    Life too short for long videos? Key timings below in ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’
    In this episode we revisit the venerable Marshall Blues Breaker overdrive pedal of the early 1990s. This one was very kindly loaned to us by our good friend Chris Buck (honk). Thank you Chris!
    The pedal was designed to sound somewhat like the even more venerable Marshall 1962 model 2x12 combo, used most famously by Eric Clapton on the 1966 album ’Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton’… by John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers. Needless to say, that’s where the amp picked up its new name. Phew. That’s a lot of Blues Breakers and Bluesbreakers, but I think it’s right. Mick here.
    We start by listening to the original, then stomp through a bunch of modern pedals that take the Blues Breaker pedal, combo, or the head version JTM45 - as their principle inspiration.
    Couple of things to note. First, there’s hefty low end in this mix. Maybe it was the bigger cabs. If it’s too much for you, just notch down your graphic EQ a few dB from about 120Hz down. My mixing headphones (Beyer DT880 Pro) are very balanced... a lot of modern 'listening' headphones accentuate bass and I should remember to check that. Apols.
    Second, we were remiss in not getting a modern Marshall BB-2 Blues Breaker pedal. Maybe we can revisit that at some point soon.
    Yes, that is a real 1965 JTM45 at the end. It’s on next week’s show…
    Meantime, please enjoy the episode…

    TPS, whatever the comments say, please don't change the show. The tangents, getting side-tracked and your personalities are what makes this show the highlight of mine, and so many other people's, week. However, I think Simon should get a 5 minute segment, each episode, called: Simon Says. Where he talks about his time teching in the 80's for rockstars who played headstockless guitars and basses. One can dream...

    The trick with this pedal is to not give players too much gain increase. All the magic happens in this pedal in the low gain range as Dan said. Once you increase the gain too much the pedal and circuit sounds bland. Great show guys and many thanks for including the 62x!

    I just bought a Pantheon. I already own a Morning Glory. I dont hear any of the high end unpleasantness you talk about with the Pantheon. But then again, I do keep the presence off, which is what I think most owners do with any BB style pedal which has a presence control. And what is recommended in the manual (as a starting position).
    So I must confess that this, although it is my favourite TPS episode, i am frustrated by the way you guys keep the presence so far up on the Snouse and the Pantheon.
    Edit: However, I have to add that this is my favourite TPS show ever. I must have watched it 100 times!

    • @8sigreg
      @8sigreg 4 года назад +4

      I have a Pantheon also, and it sounds much better than the sound they’re getting. Mine sounds great with bass and treble at noon, presence very low, volume at 10-11, gain about 2, gain-level switch up, overdrive switch in the middle. Into the rhythm channel of a Mesa Lonestar or a Toneking Imperial it’s pretty glorious.
      Wampler’s demo of the pedal shows what it can do.

    • @HD-yh4fu
      @HD-yh4fu 3 года назад

      @@8sigreg I've been looking for more demos of what it can do low gain, but most of them are rippin' blues rock. And yeah, I noticed they are kinda giving it a mid-hump with the bass and treble dipped like that. It's great that the Pantheon is so versatile like that, but I don't think it's a particularly great demo of the EQ section, just makes it sound more Tubescreamery.

    When I was at University in 1966, a jazz buff called me into his room to hear the sax intro to “Have You Heard” on the “Beano” record. I was suitably impressed-and then came Eric Clapton’s solo, which changed this guitarist’s life. I switched from acoustic to electric and never looked back. Had a Guvner pedal in the 90s and loved it.

    Funnily enough when Chris mentioned his Bluesbreaker was likely to die on him at some point I had recommended the BlackBox 2 as a replacement as it's the closest thing. I've had one for years, I tried the KOT but that came and went. The BB2 remained. It's super quiet in operation, a testament to the handwired build quality. And if you boost it with something like a Lovepedal COT it sounds immense. Mine only has 3 switches, the 4 switch version only just came out. They're on special right now. Tempted to get a second, such a versatile little pedal. Thanks guys, another thoroughly enjoyable hour. Welcome back Blue and Red.

    I believe (though I could be wrong!) the Guv'nor was the original MIAB pedal and the first Marshall pedal...then that split off into the trio of the Bluesbreaker, Drivemaster (which I THINK is identical to the Guv) and the Shredmaster in the early '90s...so that trio is Low/Medium/High gain. I've got a Guv and BB...both incredible boxes!!

    Drive Master! That's the pedal Dan was trying to remember in the beginning. He was right in saying that the Guv'nor came out first (1988 to be exact) and then was followed up in the 90s with the Marshall Blues Breaker (modeled after JTM45 / Blues Breaker), Drive Master (modeled after JTM800) and the Shred Master (a high gain alternative, marketed towards the "shred" guitarists who were very popular at the time). Anyway, great episode as always!

    At 14:46 there was what looked like a miscommunication in hand gestures. The “stop - don’t change anything” combined with the “I’m excited! We’re excited! Let’s high five” that turned into a very awkward double high five was absolutely incredible. Haha I love you guys!

    Interesting with the Pantheon. Wampler recommend running with the presence off and adding a little, that way you loose the top end. I can attest it's a great pedal and is so much more than just a Blues Breaker. However the remit here was Blues Breaker and I guess some of the others did that a little better albeit with less options. Pantheon still my personal winner though.

    Nice! The Pedal Show returns to pedals and that's a good thing. Enjoy some of the other content and it's fun but pedals, pedals, PEDALS!!!
    So a few things guys. As a big fan of the show (I wait for it every week) I have a suggestion. I wish you guys would quit worrying about haters, shade throwers. Really, I don't care what people are "screaming at the screen" or "que comments" about this, that or the other. Screw it ... do your show. If you are thinking that someone might be wanting you cover a certain aspect of the topic, just cover it. It seems you guys, especially Mick, are a tiny bit over concerned about what "The Internet" are thinking, complaining, preocupied with. The heck with it. If you think it's worth talking about, then talk about it.
    Mick the mighty blue Strat sounds wonderful, as does Red. YAY!!! The Pedal Show Universe is back where it belongs.
    On another note, the Blues Breaker is is one of my favorite circuits. Big fan of this pedal. I have been through many. A couple of Honorable Mentions are the Bondi Effects Del Mar, my favorite. And for a low budget versions the Mooer Blues Crab is also a BB circuit/pedal. It's amazingly good sounding and actually $ to $ or # to # the best BB pedal around. But that's all bloody chalk and apples init then? Carry on mates. Good job, love you guys!

    The Pantheon does indeed have its Presence control default at all the way off! It gets sizzly very fast but just a touch of it can add a little nice, well, presence to a dark guitar. It didn't get a totally fair shot because of that I think, so it's probably worth exploring again. I've been digging mine!

I know that's easier said than done since you care so much but I always keep in mind that for every 100 people who enjoy something maybe 10 will be vocal about it whereas it's nearly the opposite for people who are negative. The amount of likes and support you guys get appeal to the former, never stop doing you guys and thanks for engaging and listening to the community even through the nonsense. It's appreciated

    LOVE Snouse. I have an old BlueLine they made that was a predecessor to the BlackBox. Super in-depth tonal tweaking with three (!!!) tone controls: one before gain, one at the gain stage, and one presence knob post-gain. Three different clipping diode options, three ways to run it (clean boost, overdrive, and a gutsy Fat Boost), the option to have the drive boost bright frequencies or run very smoothly, AND a switchable clean boost. My favorite drive pedal, and my favorite BB circuit, now and forever. It never sounds bad.

So many layers of customization - tone controls at each stage, diode options (LED, Ger, Si), boost options, bright/smooth switch, and a boost footswitch with its own dedicated volume knob.
