- Many people have asked how our Honda Pioneer has held up on the homestead. It has been over a year since we traded our Polaris Ranger in on a Honda Pioneer. In this video, I discuss how it has performed and some of the benefits of this model. I also discuss some of the issues I have with the Pioneer.

i have 22,000 miles on my honda pioneer. I tell the polaris guys i have more miles in reverse than they do have going forward!
Wow that's crazy miles I just have a bad feeling when your 40 miles from the camp and your drive is a belt

@@jasonamy9406 from experience, I trust Yamaha and Suzuki belt systems. Never had a single a problem in thousands of miles.
We weren't able to afford the thousand but you definitely talked us into at least buying the Honda pioneer 700-4 nothing beats that Honda reliability and just genuine quality

My 2016 Polaris fell apart, when I noticed the service guy at the Polaris dealer wearing a Rolex, I decided it was time to sell the Polaris.
I went from Polaris sxs and atvs to Can Am and love them. Both your videos were great thank you. 😊

I have nearly the same list of pros and cons with my Pioneer. I'm going to lose the doors next summer and add a second battery. a bit of a lift and some new treads will follow next year. I love this machine!
I have a '16 Honda 1000-5. Love it. There are accessories out there, you just have to hunt the different vendors. As for the doors, adjust the rubber bumpers out "most" of the way(you can't get too close to the end of the thread on them or they'll vibrate out. When you close your door give it a good tug on the top over the latch until it clicks. Works for me. I also disconnected the door net at the bottom, rolled them up and secured them. If you use them, it's a moot point.

Thanks for the update, my current Honda 4 wheeler is my 9th Honda in my life + 1 push mower, I am thinking of getting the new 4 seater Honda Talon within the year. Key word is bulletproof, I own Polaris Snowmobiles and have had great luck for the last 25 years with them but you never hear Polaris described as bulletproof.

Great video. You gave some good well-thought-out pros and cons. To be honest I think the cons aren't that bad. I think Honda is probably as reliable As It Gets. I'm a big fan of Honda. I live here in Kentucky where everybody has multiple four-wheelers and UTV's and such. There are a lot of polaris's running around. Is die hard as some people are I've never heard somebody say Polaris is reliable. They just buy them because it's a popular name. I think if not for the RZR, setting a trend, Polaris would not be a very profitable company. Just my opinion based upon a long time involved with off-road stuff. Thanks again for the video.

I bought a used pioneer 700-2 and the first trip I took with it was a 700 mile trek around the Frank Church Wilderness in central Idaho aka the Magruder corridor. The only problems we experienced was a failure of the Bronco shocks that I installed ( both Bronco rear shocks failed in the last 20 miles of the trip) and I had a plastic windshield that got very scratched up from all the dust. Mechanically the Honda performed flawlessly I recommend it to anyone who asks me about it. Put new FOX shocks all 4 corners and it rides like a dream.
I have a buddy that has the same machine he’s approaching 80,000 miles without any major problems. It’s his farm vehicle and weekend boonie basher

Just purchased a 2017 Pioneer 1000 LE. We have a Polaris Razor 4 1000. So far that machine has been great. We decided on an additional SXS for other reasons. Kids are getting older & like to ride their own machine so we opted for a machine that we could take our Great Dane with us on. So far the Honda is been AMAZING!!! Put 100 miles on it the first weekend @ I can't wait to put more miles on.
I have a 2015 p5. No issues, great machine takes me where I need to go. Had a 03 350 rancher never had any problems with it either. I know some guys that are still riding fourtrax 300's that are over 20 years old.
Don't think Honda made a 1000-5 for the 2015 model year

@@lilywater3408 I did get end up purchasing it. I use it all season. Trail riding, elk hunt, hauling wood, and snow plowing. No regrets. Put a winch on it.

The rubber door stops are adjustable in-and-out to close the gap minimizes rattle
I have the pioneer 700 4 seater I love it. Honda is the best there is. I agree with the herky jerky especially when trying to hitch to something. I wish I had gone with the 1000 but it had just came out and there were not many available. The 1000 would have given me the high/low range and 6 speed instead of 3 speed but I’ve honestly never had an issue on the farm with it and we work her pretty hard. Nice review. Maybe I should do one on ours.

Honda's are bulletproof.
I have a 2007 Suzuki Eiger 4x4 quadrunner. I love it! But I would like a utv. I am a Honda fan also. They are tried and true.

I have 3" of lift, 30" tires and almost 2000 miles on my 2016 P1k-5. Reverse is a little high geared, the heat under front seat is pretty bad here in the Mississippi summers, but other than than my machine has been awesome. I hunt, play and mainly work with my pioneer. The only other machine I'd even look at is the can am defender.

@Polaris sportsman yet here in pa in the oil fields atleast in my part of the patch everyone is running Honda's. If your going to use it to work honda is the way to go. If you want a nice plush ride polaris is great. When you show me as many polaris's with 50k miles as ive seen hondas without anything done besides general maintenance (ie: oil bearings bushings tierods and breaks) then ill be impressed.

Great review. I have a Pioneer 1000-5 and we love it. It’s a wonderful machine in the areas that count...power, torque, hold back breaking, power steering, reliability, towing and hauling, etc. Throttle max solves the jumpy throttle. 👍
What is Throttle max?
@@danielspencer5023 it’s a simple steel plate that attaches to the gas pedal. It changes the angle of your foot and reduces strain during long rides. Also smoothes out the throttle jump when starting out. Search online…lots of reviews.
Good to see how brands like Honda stay true to quality and not cheating out like other brands. Also honda just focuses on reliability not a list of cheap gimmicky excessories. As long as it ran and served its purpose I wouldn't cry about anything.

I just purchased a Honda Pioneer. I went with Honda for 2 main reasons. One Honda's have an excellent reputation for "Reliability," and second a year earlier I purchased a Honda Rancher ATV and the ATV has been rock steady. We (wife, kids &me) purchased 207 acres and build our dream home on it. We spent a year on just the planning phase, where the house would go. How much of the land the house sits on is flat (graded). And which parts trails and other graded areas we were going to do.
Initially I used the tractor as a means of getting around or the riding mower. These tools just didnt cut. So we got 2 ATV's and then realized a UTV would be best for things like tree trimming with a pole saw, maintaining the trails. There's always something to do when you live on a lot of land. Mind you my wife nor I are not ranchers/farmers. We just wanted to reside on a lot of land to hand down to the family for generations to come. My wife is a Veterinarian and she moved her practice from suburbia to rural area. Which is actually been better for her practice due to house calls for farm/ranch animals. I still work in Nashville and have to commute about 80 miles to the hospital....I'm a surgeon at Vanderbilt U, Medical Center. I wish we moved here sooner. We love living out here. Working on the property and maintain things my stress relief therapy. We do have some animals on the property, e.g., a few cows, a bunch of Kiko and Pygmy goats, 2 Turkey's and so forth. The all roam freely. The property is fenced where needed and of course the trees/woods provide a natural barrier. Even Abby the Doberman runs around playing with the goats. But she mostly stays in the backyard close to the house. Abby is an inside/outside doggy. When you reside on a lot of land, people don't realize the equipment/tools you need. My Kubota tractor is the price of a new car. So if you want to live on a few acres or more. COnsider the expense in acquiring these items.
Yeah farm equipment is expensive. I think this one reason why a lot of land is going back to bush. Land owners don’t have the tools needed to look after it.

I have the pioneer 700 deluxe and there is no problem at all with the throttle being herky jerky.
I think the dealer didn't set it up right.
I currently have 7100 plus miles and never had to do anything but change the oil and filters.

When I bought my yamaha raptor In February of 2007 by may I had well over 1,000 miles on it by the time the time the snow melted here in northern Minnesota. It's 2020 and yes I've freshen up the motor, stroker crank, high compression piston plus efi controller, ect....ive pulled a polarIs ranger down the gravel road faster than my other buddy could go on his polarIs atv 700 twin. I have wore out 3 sets of rear tires so far. Really love the 22" rear tsl super swampers. Great in the winter for running fast on the river passing up snowmobiles. At 75mph in 4th gear I can pull it up shift into 5th and it's stupid fast. Stock gearing? Absolutely not. LOL. If I buy a UTV it will be a Honda pioneer, and I'm sure I will turn into a true off road big bog machine. Warranty on honda? Never.....
I have the same ATV. I also had a Polaris before. Another con would be the engine heat. However it is an excellent vehicule and, by far, much better than the Polaris, and/ or the Kawasaki.
I’ve had my Pioneer for 4 years after owning a Polaris Ranger and haven’t looked back. I had to upgrade to the Honda after the Polaris caught fire and burned my garage down. The power block for the winch shorted out and caused the fire as determined by the fire inspector and lab analysis.

I don’t have a side by side ( yet) but I did compare the Honda and Polaris 4 wheelers, when looking to buy. I’m an older guy looking for utility and not something to just go out and hotdog on, and I settled on the Honda Rancher 420. In just a walk around and doing the touchy feely it was obvious that the Honda was much more substantial, and costed quite a bit more which got me to looking hard at the Polaris, but in the end it was Honda’s bullet proof shaft drive transmission and I even opted for power steering which is great, it turns 4 yrs old this month and all I’ve had to do are oil changes which I do myself, I do use the Honda oil as not to void any warrantee ,Good luck with those piggys!
You should wire a trickle charger with automatic shut off and float feature to your battery and charge it on occassions. Your battery will last a lot longer

Great video! I have a 700 Pioneer that I use for chores/projects on my land in northern MN. Like you I had a Honda Forman for 13 years before deciding that a SXS was needed. I have never regretted buying a Honda it's completely reliable.
We have a 2013 Big Red MUV with over 5,000 miles on it. Zero issues so far, same battery even. Now our 2020 Polaris 850 ATV has like 6,500 miles and has had several issues each year. Even that being said I'd still get another Polaris ATV, you just can't beat the ride and fun factor of this machine.
i got rid of my ranger for a pioneer. that ranger cost me money everytime i cranked it up.. i sold my ranger at 3 years old. i have had my pioneer for 4 years and have spent zero money on it. way more power more torque and more top end. only downfall is its heavier
I have the suicide doors on our Ranger. They are easier to get in and out. On another note, I just gave away a1985 Honda Big Red 250ES with reverse. Never had to get into the engine or gearbox. Uses the hell out of it hauling materials to a remote cabin site. Did all the brakes, cables and wheels bearings before I got rid of it.It’s out at a homestead about 15 miles from the nearest road doing fine.

I have 2017 700 4 love it very good work horse. Not good for trails because of width 60inches most places 50inches limits, so I bought a 16 Polaris 900, like it for that been lucky not major issues, if I had to get rid of one it would be the Polaris, need my workhorse more.

Had the same problems with my polaris. Took our in to get it serviced at 2800 miles. It cost $4000.00 to get it back. There wasnot much left of it. I had it serviced every 500 miles before that. Bought the extended warranty also on the honda. Hope I wasted my money. After all the problems with the Polaris I was gun shy also. Love the pioneer especially in steep country. Don't like free wheeling down a mountain side with no compression.
Yep,toyota tacoma,Kubota tractor,honda UTV.Its called fit and finish and engineering.I work too hard for my dollar,not into gambling.

First thing I did with my UTV was to yank the doors ...I guess if I drove through the brush I might reconsider ....btw storing doors? Just strap up in garage rafters or hang on wall etc
My dad bought a Honda rancher electric hand shift in 2000 and it had enough miles on it to go from Mississippi to California and back before it got sold
Try a Throttlemax pedal...makes a huge difference in control and smooth operation...

all u hav to do for a small smooth movement is hold the brakes jus a little while applying throttle pedal.

This pioneer is my pick driving to the Newfoundland. Not too big, reliable, 1000cc has power.
I have a polaris ranger 2018 with 8,456 miles on it and never had any problems.

My 2013 Honda Big Red 700.. I put a car battery in it! so much better. always seem they sometimes crank slow. even with new starters. but Car batter really did the job.
Reliability.... It's a Honda. What did you expect? Honda isn't the fastest. It isn't the flashiest, they just plain Work.
Still riding mi 1981 gl 500 interstate only 58000 went 700 round trip to New york up state last summer gowing to TN this year stihl pulling fire wood withe a 86 trx 250 and log arch
U mentioned about draining other battery but you can put a switch for a sylanoid to put both batteries in use,or switch off and only run on one battery,when you need 2 flip switch
It’s a Honda, a great vehicle manufacturer.
We have a Polaris ranger and every 200 to 300 miles you have to rebuild the front end a frame bushings and sometime ball joints. I looked on u tube and this is a on going problem other than that it seems okay. Like your Honda. Good video.😁😁😁😁😁

The doors have a 2 step latch system. You don't need to slam it, just hear it click 2 times.
Yeah and listen to them chattering the entire ride, father in law has the big red turd and a pioneer 1000. My ranger crew runs circles around both.
@@T.Hizzle listen here if you don't like a brand or are a fan boy of one you don't need to trash others at the end of the day they are work machines they are supposed to be built like one and are supposed to be abused in every way if you can't afford a pricey model and decide to buy a lower end stuff you shouldn't be ashamed because of that because with this economy the majority of people are midium to low class people that have jobs on the minimum wage and others are obligated to do a lease because of not being able to earn enough money to buy the high end stuf and they need the sxs to do tasks that an atv can't and end up obligated to buy one of these low end sxs i now some time (majority) people exaggerate the facts but no one should ashame other person because of a low end sxs at the end of the day they are meant for work

You can't go wrong with honda. Just sold a 2003 rancher. Bought a Kawasaki mule. It fit our needs better than the honda. Never looked at polaris because of the horror stories about quality.

@@reck0n3r we have a wedding venue. Haul people from parking to the barn. Fold back seat down and haul firewood to outdoor stove. Mostly work vehicle. Its not fast but does have power to pull and haul.
We have one too and have had similar experiences. Talking about Honda I still have my 87 prelude 2.0 SI and it’s more fun driving that Tesla model S or any other car I have had.

I have a Honda four trac that we’ve had for almost 20 years, my kids couldn’t tear it up, when I was ready to purchase a side by side I really wanted a Honda however they didn’t have what I was wanting, I settled for a Polaris ranger in the 900xp, I must say I have been very pleased with it after 6 years of some pretty tough usage. I had a few issues but nothing serious. Your experience with the Polaris seems excessive compared to most, I agree that Honda makes a good machine and someday I hope they have available what suits my needs.

No, I would say YOUR experience with the Polaris is rare compared to most.
I totally agree. Most of the people I talk to with polaris love them. Some have problems, but a lot of those are driver abuse, or not taking care of them.
We switched to Polaris after our Honda blew its motor with only 20 miles on it, no rough riding, just cruising at 3000 rpm when it bogged down and blew it motor, our Polaris now has 30,000 miles and can handle full throttle no problem, but I understand your reasons for changing

My experience with Hondas has been great. The thing about Hondas good or bad it will be doing the same thing years down the road. My 2020 700 rides pretty harsh.
My 2019 Polaris Ranger XP1000 stays in the shop. Broken axles, belts,recalls, rear differential exploded last week. I dont even trail ride on it. Honda Pioneer 1000-3 will be my next SXS. #polarisjunk
As someone who still drives a 99 Honda fourtrax, Hondas quality is superior to Polaris I’ve had 3 sportsman’s and every single one had major issues.
Can never go wrong with a Honda - their cars, the Ridgeline pick-up, motorcycles, lawn mowers, etc are are great running machines. Like your bike I am sure your S x S will give you years of worry free service on the farm.

Ridgeline is ugly and expensive.
@@holysmokes9813 Respectfully disagree on the Ridgeline. I have had two since 2007 and love them. It may not be a truck for you but they have done everything I want them to do and VERY dependable.
@@jimh.412 Old Ridgeline was "Ugly" but I loved it. Newer one looks more pickup like. Expensive is relative - I would look at total cost of ownership and would argue they are actually pretty cheap in the long run.

Bought my ranger used back in 05with 26hrs. Now 900hr plus and lots of fun and WORK it’s awesome! My 01 Yamaha Grizzly 660 does all my plowing and WORK. All great companies all great machines.... Until they break. KSP

Buy a Throttle Maxx for your gas pedal. Game changer for throttle consistency and smoother ride. Doors are double latch for safety.....when u get in just pull door and it will click again-no rattle
I hunt in eastern Oregon and one of the ranchers I talked to was on a Honda foreman. It was 2 years old and he already had 20k miles on it. I also had a conversation with a Honda dealer who stated that they regularly get these atvs in for rebuild with 30k and more miles. The owner will get it back for a fraction of what a new one cost and put another 20 to 30k miles on it. You can't do that with a polaris or canam.
I watched your first video which got me looking at the Honda Pioneer, but for what I need the Yamaha Wolverine fit my needs better. Other than the in cab heat issue, I haven't heard many complaints about Honda.
Great video! We’re you able to get the Super ATV plow hooked up on your Honda? I’m in the market for a SxS and one of the main things it will need to do is plow snow. Also love to see you review your plow and winch in a video sometime.
