Wow. This is far and away the clearest and best explanation of how the Orbi works and how it is supposed to be set up. Thank you! 👍🏽
You're welcome!
I 100% agree.
It is challenging to reassure people who struggle to set up their wifi. I am sure that you helped and informed everyone who watched this video including me. Thank you for this Setup guide!
No problem!
I found your video very informative. You answered two of my many questions. With there was more videos like this. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Agreed
THANK YOU! Tried it this way with Starlink.
Just stopping by to say thanks for creating such a clear, concise and informative video. Everything about this made sense, no scrolling back, just great info. Thanks!
Thanks!
I've been watching so many of these videos to get the answer to the question you ask at 14:28. About the order of the router and switch. Thanks for answering it for me!
Thank you I appreciate the full background--helped me out a lot! Cheers, James
No problem!
THANK YOU for being the ONLY hit on Google that explains how these are be wired. Basically was working off one comment making it sound like they absolutely needed to be daisy chained.
Best explanation of how the Orbi works and how it is supposed to be set up.
Thanks!
I'm planning to get this model and this was very informative. Thanks a lot.
No problem!
Step son having issues with Orbi . He commented he was going to replace his router .. as per vid nothing should be between the modem only unit and the Orbi router. I shared this with him I think it will help . Thanks … I have no experience with these great vid easy to understand .
Hope this helps
Thanks so much dude, all the info on wired backhaul that I needed!
Glad I could help!
Amazing description, it was very interesting and instructive, it cleared up many doubts and I learned a lot, I wish all videos were that easy to understand, thank you very much
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you again for making the video! I have a question about finding the right switch for my network.
I am upgrading my network wiring to cat 6 cables everywhere and adding a POE camera system on every corner of the house. I will have more devices using an internet connection. My current internet speed is 1 Gbps. I plan to increase it to 2 gbps.
I will be using TP-Link Deco AXE5300 Wi-Fi 6E Tri-Band Whole-Home Mesh system but I cannot decide on an unmanaged network switch. I am looking for a switch that can support 2 gigs with 12 ports at least. I see some switches has some specific ports that supports multi gig but what I need is someting that can support mutil gig on every port. Is this something duable? or do you have any advice on a switch?
If i want more satelites does it need to be the specific or the same brand but cheper exmple i have orbi rbk 752 can i connect to it rbk 352 lidé satelite?
Thank you so much for this video, it was exactly what I needed. You answered every question I had. Truly appreciate.
Glad it was helpful!
Great job! Very clear. Answered all of the questions I had.
Glad it helped!
I know this video is old but you seem knowledgeable compared to other videos I’ve watched. I have a Nighthawk A6000 for gaming and streaming to RUclips. I have this Orbi mesh now to put my home’s security system on which is monitored by a company. In this case having the mesh network as a separate network is a good thing, right? I didn’t do a bridge or AP. I just plugged the orbi into my nighthawk and all seems okay so far except that I have no idea now how to access the orbi router to log in. That’s the only issue I have so far. Am I okay like this as long as it works?
Great video! Very informative and pretty straight forward. Question, for backhaul from router to satellite, do you still need to configure something in router settings for the satellite to get internet connection or does it automatically distribute internet connection when hard wired? Thanks. :)
Thanks! Everything is automatically done after initial setup in the Orbi app doesn't matter if it's wired or wireless backhaul.
Hello I just bought an orbi star lite but just learnt I need an orbi router on the package of my orbi satellite it suggests RBR850 or RBR750 router neither of these come up when I google it thru Best Buy any suggestions u could give me please ?
Great video , I have an AT&T Uverse Router/Modem, I assume we hook up Orbi's router to my AT&T router/modem and disable the "router" functionality" of the router/modem? Thanks for your time.
Thanks! That is correct
Great video!
What’s the wifi coverage like for example at the bottom of your garden? Can you still get strong wi fi signal?
Thanks, depends on obstacles. Range varies quite a bit based on location, more obstructions typically equals less range. But this one had pretty good range from what I remember.
Thank you for covering everything, very educational
No problem
Your videos are so helpful.. THANK YOU! I just yesterday purchased the Orbi RBK752 after watching your comparison with the EERO 6 Pro. Can you explain if IPV6 should be active on the ORBI? I have an Xbox Series X and want to be sure the NAT settings will show OPEN. Since you reference Xbox in a few videos I thought you might be the one to know. Hope to hear from you. Thanks again for such great videos, I am now subscribed.
Thanks! Orbi does support IPv6 granted I'm using IPv4. I did a test on the Xbox series X, the NAT type shows open.
Hi there I just connected the orbi wfi6 system without the satelite and still my internet is slow. what am I doing wrong?
Great explanation! Thank you
Hey Mr. LanPet - very good set up coverage. One Q: i just upgraded and installed a new orbi two piece wifi just as you show in the video. I upgraded from an Arris 3.0 modem/router to a CM1200 Nighthawk modem only and hooked to my Orbi -wfi is excellent. However original config included a GS108 v4 Netgear switch with 4 hardwired Ethernet connections in my house to PCs and TVs.But since replacing Arrris and hooking up Orbis the wifi is faster than the ethernet direc connects . What gives??
Is your switch hooked up to a node that’s on wireless backhaul? Maybe your devices like your PC and TVs support better WiFi speeds and are capped to 100Mbps for Ethernet. Could be a number of things
Thanks for a great guide :-) How do I investigate if my current devices will work with e.g. Orbi 6000 via wifi. I am concerned buying it and then half of my devices wont work or will cabels always work?
Thanks! If you're devices support Wi-Fi or ethernet, they should work fine with the Orbi or pretty much another mesh system or router. These things are designed to be backwards compatible, so your devices don't have to have Wireless AX to work on this. They could be Wireless N (like some of my ring cameras) and they work just fine.
This vid is such a big help. Should be at millions of views. Not many info on backhaul
This clearly helped me out on backhaul
I appreciate it. Thanks!
@landpet do I need to be in AP mode to use wired backhaul. I’m using Orbi AX4200
No, AP mode is when you have another router (non Orbi) and you want that to be your main router and just have the Orbi extend your wifi
When I Google this, all I see is old info. I bought a three unit system about four months ago with RBR and RBS 750’s. Does this system simultaneously transmit both 2.4 and 5 GHz from each device as needed by the attached device?? Old info says no, but when I look at my network map on the app and at the devices on each, I see both frequency devices attached to each ORBI as needed. If that is the case, then I don’t really need to designate my networks as either 2.4G and 5G. Just trying to understand and simplify my thinking.
Thank you. Very clear and informative. This will be helpful in planning and building my home network.
Glad it was helpful!
thanks for this great video, Does the Orbi AX4200 can handle my 1000/1000 ( 1gb ) mb/s internet speed wirelessly? thanks you
It can handle your internet speeds with Ethernet devices for sure. My internet is not as fast so I haven’t been able to see how fast it can go. I will say that it also depends on the WiFi device you’re using, I don’t think my iPhone 12 Pro can go that fast either because it’s using 2x2 MIMO instead of 4x4 MIMO which tend to come with the newer laptops. I want to say yes assuming you have a WiFi 6 4x4 MIMO device, at least that it will get close but I haven’t tested that
My current wifi mesh system Asus ZenWifi xt8 (1 Router + 2 Satellites). My ISP has provided with a Modem/Router as a single unit. So, have to use the built-in router. So, what I did was , I put the Asus xt8 router in Router mode, with " Static IP", taking its own WAN IP from the ISP Router, and using its OWN LAN IPs with its OWN DHCP. . I tried using them with Wireless backhaul, but got dropped speeds at the mesh point to about 200 mbps. But now I have connected them with "Wired Backhaul". But Still, the MAX throughput seems to be around 500 mbps @ 10 ft from the Mesh point. Please let me know what's your take on the issue with so much drop in speed inspite of " Wired Backhaul". Do you think if I change to something like the Netgear Orbi RBK 853 will sort the speed issue ?
I wonder if once you have the external switch connected could you hang a drive off of that unmanaged switch... Thank you for sharing...
If you're talking about a NAS drive, it should work fine off the unmanaged switch
Great Review!! I’m also thinking of upgrading to the Orbi 6 AX6000 RBK252.
If I was to place the main router and modem in my main bedroom, would I be able to connect the satellite directly into my second bedrooms CAT6 data port wall jack? Or , would I have to physically run a second Ethernet cable from my router to the satellite unit to take advantage of (wired back haul)
Does plugging my satellite directly into my Wall Ethernet port work?
Thank you!
Thanks!
If your wall ethernet is connected to your main router, then yes it works. There needs to be a physical ethernet connection from the satellite to the router; now that can be a direction connection from satellite to router or it can go through a wall outlet, a switch, another satellite before it makes its way to the main router. The important thing to note is, that there needs to be an ethernet from the satellite all the way back to the router even with something in between so as long as it makes it all the way to the router. Only then is it considered wired backhaul. Hope this helps!
I live on a property near a friend's primary residence, about 250 yds away from a modem that I can't connect to as it only has a weak two-bar signal. If I buy this combo do I simply plug one into the existing router and the other into my home via a power source?
That’s probably a bit far.. if there is absolutely nothing in between your two homes or very little, then you can try it. You could also try a more powerful mesh WiFi like the Netgear Orbi RBKE963. There’s something else entirely you can try called a wireless bridge point to point. You can just get a regular router or mesh WiFi at that point and plug it to this thing. This wireless bridge works for line of sight, meaning no objects in between.
Your first tip answered my questions regarding the router modem combo. Thx , very helpful
Glad it was useful
Great video. I just ordered the Orbi AX6000. I currently have a dedicated Cat5e line running to the living room tv. That location also happens to be an ideal location for one of the Orbi satellites. If I take that Cat5e line previously used for the tv and plug it into one of the satellites, then plug the tv back into the satellite, will I lose any speed to the tv? Will adding the satellite and wireless devices connected to it, essentially bog down the line? I of course want the benefits of the wired backhaul but I don’t necessarily want to lose speed to the tv, as the tv is the priority to me. I have a 1gig speed from Xfinity. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Thanks,
No, you will not lose any speed if you take the cat5e line and plug it to the satellite and go from the Satellite to the TV.
No, connecting devices to it will not bog down the line. Connecting lots of Wi-Fi devices will slow down other Wi-Fi devices, they will not slow down ethernet connected devices.
The only way you will bog down the line if all your devices are using the internet at the same time, at that point it's slowing down the router side devices as well.
Hi, you know how to switch the Orbi RBR50 only to 2.4 Ghz? because my smoker Traeger 1300 controller only works on that frequency?
It should automatically connect to the 2.4, if not, you probably can go to the Orbi app and separate your wifi names between 2.4 and 5GHz. Then just put in the 2.4GHz SSID info.
First off your videos are very informative, you do a good job. My question is I was looking to upgrade to a mesh system and was looking at the orbi and eero. My big concern is that my wife has two HP envy printers connected wireless to her laptop and desktop. Which system will work best with these printers or is there a better mesh system that I am not looking at. Thanks
Either one will work fine. Here is a breakdown from what I’ve tested.
Most powerful: ASUS ET8
Best bang per buck: TP Link Deco X68
Long term tested solid mesh WiFi: eero Pro 6 and Orbi RBK752
From these four, the TP Link Deco X68 has the slowest wireless backhaul speeds but delivers great performance considering its price
Thank you for this very informative and detailed video.
I have a question regarding this particular Orbi model in option #5 as I'm planning to use ethernet wired backhaul
Will this free the third band which was dedicated for wireless backhaul and use it to serve client devices?
I'm really looking for a clear answer about this as I couldn't find one online.
No problem. From what I remember, Yes, it frees it up for devices to connect but I'm currently testing the Meshforce M3, so I can't check as of now but when I do hook it up, I'll try to remember and check that.
I need help. So right now I have cox and it came with the panoramic wifi box. Apparently it’s a modem/router. And now I purchased the Orbi. Can I connect the two???? Do I need to disable (bridge mode) on my cox router/modem box? And then I can connect the two?
Yes, I would disable the modem/router combo then connect the orbi
can i use moca and use coax cable to orbi satellite? will that broadcast faster speeds? im only getting 200 when im on wifi and paying for 500. thanks
Yes you can go through MoCA, should be faster assuming you got a newer version of MoCA
This was very helpful.
I had trouble setting up my wired back off today so I had to go with wireless.
I have a router modem combo that I cannot put in bridge mode for various reasons.
I was trying to hook the Orbi up to the router /modem and then run wired back haul but it just won’t work.
My assumption is the router /modem is assigning an IP address to the satellite that the orbi router is not expecting thus the orbi can’t find the wired back haul .
The satellites are not connected directly to the Orbi. They are connected to data drops in other rooms . Those data drops go back to a network switch which is connected to the router modem combo.
So far the wireless backhaul seems to be working fine but I’m trying to work out a solution to get the wire backhaul working while running two networks.
This is a great video thanks for the lesson. This might sound like a dumb question but if I have my satellites in different rooms (the are currently connected wirelessly) how do I connect them via Ethernet cable? I don’t want to see a long cable just running from room to room. Is there another way?
Most people run cables inside the walls, so it's not exactly an easy solution therefore wireless backhaul is the easy solution. This thing actually provides fairly good wireless backhaul speeds, you can also go with the absurdly expensive Netgear Orbi RBKE963 and that one works very well with wireless backhaul also.
this is very informative. thank you!
You're welcome!
Hey great video
Quick question just up grading from Orbi RB 40 to orbi RBI’s 753 WiFi 6, wondered if I can keep existing password ?
Thanks, Yes you can. Just set that when it asks
Thank you very much.thatwas so usable
Glad it helped!
i just upgraded to 1 gig fiber from Spectrum and tehy installed a modem. my home has a central "media" box that outside lines come into (cable). from there i have home runs to all my rooms for cat5 needs. i plugged my modem into a "switch" and from there to my Orbi router, orbi satelite, other cat5 needs. based on your video this should not work. seems to be ok for now. thoughts?
getting 1 gig speeds.
wondering if i should change my switch to a similar(TP-Link Multi-WAN Wired VPN Router | Up to 4 Gigabit WAN Ports ) and change my orbi to "bridge"... thoughts?
If it works then great but I don't know your exact setup with your settings. You mentioned modem, is it possible a modem/router combo? Are you using a managed switch? A router uses DHCP to assign IP addresses to devices, so the switch would need to connect to the router so then the other ports available from the switch would be usable with valid local network IP Addresses. Now if you have a modem/router combo, it can use that as well because it's still a router.
I guess the question is, what are you trying to do? If your current setup works fine, then no need to change anything unless something is missing.
Ditto, thank you for this. I found the answer I was looking for too.
Glad I could help!
Do you know if it is possible to power the RBR850 with POE? Do Not use the 110v plug.
Do you also know if you can use a POE switch to power the satellite’s rbs850. I can’t seem to get a straight answer yes or no. If I need to use a 110 plug for the RBR850 that is fine… I am more looking to power the satellites with POE.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
I don't know the answer to that question but I would assume you cannot power router or satellite with PoE. Seems like they would take quite a bit of power for the wifi signal itself among other things.
This video was very helpful. Thank you!
No problem
Can I add a orbi rbr 40 …it’s a router ..to my existing rbk 50 system ..as a satellite ? Will orbi during setup process ask me if I want it as a router or in bridge mode to use as a satellite
I’m not sure but I don’t believe so
Great guide for power users, thank you for the review and such great information.
If you have any highlights on the parental control for these things it would be great.
Thanks again!
Thanks! I haven't played with this but Netgear uses an app called "circle" that lets your access parental controls. They have a free and a paid version depending if you want more features or not. Hope this helps!
I have a lot of videos in the queue but eventually I can make a video on this as well.
@Taylor Benjamin Thanks
'power users' won't be needing this guide, btw
Excellent video. I have a Netgear Orbi 5 and want to move all the settings to my new Orbi Pro 6. Is it easily done? Can I just import my cfg from 5 to 6? Thanks
Thanks! I don't have the Orbi 5 so I'm not sure if that's possible.
That was an awesome instructional video. For a two satellite system, can the satellites be daisy-chained via their ethernet connections or should they both be direct connected back to the Orbi router?
Thanks! Either way works. The only crucial part is connecting the router to the modem directly. After that you can introduce a switch, you can daisy chain, all up to you
Hi. What if I connect the Orbi in a ethernet port in a wall? Will it work? Or do I really need a modem or switch?
If your wall is providing you internet access then that's all you need.
Question, if I wanted to add an additional satellite and do Ethernet backhaul would the ethernet cable run from one satellite to the other satellite or would both satellites be connected to the Orbi router
Thanks
either one is fine, as long as the ethernet makes it all the way back to the main router and is less than 100 meters.
I have 2 orbi routers (they were in the apartment I moved into) can I turn one into a satellite?
I don't know, I would assume so if it's the same model but I'm not sure since I haven't tried that.
is it possible to connect Orbi 850 to a hotspot device via cat5 cable and how to do the same wirelessly between Orbit 850 and a hotspot device?
I haven’t tried that, it just depends if it can pick up your ISP. It may work but these things are designed for home internet not for hotspots, generally speaking
great explanation showing different scenarios in the real world, thank you.
you're welcome!
Hi is thanks a lot of have two questions please:
1- I have 4 linksys velop/ with a wired back haul for a 3 bedroom villa . The one at the top bedroom keeps dropping. So I changed the placement of the router and so noticed the furthest one keeps dropping. This made me conclude that the signal even though through the wires is weak as I checked and determinate then cables . no other explanation I could think of. Thoughts ?
2- The Velop requires a “star” topology. Can the Orbi support a “daisy chain” topology and hopefully this might solve the issue of long wires ?
Any other solution you can think of?
No problem!
1. Check your firmware is the same across all Velops and that they are all up to date. Check the Ethernet cables are pushed in all the way. Check that the Ethernet cable works fine by plugging a laptop to it for a day or two to see if it disconnects randomly if you don’t have a network analyzing tool.
2. Orbi should handle star or daisy from what I’ve seen. I only have the 2 pack for this but I do have the RBKE963 and that does daisy or star. I’m surprised velop only does star.
Hi Sir, great video! Which modem do you suggest for higher end speeds? As everywhere these days, modems and routers come in a combo and I can’t find a standalone model to handle higher speeds. Thanks!
Thanks! I suggest the arris sb8200, link is hopefully in the description. You do have to ask your ISP if the modem is compatible with them.
My orbi router had a solid ring of magenta on the LED. i then proceeded to reset it. After the reset the LED never came back on but all of the lights on the back of the router is green. any tips or help? Please?
Magenta means it's not connecting (essentially there is an issue). LED not on means it's working just fine.
Hi! I just purchased Orbi AX6000. I have a question regarding the Orbi SSID name. I have a modem from my internet provider with a wifi network SSID. When setting up Orbi, do i assign a different SSID name for my ORBI than my current internet network SSID name? Or name it the same? Also, do I connect the orbit router to my modems LAN1 port or WAN port? Thank you
Name it the same and connect it to your modem. If you have a modem router combo, disable the router portion of your modem by placing it in bridge mode. That’s what I recommend. You need to check the model number of your modem to find out which port to connect it to. It’s usually the first port
Great video so many thanks for all your efforts!
I still can't get my ethernet to work through wall jacks. Wireless works.
I have Orbi with router and 1 Orbi SAT and a switch.
My TV is hardwired to switch and works fine.
There are wall jacks for ethernet but when I connect computer to wall jack it does not work via ethernet - again, wireless works
I tried resetting network stuff like ipconfig, etc. I tried powering all off and restarting - still not working via ethernet (but TV is)
Only message in various resetting that I got was media disconnected error so I tried all solutions suggested on internet but still get same message.
I have modem to Orbi router then Orbi router to switch and also have SAT Orbi connected to the ethernet jack on wall.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
I don't know how your ethernets through your walls are connected. If it's ethernet cables going throughout your place, make sure they are all connected to your switch. Ethernet typically doesn't split unless there is a switch or something, so maybe you only have one ethernet jack connected throughout your wall and on the other side, the TV is using it. But the other ports are probably not connected on one side, so when you connect them on the other side, it's just an unconnected ethernet cable. This is my best guess based on the information you've provided. Hopefully that helps.
For option 5, can I hook my satellite up with a cat5E cable.
It's already in my wall? Changing cable isn't an option. Will the cat5e connection work better than. Wifi?
Yes cat5e will work better than wifi. Cat5e supports gigabit.
Does the Orbi allow selecting channels on the 5ghz radio by user? I'm asking cause I bought the Deco x60, and it doesnt. It preselects channel 44 based on the region you bought it from (U.S in my case) whereas I want it to use 144 or 149. Thanks!
I don't have this in use at the moment so I'm not sure. Generally speaking, ASUS is the router/mesh with most options.
Thanks a lot for putting what i think is the best video. I have a question though; i live in the EU in appartment building and I'm on the 4th floor, and my ISP is Sky wifi, i use their wifi hub which gives me FTTC. My garage where i want to extend my internet coverage to is 25-28 meters away on the ground floor on the same side of the building but displaced i.e. not vertically located from where my balcony is. I'm planning on getting an orbi wifi 6. How can i go about that? I'm sure that the wifi hub Sky provides doesn't allow me to disable the router function & therefore I'm weary about ending up with two networks with IP conflicts etc. What would you recommend? Will having the orbi router connected in AP mode plus having a couple of satellites work? I'm desperate for a good solution and no one i spoke to here seems to know what they're talking about. Thanks again and apologies for the lengthy text.
Thanks!
If you run it in access point mode it should be ok. My worry is that 25 to 28 meters is fairly far if there are obstructions in place. You may need to try a more powerful router if this doesn’t work. Either an Asus et12, deco be63 or even more powerful Orbi 970.
Thank you so much for your prompt and insightful response. So if i hook an orbi 960 router in AP mode to my Sky wifi hub, and add an orbi satellite or two it should work, right? What do i need to do to put the orbi 960 in AP mode? Any special manual set up or would it automatically go in AP mode as soon as i connect it to the wifi hub? Would there by any IP conflict? Thank you once more!😊
Also, would an Orbi 963 be ok? I can't see the Orbi 970 on their website?
Very helpful video. Answered most of my questions. I just have another one. My isp provided modem is a modem/router. Will everything you explained work by just bridging my modem/router to the mesh router? Then proceed to using switches or wiring to the satellite etc?
Glad to hear it was helpful.
1. Setting you modem/router combo to bridge mode, disables the router portion of your modem/router combo. This has nothing to do with your Netgear Orbi yet. Disabling the router from the modem/router combo will let the Netgear Orbi become the router once you connect the Orbi router to your modem/router combo via ethernet.
2. From there, feel free to connect an unmanaged switch to your Netgear Orbi router and connect the remaining satellites to it via ethernet or wireless.
@landpet I have ziply fios, so I get network in as input to my main network hub in my home and I have bunch of network ports at various rooms with a switch in between. The fios device is in the garage. Not sure if it's a modem. In the cable box. Can I connect these devices to these network ports on walls and get wired back haul setup?
Typically fios has something called an ONT. That's similar to my current setup which is in the garage. I go from that ONT to my router then I have an ethernet going from my router to a switch and to the satellite from there. Assuming the ethernet is going through all the rooms, then it would be considered wired backhaul
@@landpet Got it thanks!
Good morning. I have multiple out buildings which i have ran cat 6 cable to. If I'm understanding correctly i should purchase a modem, router and unmanaged switch for my main distribution distribution point then i would need 3 satellites to be operational under one networking? Thank you for your help!
I should add that from one out building to another would be "daisy chained" if I'm using the correct terms?
Sure that would work assuming the Ethernet cable doesn't exceed 100 meters as that is the theoretical limit.
Thank you very much
Can the satellite connect to the satellite instead of the router? If I move it do I have to resync it again?
Satellite can connect to the satellite. It will automatically resync once it’s been setup. Just plug it in and wait and you should be good
Quality video!! Thanks again. Just curious if you know anyone who is mining helium with this sort of router. I have a few of them working successfully but this orbi at my uncles is different from what I’m use to. I have to port forward on it using the 44158 code and TCP but not sure if there are other things to consider with this? 🤔
Thanks! I’m not mining helium so not sure
Great video, thanks for the break down

I have OrOl Router RBR750, is it okay to upgrade to the rbk752 or TO link Deco XE75) pro. Thank you. I watch you a lot on RUclips
Both good, Deco has the wifi 6e capability so I would prefer that. Thanks for watching!
Nice job. Thanks
No problem
Can I re-use my old satellite orbi RBS20 with AX3000 router.
I believe it's a no but I'm no 100%
Can you connect two orbi routers together or does it have to be an orbi satellite and orbi router?
I don't have two Orbi routers to test that, I believe you can but again no way to verify it.
I have an Orbi AC3000 and wondering if I can add a 4th, 5th and 6th Orbi to my existing 3
I haven’t tried it but according to this site you cannot mix WiFi 5 and WiFi 6 Orbis. www.theverge.com/2020/6/30/21274645/netgear-orbi-rbk752-mesh-router-wifi-6-nighthawk-rax50
I really appreciate your video and I think you did a really good job.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great Video super informative, I do have a question in the video at 4:36 you said you would have to connect two Ethernet cables if you have 2 gigabits. I currently have a 1 gigabit connection would I need to hook up two cables and if so how do I do that? Thanks!
No problem!
With your connection, you just use 1 ethernet cable from your modem to your router, then from any other port from the router to the satellite. The second port is only reserved when you have internet speeds of more than a gigabit in which you need to enable link aggregate in the options.
@@landpet Thank you so much for replying back! So I just checked I actually have more than a gigabit. My ISP is Comcast and my plan is for 1200 Mbps, so a bit over a gigabit, I’m I still able to use 1 Ethernet? Again thank you!
what about connecting the router to the satellite without the switch can that be done?
Yes
I’m sorry if this is addressed in the video and I just didn’t understand it…we built a house out in the country and there are zero internet providers in our area. Therefore we have to use a mobile hotspot for our internet. We’ve been using a Netgear Nighthawk but this looks like more of what we need as they can be linked and expand coverage. My question is this…our service is provided by AT&T via a SIM card in our Nighthawk…does this system work that way? Can it use a SIM card to connect to the internet though AT&T or does it need an actual internet service like Spectrum?
So that's a great question. This does not accept a SIM card, this thing needs internet like Spectrum to connect to it however I believe (it's been a while since I've used this) this can operate in "Access Point Mode", (I know some of the TP Link Deco's (X55, XE75, etc) and the ASUS ET8 can) which means you can connect it to your netgear nighthawk and run this in access point mode which will take the signal from the nighthawk and expand it. Hope this helps!
Option 5: my internet provider just ran an Ethernet cable to my satellite and when it’s plugged in via Ethernet, the satellite doesn’t work. If I unplug the Ethernet cable the satellite works via wireless. Please help?
Your videos are fascinating
I am using option #5 with the Orbi system using 1 router and 2 satellites. I have 1Gigabit wifi plan and I get around 900 Mbps from my speed test in the orbi app which is great! But I noticed that I get various different speeds on a separate Ookla app.
For example I get around 90 Mbps doing a speed test on my phone. 350 Mbps on my laptop (wirelessly connected) and 700 Mbps on my Playstation (wired connection).
I feel like I should be getting at least 700 Mbps on all my devices. Do you have any idea why this is happening?
Getting 700Mbps on all your devices will be difficult. If your phone has wifi 6 and you're close enough to the router, you should get around 600Mbps, farther away you get, the slower it gets. Laptops are typically faster than phones but this all depends on the laptop you're using, if you have wifi 6 with a 4*4 mimo lion the laptop, you should get faster speeds. On Ethernet devices you can get to the 900 assuming the device itself supports it.
at 4:45 time stamp of your video, you mentioned if your ISP provides more than 1 GIGabit of speed, than you would need to hook up additional ethernet cable from your modem to the second port on the main orbi router ?
I have 1,200 MBPS of speed from my ISP. THE AX4200 RKB752 system, on the main dedicated WAN internet port, only supports up to 1 gigabit of speed. ARe you suggesting I need to hook up second ethernet cable from my modem to the second ethernet port on the main orbi router to get access to the remaining speed ?
Your modem needs to support it as well but here's an article that applies to the RBK752 among many other models:

HI - I have 1 Orbi router and 3 satellites that are connected by Cat 8 cables with a couple of unmanaged gigabit switches in between - am having problem that I seem to have lower speed when the Cat 8 connects the satellites than I do if they are connected over the Orbi WiFi - am thinking my builders may have wired the cat 8 connectors wrongly as I seem to only get 100mb speed via the wires when I get 600mb when I use WiFi - or are the unmanaged switches not compatible with the cat 8 cables - am waiting for 10gig switches to arrive….
As you mentioned, check the switch to see if that’s limiting you. Just as a heads up, even with a 10Gb switch, you’re not going to get those speeds everywhere, the router can’t go that fast. I also have a 10Gb switch
Thank you for this video. It was really helpful. I wanted to ask you, what should I do if my router is on first floor and satellite is on third and my iPhone keeps connecting to the router and not the satellite which is much closer? Should I reduce signal strength of the router to 50%?
No problem! The simple way is to turn off wifi and turn it back on your iPhone but that will be no fun and make a mesh system pointless. Maybe you can reduce the output of one vs the other or it may be an issue with the firmware. I don't remember this Orbi giving me issues like that so I can't think of many reasons. One thing to note is that even with a "weaker" wifi signal, you can still possibly get faster internet speeds if you have a wireless backhaul setup, granted this is not the case in most instances but I'm trying to give out anything that comes to mind at this point.
@@landpet thank you. I will try to reduce signal strength. If I’m getting 2/3s of my speed on the third floor. But router is on first, should I leave it alone?
Hi, I have the same Orbi ax4200 & Arris SufBoard SB8200 modem but I am having issues setup the mesh. I can’t get to connect the Orbi app to the Mesh network. I receive message saying WiFi not detected. Did you use the app to successfully setup your WiFi?
Additionally both modem and mesh router are a day old. I know modem works because I used my existing Google Mesh WiFi successfully
Yes I used the Orbi app to setup this mesh. Worked fine for me. I’m assuming you’re plugging in the Orbi router (via the yellow internet port) directly to the modem. Also just a heads up, anytime you’re switching routers you must restart the modem even if it’s working.
What about speed degradation if i keep going through the switches? I currently have 1Gbps Internet but plan on upgrading to a 2Gbps. If each port only supports 1Gbps, would i need 2 ports connected to each device (including switch to and from)? And would i need to do any etherchannel configurations? Thanks in advance, absolutely valuable information you have given us! 👍
Great questions!
1. In theory, it shouldn't slow down so as long as the ethernet connection is less than a 100 meters. Ethernet supports full duplex which means it can send/receive at the same time and switches support that as well. Now hubs on the other hand will slow down because they share connections.
2. So that's called Link Aggregation (connecting more ports to add the speeds to get to your 2 Gbps) and it does get a bit complicated.
3. Instead of Link Aggregation, I would opt for routers and unmanaged switches that can support 10Gbps, with that, you don't need any special setup. Well you do need cat6 and above cables to get those speeds. I would just opt for Cat7 cables at that point. Your computer does need to support it as well.
Best explanation video. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
LOVE THIS VIDEO!! PLEASE HELP ME....i have a netgear orbi ac3000 (RBR50 router and RBS50 satellite) with 1 satellite.the router is in my home and the satellite is in my shop beside my house. i have the router and satellite connected to each other by ethernet cable (backhaul) and the ethernet cable is buried from my house to my shop. my question is, i get 500mb download speed wirelessly in my home where the router is but i only get 90mb download speed tops wirelessly in my shop where the satellite is? can you please tell me why and what i can do to get better speed from the satellite? thank you in advance
Thanks! I'm assuming your performing the speed test with the same device (like your wifi phone or something)? If you're testing it with different devices, let's say you have a computer in your home and your laptop in your shop, make sure your laptop has the capability to go faster. Long story short, please make sure you're performing the speed test with the same wifi device (like your phone or something). If not, make sure the ethernet cable (make sure your ethernet cable is less than 100 meters) is not faulty since you should be getting similar speeds.
Hi, is it also possible to use the router and replace my modem, meaning my fiber cable directly connecting to the orbi router.
Thanks.
You need a modem, unless you get one that’s built in which is something I personally don’t recommend.
@@landpet so I cant use the Orbi router as a modem as well?because my current modem is from my ISP and it’s a modem with router functionality
I have the Gateway router/modem combo from AT&T. I successfully connected this system last night but I am getting the same speeds. I believe it’s because I didn’t “bridge” and turned off wifi capabilities. Can you tell you how to do that? Do I go to the AT&T modem/router settings or the Orbi settings to do that? It’s frustrating because it seems like I’m getting the same speeds because both wifis are on.
The easiest thing to do is to call ATT and ask them but typically there's a sticker on your existing modem with an IP address or some other address that allows you to go-to to access it's settings to then disable the router by putting it in bridge mode.
Thank you very much for this clear video!
I have a question though, when using option 5, can the satellites be moved further away from the router (compared to wireless)?
For example, can I have a router and a satellite in my home and another satellite in my garage (very weak signal here with single router). All set up in option 5. Thanks again!
No problem! It depends on your place but typically they’re supposed to be right around 40 ft away from each other. You have to play with the placement to get optimal speeds. One thing to note is that if the satellite is closer to the garage (if not even placed there) compared to your single router configuration, you will still get better WiFi signals in the garage.
@@landpet thanks again, great info😁
great explanation- any ideas on how to deal with the rbr750 dropping connections and not connecting to 5g when devices are well within range? thanks
Thanks, check for firmware updates, aside from that it may just be a software bug or you may have a faulty unit. Best to ask Netgear for something like that
@@landpet thank you for the reply- my system is still in warranty but out of tech support contract so they made me purchase a 3-month support contract to trouble shoot- took them 1.5 hours and eventually we rolled back the firmware two versions- we'll see if that helps.
Is it OK to buy some older generation Orbi satellites and will they connect to the product that you were demonstrating?
I haven't personally tested this Orbi with older generations because I don't have them but from what this says, then it's a no, they are not compatible: kb.netgear.com/000061570/Are-older-Orbi-WiFi-satellites-compatible-with-Orbi-WiFi-6-Systems
