Can these pedals BEAT the KING OF TONE? | Gear Corner

    Is the King of Tone really so unique? Can you get that tone with other pedals too? How do they compare? So many questions... :)
    And most importantly: what about the feel of these pedals? Sometimes gear will sound very similar but the feel is still miles apart. That's what matters most to the player, that's what inspires you to play more.
    This is not a sponsored video. It's just a comparison I wanted to do for a long time and it's fun

    REALLY great shootout format, man! Love the way you've sectioned up the comparisons and labeled them, and especially how you gave us a low-end shootout! (Wampler pedals generally have flat low-end fully CCW on their bass knobs, as you stated).
    My current favorite BB-based pedal is one nobody would expect: the Rogue Blues Distortion. Real open and dynamic, but they changed components in such a way that it's weird to dial in.
    Another fav of mine is the left side of the Tone City King of Blues. It appears to be a direct clone of the Marshal BB Mk1. Right side is a klone. Fully independent channels. Two great clones in one.
    My Rowin Bluesy is fine for my fly rig.
    Blues Drivers, especially with the bass mod, have a lot in common with a bluesbreaker, tonally at least. Decent cheap clones are the Mooer Blues Mood and the TC Electronic Cinders - both true bypass.

    I have the Pantheon and really like it. It's great at the edge of breakup and the higher gain type stuff due to the three different gain settings and alternate clipping options. The Presence knob is a bit weird where unity is almost all the way off. Its a pretty bright sounding pedal though, even with the bass that comes through. I really like it on my v40 with my strat because it makes the strat heard.

    Whether the goal is to find an alternative that close to the KOT or just to find an awesome sounding bluesbreaker style OD for its own sake, the Blues crab and foxcatcher seem to be the best in my opinion. Foxcatcher may be better as a KOT alternative bc of the boost but for a lower price, two blues crabs would actually probably do the same job and sound a bit closer to a KOT.
    Another worthy mention for the blues breaker category is the snouse Black box 2. Just got it after a few month wait and have to say it’s probably the most versatile bluesbreaker style od with the switching options. You can kinda get into high gain Marshall tones if you want or just get classic bluesbreaker tones that are super accurate according to those who own actual bluesbreakers. Whether it’s better than these other clones, I can’t say. I haven’t AB’d BB pedals together as the various clones are never in the same store together.

    I think especially in the high gain territory the Foxcatcher was the only one to reproduce the characteristic behaviour of the KOT, namely that it's almost as if there are two guitars at the same time - a clean one in the front and another distorted one behind it. All the other pedals only produced a "distorted-only" characteristics from what I hear.

  • @vag8sg
    @vag8sg 9 месяцев назад

    Hi, Kris! I' m big fan of your channel. I love the content and the tasteful playing!
    One thing that drives me crazy when I run an overdrive through a clean amp is to hear the clean signal of the guitar. I know this gives clarity and "clear" overdrive effect but it's a matter of personal taste and I feel it like the pedal is hitting a roof dynamically. From this video, for example I can hear that the foxcatcher does let a very obvious amount of signal passing through undistorted.
    Could you please rank all 5 to understand which has the less amount of this effect because I still enjoy a non mid humpy pedal. Thank you in advance!

  • @stanislavmigra
    @stanislavmigra 4 года назад

    Great video Kris. Very infromative. I have no bonds to KoT and what I see and hear from many demos, it is pedal, you have to feel playnig yourself under your fingers, rather then giving any overwhelming sound in demo, so hard to judge it like this.
    Wampler Pantheon have very smooth creamy sound to the overdrive, that I will not compare it here with other KoT/Bluesbreaker pedals, as I expect them all to somewhat to the old Marshall amp, that have bite and some agression to it. But man, does it deliver with full gain on. Feels like it was the only pedal build to be really cranked all the way up. Id say, it reminds me more of the mythical D-style overdrive
    JHS Morning glory have very interesting "bark/growl" to it, like touch of fuzz or what to it. I noticed this with many JHS pedals (twintwelve, kilt, charlie brown). It sounds like lot of fun to mess around with that.
    Foxcatcher was kinda disapointement to me, as it have to my ears strange uppermid hump, that started to annoy me after short while.
    Moer Blues crab, big surprise and I will say sounding closest to KoT, hard to judge from video as KoT to me looks like all about the player experience (like driveing good car, you might not to see it from outside or even inside, if you are not driveing it).
    Funny thing is, that this video drives me away from that kind of pedal, as those sounds I kinda can get from my Marshall using boost pedal, haha.
    Last time Im having pretty heavy GAS for tweed like pedals (ie Catalinbread Formula 55 or Mad Professor Tweedy drive), or the new Mythos Lark (damn that things drives me craaaazy, haha) ...
    Again, great great video, very good work. Thank you very much for it, it looks like pleeenty of work.

    Pantheon seems to be the closest if you really want a KoT type pedal. I really like the fox catcher on it’s own, but but it’s a bit too bassy sounding, I feel like those nice tones would get lost in a mix. I really like the morning glory, that less bassy, crispness is what will shine through in a mix, that one is the winner for me

      Yes they can sound very similar under certain circumstances. The differences show immediately though if you swap guitars or play something different. But if you're tweaker and want different combinations of sounds out of it, forget it. The controls are very strange. I don't use the "Nature" (presence) dial at all. Both the tone and gain knobs have a tremendous effect on volume. It's hard to enjoy what it has to offer in a quiet setting. :)

    Try the older version of the Wampler Pinnacle Deluxe. It's a dist pedal but really more of an overdrive-dist that really captures the classic Marshall JMP "brown sound". Most high end boutique dist pedals sound great with your guitar volume dimed but sound thin and tinny when you roll your guitar volume back. This is where the older Pinnacle Deluxe shines. It interacts quiet well with your guitar volume giving you a variety of tones. The V2 of the Pinnacle isn't as good IMHO.

    Great video man! I've been trying to find an "inspiring home-tone" setup since all of this quarantine chaos started and was wondering if I could get your opinion. Is the answer a low wattage >5 tube amp? Attenuator for current amps? Amps with power scaling/attenuator built in? Modelers? Or more pedals (been eyeing the KoT for a while lol)? Cheers!

    The KoT is a great, great pedal. But just like the Klon, they're easy enough to replicate these days. No reason to buy boutique unless you are trying to impress other guitar players, which a lot of guitarists seem to want to do. It's like they forget the audience is all that matters, and they're not gonna give a ratsass that you have them. I personally think the MG is even better with single coils or at least just as great as the KoT. And the Pantheon works so well with Fender amps because of its awesome EQ. I haven't played the Foxcatcher, but it also seems to hold its own.

    I have a Foxcatcher. The functionality is pretty weird. The right foot switch can be set as either a boost or an added gain. But the added gain is only slight. So, the main drawback is that you cannot have a somewhat clean setting on the left switch and a high-gain setting on the right/boost switch.
