Honestly it really is an amazing channel. I was never interested in bodybuilding, but I did have some surface knowledge of some of the greats, and this channel is huge pleasure to watch.
I'm 64 years old. Frank was my inspiration back in my young adolescent years of the 1970's to take up bodybuilding. As a skinny, small boned kid, I saw the possibility of building a nice physique because my hero, Frank Zane did it! Love this channel. Thank you for this quality presentation.
None of the unsigned bands I loved made it big. So I will use this channel for the classic "I knew that before everyone else"-routine from now on. Thank you so much for the great content!
This is an excellent video! Discussing Frank Zane's achievement of physical perfection and his incredible accomplishments is truly inspiring. His physique and strong determination are something many can look up to. As a complete athlete, his contributions are unforgettable.
Such a great documentary, well done. This era of bodybuilding is so intriguing to me, politics were a huge thing, and the physiques were so varied. Frank was one of few guys holding on to Silver Era ideals. I know people think of him as one of the standards of the Golden Era, but I don't really think so. He was an outlier in that era, he was conservative with his "special supplements" and with his weight. His analytical approach is more modern than his contemporaries. You can see why he's a big inspiration for the natural community today (and for the half-natty or fake natty fitfluencer crowd).
Without a doubt, this is the best video I have seen on bodybuilding. Frank and I have a similar philosophy about the ideal physique and a somewhat similar background but I never went beyond winning the Masters Mr. USA. I don't know if Frank was natural but I am a natural for life bodybuilder. Like Frank, I taught science at the high school level. I have had 12 surgeries, 7 of which were on my legs. I was 36 when I decided to compete. In my first contest at the age of 37, I won the NPC middle weight class Mr. Connecticut title in the open division and also the Master Mr. Connecticut title in the over 35 division. The person who beat me for the over-all Open title was the heavy weight open winner. He and I trained in the same gym and were trained by the same person. He was on the "juice" while I was natural. He deserved to win because he was bigger and his legs were better than mine. PS.....After I stopped competing, I decided to get a Masters degree in Human Nutrition. That was because I learned the importance of nutrition in bodybuilding. During my competition days, all the bodybuilders were eating tuna. I mainly wanted to know what so special about tuna that made it a preferred food among bodybuilders. So my Masters thesis of 118 pages was on tuna and its effect on the physique enhancement among those who trained intensely.
Frank Zane has one of the most aesthetic physiques of all time but the way he talks about his competition isn't always the best. Great documentary. I love your channel.
yeah it's pretty funny to hear him criticize others. especially his comment on arnold in 1980 "his legs were real thin", when zane had by far the smallest legs in the lineup
Old-School physiques are the most aesthetic. No comparison with today's mass monsters. I always tell young guys that one of the best things you can do as a lifter interested in aesthetics / performance / strength is to study Old-School bodybuilding. Old-School bodybuilders were ingenious physique architects. They had a profound knowledge of the principles of proper nutrition, smart supplementation, exercise science, and muscle adaptability. If you combine Old-School bodybuilding wisdom with modern, evidence-based science, it's the best, safest, most effective way in achieving a strong, sexy, healthy, and aesthetic physique. 'Vintage Physique' by George Kelly is a nice read on the topic.
That would be your lame opinion. Big just looks way better. I looked better than zane at 19 and I started mass training at that point. Its was more challenging for one thing. Any mass monster today looked like those skinny girly boys in the beginner of their careers. You can get a body like Zane by doing circuit training and eating anything at all. Old school bodybuilding as you call it is just beginning bodybuilding. Your brain just blacks out when you see mass all you see is steroids just silly thinking
@jamesgoforth5644 Your opinion is respectable as well. If being big suits a person and they have the lifestyle to support it then it's a win for them.
It's really wrong of Frank to claim natty here, especially with the poem he wrote about dianabol and primobolen. There's less stigma around it, and he should admit what he took.
Amazing content! I do not know if the voiceover is your own voice, but it sounds like a professional to me. In that case I find it hilarious that he did the 30:55 voice 😂. If it is you congrats on a great voice AND an great eye for documentarys, truly one of my favorite channels I love your work!
This is fantastic, thank you! Zane was my idol physique when gowing up, all the best parts of bodybuilding (in my opinion) and a physique that truly seemed achievable
The more I learn about Arnold, the less I like him. Zane is perfect esthetics. That's what bodybuilding should be (in my opinion), despite how it's progressed.
Ok... Arnold didnt deserve 1980 Olympia and had some bad moves... but, didnt other had it too?... Coleman on Cutler and so on.... Arnold won 1980 on name, ok.... and others are too. But... Arnold did much more for all this than all others... Arnold was and still is Golden boy of bodybuilding
Yeah plenty of bodybuilders who got trophies they should not have won at some point Phil, Ronnie, Arnold, Dorian and so forth . Thats why we have uncrowned Mr.Olympias..
Absolutely amazing as always... Really surprised me with this one not gonna lie. Very interesting story and a good pick. Showing people it wasn't all about mass but also about proportions, symetry and display. Can't wait to see who would be next!
Yet another beautiful documentary. I enjoyed it very much. Please keep making more. I feel like Frank Zane's aesthetics paved the way for mens physique and classic.
Frank Zane might have had perfect symmetry, proportions and the aesthetics of Apollo, but Sergio Oliva looks the definition of the 'Myth' a creature from a Greek mythological world of antiquity. In my opinion Oliva had the greatest genetics I have ever seen in bodybuilding. I mean just look at his forearms, arms, calves, chest and that thick V back, at 10:50, and still has abs. I first caught sight of him as a kid when he popped up in a magazine covering a WABBA show in 1980, nobody has compared to him genetically IMO. I have never seen long full muscle bellies in every corner of skeleton with mass and hold a tiny waist like that. Only Lee Priest comes to mind but he was a small man, and Vic Richards has a shout but still falls short - he was the freak who never competed as a pro.
Homie, I feel like you and I worship the exact same bodybuilders because every single video has been one peak golden age lifter after another. Between platz and Zane I'm half expecting your next vid to be Serge Nubret
Fantastic video 👍🏻. One minor point. Mentzer was 209lbs at the 79 Olympia, not 220lbs. They were all weighed due to the weight classes and head judge Roger Schwab reported them in his contest report in Jan 80’s Iron Man magazine. Keep up the great work.
Yea he was awesome bro , sad no one even talks about him nowadays. He was the OG RUclips fitness guy. Thanks for replying and your channel is awesome btw 👍🏼💪🏼

Aye!
Honestly it really is an amazing channel. I was never interested in bodybuilding, but I did have some surface knowledge of some of the greats, and this channel is huge pleasure to watch.
Such a good channel and he us getting around half the viewers as subs so he is doing pretty good 👍
Life’s good when Iron Historian posts🙏
Zane posing to Pink Floyd is literally one of the greatest posing routines ever seen on the Olympia stage
God yes.

30:55 You deserve your own medal for that impression.
It was jarring, but awesome at the same time - like a really professional serious voice over suddenly switching gears.
I'll be honest, his body was perfect. Not too big, not too small, great symmetry. Perfect.
Lmao didn't expect an Arnold impersonation at 30:51
Put to rest any fears i had that the narration on this channel was AI generated 😂
@@NBDYSPCLyes it was literally a fking jumpscare😂😂😂
All these documentaries are so well done. Bravo Mr. Historian
Thank you!
one of the most underrated bodybuilding channels on RUclips. Your videos always get me crazy motivated. Congrats on getting a sponsor! 💪

Yes he's a snake.Everything in order to be the champ
Same here
In terms of how to end up succesfull, he may be great. But he is a deciever, arogant and probably not the good guy. Least of all humble.
True, I lost respect when I knew about 1980 Olympia thing...
Same...and I'm always wondering why he was Weider's favourite guy..,
Its Friday, im off work and the Iron Historian uploads a new video.
Exactly what i need! 💪🏼
Zane was incredible in his day. At 5-9 myself, one of the 'little guys', Zane was our role model in a world of 6-2 Arnold's.

Thank you!
He is very bitter.
18:10 - Seeing Colombo explode his left knee never gets any easier to watch...
yeah what the helll!!!!!!!!!
Your lower leg should never be pointing in that direction. Ouch!
Yea that was rough. Traumatic injury for any human but for a strength athlete, terrible.
The promoters told the competitors not to run with the fridge on their back. Franco did …..,
Iron Historian does it again! Love your videos.
Frank is definitely one of the best looking bodybuilders I've ever seen. Beyond aesthetic.

good physique role model, but definitely not personality role model lol
Agreed and the poem is very obvious in what it refers to as well.
Frank is on record saying he used anabolics. I have an old Ironman magazine where he admits to using.
He has admitted that he did.
he said it for i think his first show/very early start, and he do look indeed natural. no deep cuts , thickness or muscle mass.
I'm going to the Arnold Classic this year (as a fan) so I'm catching up on my bodybuilding history. Thanks Iron!

Haha thank you, that was a great improvisation from the narrator, had to keep it in!
Frank Zane was the end point for competitive bodybuilding choosing size over symmetry.
Every time iron historial drops a video you know i am watching it from start to finish right away, great production thank you!

Zane had the best physique I've ever seen. Modern bodybuilding folks are much larger but they're grotesque. Zane was *beautiful*. Proportions matter.
This is an amazing and beautiful era in bodybuilding. Frank Zane one of the greatest physiques of all time!
