I like this thinking "If you're going to do something good... may as well over do it". Great approach when it comes to tech. I call that "future proofing". Buy it once... buy more than you need, and you don't need to keep upgrading later. Now you're set when you buy your NEXT mansion! Buying mine today.
My equipment was 8+ years old. I was getting about 40 Mbps DL. I installed the Orbi AC3000 system with three satellites. With just this new equipment my DL increased to just shy of 300 Mbps all over the house and in my detached shop. That's wireless too. I've since wired my satellites back to the router. I'm not DL'ing any faster but I like having the wired connection. I give Orbi two big thumbs up.
I have base and just 1 satellite unit in 3,000 sqft home and speeds are awesome! Hell, I am doing bbq now outside, good 100 ft from the nearest unit and can still watch youtube video without any delays whatsoever!
My system's MAIN router is a Asus AC-RT66U and a TP-Link JetStream 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet L2 Managed Switch and a Netgear powerline AP. If my system wasn't already performing well, this might make a nice upgrade/replacement. Looks like it would be perfect for a new home or large residence. Before these "mesh" devices were on the market, I ended up just using a NETGEAR PowerLINE 1000 Mbps WiFi, 802.11ac adapter. If you couldn't watch youtube or access your wifi from 100ft, I have to ask, what did you have before? I can more 100ft plus that away from my device and I have an excellent connection. Heck, my next door neighbor has commented he can see my signal is stronger from his bedroom which is at least 150ft away from my router stronger then his own wifi router (he's using the supplied wifi signal from his comcast device). I've never had a router as good as the Asus router I currently have and I've had everything from U.S. robotics to dlink to netgear to belkin and even a tplink (for about 3 days). I'm waiting for the ASUS ROG AC5300 to hit the market this summer then I'm going to upgrade because it has a lot of features I could make use of and it has a bigger footprint which might let me dump the AP. Think it's going to be around 400. I have a lot of devices that connect now (20+ at any giving time) and that's 5 roku's, 2 smart tvs and a hose of gaming systems, laptops, IOT's and phones. I'm ether lucky as crap or I got the right router 4 years ago.
I have a ps4 hardwired in a satellite getting 120 down 15 up, use to get 6 down .5 up on a range extender. I am very happy with orbi, and the range outside the house is flawless along with the speed.
We just got the 2 units (ac3000) yesterday and heard about the firmware updates (on earlier units). - in our case we literally unboxed, plugged into power, plugged in modem. Didn't even have to turn power on - soon as we plugged in they powered up and did their thing. That's it. No firmware or fiddling with the Sync button to pair the main router with the satellite. Took about 45 secs to pair. Great product and exceptional coverage both floors all areas of house. 4k Netflix and no buffering. Thanks for the review. We took a chance on this product as we felt it was super expensive (479CAD). Up to this point we'd never tried a "WiFi mesh" system out. We'll never go back to single router.
Nice demo. I bought the Orbi system with one satellite. I have the router set up in my home office (which is at the east side of our house). The satellite is in our family room (center of the house). The house is approximately 2900 sq.ft. So far, very good speeds. One issue though, I just bought a new Netgear CM 600 cable modem. After setting up the cable modem (had to call Comcast even though the modem box advertises no calls necessary), the Orbi router would not recognize the modem. Ended up calling Netgear and eventually had to pay $89.99 for 6 month "warranty" as my 90 day warranty on the Orbi system had ended. That's a lot in my view. I am not a tech. person but relatively tech. savvy. I still needed the help from Netgear.
Thanks for the video. Whenever using more Orbi's than needed in a smaller space as in your situation, my understanding is you should lower the transmit power to reduce the wireless overlap, thus reducing the chance of devices "hanging on" to farther satellites as it does the roaming hand-off. Just my 2 cents.
Hi, I am planning to buy Netgear Orbi but want to make sure if that's the right choice. I will be going for 2 device system[1 main and 1 satellite]. what will be the practical speed if I connect to second orbi through one conceit wall? I have 300 mbps internet plan.
Being tech savvy myself I can honestly say you did a great job with this video. When I tested Orbi RBR50 I was blown away by its performance. Are you using Orbi in router or AP mode? I was a big fan of Untangle UTM for my router and now I am using the new Synology RT2600 AC router installed in the basement so wireless is less then perfect.
Enjoyed all the information. I would be interested to know how well the router alone performed, without the satellites, at those locations compared to your previous router. Our house is three stories, bottom is a basement that walks out to the backyard full of pine trees, and next to a pond. Our eight year old AirPort Extreme decided to give up the ghost. At present we are running a AirPort Express; it was the network extender. As you can imagine we are looking at options.
Satellites are a necessity even if only using 1 for extending your mesh coverage. A 3 story house I think would be ideal with router on floor 2 and Orbi satellites on floors 1 and 3. I can plan on doing a coverage video with main router only but I would expect signal drop off at far reaches of the house similar to old router coverage
Holy crap it's been well over 6 hours and two net support calls but I'm up and running. Speed test wireless is pumping out great speeds. The issue I ran into was basically on setup was interference from xfinity wifi. Factory reset then bridge the network I'm good. A gain thanks for the review
Couple of questions 2600 sq ft home but going to also have security cameras as well so let’s just say 3000 sq ft like in your home. Would 250 mpbs be sufficient for 2 streaming TVs 2 gaming consoles 4-5 security cameras and security system monitoring 13-15 windows and 3 doors or should I upgrade to 1000 mbps all through xfinity? I’m also looking into this orbi system as well but would I need 1 that covers 6k sqft or would the one that covers 3500 sq ft be sufficient. Thanks in advance for the help.
What is your internet plan? 180Mbps down via Wi-Fi in the same room as the Orbi is very slow! I have the cheaper RBK23 version with the small Orbi's and if i'm in the same room as the Orbi i get 500Mbps down
I just purchased Orbi from Costco 3 units , now I get good Wifi speed in every corner of my house , I tried google WiFi , amplifihd nothing come close to Orbi 👍.
Do the satélites pick up the signal wirelessly? To place the router In the Center of the home isn’t that dependent on where your cable is coming through the wall? Or can you plug it in where there is in Ethernet port in the center of the home while having a satellite connected to the modem?
Yes they do. Each satellite just needs power. In my case, I installed the main Orbi where my ISP modem was and the 2 Satellite Orbis throughout the house.
Great review for me as I have the same Router/Range Extender and similar sized house, but being in the UK and over 200 years old (the house) I have a 1 foot thick wall into my lounge which causes hell for any signal.
This was exactly what I was looking for. Multiple levels and rooms in your house, tested it against another known WiFi router, and showed the UI Interface with a setup. Awesome man thank you! Quick Question? Have you used a harddrive with it and how well can you stream movies off that harddrive?
I have not used a HDD with it. I have used it for streaming from Netflix, VUDU both in 4K with no issues at all. I would imagine the speed would be dependent on your HDD speed.
Hi, nice video. Does the orbi router replace the current router. I'm looking to boost my wifi signal out to my man hut outside. I tried to connect a pair of tp link 500mps home plugs which didn't connect. My phone still is still connected to wifi when I am out in the shed so there is signal. Would this be the perfect job to boost signal out to shed and garden or should I go down the route of the ac1900 Extender. I want to put a TV in the shed to stream TV videos etc so. I want a good connection. Any help and knowledge would be fantastic. Many thanks
I have a nighthawk x10. I still like the router, do you think it would be worthwhile to get this orbi and use it in Access point mode? Our wifi is not great right now...
As a tech guy myself, this was a great review! Are you sing both satellites in a mesh (Wireless backhauls)? If not, do you see any difference in speed with or without wires? The reason I ask is because you're getting 200-250Mbs, in my case I have Verizon Fios 930/930 so my bottle neck won't be my ISP it'll be my Wireless AP. I want to know if getting the Orbi, I'll get something close to a wired connection through my LAN port on my PC. Thanks
I am using them as mesh setup (not much difference at all between wireless and wired speeds) My upstairs PC is directly connected to my router/modem and receives 200+
That's why I ask. It looks like you'r getting 250Mbs through your ISP. My download & upload is 930/930, so I want to know if the Orbi stalls out around 400Mbs as my internet won't be the bottle neck, the Orbi will. That's why I'm asking if using the Orbi wireless Mesh is the same as using a wired backhaul? A simple test on your side since your ISP is the bottle neck, is doing a file transfer intranet. Just transfer front your wireless laptop to your wired computer. Thanks
I have a similar setup with my Orbi router upstairs in Office and satellite downstairs in tv viewing area. I had thought about swapping the router/satellite but I only have one coax outlet near a/v rack. Since you can’t use the same coax outlet for DirecTV and TWC Internet there is no way I can do this though.
Do you think this will work in an older home? I just moved into a house built in 1900 and my wifi, I admit I'm using the rented router/modem atm from Charter will be replacing modem today, in two rooms over is terrible for phone, laptop, and roku.
I have a couple SCARs and saw this video... my iPad Pros are somehow sharing an IP address and couldn’t connect to my Arris. I am going to grab one of these today, pushing 6K feet in Lake Tahoe.
Fantastic review and great video thank you so much you really helped me in deciding which system to buy! Not sure if you'll see this but are you still using the same system to this day and how is it working for you?
System is still performing as it did from day 1. so yes. However... in the past I have had experiences with Netgear routers after having them for extended periods of time, like dropping Wi-Fi and loosing performance after firmware updates. Suspecting faulty firmware updates to brick devices so new ones would need purchased.. but that's just the conspiracy theorist in me :)
Doesn't matter where I go in the house my average is 100mbs even when next to the main router, I would expect 200mbs there. Overall at least end to end we have very good internet compared to devolo 500 WiFi Powerlines I have a brick built house and used to average 20mbs . I have the RBK50 system 2 units
So I’m confused. With this unit, you only need to connect one of the units with the router to your modem (AT&T). I have the home pre wired with a panel in the garage where all the cables are fed through. For the satellite Orbi’s do they need to be connected to an Ethernet jack? I have on in the area but, does it connect wirelessly to the main Orbi? If so how with it being the same distance as my phone from the unit does it achieve a better speed?
The Head unit connects to your modem via Ethernet. The satellites only need power. The mesh network provides consistent speeds in all areas of your home... with larger homes there are usually spots where dips low from main source. This creates a mesh network with same speeds throughout.
How were your speeds outside say like on the patio or driveway? We have an outdoor movie screen I set up and I can’t find anything to boost my signal for my Apple TV. Thanks
I have a outdoor TV that connects to a Orbi and it is just as fast. I am no more than 30 feet or so away from a Orbi whether in front or backyard based on my current 3 Orbi system.
DinkGear I have the two orbi system installed. Unfortunately my cable provider modem is installed in our finished basement. I can’t believe I lose so much with that thing going through concrete walls. I wonder if I need a third Orbi installed on our third level where I found a significant decrease in speed. Thoughts?
jason berner The Orbi satellites can now be daisy chained with the newest firmware. Orbi in basement and satellite on each level with daisy chain enabled in settings.
i like your review. I am getting the same Orbi soon. What kind of internet plan were you using in the video? I am using xifinity blast DL speed up to 75 mbps. Also, do you think I need to change my modem as well for the better speed? I am using moto sbg6580 which is modem/wifi router built in the machine. Thank you for the video anyways it helps me a lot!!!
Thank you... I have Xfinity HSD Blast Pro with speeds up to 200mbps. For modem I am using xfinity XB3 / Arris TG1682G which is part of their triple play equipment (phone also) I have my Orbi plugged directly into the gateway device with bridge mode enabled which disables Xfinity's WiFi allowing my Orbi to rule the house
This is probably a dumb question but do i need a wifi provider or just a modem. Basically im confused because you disabled your xfinity service when you plugged it directly into your gateway device and disabled bridge mode.Needless to say Im not tech savy at all so any help would be great
Yes, you will still need a service provider. The Xfinity service I had signed up for (I believe was called triple play) included in gateway has phone, modem and built in dual band 802.11ac Wi-Fi. I just disabled their Wi-Fi basically (Bridge mode) as the Orbi has much better Wi-Fi coverage.
I have had no issues since installation. I keep adding more devices into my network and my ISP periodically keeps increasing my speeds. I know am hitting over 400 Mbps wireless. I will be doing a fup video shortly
I have the same gear u have.... R7000 and matching extender. I run wired to extender and have as separate SSID. Only use extender placed on top floor and get my full 150 mbps speed anywhere in house. Not sure why u are getting such low speeds next to your router.... something doesn’t add up.
My home is 2-story, 4500 sq ft. Internet coming in is 100 Mbps. Is that enough for the RBK53 system, or do I need to upgrade to 250? Also, I'm a little intimidated at having to update firmware before using. Is that fairly simple? THANKS!
I bought Netgear Orbi after watching this review. I used to have CM1000 before getting Arris ab8200- I am still not receiving the 1gb speeds as advertised by Comcast on my iPhone or Mac. What could be the reason?
Would it be possible to test through brick and stone, i did a test at my house and speeds were terrible however when done through plasterboard it was rapid.
@9:10 you mention speed from your ISP to be “about 210 mega BYTES per sec”. It looks like Speedtest shows 187 M’b’ps. That’s mega BITS per sec. so that’d come to around 187/8 MBps. Anyways thanks for the vid: helps me decide on the orbi.
Hi I have a Motorola sbg6782 cable modem, with router/wifi combo.can this orbi still connect with this modem..I have Xfinity Comcast 4 service..how should I hook this up with the orbi? I live in 2 story aprtmnt also! Thanks!!
I have Comcast modem with Voice and I am 58 feet away from my modem router and I get a Speedtest of 24 to 25 MB per second and then it will drop to 6 mbps. if my wife and I are on our iPads at the same time it drastically dropped to 10 to 12 mbps. by myself I have good signal dropped my house with the Comcast modem router I'm hoping the Orbi will illuminate any problems. Any comment
I was in the same situation... Comcast modem with voice... Our main TV was about 50-60 feet away on a different floor and I was getting about 5 - 10MB by itself. I added a range extender and boosted it to 25MB.. Still wasn't enough as it dipped and dropped on 4K streaming. So I added Orbi. The Orbi maintains its speed regardless of how many devices are connected. Now 200MB in TV area. Do a speedtest hardwired. That should be your speed wireless in your entire house after add a Orbi system
can anyone help me please? what if i have a Modem Router (in other words, a router with a built-in modem)? will it work? is it compatible? every instruction or videos are about houses where there is a modem device apart from a different router device. thanks
latest firmware on this orbi ...26 breaks router where wifi connects but says no internet . this happens on not all devices though netgear support on this router sucks be careful before you buy it
TikiShootah lol... far from a mansion. 6000sq ft + would be more like it. Standard netgear nighthawk wifi signal with one repeater very poor at the far end for 4k streaming. Simple solution with a mesh network. BTW... IT Manager for a large telecommunication company.
I see, so tell me, would this solution work on say, a combo router-modem from an ISP? I dont know if i'd get the same functionality as you do, as I have to use their router.
please do one more actual wifi speed test and not internet speed test by downloading Android app called 'WiFi Speed Test' and theirs speed test server on any pc or laptop with gigabit Ethernet port from here bitbucket.org/pzolee/tcpserver/downloads/ and connect it to base unit through Ethernet cable and run speed test on mobile app and share the video. it will check you max wifi speed and not bound to your internet connection speed and online servers.
Curious as to why you would even need a satellite in the same room as the router. Perhaps you had a faulty one as clearly this is not the case. Try Netgear support if you still have it to remedy issue.
I came here looking for the best mesh wifi system. Now I think I need to buy a better looking home. Great review.
Thank you Josh

that 150MB down wireless you get on the xbox1s how close are you to an Orbi? and it is the router or a satellite? thanks
I am closest to he furthest satellite in my house. XBOX1s is maybe 25 feet away from the satelite
are you running wireless xbox connection?
Yes... 2 Xbox Ones both running wireless

Great video, just picked this unit up at Costco for 399.99 (70.00 off right now) setting up tomorrow. Thank you
Good job on the demonstration and review. I'm sold, I'm getting this.
It's great, it looks like it can solve the problem of my second-floor speed of the network. Thank you.

Oh man... sorry to hear that. Probably should have told you that... My Xfinity Bridge is disabled/ Wi-Fi off.
DinkGear yes had to reset 2xs but it's working well now
thanks I just ordered one I can't wait to get it I'm sure it's going to help a lot thanks for your feedback
Have my two unit Orbi hooked into my Fios gigabit service, and I receive 400-500mbps consistently over Wi-Fi.
mattspalace A
Nice I just got gig and was thinking about going for the orbi
Guess I know what I’m upgrading to. Thanks for the great video
Couple of questions 2600 sq ft home but going to also have security cameras as well so let’s just say 3000 sq ft like in your home. thanks for your reply, i guess i will buy the orbi, it was between Orbi and Eero

I have a nighthawk x10. I still like the router, do you think it would be worthwhile to get this orbi and use it in Access point mode? Our wifi is not great right now...
Our Orbis vastly improved the speeds in our house as you can see in the video. I would just run them as designed first, rather than AP
Thanks
I am using them as mesh setup (not much difference at all between wireless and wired speeds)
My upstairs PC is directly connected to my router/modem and receives 200+
That's why I ask. It looks like you'r getting 250Mbs through your ISP. My download & upload is 930/930, so I want to know if the Orbi stalls out around 400Mbs as my internet won't be the bottle neck, the Orbi will. That's why I'm asking if using the Orbi wireless Mesh is the same as using a wired backhaul? A simple test on your side since your ISP is the bottle neck, is doing a file transfer intranet. Just transfer front your wireless laptop to your wired computer.
Thanks
Jerry Pena if your ISP speed is this high ... get the wifi 6 ASUS AX 11000 router and bridge them ..
Thank you this helped decide, i also have the nighthak router and its not enough for my house
Thanks for the detailed test.

YoSoyPro make sure your modem is good and gives decent speeds... yes it will help a lot with the wifi strength.
@dinkgear I see you have a USB port on your orbi set. Can you hook a hard drive up to it?
Nice i will be buying thus today. This is probably the same thing cox cable wants to rent me for $12 a month.
Thank you... Yes I am still using the same system :)
so you have had the system for some time . would you repurchase this one over the other mesh networks?
System is still performing as it did from day 1. so yes.
However... in the past I have had experiences with Netgear routers after having them for extended periods of time, like dropping Wi-Fi and loosing performance after firmware updates. Suspecting faulty firmware updates to brick devices so new ones would need purchased.. but that's just the conspiracy theorist in me :)
Thanks, what modem works good with this? What about the orbi that comes with a built in modem.
We have our Orbi paired with a Arris Xfinity Gateway (provided by ISP)
Doesn't matter where I go in the house my average is 100mbs even when next to the main router, I would expect 200mbs there.
Overall at least end to end we have very good internet compared to devolo 500 WiFi Powerlines
I have a brick built house and used to average 20mbs .
If your house is cat 5 wired in all rooms what mesh option would be best?
Thoughts?
jason berner possible to move orbi base unit to middle floor with cat5 cable. Satellite in basement and satellite top floor
jason berner The Orbi satellites can now be daisy chained with the newest firmware. Orbi in basement and satellite on each level with daisy chain enabled in settings.
This was a great review video, thanks for putting it up
i like your review.
Sweet Magpul shirt!
Subscribed! Thank you for the great review, sir!
How has this setup been performing since you first installed it? Are you still using it?
THANKS!
I believe you would be good. Should provide 100Mb everywhere in your home
Failing is odd, i have setup two of those in 2 diff homes, never did have a fw fail. at either location
I bought Netgear Orbi after watching this review. I used to have CM1000 before getting Arris ab8200- I am still not receiving the 1gb speeds as advertised by Comcast on my iPhone or Mac. What could be the reason?
Hard wired... what are your ISP speeds direct to your modem?
Hard Wired on CM1000~ 950 MBPS and Arris ~ 850MBPS
Check the Netgear forums... looks like a couple have had the same issue and fixed it
Would it be possible to test through brick and stone, i did a test at my house and speeds were terrible however when done through plasterboard it was rapid.
unfortunately I do not have a brick and stone setup anywhere in my house
Hey - great review - can you plug in a satellite to serve up internet if I have two available Ethernet ports on opposite sides of my house?
The satellites have open Ethernet ports that can be directly plugged into
Great Speed improvments! :D
I'm sold Thank you
@9:10 you mention speed from your ISP to be “about 210 mega BYTES per sec”. It looks like Speedtest shows 187 M’b’ps. That’s mega BITS per sec. so that’d come to around 187/8 MBps. Anyways thanks for the vid: helps me decide on the orbi.
Thanks... well have an updated vid soon for a fup. It is always improving... currently at 483.03 Mbps
Can you please tell me the app you are using on your phone, I need to test how bad my home is.
Speedtest
Hey man you house looks amazing lol
Hi I have a Motorola sbg6782 cable modem, with router/wifi combo.can this orbi still connect with this modem..I have Xfinity Comcast 4 service..how should I hook this up with the orbi? I live in 2 story aprtmnt also! Thanks!!
Plug it directly into. Modem/ router. Make sure to disable bridge mode on xfinity gateway.
So are you gonna post the new set up with router in the middle?
Yes... it's on my to do list
DinkGear it's been a year. Hows is the network holding up?
Can I hook up an Orbi into a Comcast gateway device that is both a modem/router combo?
Yes... My Orbi hooks up directly to my Comcast gateway.
I also do not use Comcast gateway Wi-Fi at all... Orbi only Wi-Fi in the house
What app do you use to gauge speed?
I’m told you can’t choose between 2.4 or the 5.0, if it’s true that not good.
Can these be hard wired together?
Excellent! Thanks!
Great Video sir
Are all the ORBI system tri-band ?
Yes top my knowledge they are
what ISP do you have? Damn, Comcast I only get 120mbps wired.
Comcast... I currently have 411 down as they keep raising my speeds
@@DinkGear Are you getting that 411 download via wireless with you Orbi?
Yes... wireless
What app are you using to test speed
That one was speedtest
Do you ever have a problem with losing your signal and having to do a reboot . My tp link i have to reboot ever day . Thanks great video
Perhaps once a month I will reboot the entire system
My wiFi was too slow to play this video...
can anyone help me please? what if i have a Modem Router (in other words, a router with a built-in modem)? will it work? is it compatible? every instruction or videos are about houses where there is a modem device apart from a different router device. thanks
Orbi rocks.
Nice review very nice home 👍
Thank you
Thank you for the video. It was very helpful. I'm using this to justify the price to myself mouhahahaha.
Can u set these up from ur mobile
There is a Netgear Orbi app... but it is pretty limited on functionality
Nice magpul shirt
Thnx for the info
last question the word dropped should've been throughout my house. My Comcast account is give me 25 MBPS
Video starts at 3:46 your welcome
Amazing
Just to let you know it seems like someone downloaded this video the. Reuploaded it on their own channel.
Laura hieu HLN channel is the channel I'm talking about.
@@steamkidsdad Looked there, I didn't see it. Link?

If someone does have this system, can you tell me if it works well in the mountains
Should work fine in the house that it is placed in... providing there is decent ISP speeds provided by their ISP
latest firmware messed this system up i just replaced it. i hope netgear has a fix in the next firmware
What firmware version are you running currently?
latest firmware runs great and added ethernet backhaul. But I sill prefer the eero Pro Gen 2 system. Better range and stability.
Where can we buy this?
I purchased mine from Costco as they had the Orbi and 2 satellite deal... but it also can be found at Amazon
latest firmware on this orbi ...26 breaks router where wifi connects but says no internet . this happens on not all devices though
netgear support on this router sucks be careful before you buy it
I'm curious on his day job. WiFi troubles..in a mansion o.
TikiShootah i use mine with a xfinity gateway. (Modem router combo) bridge mod3. Works perfect
please do one more actual wifi speed test and not internet speed test by downloading Android app called 'WiFi Speed Test' and theirs speed test server on any pc or laptop with gigabit Ethernet port from here bitbucket.org/pzolee/tcpserver/downloads/ and connect it to base unit through Ethernet cable and run speed test on mobile app and share the video. it will check you max wifi speed and not bound to your internet connection speed and online servers.
Buy the app; get rid of the adds
Don't waste your money. The satellite can't see the router in the same room.
Curious as to why you would even need a satellite in the same room as the router. Perhaps you had a faulty one as clearly this is not the case. Try Netgear support if you still have it to remedy issue.
not 6000ft thes 7500ft..
Yes it's worst it.
not 6000ft thes 7500ft
