@@thomasmainecoon Same. I bought so many albums from that comp and then read the liner notes on those where they thank a bunch of other bands, so I'd check those out as well. One of the only ways to find that sort of music when you live in midwest suburbs.
@leftofpunk always read the liner notes and follow the path backwards! It's not on this POR, and I don't believe super popular, but the Screeching Weasel album 'Wiggle' was always a favorite. Crazy how some albums are like light switches, they just open your eyes to so much.
In 97 when I started learning bass, I borrowed my friends Roots Radical CD to take into my bass teacher to get him to show me how to play this song. I loved it so much at 17. I love it still at 43 ✌
The elegance of mixing punk and ska, doesn’t sound outdated for being 30 years since! This song made Rancid more than just a punk band. They have more flair… At least to me.
Do memories just come flooding back to you when you play earlier stuff? When you start smiling and looking up, it looks like you remembered something epic from back in the day
I’m glad you started your channel Matt. I’m thinking of going and getting myself a fender precision just for the fun of recording my own band as well as learning rancid, Pennywise, Green Day, and op ivy. I’ll see ya in September with Green Day!
Extremely underrated song! One of my all time favorites. Miss that offbeat on the newer records. Thanx for this and for everything, Matt. Nothing but love for you × the rest of the gang. (Hope to) see ya in the pit (again soon) ☠️🖤
One of my all time favorite ska songs right there. It should be noted there is a fantastic version of this song with Stubborn All-Stars that appeared in Beavis and Butt-Head Do America. I don't know if it was re-recorded for that film, but yeah. Both versions are fantastic. Same with the two versions of Cash, Culture & Violence. Keep it up Matt.
Matt! You were such a huge influence on my bass playing you and Andy flag showed me you can play punk and also be technical and have fun and now as im getting older I can also hear James Jamerson in your playing with the chromatic walks you do so amazingly thank you for all the years of music you have given and continue to give us all
Always loved this song! Just decided to learn this one recently after the B/C sides album. such a fun song. Def helpful too to see how the master does it too!! Matt if you read this - you should do the Brothels soon! The bridge on that one gets me
Does anybody know where to get old songs of Downfall and Silencers ( except Policeman)
Oh man this is crazy. I cannot wait to get done driving across the state of Michigan so I can actually watch this video. This has been one of my go to warm ups for so many years thanks Matt I mean Mr. Freeman!!!!
Awesome! I was a junior in high school in 94 and Rancid and social D were my favorite bands and I had that punk o Rama cd and I want to riot was played over and over and over again, Thanks Matt
Man, I can't count the hours I spent as a teenager trying to figure out your basslines sitting in my bedroom. I pretty much learned bass from trying to figure out rancid and op ivy. Love these vids, keep em coming!
So cool that you played this one! My friends dad randomly bought Punk O Rama when I was in middle school and it exposed me to punk for the first time. This song will always be special to me.
Thank you so much for these! I’ve been watching your videos since the pandemic and I think it would be really cool. If you if you talked about those guitars hanging on your walls behind you and where you got them and what they’re all about.
Yes! love the hidden fact that the song pays homage to Cock Sparrer Runnin' Riot. Especially the "deh neh neh deh neh deh deh" part and the "Riot-iot-iot" at the end. Feel like nobody has ever picked that up before surprisingly.
i played in a band doing punk covers and we did a few rancid and Lars tunes, was all new to me as im a bit of a rocker but i must say your basslines are immense, managed to support uk subs was a good laugh! respect Matt keep up the good work!and greetings from Blighty
Still got my "Roots Radical Single, in the paper sleeve Oi ! Seems like I bought Let's Go in '94 and the Roots Radical Cd was a bonus if I remember correctly, might be wrong?
Two greatest moments in Beavis and Butthead Do America: The Hoover Dam scene ("Is this a God Dam?") and this tune. (This tune eclipsed the Hoover Dam scene, and a friend and I had to pause the movie 'cause we were laughing so hard by how stupid that moment was.) I had ...And Out Come the Wolves, but this tune finally kicked me in the ass and got me to pick up the first to albums. As always, thanks for sharing 😀
Hey Matt! April 11th , 1996 was a fantastic time that I heard y’all play this song! You guys were on tour for Out Come the Wolves. Initially you were gonna play a small club in Omaha, NE called the Ranch Bowl. It was then moved to Omaha Civic Auditorium that had a bunch of orchestra seating in the pit. The show was wild! These 3 security guards started really beating the shit out some punk rockers and Tim sees it go down. Tim yell’s “ Hey!! Stop it!! And stops playing , throws down his guitar 🎸and jumps off stage and starts fighting these motherfuckers. I think at that point you , Lars and Brett jump in and beat the shit out of the security guards! After that y’all got back on stage and the very next song was “ I wanna RIOT “. The place erupted and my goodness there was an energy I’lol never forget. Orchestra seats that were bolted down got ripped apart and thrown everywhere! The place was crazy! Fun show! Last I heard the city was shaking their hands and supposedly banned Rancid from playing there. Anyways Matt, maybe you remember it maybe not but it was a great time for a kid that was 15 ! Thanx!
Maybe you could answer a question. When I had a three piece punk band, I played guitar and would tell my bass player what to play. you create such intricate bass lines. Do you guys write music together?Or do you just hear the guitars and play what you feel? Cheers
How about some stories to switch things up? I know you got stories that have never seen the light of day. Like what was the Bay Area scene like when you were up and coming? What was the first Rancid tour like? What’s your favorite songs to play live and why. Things like that.
Matt can you do Adina? Also would love a video on your gear (amp/cabinet/strings you use). You and subhumans (UK) were my biggest influences teaching myself bass by ear back before people had the internet in their homes. I saw you guys when you toured with Avail and Pink Lincolns in 94, when I was 16, you and Tim were both so nice hanging out and bullshitting to people after the show.
Great bass playing as always, but I wanted to say I've always loved that lyric: Cause I'm the kid whose got a lot of problems, if I throw a brick maybe the brick will go and solve them.
First Rancid song I ever heard. That first Punk-O-Rama CD did a lot of heavy lifting in 1994.
And many of the following releases epitaph put out were simply perfect. Soundtrack to my teens.
For me, it's the best POR album. Front to back amazing and what really got me into Punk.

Whoever came up with the term punk-o-rama made Epitaph a lot of money in the 90s
This is my favorite rancid song
Mine too.
Seeing Matt Freeman make mistakes like we all do and smile like we all do is priceless
In 97 when I started learning bass, I borrowed my friends Roots Radical CD to take into my bass teacher to get him to show me how to play this song. I loved it so much at 17. I love it still at 43 ✌
I started playing guitar as a teenager listening to Greenday, but it was Rancid that made me switch to bass 🤘
Best B side from Rancid
Greatest bass player of all time, hands down!!
100% GOAT
Yea,i agree..you can hear and see his fingers are walking on bass guitar,..he's great..
The elegance of mixing punk and ska, doesn’t sound outdated for being 30 years since! This song made Rancid more than just a punk band. They have more flair… At least to me.
Ufff, One of my favorite Rancid Songs

Almost every song on the B/C side LP is a masterpiece!!! 😍😍

I've always loved this song and surprised it was a B side! It's a great Rancid song. Thanks for the playthrough!
Oh man this is crazy. I cannot wait to get done driving across the state of Michigan so I can actually watch this video. This has been one of my go to warm ups for so many years thanks Matt I mean Mr. Freeman!!!!

Thanks for creating these with a smile too. Getting bass lessons from you has helped me be a better musician.
I bloody love this song!
Cool to see all the little nuances. I was playing it way differently based on a tab I found online, but now I can iron out the kinks.
Awesome! I was a junior in high school in 94 and Rancid and social D were my favorite bands and I had that punk o Rama cd and I want to riot was played over and over and over again, Thanks Matt

This is cool, think I might learn this one. Also, I second doing a video on the other instruments in the room.
I never knew music could sound so good until the first time I heard this song.
Awesome!!! Matt thanks so much for this is one of my faves. To just chill and jam. You’re the man Matt!!!

Can you make a video on some tips for playing bass?
Great song. What's Brett Reed up to now days? I miss him being in Rancid.
Matt, are you interested in playing any Devil's Brigade songs? Love to see you playing the upright.
Was this the first Ska track by Rancid? Loved that Punk-o-Rama tape.
Checking Songsterr Tabs to make sure you played this right 🤡 I somehow didn't know this song. Thanks for sharing, now I'm working on playing it!!
Mr. Freeman. Huge fan. I gotta ask what is that gorgeous blue double neck guitar on the wall behind you. Looks kinda. Like a Kay my Da has.
Another great one!
Do you remember all these bass lines or do you have to refresh before recording the video?
Love it! Slightly out of tune and still sounds great! You're legendary!
The rare Matt Freeman "rest" lol
Please do Roots Radical

How do you remember all of your bass lines?

Forgot to mention the Beavis and Butthead do america soundtrack...lol
That’s right. It’s was on that.
Matt play Tattoo
Is this super quiet for anyone else?
I heard the Bevis and Butthead Do America version first.
it was also on the Beavis and Butthead soundtrack
Great bass playing as always, but I wanted to say I've always loved that lyric: Cause I'm the kid whose got a lot of problems, if I throw a brick maybe the brick will go and solve them.
