    Thankyou very much for this video. I was going to buy the Orbi but after seeing the size and weight in your presentation, I've decided that I don't need such a powerful system when there are much smaller devices from TP-Link, D-Link and Google available.

      Hi Mark. Glad the video helped. That's why we do them. We did see a bunch of new gear at CES. TP-Link for one had some cool single routers, both WiFi 6 and 6E. You can see them on this video: ruclips.net/video/jaLyz7Ds4s0/видео.html. Check out the one with the rotating antennas.

    I have a question? I have an old Orbi RBR20 that I bought back in 2017 or so and just bought an Orbi AX3000 with Wi-Fi 6. Can I connect the two Wi-Fi’s and have them both running with two different Wi-Fi’s? Looks like I have one ethernet port on the old Orbi router and maybe use the new Orbi with extra Ethernet ports. Any thoughts on that?

      @Appmyhome  2 года назад +1

      are you asking if you can mesh in the old one? I don’t think you can but to be sure I’d just ask their sales support. mixing different routers with the same ssid and differing radios might be problematic. maybe if you put the old one in ap mode it could work, though again not sure if the ax3000 would support it.

    Nice video, can you manually assign the band for each device? or is automatic and you don't have have option. I have some only 2.4ghz devices and, I dont want to be limited on the placement.Thanks.

    • @Appmyhome
      @Appmyhome  2 года назад

      Thank you. You can't assign by band. We haven't had any issue in this regard and we have lots of 2.4 devices. There is an option in the web interface to enable or disable AX by band, but only one SSID is permitted.

    Nice video, thanks for sharing. About to set my exact system up in a few minutes so this was quite useful. I am wondering why you are seeing faster up and down speeds at the satellites than at the router, that does not make sense to me. Also did you keep the same SSID for both the 2.4 and 5.0 GHz bands? I am wondering what the advantage / disadvantage of that might be. I am thinking of naming them differently which would have me keep the old name on the 2.4 band so I don't have to reprogram all my iOT devices and a new name for the 5GHz band.

    • @Appmyhome
      @Appmyhome  2 года назад +1

      Hi Howard. First I don't think you can name the 2.4 and 5 SSIDs differently. Let me know if you were able to. You can however name the guest network with a different name. The idea of the mesh router is that you only need to know one SSID and the router figures out the best band and channel to connect with, as well as which satellite to connect to.
      Now for those IOT devices, I ended up using the guest network for some of those, with a different name, but not all. However that meant for the devices I wanted to use the IOT SSID I needed to change the devices Wi-Fi setup which can be a pain. As you know if you don't change the SSID you don't need to do that. Also, turns to Orbi doesn't let the two SSIDs devices talk to each other and that can be an issue. So the devices you decide to rename make sure there won't be a conflict. This usually happens if your phone is on the main SSID and the device is on the other and the app wants to be on the same SSID.
      As for performance, the speed test labeled "Marks Office above the router" is a floor apart so likely the floor had the impact on the signal.

      @@Appmyhome thanks. My goal was to try to force some thing to
      Go to the 5.0 mhz band rather than 2.4. I am also seeing some strange behavior such as one device that is on the right side of my router is not connecting to it but is connecting to a satellite on the left side that is further away and up a flight of stairs which makes no sense. Also things that are closer to the router itself a re going to the other satellite. This seems strange and I never had this with my AmplifFi HD mesh. Also the AmpifI and most mesh systems allow you to create multiple SSIDs. Thus I
      Previously had four 2.4 mhz wifi names, but they could all talk to things like my phone or tablet that were on the primary.

    • @Appmyhome
      @Appmyhome  2 года назад

      Mesh is a strange setup as what seems like the right connection seems to go to another route. They are also supposed to migrate from router/satellite as you move through the house. Again, it isn't always instant. So could be you initially connected at one and moved near the other and it didn't switch. Don't know if the device has to participate in the move either. Sometimes you have to play around with satellite placement too.
      As for Amplify, I hear they make good stuff. We haven't had a chance to try them out so can't be much help there.

    2 months later - I'm wondering if you've continued to have good experiences - specifically with connection stability?

    • @Appmyhome
      @Appmyhome  2 года назад +1

      yes, actually like it even more. especially the armor protection as it catches nasty activity. speed is excellent too. now that xfinity is at 1400 down we get the benefit of that at least on the router to arris cable modem to internet side of things. their latest firmware appears quite stable. connection status is stable. and no issues with iot devices on the 2.4 GHz band.
      there is one side effect of lots of speed. lots of data usage. looking like we will exceed our 1.2 GB cap, so switched to unlimited. our thinking is likely because more content is streaming in 4K and the Orbi speed is letting it all thru.

    When I connect do I now connect to my orbi or my modem? Note my orbing router is in AP mode.

    • @Appmyhome
      @Appmyhome  2 года назад

      We only tested in router mode. I would think if you are using AP mode your modem would need to have a router built in to provide the dhcp service. So your devices will come thru the Orbi but managed by your modems router. If you can turn off your modems router I would expect you will find the orbi features more helpful.

      @@Appmyhome Be careful about going router to router as you can end up with a double NAT which will slow everything down. Better to disable all WiFi from a gateway and put it in passthrough or bridge mode to the Orbi.

  • @OrvilleScott

    So even though this router is a Tri-band router, it gets to decide whether your device gets the 2.4GHz or the 5GHz? I think people call that Smart Steering or Smart Wifi.
    I'm gonna have to find a high speed router that's at least a dual-band and offers both 2.4GHz and 5GHz separately.
    My family and I use Optimum's Gateway 6 Modem-Router hybrid, which has caused a plethora of issues. A bunch of internet forum commentators and two Optimum representatives informed me that one of the causes was the Gateway 6's tendency to do Smart Wifi.

    • @Appmyhome
      @Appmyhome  2 года назад +1

      hi Orville. you are correct there is not a way to assign the band inside the router. it does it automatically and as you appear to have seen sometimes those WiFi devices don’t play well and get confused as to which band to connect to even though they know they are only 2.4. we have noticed with all our WiFi devices that only a few have issues anymore. matter of fact I think the last device that had issues is no more so we are fine. maybe you could isolate which devices are given you trouble and contact the manufacturer or replace with something more modern. this said, the router we have and reviewed seems to do well in our mixed band environment, better than our previous model.
