Is the Netgear Orbi WiFi 6 AX6000 Mesh Networking System Worth Buying?

  • getconnectedmedia.com - With increased Internet usage, many people are discovering just how weak their home networking has become. Most older routers, or the ones that come with your service provider, are toiling with Zoom calls, video streaming, online gaming, as well as all the smart assistants, speakers, robot vacuums, tablets, smartphones, video cameras, thermostats, and more. That's where a system like the Netgear Orbi wifi 6 AX6000 Mesh Network comes in handy.
Built for wifi 6, the latest wifi standard, the Netgear Orbi wifi 6 AX6000 covers up to 5000 sq ft with just two devices. The system, as shown in this video, supports a quad stream backhaul, a feature that was in the previous Netgear Orbi mesh systems, that allows direct connections between each access point, and faster direct speeds to devices. It'll handle over 100 devices with ease. As Mike pointed out, he's already at 65, so he's almost there.
While few devices at home currently have wifi 6 802.11ax support, except the latest smartphones and laptops, the Orbi wifi 6 AX6000 system is fully backwards compatible with previous generation wifi standards. Speaking of the latest standards, as more homes become wired for fibre optic, the WAN port on the central unit will connect at up to 2.5 Gbps. So, if you are lucky enough to have 1 Gbps service to your home, this system will handle it. There's even a built-in four-port Gigabit switch in each access point, allowing you to plug-in devices that require an Ethernet connection, increasing the flexibility of the system, and keeping you from drilling holes in your walls to accommodate them.
The system is made for high performance, but there are two immediate caveats. For starters, the system is costly at over $699 US for the two-pack system, as shown. If you have a family, parental controls are not available, so if you do go with this system, you will have to find other ways to control access. So, if you want the fastest WiFi currently available, you should buy it. But if you have kids, hopefully, a software update adds much needed parental controls, or check out an add on like Circle, also from Netgear.
What are your thoughts on the Netgear Orbi wifi 6 AX6000 System? Let us know in the comments!

In my opinion this is the best mesh Wi-Fi system on the market as of September 2020. I could care less about parental controls since there’s no kids in my house but if there was one thing I was going to criticize it would be the lack of QoS.

You should consider doing a "deeper dive" into this (and other) Netgear mesh router systems. For example:
-- What's the length of their warranty?
-- How is support provided, both during the warranty period, and afterwards?
-- Show us the app interface and the browser interface.
-- How reliable is it? What are they saying on the Netgear Orbi support forum?
-- What kind of distance range does it have? (Speed isn't everything if you walk outside your house and lose signal).
-- To the second point, above. You have to pay for Netgear support after the warranty period is over.
-- Have you tested how well it handles firmware updates? (My RBK50 system locks up after each FW update).
-- You didn't show us where you located the main unit and satellite in your house. Did you test other locations?

Just got this router with a nighthawk cm1200 modem with a Comcast 1 gig plan. With the entire family of 5 online gaming and all I was still getting 940 down 42 up & 14 ping on my iPhone 11 Pro. So I can testify this router is great if you have have a 1 gig plan to take full advantage of it cuz it ain’t cheap. I think there’s cheaper options if you don’t have gig speed plan.

All these "So called Reviews" are really just commercials for the product. How about actually showing it in action and saying I'm 20 or 50 or 100 feet from the base router and here are the speeds I'm getting in each room of my house. An actual review would show this. Take your Iphone or Ipad or any laptop and even tv's with android have use of apps that can give you a speedtest to get an idea of how good the router and the satellite really are. You don't see this in this so called "Review"

Question is there a way to hard wire your satellite? I’ve been thinking about hard wiring a few rooms with cat8. If I do that is it possible to hard wire the satellite? I always hear wired is better then wireless and thought well hey if my satellite was wired in would it be faster or say more consistent.

    • @MultiRock38
      @MultiRock38 4 года назад

Yes, the main router can be connected to the satellites via the ethernet ports to create a wired backhaul which is far more reliable than the wireless connection. Also, CAT8 would be totally overkill and an order of magnitude more expensive than CAT6A or even CAT7. I really dont think you need the 40gbps up and downlink. CAT8 is meant for server farms and hardcore enterprise networking requirements.

    • @ridin_low193

The powerline works fine assuming your electric powerlines are up to the challenge, not loaded full of efi noise. Even some outlets dont work as well as others maybe due to less than perfect termination at the plugs, sometimes reterminating a new wall plug solves that. Once i found a plug that was hot and arching because i was trying to get it running better for powerline module.

One thing that MUST be worth noting is that the AX WIFI6 Orbi units no longer have a setting for 'topology '. This means that you cannot force one satellite to connect to another. In my case the router connected to a distant satellite despite another satellite being between them,. Speeds were poor and there was nothing I could do to force connect the mesh in the configuration I wanted. Back to TP LINK it is.

This is just a router you need to have a cable modem or a fiber modem or something else to modulate from your ISP. All the router does is manage Internet traffic the modem takes the signal from your ISP and converts into a signal your router can use.

I like the review but not the product. A price tag of $500 plus for a Soho solution is absurd! You better off with Unifi Dream Machine which packs IDS and IPS but if you looking for a more "Secure" solution, go for a pfsense with a few Unifi AP.

No parental controls is a deal breaker. I need to block certain websites and limit web traffic during certain hours. You mentioned wireless backhaul, but does it do Ethernet backhaul?

Welcome to the New World Order. Do you really need your juicer and your shoes to connect to the internet? Its a bit odd how we are being compelled to do this.

It’s really crazy which is doesn’t support 2K and 4K I’m having trouble with streaming via wireless they told me you’ve to connect to the Ethernet 🤣🤣🤣🤣 price is only for the name and the design there’s better mesh WiFi. Than this bullshit Orbi which is very expensive for what we get….

Dont get this crap. Go look up Airties wifi mesh. These are the best there is when you put price and quality in the scope. I install these on daily basis and i never have problems. This “ review “ isn’t really a review at all. You’re just talking. Open the app, get a camera and show us the speed test in each room explaining how far your mesh is ect. This is just talk which i could have read online on the website.
