the routers to act like an access point rather than a router. You just have to make sure they both have the same network name, password, and that the router that is acting as the access point has its dhcp disabled and ip addess staticlly assigned. The powerline ethernet adapter allows me to have the benefit of a cabled connection between router and access point without the detriment of running actual cables through the walls.

      Nice. How’s the performance? Honestly, for me, wireless is good enough. Now that I have fiber, I’m still getting ~260 up and down even at the other end of the house.

      It preforms quite good compared to only having one router. The only trouble is sometimes my phone won't roam as aggressively as i'd like. As far as I know there's no pretty way to increase the roaming aggressiveness on android.

      You are totally right. The router is on the second floor at one end of the house and the satellite is on the first floor in the middle of the house. If you look at the walkthrough (starts at 1:16) and then pause it at 1:24 (right after I come down the stairs) you will see the Orbi satellite on the left side on a wooden chest. it's probably about 60 feet (a little over 18 meters) away if there was direct line of sight.
      Thanks for watching. I will do an update in about a week. I have not encountered any issues to this point. I still absolutely love it. I bought the Orbi from Costco for my 2k sq. ft. home. 1 router and 2 satellites, and we still have problems streaming video - movies, youtube, etc. I can't figure out the problem. Router is upstairs where the 4 bdrms are; Satellite 1 is probably 25 ft away in the hallway; Satellite 2 is downstairs, directly below the Router (no brick in my house), and we still get buffering delays and interruptions with every device, be it phone, smart tv, or Roku. Do you have any suggestions?

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  7 лет назад

      Hmmm, you shouldn't have any issues, that is actually more than you need. Have you run a speed test while wired to the router? go to a Speed Test website and then give me your results here. Let's start there.

    • @PG-kp3tz
      @PG-kp3tz 7 лет назад

      Thank you for the quick response; I'm sorry it took me some time to get back to you with answers. I ran several speed tests. The highest download speed I got was 1.41, and the highest upload result .36. (Admittedly embarrassing.) We've been hanging on to our ATT internet modem for years. Is that the problem? Can I just buy a new and improved one to correct the issue? Thanks for the help.

    • @PG-kp3tz
      @PG-kp3tz 7 лет назад

      I'm sorry. You must've gotten annoyed because I asked for your help and then took so long to respond. I would still appreciate your input. Maybe I misunderstood what the Orbi system was all about? I don't know. I'm at a loss. Thanks.

    • @TechGearTalk
      @TechGearTalk  7 лет назад

      Hi Penny. Sorry, I somehow missed your last comment. If your download speed is at 1.41 when you are wired to the router then your problem is right there. Nothing to be embarrassed about but do you know how much bandwidth you are paying for? My first call would be to ATT to find out what speed you are supposed to have at your house.
      The Orbi can't increase the speed ATT is bringing into your house, but it will greatly help with the coverage of your network so that your whole house is covered.
      I don't know of ANY high speed internet plans that only give you 1.41 Mbps. Let me know what you find out form ATT and if you don't get a response from me in a day or 2 always leave another comment as a reminder.

    • @PG-kp3tz
      @PG-kp3tz 7 лет назад

      I don't think I was "wired" to the router. I stood next to the satellite with my phone, and ran the speed test that way. I will try again, if my kid can show me how to wire my phone to router. Also, I don't know how much bandwidth I'm paying for. I'll check into these things and get back to you. Thanks.
