  • In this video, I will show you the correct way to connect your Netgear Orbi satellites to the main Orbi hardwired while in access mode "AP" This will guarantee that all the Orbi units will put out the max speeds through wifi. You can also separate the Orbi farther apart if they are hardwired. Only turn on AP mode if you have a stand alone router.

    Thanks for your video. I have the Orbi RBR50, and I have FIOS as my ISP and it uses a G1100 router. I've been having a LOT of difficulty with keeping the wifi signal running "Internet may not be available". I finally switched the Orbi to AP mode, and left satellites connection wireless. I'll see how they work, if they're slow, I'll hardwire them.Once again, THANKS!

      Internet may not be available? that might be the modem dropping offline or the G1100 is not talking to the orbi. See if you can put the G1100 into bridge mode and use the orbi as the main router. Sorry, I didn't see your comment sooner.

      Hi, I do have FIOS and use my Orbi as my router. Question: Do you need the G1100 router to have service? If not, take out the G1100 router completely and use your Orbi RBR50 router instead. Hardwire/Ethernet your back haul to your satellite, if you can, for faster speeds.

    Hi thanks for the video, I just got my pair of Orbi’s. It’s running on WiFi right now. But now I want to hook it up with Ethernet like u did. Do I just hook them up with cables like you did from the router unit and that’s it or do I have to change settings after I plug them together with the Ethernet cables?

      Before you plug them in to cat5e be sure to upgrade the firmware. After that you just plug them in and thats it. You can then log into the orbi and make sure they are all talking to each other via hardline and not wifi.

    Great video . I have orbi rbk50 plus satalites and have been using as a router and WiFi . But while I have connectivity. I get really bad / slow throughput on phone and other wireless devices to the point of it being useful. Have fiddled with all the setting but it’s still not better . So thinking of turning back my isp modem routing feature back on turning this into an expensive WiFi AP as you have demoed . Do you think this will help. Reason being the isp modem router works fine and is tuned by service provider.

    Hi Rick, I have a Orbi RBK50 with satellite which works out of the box perfectly but due to having an old brick built house I have had to buy another satellite to connect to cover my upstairs as the kids complain it drops out to 3G then on to WiFi. It now seems to work perfectly with good speed and coverage but I now need to extend to my garage/workshop. The Orbi struggles to punch the signal through the thick brick wall and foil backed insulation into the work shop I have wondered if I could buy another satellite and hardwire from the Orbi router unit to a new satellite in the garage/workshop or due they all have to be hardwired together which may be a problem.
    In short can one satellite be hard wired and the rest just standalone WiFi?
    If this won’t work I may have to think about the Orbi external Satellite RBS50Y but is super expensive and some reviews say it’s not great??? I appreciate your thoughts on this.
    Cheers.

      If you are not turning on the AP mode, and you are letting the Orbi work as a router, it won't matter how you wire it up. Just make sure the main orbi is plugged into the modem first.

    Thank you, Rick, for your Video; I have a quick question when I set up the Orbis as AP (Also wired, as you explained), will the Mesh still work fine, or will it be a direct node-to-node AP mode connection? So if I have my phone on wi-fi calling mode, when I am on call and move downstairs, will the call continue or get dropped because it moved to the second satellite node? If the Mesh still exists with this setup, it will be fantastic; please let me know if you have time.

    |-------->Orbi Satellite 1
    |-------->Orbi Satellite 2
    |-------->Other 5 rooms with ethernet
    I tried but it doesn't work. Is this the right topology? If no, what would you suggest? My switch and router is in closet and I don't want to put my Orbi router beside that hidden and closed which might attenuate the signals from router.

    Hi Rick. First off, thank you for responding to all these questions, it's not easy, but I think everyone here finds them and your videos helpful so keep up the good work. I've looked through all the comments and I think I have a question that hasn't been answered. I have a new 3 piece Orbi ax6000 unit, and it works well, but because of how the house is laid out the router needs to be on one end of the house and I still need good internet all the way on the other side, I had hoped that the two satellites spaced out would daisy-chain the wifi enough to get me there, but unfortunately the other side of the house is 1/40th of the speed. Here's the question, due to a random set up of circumstances, I have 1 cat6 cable that runs from one end of the house to the other, if I got a 4th satellite and wired it directly back to the main orbi router, could I have 1 sat in AP mode, 2 sat in (wifi mode) in roughly the middle of the house, and then the router, and have everything work and sing kumbaya together? or is it an all or nothing situation and all the satellites have to be wired or wireless?
    Sorry for the long question but I do look forward to hearing your thoughts. Thanks!

    • @Ricks_Tech_Talk
      @Ricks_Tech_Talk  3 года назад +2

      Thanks for the kind words. Don't worry about turning on AP mode because in your setup the main Orbi is the router. But you could have one Orbi hard wired and others that are not and that's fine. They would all be the same speed if you had them all wired back to the main but that can't always be done. I think my video confused a lot of people. But AP mode just means you dont want to use the Orbi to do the routing and DHCP of devices on your network. Some people buy a hardwired router with no wifi that can do more then the Orbis built in router. So in your case move or buy another satellite and use that cat6. Just make sure the satellite is working through wifi and firmware is up to date. Then power cycle it with the cat5 plugged in and that's it. :)

      @@Ricks_Tech_Talk Confirmed and Ecstatic! I got the extra satellite and hooked it up and it worked right away, they router recognized automatically, I actually didn't have do literally anything with the AX6000 then plug in the ethernet. For anyone else reading this - This created a high speed backhaul to the router and increased the wifi on the other side of the house, the set up is everything I wanted. Also for those wondering I actually used the cable companies coax in the wall to create this connection with the help of two MoCA 2.0 boxes (which turn coax into ethernet essentially) works great. Your NH will give off what ever wifi name you tell it to when you set it up. I would turn off the wifi on the NH and just use the NH as a hardwired router. Then use the Orbis in AP mode just for wifi devices.

    Hi Rick, My home is not wired for ethernet and I have an Orbi RBR20 router with 3 RBS20 satellites spread through the house (no backhaul). I am having a lot of issues with internet connection dropping intermittently when I enable the built in Circle parental control software in the Orbi. From what I see online, it is a known issue and Netgear/Circle have not fixed the issue. I have already invested in these Orbis so I would like to use continue using them for WiFi. If I purchased the Synology RT2600AC router (have a Synology NAS and like their interface and their parental control seems to be well built) will I be able to use the Synology for parental controls only? If I wire the main RBR20 to Synology router and change it to AP mode, will I be able to use change the satellites to AP mode and continue using them wirelessly?

    It is hard to keep explanations easy, thanks for doing exactly that (transparaent and easy to follow explanation)! I intend to purchase the Orbi's and run the Orbi as router with wired satellites configuration. Do the Orbi's first need to be connected (setup) without the wiring or is that not needed at all? Just out of curiosity, why in your setup do you use a switch between the router and the first Orbi, why not directly hardwire the router to the first Orbi?
    THanks in advance!

    • @Ricks_Tech_Talk

      When you first do the setup they will be added to the app on your phone and they need to be wireless. After the install you power them down and connect them and power back up :)
      2nd when you run the orbi in AP mode they all need to be after the switch and the satellites need to be ran back to the main orbi not the switch. Its messed up lol. I now run Ubiquiti UniFi UAP-AC-PROs for wifi and they plug into the switch.

    When hard wiring, do the Orbi's have to be connected to each other or can they all be connected through a switch? My thoughts are that the ideal set up would be to have a hard wired connection to each room or zone with each room having it's own switch. Each room would connect to a master switch or router. Placing one Orbi in each room or zone and being hard wired to the network through the switch to handle wireless connectivity. Would this be correct?

      The higher frequencies from 149 MHz and up are still not available to use even if you hardwired. You are still stuck with 36-64 MHz for your devices. I didn't like that at all because I get interference from my neighbors wifi from them running on 42 and 58 MHz. So they talk to each other hardwired but the higher 5g channels are still locked for back haul use only. Thats why I sold mine and went with a few UniFi AP pros.

    How does mesh AP modes are differnet?
    While in mesh your device connect automatically to the best WiFI satelite, when it comes to AP, does not it work the same way, except that APs can wired?

    • @Ricks_Tech_Talk
      @Ricks_Tech_Talk  Год назад +1

      The mesh part is the same in AP mode, you can hard wire them or leave them in wireless. AP is only when you turn off the router function in the Orbi. You will then need a router for the Orbi to plug into, that could be a hard wired router like a edge router or it could be a wireless router like a nighthawk. AP is great when you have a more powerful device to do all the routing, like an edge router.
      Hope that helps, I didn't explain that very well in the video.

    I’m a little confused I very new to this type of stuff I’m having issues with my WiFi through my whole house it’s made of brick walls and 2 floors and got dead spots in multiple spots In the house. If I get the orbi WiFi 6 mesh system and replace my router and put the mesh connector in one of my dead spots connected through Ethernet do I get better WiFi? Connection because it’s wired and not connected through wireless? So if I have like 3 dead spots would this be the best coverage be by having them all connected by Ethernet first then use the WiFi on WiFi devices? I dunno if what I said made sense sorry. I’m really new to this Im just trying to get the very best coverage as possible with best WiFi speeds and connection.

      You are dead on. If you can wire them all back to the main orbi then the satellites will put out the same WiFi speeds as the main unit. Also if they are wired they can be separated much farther then if they were talking to the main orbi through WiFi.

Then run a cat5 out of the orbi and see what speeds you get. Might not be the orbi it could be the cat5 wire or maybe its the Wi-Fi settings in the orbi. That's why I say test the speeds out of the orbi using the cat5 port. Good luck

They are configured as a different SSID which he would rather have all 6 ORBIs using one SSID. Is that possible by putting the Shop router in Access Mode? Thanks, Mike. He also bought a newer set of WIFI 6 ORBIs RBR750s which we were trying to replace the RBR50s but that only muddied the waters. In your case I would turn the wifi off on your modem/gateway and let the ordi do the routing and wifi. AP mode is for people that might have a hardwired router like this store.ui.com/collections/operator-edgemax-routers
      People use something like that for a business or a webserver. If it for home use just let the orbi do the routing dont turn on the AP mode. But turn off the wifi on your modem or put the modem/gateway into bridge mode. Putting the modem/gateway into bridge mode makes it a modem only and disables the router inside. The orbi will be a better router for you.

    I’m a dummy when comes to this stuff. I need help in a new 2 story home i bought & bought the orbi that comes with one router one satellite -I’ll try really hard to explain this with as little words as i can. I wanted to run them hard wired since i have Ethernet in every room-even in the open visible upstairs hallway and living room area. I’m confused between whether I’m able to use the switch or run separately. Here we go!
    Current setup
    I have a downstairs (middle of house) media closet that was built with house in 2009
    In there i have the cable company’s modem and WiFi router
    In there is where the switch is-it’s a 16 space switch with 12 used that comes from all the Ethernet cables from all the rooms
    What i want to do
    I want to hook up the orbi router just outside that closet(drill holes thru wall into media closet)
    Put the satellite upstairs in the upstairs living room which is center of upstairs and visible from downstairs
    The satellite upstairs i want to plug into the Ethernet port up there-in that living room
    So after watching your video
    I see that i hook up my modem
    Then run to my router(but I’ll have to switch my router to AP?)
    Then run it to the orbi router installed right outside the media closet
    Here’s my confusion
    Once i just did those last steps, do i run a Ethernet from the orbi router back into media closet and plug it into the whole house media switch? Where all the other Ethernets run into or am i going to have to locate the one Ethernet cable i have the satellite upstairs plugged into and detach it from the switch and plug it into the orbi router on it’s own?
    So i guess I’m saying is-can i just have the orbi router just run into the whole house 16 port Ethernet switch to power up the satellite upstairs? Or am i going to have to figure out which one that is upstairs and pull it out of switch and run it directly to the Orbi router?
    One last question
    Do i even need to keep the cable companies router in the mix? What is the purpose of keeping it in between the modem and the orbi router? I’m an idiot on these things so just curious, if it’s better to leave it in series then I’ll keep it in?
    I hope this all made sense? Trying to draw you a mental picture of the scene. Thanks man for any help!

      So my video was not made for what you are doing. But this is what I would do in your situation
      1. buy a docsis 3.1 modem only, no router and save 14.00 dollars or so a mo
      2. Wire modem to Orbi and that can be outside the closet
      3. wire back in to the closet from Orbi to switch
      4. wire satellite Orbis back to switch and done.
      Before the satellite orbis can be hardwired they need to be setup and working via wifi. After they work through wifi power them down and connect them to cat5 and power them back up.
      AP mode is only if you have a hardwired router like a Edge Router www.ui.com/edgemax/edgerouter-4/
      Something like the Edge router has more power then what the Orbi has built in. So when you turn on the AP you are turning off the router hardware in the Orbi and its only being used as wifi. You only do this if you have a small business or a lot of security cameras. So my setup goes in this order Modem - Edge Router - Switch - 3 Wireless access points (AP) Hope this helps

      @@Ricks_Tech_Talk I have a Tp link switch and to link deco m5 , my service provider modem comes with a router , my major Challenge is on the last floor house the Bulding the deco m5 speed is slow becos of the distance so I was thinking of hardwiring them

      @Ricks_Tech_Talk  3 года назад

      If you can get them hardwired they will all put out the same speed and distance from one another wont matter. I would do that, and I'm not sure if deco needs to be wired back to the main one or if you can use the switch. Try the switch first and see if it works

    I think you would have been better off running from your modem into the first Orbi and then out to your switch. Then you can connect your other satellites to the switch

    • @Ricks_Tech_Talk
      @Ricks_Tech_Talk  3 года назад

      You are right that would be easy but in my case I use a hardwired router that can do much more than a Orbi router. Only a few people might do it like me. Thanks for you comment and thanks for watching...

    why cant you blug them through the switch

    • @Ricks_Tech_Talk

      No clue, they just don't work running through a switch in AP mode. But please don't get confused by this video, this is only if you are using them in AP mode.

      @@Ricks_Tech_Talk thanks for the reply so i thought they could backhall throught you network but the question i have is if you are backhalling over ethernet can you use the 3rd band for wifi

    • @Ricks_Tech_Talk
      @Ricks_Tech_Talk  2 года назад

      They can back backhaul using a switch, just not in AP mode. In normal routing mode, you can use a switch, but you do not get the higher 5gz frequencies back. To me, that's something they could fix with firmware. But in a way, it's good. If the cat5e gets damaged, the wireless backhaul is already working.

      Thank you Axelrod360. I have recently switched to a different editing program and better mics for my audio. I also found a setting in my sound card that levels all volume so I was unaware it was that bad. Thanks for pointing that out.

    Help me understand why you're doing this as opposed to the following
    Under Advanced tab, advanced setup, router/ap mode, select AP mode? Unless I'm missing something, your method also results in double nat for the wifi clients.

      what you posted is how you switch the unit into AP mode in the software. What I show in the video is how to wire them so they can back haul through cat5e. So first you do the software option like what you post then you can wire them the way I demonstrated in the video. If they are not wired the way I showed they will not back haul through the cat5e while in AP mode.

    Hardwire....??? I think people buy Orbi's cause they want to go wireless. Why do most of the youtube videos are about hardwired AP mode does not seem logical

    • @Ricks_Tech_Talk
      @Ricks_Tech_Talk  2 года назад

      Hard wiring the Orbi's is a bit odd but AP mode is very odd for them. A very tiny percent of people would ever put them in AP mode, that's why I made the video. But Orbi's rock when they are hardwired together.
