  • It's not as easy to just say "get a Mesh system" for your home WiFi any more. With so many on the market, there's a lot to consider. In this video Trev compares three Netgear Orbi systems to see how their features differ, what you get when you pay more, and how to future proof your network.

Thanks Trev. I've been to'ing and fro'ing over which mesh system to upgrade to. Was leaning towards the Orbi but this and another of your videos on Orbi has swayed me.

Excellent video, and timely too considering the comments in the Man Cave.

Thanks just what I was looking for, after doing some research decided on the Orbi but couldn't decide which one. This has helped supporting my decision to go for the 853 mainly future proofing and not getting caught out having to buy extra devices to hard-wire near the satellite. Thanks again

Fantastic explanation. I live in the UK. Currently I have a tp link deco m5 system. Just upgraded to bt full fibre. Near the bt router I get up to 500mb speed wifi. Happy with that. But the deco satellite units are all about 50mb! Thinking of purchasing netgear orbi 700 or 800 series. The main unit would be connected to the router in a small laundry room. Will the orbi make a big difference? Thanks.

Can you interconnect these units with ethernet cabling? what would be the advantage of doing that? Thank you.

Also, are you sure you can hardwire local devices to Satellite ethernet ports, I thought these were just for backhauling?
Or was that just on the older RBS50's?

the Internet Router/Modem should be the same manufacture as your Wifi Mesh system because they both will use the same software

Apologies if this is obvious but if you have a non wifi 6 ISP supplied modem/router and you plug these in, do you get wifi 6 or does the source modem/router need to be wifi 6 compatible? I’m FTTN so can’t just plug the Orbi straight in. Great video BtW.

Well what you would do is DISABLE the WIFI on that ISP modem, then plug this in and make it your only network - and YES, it will be WiFi 6!

The problem with Netgear's Orbi ( I had the 852), you could not setup separate SSIDs for each frequency. I have legacy devices that will not connect in a mixed environment. That was big factor in my return of the product. Nonetheless, It is a good product.

Thank you, such information is gold. So, back to ASUS then, knowing well that it wouldn’t last me 3 years. 😢

Same. I had to buy a small 2.4ghz range extender with a different SSID to sort that out. Not a good outcome.

This is the consumer line of Orbi. The Pro version isn't represented, which has more granular control of the network.

Thanks to Mr Turnbull and the Liberal Party, I can by the cheapest knowing my home Internet speed will never catch up in my lifetime! 😊

Aussie, a former network engineer and an ex-ISP worker here. Blame the liberals, yes, 100 percent; Mr. Turnbull, however, is a grey area.
The liberal party didn't want the NBN; they didn't understand it. Tony Rabbit's quote exemplifies this, "Why spend all this money on NBN when there are great technologies like 4g.". If you understand mobile internet, you know it is a HORRIBLE idea. Mr turnbull, at the time, at least understood it and was at least mildly in favor of it on a personal level. He acted as a buffer for Tony so Tony couldn't scrap the whole thing leaving us with something WORSE; Tony is the primary reason we have FTTN now 😢. Turnbull implemented FTTC, and to his credit, if everyone had gotten FTTC from the beginning, we wouldn't have spent nearly as much, and everyone would now have a conquerable product.
Personally though I would have offered it as a government assisted business product and made businesses put in most of the cost for deployment. Then after enough buy-in only then rolled it out from the masses would have been 100s of times cheaper

This is a shit device with poor software and networking features. If are looking to do anything more than internet access this isnt the device. The static routing on this device does not work.
