This is exactly what you should show. The parts of the song, some background on how the track for the record came together and then how it’s played. This is amazing.
I hope people appreciate how special it is for Matt Freeman to be making this kind of content. How many legendary musicians are doing this kind of thing, much less with this kind of authenticity? Musicians and fans alike are going to benefit and enjoy these play along/breakdowns for years to come. Thanks Matt!
I'm almost 40 and man, almost everyday I strugle to learn a little more on bass. I must admit that mr. Freeman is defenetly what motivated to start playin' again. Thanks sir! Btw, great teacher.
This was the first Rancid album I bought. Love the album and the song. Your channel made me pick up my bass, get it setup, and start playing after a 12 year break. I’m forever grateful. Thank you so much. I’ve been practicing St. Mary as I I knock off the rust. I would love to see it on the channel.
Would never have guessed the hammer on on the dead note. It really makes a difference on the feel of the song. This is one of my favorite Rancid bass lines ever. You are the reason that I (try to) play bass Matt, thank you so much!
This was awesome. Life Won't Wait is my favorite Rancid album and Black Lung one of my favorite tracks. I love the ripping bassline and it's great to see you run through it up close! Thanks
The explanation of the riff's composition in this video was really interesting. This channel has made me appreciate Rancid songs I haven't heard in a while and may have forgot. I think the Life Won't Wait album is Rancid's compositional and arrangement masterpiece. That's interesting to hear it was recorded so quickly.
Dude, thank you Matt. Congrats on your journey of becoming a streamer. Your video and audio quality have continued to get better, your breakdowns of the song before playing the song, your little intro video, it’s all amazing, you just continue to improve. No surprise from the greatest bass player who’s ever lived. I’m 37, been listening to Rancid since I was 15, before cell phones or RUclips. I seriously can’t believe I get to live in a time where I get to watch shit like this. Thank you so much.
Really enjoying the exposition and insight behind the riffs. Hope to see more "behind-the-song" format moving forward. Always excited for the next one. Thanks, Matt!
This is the song I’ve been waiting for ever since you started doing these bass bunker videos. Thank you! That was great! Makes me feel better about struggling with that bassline myself 😂 I knew it was a tricky one!
Hell yeah Matt!!!!I remember getting this cd right when it came out in San Luis and was jamming it up all the time. And always had to learn these great riffs to play. And like 25 or so years later, even with a brain injury now still jamming it all up.When that lonely whistle calls out your name 🎉🎼💀👌
This is such a great breakdown, love the detail (and the song!!) Hearing a fantastic musician explain the thinking behind a part is endlessly fascinating!
Huge fan of this song. Huge fan of the guy who wrote the bass lines. I also like the term hammer-on dead note to describe what you do mid chorus. I incorporate several of those into my own lines.
Thanks for sharing your experience! Black Lung is one of my favourite songs of this album together Who Would’ve Thought. I’m looking forward to hearing the latter too! I love the updated format. As soon as I watched the videos, I always run to grab my bass and play!
Black Lung brings out some memories bro. Myself & a good friend figured out that bassline on our guitars in 1998…. We didn’t own a bass so we made due. When we tried to play it on a friends bass later, we realized how crazy of a bass line it was because of how wide bass frets are 😂😂😂. Much love from SW Louisiana dude.
THIS!!! This is how you should do every video!!! Breakdown each bass part, tell us a little bit about each part and then do a play through. Seriously, this video taught me what I’ve been doing right and what I’ve been doing wrong when I play this song, so it was REALLY helpful.
I love this, I naturally tend to try and emphasize the kick or vocal melody on the bass. Such a cool line. Of all the rancid songs this is the most like how I play with the movements. Appreciate the breakdown.
Rainbow! Man I'm a huge dio fan very cool rainbow shirt I was fortunate enough to attend Dios memorial service you have great taste in music my friend love the videos
That's the fisrt song i figured out how to play back then when there were no bass tabs ) And i think it's the favourite one. Thank you, Mr. Freeman for your masterpiece!
I really appreciate you taking the time and relearning your own basslines for us. And the explanations help a lot to understand what's going on in your head while writing music. And good thing you look after your back and switched to the chair. ;)
I like that you've learned from Mark over at Low End University to give us more insight into your actual playing, this is fantastic and I think I'm talking for everyone when I say we appreciate you Matt.
One of my favourites and I love seeing the jazz out again. Really liking the format of going through the lines before you play them - you have such a creative approach and its great to see it in slow motion. I'm going to have to revise how I play this song though! 😊
I've listened to this song so many times over the years. And of course I've heard the bassline, but now I truly appreciate how brilliant and effort going into it. That is why it's so great seeing them in action here in the basement. I love the added little info bits about creating the lines, stuff like that is so interesting to me. Life Won't Wait is such a great record and it's fascinating you worked quick on it, relatively speaking I'm sure.
Would love to see the crowd , operation ivy , all time favourite song I’ve watched so many people cover this on bass on you tube and everyone plays it different … would like to see og play it Great video again as well
Really digging the format of going over some of the parts before playing the song. Super interesting. Also shout out to the chair for posture improvement!
My buddy at fender custom shop, Brian says you’re and amazingly nice dude. Lotsa love from Bakersfield. Long time fan of yours. Thanks for being a good human on top of an amazing musician I learned to play bass while listening to you as a young man
The perfect encapsulation of the whole Bass Bunker vibe is when Matt Freeman tells you that even he had a hard time learning Matt Freeman's bass line!
Yeah.....now he understands how is like for the rest of us
😂😂😂
This is exactly what you should show. The parts of the song, some background on how the track for the record came together and then how it’s played. This is amazing.
Yeah he knows what he’s doing.
Black Lung’s intro still gives me chills!
Man well said! I think the exact same way on this.
Yes!!! Matt freeman was already my favorite bassist, and then i found out he had a youtube channel?! Literally dream come true.
Life won't wait is such cool album.
Thanks Matt for showing me how I've been playing the intro wrong for 20 years ha ha!
lol I feel ya on that!
One of my favorite Rancid songs and such a great bassline driving it.
By far your best video yet
Love the break down of the parts
Bass bunker is such a great channel, having Matt Freeman tell you exactly what he does on a track is just awesome!
As soon the song ended I automatically expected the intro to Life Won't Wait to play next. Damn that 1998 album hits hard.
This riff is still fucking up my life decades later
I didn't have "Matt Freeman starts awesome youtube channel" on my 2024 bingo card, but here we are. Great video and incredible playing Matt!
That movement is exactly what takes every rancid song to the absolute next level! So inspiring.
When the bass line's so sick you wanna give it healthcare.
That meme always comes to mind when I hear this song. Thanks, Matt!
Black lung so freaking good

Love that bass sound! Should use it on new rancid albums!
Love these gems. Great tutorial! Ive listened to this song for like 20 years and never notice these little details.
I'm almost 40 and man, almost everyday I strugle to learn a little more on bass. I must admit that mr. Freeman is defenetly what motivated to start playin' again. Thanks sir! Btw, great teacher.
Love this part so much
I mean, this melody is really very cool. It's so striding-running. A very good solution with notes like two through one.
Black lung is one of my favorites on "Life Won't wait"
