He wasn’t eating enough. Eating “healthy” has almost nothing to do with building muscle. It’s eating enough calories to allow the body to build the muscles.

Of all the things Mr.Zane said the thing that I personally found most interesting was ((and he came back to it time and time again)) was how important it was to get actual "fotos" of Your body to be able to know what ACTUALLY look like. And that looking in the mirror will NOT suffice. The reason that I find this interesting is that I've so often experienced "dysmorphia" both negative (people thinking they are to fat or skinny) and ""positive"" people who clearly think their body has "properties" that it doesn't, that I've come to believe that we are all inherently unable to look at ourselves objectively. And that generally speaking our underlying mental state will always "interfere" and influence our perception to such an extent that what we "see"(or more correctly perceive) is more dependent on an "inner image" than what our eyes "physically register". Now I believe that this goes for both "mental properties" and actual "physical ones" (i.e. body image) but here I'm mainly concerned of the physical appearance. And so in order to have any chance of objectively look at our own bodies (when that is what we want) is to do it in such a context that we can ""fool ourselves"" that we are looking at someone else, and this can never be done when "watching" (or more correctly evaluating, critiquing) yourself "live". Ideally I would even go as far as to argue that it's better if You can not even see Your face (or more generally speaking identify Yourself, in contexts where we are not talking about just physical appearance). All in order to to decouple Your "ego" and avoid all the "instinctive mental processes" that "looking at Yourself" unavoidably evokes. At least those are my "longwinded 5c's". Best regards
Great interview with Frank Zane. A lot of excellent information from Frank for bodybuilders as well as those wanting to live a long healthy life. I was fortunate to live near the original Gold's Gym, and that's where I worked out from 1970 until it was sold and turned into a private home in the late 70s. It was an everyday occurrence to see Arnold, Draper, Columbu, Drasin, Robinson, Metzer, and so many others during my morning workout. And, while I didn't see Zane as often as the others (if I remember correctly he was working out in the afternoon after he was done teaching Math at Mark Twain Jr Hi). Frank was not the biggest bodybuilder, but I always thought he looked the best, and still does compared to his contemporaries. Many of the other bodybuilders from that era that are still alive have had serious medical issues. Whether it's from working out to failure, unhealthy lifestyle/diet, abuse of steroids, or something else, I'll take Frank's advice over the others. Thanks again for this excellent interview.

One of my favorite Escape Your Limits episodes. Frank Zane has always been my favorite bodybuilder. Every time I listen to an interview with Frank, I always learn something.
I loved this interview and learned so much. I knew Frank Zane in the 1980s and was always impressed by him then -- and am even more impressed now, as he is about to turn 79. Lifting weights for a pump -- for a lifetime -- has helped him to look and feel youthful and pain free. The interviewer does a fabulous job, too, because he asks one good question after another and then lets Frank talk. This so great!
Everything that Rick Newcombe said regarding the interview and Frank Zane is spot on! Zane is still amazing and it was a great interview! Very well done!
Really? Did you learn what his mantra was in this interview ? Because he kept talking about it on and on but the interviewer never even bothered to ask.
Drawn to him when I first started lifting and wanting to change my body.... little did I know the journey would transform me as a man. Bodybuilding principles, many things he espoused (that inspired me at 16 y.o.) still ring and prove true today. Grateful for his example and influence

@@breaks3085 yes he did. And we need to understand this that he is a product of his times where most bodybuilders didn't tell that they're on steroids and it's even common today. So take what's good in him and every individual will not have the capacity to stand on expectations of everyone .
I'm Asian and I was a great admirer of Zane from afar, the man with greatest body shape, calm & hardly spoken bodybuilder of all time. I almost can't recognised Frank Zane now. I believe it's all Sheer Hard work to come this far.
I've always admired how Zane built himself versus the bigger competitors of his era. Hearing that he didn't shoot the juice and still won the Olympia title makes him my favorite elite bodybuilder. Arnold is an inspirational guy and has an enjoyable gregarious personality. Zane's calm, well thought out demeanor is equally powerful despite his less showman-like qualities. He's the type of man who gets overlooked because he's not as entertaining, but a smart person slows down to listen to this intelligent man. His unwillingness to compromise his health is also inspirational in this world where everyone wants to push things to reckless extremes.

In my opinion Frank Zane is the epitome of bodybuilding. His physique resemble that of ancient sculptures. Proportions were perfect. He was literally my idol as I grew up and started bodybuilding 25 years ago. The guys almost in his 80s and looks phenomenal. Talk about longevity.
What a legend, and wise as well. Hope he lives a long fruitful life. One of my idols since I was a kid.
Frank Zane and Steve Reeves are the two bodybuilders with the best well defined and most ideal physiques...!!!
depends on what kinda physique you prefer. frank & steve, were a normal size on steriods, while everyone was of a size unattainable naturally. serge nubret is a bigger frank zane
2 of the alltime greats its not about massive size its about proportion...symetry
Charles Bronson as well. 👍
Really good interview that I found by accident. Certainly alot to take away from it. I love the pace of the chat too and im sure its well worth another listen as Frank dispenses alot of good advice there, thank you.
One of my favorite Escape Your Limits episodes. Frank Zane has always been my favorite bodybuilder. Every time I listen to an interview with Frank, I always learn something.
Really? Did you learn what his mantra was in this interview ? Because he kept talking about it but the interviewer never bothered to ask.
Highly insightful and informative! Excellent stuff. 💪
Glad you enjoyed it!
Absolute legend! Could not stop listening, wisdom & experience in every sentence. Loved it!
Every now and then you stumble upon a REALLY ENJOYABLE podcast….. this was one of those!!
Many thanks. 👍👍👍👌👌👌
Thank you for this I enjoy listening to Mr. Zane's perspective on things
This was extremely useful, thank you!!
We're stoked you enjoyed this episode with the one and only Frank Zane!
Drawn to him when I first started lifting and wanting to change my body.... little did I know the journey would transform me as a man. Bodybuilding principles, many things he espoused (that inspired me at 16 y.o.) still ring and prove true today. Grateful for his example and influence
Love Frank's comment on worrying "what if so and so is doing this or that," but came to the realization that the only thing that was really important is what he was doing! 11:15 ❤
Wonderful!!!!! Thank you for doing this interview!!!!! Much 💕 love from EAST TENNESSEE 💕
Arnold took up the headlines but Frank Zane possessed something special that every guy wanted. Seeing an elderly Zane is making me feel some sort of way.
It’s okay, you have a man crush
are u gay???
Frank Zane is an absolute legend. I own/read all of his books. I still use most of his training routines (tailored to my physique) to this day!
Thank you for the interview.
FranK Zane is the natural legend his aesthetics is impeccable and no steroids the perfect natural build, and to win Mr Olympia while his other competitors were predominantly using the sauce is truly mind blowing God bless and much respect a wise humble man
No steroids? Are you serious?
this man is a treasure. Blessings to you Frank Zane 😌🙌🏾
Health is wealth......true treasure.
I am 70, work out and walk daily. So encouraged me! Thanks
I have always, since I was a kid knew and followed Frank Zane but this was the best interview I have ever seen about the life and career of this amazing bodybuilder!! Thank you!
Frank Zane was one of many balanced bodybuilders. I highly admire them over the current modern bodybuilders.
Man such a great interview. I hope he keeps a journal. He really embodies stoicism. Thanks.
You’re a great interviewer, excellent work
Interview: How do I be like you Frank?
Frank Zane: Patience, understanding, setting goals, dedication, trail and error, eat, sleep, workout, take your vitamins and say your prayers.
Frank Zane the G.O.A.T.
Loved this interview never even knew of this guy....one thing that was a jewel to me was" work out at a tempo" Make "light weight feel heavy" and work at your goals and be about you and not others.
3:36 so he found his strengths and focused on those. Excellent!
Frank Zane Total Fitness Course would be an instant Bestseller.
Along with Robby Robinson, Serge Nubret, Frank Zane is on my top 3 favorite bodybuilders.
He has a very calm voice he looks very humble
zane is an absolute legend.
What a class act with great wisdom!
Fantastic Interview with Frank Zane. In the Mecca Era of training, The physiques of Frank Zane, Sergio Olivia and Flex Wheeler come to mind in terms of great asthetics and symmetry. But, Frank Zane's methodology of training discipline was years ahead of it's time.
but he's telling Lies
@@breaks3085 what lies ?
Plz be particular.
@@vibhorejaiswal2997 he used steroids to build his physique ,
@@breaks3085 yes he did.
Great interview. Thanks for making this happen
This was such a great interview I loved it!
Frank Zane! The most awesomely symmetrical bodybuilder ever 💪 🧠 What a fantastic interview ✨
Great!! Really shows that getting mad or angry is just a waste of energy. Positive energy is the way to go. Thank you this was so very good.
Positive and Negative Energy create Polarization.
Balanced Energy is the way to 'go',
Or channel that negativity into greatness. MJ style
Wait, did you just say that Zane didn’t take steroids?
I've watch this 4 times so far! You just can't get enough of Frank Zane. The man is full of Wisdom and. Rocky of Bodybuilding!🏆💪
Thank you so much Frank Zane! Inspiration to me I so many ways. Not only in respect to your accomplishments, but who you are and what you represent. I met you years ago in Portsmouth, Ohio. I was a competitive body builder and we spoke of your vacuum and that I was able to do as well. You invited me to train with you and regret that I couldn’t financially do at that time. I’m 54 now and reflect on your inner montra, getting me and my body back. Thanks again and sure you know the impact you have made on many individuals! Randy H
he was a scientist , body builder and spiritualist just really exceptional
Fank Zane. So intelligent, thoughtful. The Zen Master of bodybuilding. His physique is the only in bodybuilding history that I would truly want in my everyday life. His symmetry and proportions were superhuman. Like those Superman action figures they used to make in the 80s.
I’m a 49 year old skater, and I have been following this man since the beginning. I’ve never felt better, and now seeing this, I’m convinced… Zane rips.
Frank Zane the most symmetric and 3D looking bodybuilder. Big respect💪
Iso lateral training is probably the most interesting training concept I’ve ever heard. Made perfect sense when he explained it. 🔥 I am definitely going to experiment with this at some point.💪 What an interesting and insightful person …legend 🙏💪
This is a one of a kind interview, I applaude your dedication to quality videos. Well done!
Frank is a Legend. Arnold learnt from him a lot
No at all.
What a nice bloke Frank Zane is! Such an good interview. Many interesting observations and insights. He has a great sounding voice too.
FRANK is TIMELESS
My favorite physique of all time. Love his point of view and his wisdom.
