    I watched over a dozen videos and yours was the best. In 6 min, I now know to order Google WiFi for my home that has Ethernet cables at far corners. My brother on the otherhand needs Orbi since he has dead spots and no Ethernet wiring. And thanks for testing the Orbi router with and without the satellite - no one else did.

    I just purchased this two days ago and had it up and running in about 1 hour. Had some minor connectivity glitches here and there but it seems to be holding speed throughout my 4600 square foot house. Download now is 301 Mbps and Upload at 323 Mbps.

    I recently purchased had really no issues out of the box I downloaded the orbi app follow the instructions an updated firmware I had no problem just remember if you want a good connection to your satellite do not block your router with a books or any other objects your router is communicating with the satellite all the time so make sure that both units are clear of clutter

    Was debating between the eero and Orbi to replace my trusted Apple ABS. Your video may have tipped the balance towards the Orbi:
    1- prefer desktop management app over the iOS app
    2- coverage: we moved into a new 1500 sqft condo. Newer construction materials and every owner and their dog using wifi (13 networks at last count) I need above par coverage.
    3- USB port (question for you Paul can I connect an external drive to use as Time machine or is printer only?)
    You've gained a new subscriber :)

    I got the orbi Tri band. Got I set up but I find it takes a good 30-45 seconds for an ordinary news website such as Sky news to come in. In fact it won't pick up the Irish national news website RTE.
    This happens also when I try to look at a weather app. Takes ages to open.
    Again if I'm listening to a radio station on my iPhone if I try to open an other website the radio drops until I come away from the radio.
    Interestingly it seems to link more easily to sky go or Netflix than to ordinary apps such as a news app like sky news
    While the coverage is not as good as advertised once I get an app working apart from above complaints it holds onto that app as I move around house.
    Any one have similar issues. My download speed at pic from the router is 150-160 megs

    Nice graphics of the home setup. Just to confirm - were those real test results or theoretical. And have you noticed any difference going between floors vs across a single level? In other words do the antennas work better in the horizontal plane or does it seem more omnidirectional. Thanks!

    • @TheFriendlyReviewer
      @TheFriendlyReviewer  7 лет назад +1

      Yes - those were real / measured results. I haven't found a difference with the performance across floors. I don't have any WiFi uses directly below or above the units. I'm not sure what the antenna pattern looks like.

      I placed the router on its side, turned off the satellite, and pointed the top towards the opposite corner of my house. Measuring the WiFi connection and internet speed at the opposite corner (about 60 feet away), I wasn't able to find a measurable difference between the horizontal and vertical planes.

    Hello,
    We have a 3 floor home. The 10th floor is 2200sq. feet, 11th floor is 4500 sq. feet and 12th floor is 4500 sq feet. Will placing the Orbi router in the 11th floor and then one satellite in the 11th floor, and one in the 10th floor, cover both floors? What would happen if the internet came from the 10th floor and the satellites were placed on the 11th floor? Note that it is possible to place the router in a fairly central position in both the floors. 12th floor isn't mandatory. Also note I'm talking about the 6000 sq feet one.

    If you wired the main Orbi router with a 60 foot ethernet cable to the Orbi satellite would that essentially give it the same exact power/speed as the main router? So basically if you connected to ethernet cable directly from the router into a PlayStation or Xbox would you get the same exact speed out of the satellite Orbi as you would from the main Orbi directly connected to one of the systems?

  • @ranjsg
    @ranjsg 7 лет назад +1

    Really nice and helpful review. One point I didn't get is - in a multi storey house, should the Satellite Orbi be placed on Same floor as main Orbi (in line of sight & 60 ft. away) OR should the Satellite Orbi be placed on the floor where the signal is weak (for e.g on 2nd floor in your sample case). Would be great if you can advice.

    • @TheFriendlyReviewer
      @TheFriendlyReviewer  7 лет назад

      I can't give specific advice since each scenario is different, but you want the satellite close enough to the router that it gets a good connection, but also close to your location where you signal is weak so that the satellite's wifi range covers the area. I found that the 3rd band that connects the router to the satellite was better than the general wifi. (ruclips.net/video/rUmaTXLl0Q0/видео.html)
      In summary the best placement will probably be somewhere between your router and where your weak wifi issue is located, but if you experiment you may find that you can go ahead and place the satellite in that weak area and get your full speed. If that works, I'd go ahead and place it closer to the weak area. If not, put it closer to the router, but where it still can cover the weak area.
      Hope this helps, and best of luck to you.

    Thank you for the review! I do have a question. My house is about to get 155mbps, I would put the satellite orbi close to my room (where I use a lot of data) would there be any difference between just using the wifi OR if I would plug in an Ethernet cord into the back of the orbi satellite and into my computer? Would the Ethernet provide faster connection? Thanks

    • @TheFriendlyReviewer
      @TheFriendlyReviewer  7 лет назад +1

      I haven't been able to perform a test on this. I'll make sure to comment on here if I do. (Without doing the test, I would think that plugging a cord between the satellite and the computer would be the fastest option.)

    Paul can you tell me if i have any two devices running at the same time in the same room will i lose a lot of signal strength or will both show about the same on the speed test. I have a comcast modem with voice and get good signal pretty much thru the house, but when i'm on my ipad and my wife is on hers in the same room, our speed test drop in half. I'm guessing that won't happen with the orbi..My router will be on the main level in a corner of the house and won't to put the satellite down in basement by are entertainment big screen which will be about 40 ft but down stairs. Any hel would be appreciated.
    Steve

      It's hard to answer the question with 100% certainty. In our house, we run a lot of devices at once with no trouble. (multiple smart phones, Kindle Fires, ipads, computers, stream devices, and gaming systems) With our old router, we couldn't do anything on the internet if one of the Kindle Fires was downloading an app. I have not noticed anything with the signal dropping with the Orbi.

    What's the difference between a satellite and a repeater

    • @TheFriendlyReviewer
      @TheFriendlyReviewer  6 лет назад +1

      The satellite allows you to have one SSID and password, where a repeater may or may not allow you to do this. When the repeater uses the same SSID, a satellite/router system should do a better job a connecting your devices to the best connection as you move about. Sometimes repeater systems will continue to hold on to the first connection until it is complete lost no matter how weak it may be. The Orbi in particular has a third band to connect to the satellites so it won't eat up your bandwidth talking between the router and the satellite. Repeaters need to use the current bands to talk to the router, thus using up some of your bandwidth. Some other mesh systems allow you to connect the satellites through a wired connection which is also different than most repeaters. Hope this helps!

    • @cowboycolts
      @cowboycolts 6 лет назад

      The Friendly Reviewer ah thanks, looking to get this while it's on sale, and looking at the satellite it sounded pretty much like a repeater

    we just bought a 2100 sq town house with 5 floors including the roof top :( would this cover all 5 floors?

    • @TheFriendlyReviewer
      @TheFriendlyReviewer  7 лет назад

      There is no way to guarantee that any system will meet your needs since it is dependent on where you have to place your router, the building materials, and perhaps even the WiFi interference. To help you out I tested the extreme in my house and have posted a video (ruclips.net/video/rUmaTXLl0Q0/видео.html). Assuming you don't have concrete floors I would think it could handle it. Your chances would be improved if you can place the router on floor 2 of 5 and the satellite on floor 4 of 5.
