    Yes, you are exactly correct, the orbi system setup as star topology (not full mesh) is amazing... definitely beats most other competition. There are a couple settings to be wary of that I cannot remember off hand (look up settings you aren’t sure about to get general consensus if it is good or bad to enable in its current state/firmware version, especially if you are noticing subpar performance).
    One thing I really like about these also is that the web admin interface is fast in page refresh and settings changes. Some, even modern ones, are god-awful slow, which is extremely frustrating.
    I have been so impressed as to recommend and install these in the houses of 4 other friends and family, and they have worked flawlessly and problem-free.... the first among them 2 years ago.

    Peyton, Nice review, easy to watch and listen to. Thanks.
    The Orbi system is great! I set mine up about two weeks ago and it's been perfect - fast!
    Setup was mostly automatic, and does NOT require a vendor account or constant connection to the Google Mothership. (There was NO REASON Google had to do that, other than to monitor and pry into your internet usage patterns.)
    My home is a very long ranch style house which got spotty reception in the far end rooms with a high-end router. Wifi extenders helped, but just like the Google "mesh" system, the extended signal is only 1/2 speed. The Orbi system gives FULL speed from both the router and satellite.
    BTW, the LED complaint you had is simple -- you can turn on/off the multicolored lights from the web based setup page. Default is off, as you found out.

    Hey Peyton, good review. Would like to know if it is worth buying / having this router now (Nov 2021), considering that it is a three year old model. Wouldn't I be better off buying one of those AX1800 or so capable models which Netgear offers under its Nighthawk range of WiFi6 Routers ? I must admit I had an unpleasant experience with an RAX10 router from Netgear, and when I opted to return it and sought a refund, just to assuage me they have offered to replace my RAX10 with the RBK50 router, at no extra charge. Would like your view on whether it is worth the trade off, and if I will be able to use the Orbi RBK50 Router for the next couple of years without worrying about its redundancy (technology wise). Thank you.

    Thank you for your review and thank you for showing the speed test result for a wired connection to a satellite! That has been my main concern since I've an original PS4 which can only connect to the 2.4Ghz wireless band which really really sucks for gaming online. One question, I've gigabit internet with Xfinity can I expect the same +400Mbps performance as yours via a wired connection with a satellite?

    Peyton, thank you for the great reviews. I desperately need a new router and was looking at the Orbi AX6000 RBK852. Then I read your review and I was troubled by a few things like the fact that you can't hide the SSID and you don't have a USB port on the RBK852. As you suggested, I went back and watched your video on the RBK 50 and it looks fine. I have an old 4400sq ft house that has 3 large floors. My computer sits on one side of the main floor and the entertainment center is 50 feet away on the main floor. My husband has an office in the basement and there are bedrooms upstairs. Will the main floor router cover that area? Or would I need to buy an extra RBS50 satellite and put one satellite upstairs and one satellite in the basement? I see that the standalone RBS50 satellite costs about $250. I was hoping that the standard RBK 50 package that has a router and 1 satellite would be enough to cover the house, what do you think? Thank you!

    Hey there!
    I got 2 main q s:
    1. Let's say: from the provider modem-->rj cable -->the main orbi router. Can i continue with another rj cable (inserted into the router) to the satellite? Essentially to connect them through internet cable? If so does the back haul still work? Also can i connect a pc to the satellite (wich is already wired to the main orbi) ?
    2. I've heard numerous complaints about updates that literally guts the user experience. Signal drop outs, lower speeds.
    Do u still use this mesh or ud u recommend smth else?

    • @PeytonB
      @PeytonB  5 лет назад

      1) Yes, you can use Ethernet as the backhaul just as you described.
      2) Yes, I still use the Orbi, and there’s a workaround way to disable automatic updates which I would strongly recommend you do. If you decide to get the Netgear Orbi, send me an email and I’ll let you know which firmware version I recommend for the best stability, as well as how to disable automatic updates.

    So you mention seeing which clients are connected to which AP, can you do that with the web interface since you mentioned that you can't see it in the app?
    I have Google Wifi and also want to know which devices are connected to which ap, since I've noticed that some of my devices will (for some God awful reason) be connected to an ap across the house, and getting poor performance even though they are in the same room as an a different AP..
    I'd like to see this get better by moving to Orbi. Have you noticed devices connecting to the wrong ap with Orbi?

    • @PeytonB
      @PeytonB  6 лет назад +2

      Yes, in the web interface you can see which AP each client connects to.
      Based on my experience, the Orbi does a pretty good job of making sure devices are connected to the appropriate AP. I find it pretty aggressive; it will start the handoff process not long after the client device is within better signal strength of another AP. One minor issue is that I noticed a slight lapse in network usability during the handoff process, but functionality comes back very quickly (maybe 10 seconds). Here’s an example of what I mean by that: My phone will be connected to the Orbi upstairs. I’ll walk downstairs, and my phone will start switching to the basement Orbi before I get to the bottom step. I’ll open the Home app on my iPhone to turn a basement light on, but my phone won’t be fully connected for another few seconds, so I’m unable to turn the light on right away. The same is true if I were to try to access something over the internet.
      Hope that helps.

    • @josharmour
      @josharmour 6 лет назад

      This handoff is what seems to be missing from my Google Wifi experience. I'll often be downstairs on the opposite side of the house from my master bedroom wifi access point and notice my phone is connected to the master bedroom wifi point. IN THE SAME ROOM AS THE LIVING ROOM AP. It just never gets moved to the AP in the same room as it. As a result, I'm getting half the signal I'd get from the AP in the same room. It's often an hour or so after I have been sitting there that I notice it's still connected upstairs.
      Note, I probably have too much overlapping coverage in my house. I have a 3k sq ft house with 3 Google Wifi's in it.

      That sounds familiar to problems I’ve experienced. For some odd reason, when I have my PS4 to the satellite via Ethernet, the satellite would have connection issues to the main router, which would then cut out any connection that is transmitting through the satellite (so games would get disconnected).
      I decided to connect my PS4 via WiFi, and I haven’t had any issues since. It may seem counterintuitive, but choosing WiFi over Ethernet might be the better option for gaming. I would recommend giving that a try.

      No, you will only get up to the speed you pay for, no matter what router you have. This router may help with your lag issues, though.

      Question. Is this its own wifi? Do i still have to pay monthly for example to spectrum? Or do i still make payments to a provider??

    People get tons of disconnect issue after couple months use. go to check Netgear website and see how many people complain about it.

    • @PeytonB
      @PeytonB  6 лет назад +7

      I haven’t had disconnection issues. The routers automatically update, which has lead to problems. One auto-update made my HomeKit devices stop working properly; however, after updating to a beta firmware, that problem has been resolved. That’s the only issue I’ve had with this router.

      The Orbi runs fine for about six months and then it gets hit with updates and becomes the worst investment you have ever made. I have even been sent a replacement which is worse. If you can get your money back do it now, you will be happy you did!

    This mesh system is trash, yes it has range I'll give it that much, but extremely inconsistent. Go with something else, one big issue for me is the fact that everything connects to the router and not what devices are closest to the router or satellite. Even the app is terrible I'll save you the trouble, but don't say I didn't warn you. I wish I never bought this system and could return it.

    Don't buy one under any circumstances if you use iPhones because 75% of websites will be unreachable with you being asked for a password to access them. I just paid NZD670 and now have to use mobile data to access websites that need a password, it's an absolute disgrace for Netgear to put such a piece of trash on the market.
