  • TechTalk: Netgear Orbi Wifi 6 AX6000 RBK852 RBKS852 Review: DO NOT BUY THIS ROUTER! From lack of backward compatibility, lack of parental controls, lack of Netgear Armor (Bitdefender), this $700 router has fewer features than the prior generation of Orbi Routers which come with 2 satellites for half the cost! Terrible deal and unfinished product which will leave Orbi 1+2 home network slower than it was before despite Wifi 6! #Orbi #Netgear #Wifi6 #AX6000 #RBK852 #RBS852 #TheChanClan #TechTalk ‪@Netgear‬

    Well, strange your advise. I can only say that I am more than happy. About a month ago, I bought the RBK853 - Orbi WiFi 6 System AX6000 and I am beyond satisfied, it's very reliable and the performance in a three store apartment is amazing! In my opinion it's a great product, the only negative thing is, is the price, too expensive!

    Thanks for your time. I had a Netgear R8000 worked OK but wanted to upgrade since we are having more devices alongg with 3 smart tvs. Purchased a Orbi RBK50 and it was terrible for me. It would randomly disconnect but would reconnect on its on. Very annoying . Returned it and was looking at the Orbi 6 AX6000. Now I just might start looking at another brand. I have always liked Netgear but maybe not this time. I will try to get one that is compatible with my Netgear Powerline 2000 in which I do like. After your testing and info, I am back to ground Zero. Thanks again.

      larry bell the RBK50 or the AC3200’s (I got them at Costco) are actually very good that’s what we reverted to. I had random disconnects and this is because the default topology is a wheel and spoke pattern which requires the satellite to communicate back to the router individually, I changed the topology (there is daisy chain or Star) in the advanced settings and this allowed each satellite to find its way back to the router by the nearest unit including another satellite, you should give that another try

    •  22 дня назад

      I have used the RBK50 + 3 satellites for several years now with zero issues and I am very satisfied. However, WITH cable connection to all three satellites. Before I had the cable connection between them, it was a complete disaster. It was a nightmare and almost never worked.

      People have to watch this with the understanding that this was a preliminary review - remembering that this video was posted over a year ago. Obviously, more updates have taken place since then. I'm sure this would have been helpful for the first 3-6 months since this video was posted but now it's an inaccurate representation of what the product is like right now. And there isn't even anything in the description mentioning whether or not he has uploaded a video of a status update on the improvements of this product, let alone the fact that they now provide a 3-pack for $1k
      Definitely going to try it out because I have heard many good things about this product. Maybe a couple hiccups here and there but for the most part friends I have talked with and reviews I have read state that they are very pleased with how this thing runs, overall.

    Wireless AX wi-fi systems do not pair up well with Wireless AC wi-fi systems. I had the Netgear C7000 modem and router combo in the house and tried to pair the new Nighthawk EAX80 Wi-fi 6 Extender and anything connected to the extender would have intermittent access to sites such as Amazon or eBay, but could access email clients (i.e. Gmail, Yahoo Mail), Google and RUclips. Once I purchased the Nighthawk AX-12 wifi 6 router, and replaced the C7000 modem/router combo, the extender connected perfectly with no intermittent interruptions to websites. I would say keep all of your wi-fi devices to one standard (Wireless AX or AC) and don't mix them.

    This is the absolute best of the best this guy I feel personally had the biggest gripe of not being able to use his older existing units.. Their have been countless tests even comparing the previous gen orbi in real world side by side usage from different distances and in every single test this wifi unit was faster and in a few cases doubled the speed of the previous Gen.. What people don't seam to realize is that netgear is the cream of the crop and if it were only subpar or just mediocre it wouldn't be priced at 699. His gripes aren't even realistic it's two different technologies so therefore you must use the newer devices as far as adding satellites. When I bought mine I did a quick search 2 days ago and you can in fact buy additional satellites... Now I'm not dissing the previous model cause it was a fantastic setup but from my experience so far this is the cream of the crop and is better in every way than the previous model.. Don't let this guy discourage you folks from buying the absolute best wifi mesh system their is

    • @TheChanClanLife
      @TheChanClanLife  4 года назад

      Yeah I wouldn't recommend combining the previous generation satellites as they will bottleneck the network. When this first came out the RBS852 satellites were unavailable and you had to get the router + 1 satellite. The RBK853 pack has since come out which I upgraded to with two RBS852 satellites to match my previous configuration. Network speeds improved, however parental control support still lacking. Using a Circle Home Plus device but it has compatibility issues. Bitdefender Armor has been added to the Wifi 6 system.

    Great review. Orbi wifi 6E will be release soon. But I still think the company is so greddy in terms of charging for features that other products offer them for free. Great Range but Im not paying top grade for a "prosumer router" and pay $99 a year for features.

  • @hastingb

    I went with the two satellite version to replace my old setup. Google fiber is getting installed and I ordered the 2GB down and 1Gb up option and this wifi router supports up to 2.5Gb downloads. Something that didn't get mentioned in this video but was a major factor in my buying decision. As for the parental controls, they were a huge annoyance on my old system. My kids are grown and and I just don't care about that stuff. I'm not without grips though and the biggest grip that Orbi owners would/should have is the price. Even Apple (back in the their wifi days) had the sense to ad value to their products by throwing in a backup hard drive and Air Play or network printing. And that's my gripe.

    I purchased the AX6000 and use two of my old RBS-50s as wired satellites (they had been wired in my previous Orbi configuration) in addition to the RBS-850 that came with the kit -- for a total of three satellites. All works just fine (albeit no WiFi 6 Cape on the RBS-50s). Regarding Circle and Armor: Remember those were not included with Original RBR-50 either -- they came over time. In terms of WiFi 6 futures, you are probably either going to get devices that support WiFi 6 first OR a router that supports WiFi 6 first... and probably not both.

    And I typically have 30 + devices connected at once.
    My setup is router in end bedroom next to cable modem, cat6 to garage sat, another sat same floor other end of house, one sat in basement.
    Absolutely never an issue with connection, range, or buffering, on anything.
    I have 8 port switch next to router as most of my cameras land there, plus wired to switch in basement office/server media center.
    I have 2.5k security cameras, multiple TV’s streaming devices, iPad, phones, laptops NAS’s, VM’s, smart home hub with many peripherals.
    Only major outage was a week ago from MAJOR wind storms that caused half the state week long power outages.

      UndoubtedProphet Maybe one day you can but the interface for the router is a joke, there are basically no options. They will probably build this up to at least the level of the RBK50 one day but really this is a soft release to early adopters with an unfinished product with virtually NO enable or rather BUILT features from software side, even Netgear customer support acknowledged this. This was a hurried release just to get Wi-Fi 6 products out to market. I will buy this again when they have a 1+2 kit and all the features the RBK50 implemented.

    im not a tech guy. what do you mean by satelite

    • @TheChanClanLife
      @TheChanClanLife  4 года назад +1

      The satellites are the wifi 'repeaters' from the main router (the base Orbi unit that connects to your internet source). The Orbi's (satellite(s) + base router) form a mesh network that takes your internet signal from your cable modem to your wifi devices either directly from the base router broadcasting your wifi signal or via satellites that also broadcast the same wifi signal. Your device connects to the closest or strongest signal, be it from the base router or any of the satellites. The satellites can also connect devices via ethernet cable to the network, even though there is no physical connection to the base or cable modem. The satellite and base communicate via a wireless backhaul separate from wifi traffic and the satellites can connect to the base in a hub and spoke configuration (each satellite talks to the base), or in a daisy chain (each satellite or base can talk to each other). This allows your Wifi to be covered more broadly and increases speeds throughout your wireless footprint area and minimizes dead zones. In short faster wifi in larger spaces.

    • @linkstale
      @linkstale 4 года назад

      TheChanClan ohh ok so hypothetically speaking. If I own a huge building I can buy 1 router and 10 satellites and they’ll give off the same speed even if someone is like 1000 feet from the main router.

    • @TheChanClanLife
      @TheChanClanLife  4 года назад

      Alex Diaz No, the Orbi is meant for about 3000 sq feet of coverage in a residential setting. If you have multiple floors and a large building you probably need multiple routers and dedicated commercial network (repeaters, hubs, etc). The Orbi’s signal will degrade and I don’t think it supports that many satellites

    • @TheChanClanLife
      @TheChanClanLife  4 года назад

I agree with this video about ‘beta’ … and the buffering … net gear do not make it clear on the box or in the box as to the specifics of compatibility…. It’s not until you get stuck ang go looking for online support that you find complex work around with setting up AP and disabling your modem wifi on the actual modem . The price is ‘huge’ … so for all the people preaching how good it is… then great… but if you fall into the category that it or may not be compatible… you will know and learn the pain and disappointment….

    I'm really not looking to shell out 700 bucks for a mesh router (1k for the 3 pack setup).
    It also seems that Netgear has this strange way of releasing garbage and then eventually fixing it with firmware. I have a AC2200 Orbi and oh how that thing gave me headaches. I remember after the return period elapsed they released a firmware that made the thing pretty much unusable. Drops a couple of times an hour requiring a reboot. slow speeds. And pretty much anything else that you don't want happening on your network.
    Today, it's the best darn router I've owned.
    I was going to replace it with the Samsung wifi mesh router and 2 satellites. The performance of the Samsung simply couldn't match the Orbi and it was sent back after 2 days.
    Now my area is due to get Google Fiber this spring. So I need to upgrade to take advantage of the speed increase (I'm at 300mbs no, and will be 1gb when they can run the fiber this spring). I don't think I can go with anything other than another Orbi. But I really don't want to go through firmware hell while the Netgear engineers figure out how their router works.

    Obviously it would not be backwards compatible with the older Orbi mesh systems... they are WiFi 5 (802.11 ac) and NOT WiFi 6 (802.11 ax) and therefore it would be slowed down by these older WiFi 5 systems and would bog the internet down.

    • @TheChanClanLife
      @TheChanClanLife  3 года назад +1

      The prior satellites were backward compatible if you wired them to the router. The issue was they didn't sell more satellites individually when this first launched, so there weren't enough satellites to accommodate the same configuration that people likely had with a 1+2 setup from prior Orbi generations.

    I don't mean to be a jerk, but you don't sound like a good candidate to have upgraded to this system. The standard just released, there are only a handful of devices out that support the standard, and this is a just released Gen 1 product. Particularly if you're using the full feature set, and you do need the extended features of the previous gen Orbi system, it's just not time for you to upgrade yet. Like cars, it's generally not a good idea to get the model that just received a major refresh. Wifi 6 really won't be ready for at least another year. The only reason phones like the new Samsung 10 and iPhone 11 got Wifi 6 support is that those phones will still be in use in 2-3 years when Wifi 6 is actually common. You jumped the gun...

    • @TheChanClanLife
      @TheChanClanLife  4 года назад

      aaron wong I have 4 iPhone 11’s a Desktop and 2 laptops with Wi-Fi 6 so I’d disagree problem is I have about 100 other devices and IoT’s that are not. The backhaul is why I got it for. It’s a consumer device but clearly unfinished, I’ll let the product speak for itself.

    • @aaronwong1977
      @aaronwong1977 4 года назад

      @@TheChanClanLife Sure, but you yourself state that one of the key things you needed was an additional mesh point at your TV that was not yet available for purchase... Solutions only work when they solve all issues, or you're willing to deal with the combination of compromises and gains. Most of the Wifi 6 gains will happen when most/all of the things in your home support wifi 6. Just because it's faster and has additional benefits while functioning on Wifi 6, doesn't mean it will solve other issues that aren't related.

    • @TheChanClanLife
      @TheChanClanLife  4 года назад

      aaron wong was hoping my AC3200 Orbi satellites would be backwards compatible, Netgear wouldn’t answer this pre-purchase so it took someone like me to answer this early that it does NOT except as a wired extension

    • @aaronwong1977
      @aaronwong1977 4 года назад

      For myself, I'm super excited about wifi 6, but I'm not pulling the trigger on any of the gen 1 routers. They cost a lot, and there's no real benefit yet. There just aren't enough devices that support the standard for it to be worth the money. It's not going to be worth the upgrade until most of your IOT devices and for you, your TV, get upgraded. For myself, I need my Macs to support it, and my AppleTV to support it at minimum. I just really feel like you jumped the gun on this. I'm glad the Gen 1 Wifi 6 Orbi system is out. I wouldn't buy it, or recommend it to anyone, but it gives them the opportunity to sort out some things before wifi 6 really goes prime time. I don't think this is something to be angry about. This was bound to be beta hardware/software.

    • @danchanmd
      @danchanmd 4 года назад +1

      @@aaronwong1977 That's the point. If it's "beta" hardware, it seems illogical that Netgear would almost double the retail price to $699.99 which they did. It's just a cautionary video for all those reasons you and I have mentioned.

      I don't know about terrible -- Netgear has had some bad publicity because there were hardware vulnerabilities in a dozen of routers that they just said they were legacy and not addressable because they didn't support it anymore which pretty much makes your router exposed and unusable anymore. The Orbi series was not part of this and has been fairly well maintained. Built-in router level spyware / malware / virus protection with Netgear Armor is a plus. I wouldn't discredit Orbi based on any inherent vulnerabilities.
