    I thought I posted this info but don't see it... We changed the value of the TREBLE trimpot in the last few years to make it easier to dial in. THe factory setting is all the way down, and that's the same no matter the value (0 ohms). But the new one goes up slower, so you can turn it more before it gets too bright, making it easier to dial in. So a newer one needs the trimpot turned more than an old one. Thanks and hope that helps!

      Thanks a lot for the clarification Mike. That’s exactly what I experienced and it does make sense. I can see keeping that treble trimpot pretty low E.g. on Fender blackface style amps. 👍
      Your work is much appreciated! 🙏 Cheers!

    The tolerance of the components, like pots, etc could be almost 10% above or below the values, and also you might not have the same clipping diodes, as they are obsolete and running out. Mike is pretty secretive (and rightly so) about them, but the replacement diodes that can be used in the circuit are very similar, the difference will be subtle. Both pedals sound fantastic, and alone in a mix would be totally fine. Even comparing two pedals one after the other built at the same time would have subtle differences due to tolerances.

    • @TybudX

      A buddy of mine built a little switching box for his pedals and four of us ran our collection of TSs through it one night. All the ways people describe the different versions online apply to all of them, even within the same build year. I ended up trading both of mine for two that I liked better. It was a productive night.

    • @nolondon

      tolerances are even bigger, 20% is standard on capacitors, 25% on potentiometers making your point even more important to consider. the simple fact is, the new components have exactly zero bearing on what we hear in the real world

      This is all hype to keep pushing KOT prices up so people think the old ones are worth paying for more -eventually pre whenever pedals will be 1500-watch -and people will buy the snake oil.

      I've got a couple of KOT and Prince Of Tone clones by a few different builders. One time when I was thinning out my pedal collection a guy mentioned having a KOT, so when he came to check out the pedals he was interested in, I convinced him to bring the KOT to compare to my clones.
      The difference was negligible. It might even be a matter of the trim pot settings we each had, since we never adjusted them.
      I was on the list for a KOT, but I honestly can't afford to but it now. I got on the list after getting my clones, but divorce has a way of wiping out your expendable income.
      Maybe some day, but not for a while.

      @@thisdyingsoul76 I own a KOT with the original diodes and a Chinese clone of it. Both are "higher" gain on both sides. I can easily adjust them to sound identical. I prefer the real thing on my board, of course, but now I have an inexpensive backup. If you are buying a new one, definitely consider getting both sides "higher gain." It gives usable gain across a wider sweep of the gain potentiometer. Some clones have a switch on the resistor that sets the op amp gain so you can try it both ways.

  • @fraenkiboii
    @fraenkiboii 2 года назад +42

    My 2 cents: The schematic of the KoT is relatively simple. There are no mythical diodes. As long as you get the same OpAmp and you bias it with the same resistor values, two pedals will be identical in sound. If you hear major differences, these will likely come from tolerances in the potentiometers. Most people assume that two 100k pots set at the same visual position will have the same value. More often than not that’s just not the case. These pots can have tolerances up to 10% meaning that in a worst case, two 100k pots both set at 12 o’clock (50% resistance), one could be 45k and the other one 55k. On top of that, the pedal doesn’t have one pot, but four (including the internal trimmer for presence). My point being: I would be surprised if you have two models of the same pedal visually set to the same settings and they sound exactly the same. Even in the same batch.

      I build a lot of pedals and I can agree 100%. You can have the same components from the same manufacturer and still hear differences at the same settings. You should always be able to match sounds within the tolerance of the potentiometer, so instead of it being at 3 o’clock like it is on the original maybe it’s at 3:45 on the next one to get identical tone. That’s just electrical components for ya.
      Tolerances mean differences in resistance which definitely affects the tonal quality of a circuit.

    I'm a big fan of the KOT pedal and I also have 2, one on my pedal board and one loose for most of my gigs where I'd rather just use 2 or 3 pedals strung together as needed for the situation. The great thing that this pedal does so well is react to your touch and variations in left hand attack and technique as you so well illustrated in your video. It's also a very "natural" sounding pedal and responds well to both single coil and humbucker pickups. I haven't found anything else yet that equals or surpasses the KOT, at least for me.

    The new gold enclosure one sounds a little brighter when dialed in to the same settings as the old one. I attribute this to the lighter colour shade of the gold paint over the darker purple painted enclosure which provides a darker tone overall,... the paint bro,... it's all in the paint.

    I guess every electrical component has a tolerance. 2%, 5%, 10%. Even identical circuits with same brand components could conceivably have compounding tolerances that need slightly different knob positions to give the same result. It's handy that there's internal knobs for even more tweaking.

    • @gffg387

    I’m a happy owner of a 2018 pedal and got right back on the waiting list again, for the same reason (and I’m still waiting for the new one). The old one is my go-to, and I practice with it almost every day. (And so far nothing has replaced it in my practice rig… it’s the whole practice rig!)
    Refreshing to hear that all’s well, and good to know about adjusting the presence knob for the new one when it arrives.
    But why the OD+distortion settings? I love the boost side as an always-on clean sound!

    • @JohnShalamskas
      @JohnShalamskas 22 дня назад

      The KOT ships with the red side OD, and the yellow side Clean Boost. You can set each side individually to Clean boost, OD, or Distortion with dip switches on the circuit board. They switch between no clipping diodes, clipping diodes with 0.6V forward drop, and clipping diodes with a lower voltage drop than 0.6V. Clipping at a lower voltage sounds more compressed and agressive. For a while I was using both sides clean boost, which is great for clean and light OD. Also good for slamming the input of a tube amp.

I had one that I sold for the price I bought it. It is undoubtedly a good pedal, but not better than other double OD’s like the zeta, the honeybee, gladio, or my preferred one: the CmatMods SuperSigna I still consider it is the best double OD ever. My advice: buy what you hear not what you see or read about. Cheers

  • @BlakeC27
    @BlakeC27 Год назад

    The pedals may have the says specs but you need to take into account the tolerances of the components used. For pots and capacitors, this can be up 20%. So, for example, at 100k pot could range between 80k and 120k in some extreme examples. Resistors are usually 1% to 5% depending on the type. Hence why in this video, tweaking the internal pots were able to get the two pedals to sound to same.
    I highly doubt that Analogman is pulling old parts out of other electronics. Rather, just looking online.

There can be up to a 10% drift in variance in each potentiometer, so with that many potentiometers in play on each side, that's quite a bit of variance that can be had. The internal trimmer is just reducing the effect of the .01uf treble-cutting cap to ground of the original Marshall circuit, different tapers can give very different results when putting pots in the same positions.

I just want to be able to play it within my life and im not willing to pay 700-1,200 bucks for one. Definitely going to check out the Duke of Tone in October when it releases too. Im curious if i put the Duke of Tone after my Toxic Twins and stack the Blues Breaker side into the Duke if it will sound very close to an actual KoT since they are both very good Blues Breaker circuits that have the options of clean boost, hard clipping and soft clipping just like both sides of the KoT.

    No two pedals off a production line sound the exact same. All components (pots, resistors, caps) have a tolerance. High quality parts are usually around 5%. That means something like a volume pot that is suppose to be 150k can be + or - 5%. That works out to 7.5 ohm. So your 150k pot could be 142.5k - 157.5k. That is a bit of difference on total output and knob sweep. Now replicate this for every pot, resistor and capacitor in a circuit and you will quickly see why no two pedals sound EXACTLY the same.
    This is with modern tolerances. Back in the day the tolerances were way wider. Sometimes up to 20%! That’s why you hear stories of players playing 20 fuzz faces in the 60’s to find the right one. Just imagine 20% more or less bass, fuzz, output, etc.

    • @KrisBarocsi
      @KrisBarocsi  2 года назад +1

      Absolutely. That’s why it was so easy to match the tone of these two. +-5% or less is not an issue.

  • @brianwalton2602

    If you have the high gain option on both pedals you don't really have one of the "old ones" you have one of the somewhat newer v4s. That said even with the high gain option there are component changes depending on when you got the v4. When I got my 2nd KoT maybe 9 years ago, I sent an email to Mike telling him they sounded different and what changed. He confirmed a component change (new component was actually more expensive - but the stock pile of the old compoenent ran out). That said, both were very close to each other and sounded fine. I cracked the pedals open and sure enough, yes the compoenets are different. Your 2018 is awfuly "new" and I'd be surprised if the components changed drastically in that timeframe, but I can tell you with 100% certainty that all KoTs over the entire history of v4 do have some subtle part differences in fact, I know of 3 changes to a cap component over the history which is easy to spot with the color differences. That said, even 2 KoTs off the same line with the same components will sound slightly different at the same settings due to part tolerences - nothing to get worked up about though. I've owned 3 KoTs and played a few more. Still have 1 as a staple on my board for many years. I'll get another one just as a backup in case of failure (which has happened as switches can and do fail on boutique pedals - which is an area that could easily be improved upon with better quality).

    • @KrisBarocsi
      @KrisBarocsi  2 года назад

      Thanks for the infos Brian! Yeah, a drive pedal has many components that are not super relevant to its tone. That being said, there are a few that are way more important than many assume. To me it looks like Mike sticked to all the parts that make this pedal have a certain tonal character, dynamic range etc. If he has to change a few of “the other parts” over the years, I don’t mind that. There are 4 years between these two and the only difference is the taper of the internal treble pot. After my slight adjustment the pedals sound and feel identical. That’s good enough for me. Haha! Cheers

    dude, you realize there is like up to a 20% difference in each pot, as to their individual resistance values, so just pointing everything at noon isn't going to give you the same value from any analog pedal to another. It would be a better comparison if you just get the knobs close and try to match settings, you might find that they are the same, just difference in knob placement due to the pot values being different.

    1. They actually sound different. Even if you adjust the trimpods, the new unit has more treble, yes, but the other muffled frequencies remain. Of course there are component tolerances, I realise that, but that's why you should always try equipment in a shop and not buy online ... at least if you care enough about the sound to spend more than 100 bucks on a pedal (which is, of course, completely unnecessary. We all know that).
    2. Only because the parts look the same does not mean that they are actually the same. There are things like varying values, different production batches, etc.
    3. Your tactic is EXACTLY what is causing used prices to skyrocket. This "trick" you are referring to is not new, but has been used by everyone since waitlist pedals have been a thing. Everyone who resells their pedal compensates AT LEAST for the loss in shipping and possibly customs costs they had to pay to get it. That way this kind of pedals always become a little more expensive with each trade. ...(and I'm not even talking about the aholes who just buy them for pure profit and immediately sell them after their bulk purchase).
    4. There are ridiculously cheap clones of this (and almost all other) pedals that sound pretty much identical, at least to the new pedal (again #parttolerances). Literally NOBODY but you (on a good day in a one-to-one comparison situation) is going to hear the difference between an original and a clone anyway, so buying originals (new or used) is exactly the kind of pedal snobbery you probably think you're not guilty of....
    And don't get me started on the pedal cloning moral debate. There is NO reasonable argument against buying clones that would hold water in a honest conversation based on logic and facts, not marketing propaganda BS that tries to make you believe that cloning an audio circuit is somehow OK while cloning the exterior for some dubious reason is a big no-no. #jhs 😅🤯
    5. Sorry, you wanted my thoughts. Here they are. I can not lie. ...At least this will help to (clean)boost your video.

I can accept that the level in the room may be appreciably different, and would concede that the two pedals did seem to have different volume output.
