Frank was my inspiration when I was pumping iron as a teenager in the early and mid 1970's. I didn't like Arnold or franco. Frank Zane was an artist who used his body as a canvas. Ahh, the days of eagerly awaiting the latest copy of "Ironman" magazine...They were good times. I miss the 1970's...
About 25:00 in, you hear maybe the most insightful thing I've heard about winning. He's applying it to bodybuilding, but it can apply to any endeavor. Brilliant interview.
I agree with most of what Frank Zane stated in this interview. Certainly the part about being yourself. Body building can be very vain. Even to the point of absolute arrogance. Its refreshing to hear such honesty, in the midst of what was likely, a very chaotic time in body building history. As far as his comments about size. I agree that size isn't as important as overall symmetry, definition and posing. Every body builder brings something unique to the stage. Something they want the judges to see. Zane brought to the stage a body that wasn't big, but was symmetrical in its overall development as far as muscles were concerned. His techniques regarding posing were designed to purposely showcase that symmetry. The fluid movements from one pose to another, allowing judges and the audience to see for themselves, how equal his body was from one side to the other. Ego is very much a part of life. For the average body builder back in the 1970's and 1980's, one had to possess a fairly sizeable ego in order to compete with so many amazing body builders. Frank Zane, by all accounts, wasn't a big body builder, like Arnold for example. But what he lacked in size, he more then made up for with such a symmetrical beautiful muscular body. Certainly, for guys who are not that tall or large, he stands as a true testament to what a man with a smaller frame can do if they set their mind to it. JR💪

Growing up in the early 70's Frank Zane became a major role model for me in many ways and, aspects of my personal and later, my professional life. His mindset for training, perserverance and discipline was second to none. He was not the biggest bodybuilder on stage, but he sure was the most asthethic and sharpest on any AAU or Mr. Olympic stage. When he shares his training on implementing slow negatives and focused heavy lifting. This discipline and mindset is what made these athletes of that era rare and unique. Thank you Frank Zane👍

Hey Frank Zane fans! Want to get a Frank Zane Body? We just released another exclusive interview with the man himself: ruclips.net/video/yZthBN25ebA/видео.html
Great interview with Frank Zane. which rhymes with sane i.e.possessing a balanced state of mind, which many goal oriented folks either lack or lose along the path to their goal. Today we are saturated with magic supplement/testosterone commercials aimed at men over 40. Still the ultimate tool is the grey matter between one's ears and Zane controlled his mind and body superbly. "Mens sana corporae sana".
Great interview with one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time. Interviewer did a good job by listening, asking good questions and letting Frank talk. Well done😃
Awesome. He was winning when I started. All my inspiration was literally from Frank. Same body type as him but taller. Every pound of muscle was a MFer.
What an incredible man! This mans patience and perseverance at a time when bodybuilders were all over 200 pounds!! He brought true aesthetics into the limelight! Symmetery, proportion, definition, conditioning and posing! Hope today’s bodybuilding appreciates guys in shape as opposed to mass monsters!
It's the judges that like the Mass Monsters like Dorian Yates, Ronnie Coleman, Jay Cutler, Phil Heath and Big Ramy. That's why they started the Classical Physique division at the Mr Olympia to satisfy fans like you and me that appreciate and like the Aesthetic Physique where the whole package is in perfect balance which is very hard to do. Zane had no weaknesses and his detail & conditioning was flawless. At 5ft 9in you can still run 5 miles every day if you want to and these mass monsters today couldn't sprint 50 yards to save their lives without collapsing and they can't even wipe their asses because their so muscle bound at 5ft 9in at 265lb at 3% bodyfat and at death's door on stage. They are dropping like flies from all the drugs they are doping.
What I remember about Frank, was he wasn't the BIGGEST bodybuilder, but DAMN that Man was ripped, and cut up so clean....it was unreal. He almost gave ME the impression that he was clean of anabolics. .he literally didn't show the signs I associated with anabolics, and what I specifically saw by myself, IN myself during MY own personal time I used anabolics He worked awfully hard at it... definitely. One of the greatest physiques of all time and by far the most intelligent bodybuilder of all time. The articles he wrote and programs he created targeting the mind in bodybuilding are phenomenal!
Frank Zane is revealing how he created himself within himself first. He states that he would write down what he was supposed to do as if it had already been done. THAT technique can be applied to anything in life that you want to achieve. It’s a PRINCIPLE that works in all endeavors.
The thing I like about this guy is that he wasn’t blessed with the best genetics compared with the likes of Arnold but his dedication and determination got him to where he got and what a fantastic body he developed....Frank Zane legend
1976 -1983 were great years in professional bodybuilding----- the best years....with Frank Zane leading the way. The bad-ass winner of the Mr. Olimpia contest 3 years------- legitimately. Not politically. Frank Zane!!! The WINNER Of the Mr. Olimpia contests 1977-78 & 79. Damn------ Frank Zane is the ruler and badass of all bodybuilders. The master.... of it all.
Zane: a very smart guy both in and away from the gym. Two things I take from this interview: focus and perserverance. I think every champion, in whatever sport or job, has these two ingredients for success in spades.
Frank Zane one of the Best Body Builders in American History! The lean mean body building machine, under 200 lbs. Franco Columbu was under 200 lbs also and one of my favorite people. I like Arnold Schwarzenegger too, the three of them have had thier unique ways of doing training. Too many other great body Builders to mention. Franco, Frank and Arnold my favorite. Folks that's my opinion of the body building circa.
Amazing interview. My brother in-law went to the 77 Mr. Olympia. He told me that Frank did not pump up back stage and instead had his own personal motor home he would pump up in. Not sure if he was pulling my leg. Has anyone ever heard this before? Franks right about how a big guy wins in most cases. I think that’s why Shawn Ray could never beat Dorian. If he was the same size (height wise) as Dorian it probably would have been a game changer.
I recall reading this as well in Muscle Builder Power magazine (this was what Muscle & Fitness magazine use to be called). It was part of what he discussed in this interview of staying away from everyone and being a mystery until showtime and then Wammo!

Reeves, Nubret, Paris, Haney, Robinson and Serge Olivia & Zane. I would take the only "Natty" of the group- Steve Reeves 24/7!
Fantastic interview and great questions . Thank you 👍💪
Frank Zane is intelligent and my role model! He’s called “the chemist” for a reason. I want to be as enlightened and cool as him when I’m his age! I’m a guitarist too! I love his guitars in the background!😊👊🏾🎸
One of the greatest physiques of all time and by far the most intelligent bodybuilder of all time. The articles he wrote and programs he created targeting the mind in bodybuilding are phenomenal!
thanks a lot, Frank Zane is too little interviewed and seen - you do an important job to highlight his career and draw from his knowledge.
The end was the best ;-))) Frank saying clearly .. The Legend Focus, and Focus
Arguably the most symmetrical bodybuilder ever!
Zane looks phenomenal in this thumbnail shot. Perhaps one of the better pics I've seen him in.
Frank Zane is revealing how he created himself within himself first. He states that he would write down what he was supposed to do as if it had already been done. THAT technique can be applied to anything in life that you want to achieve. It’s a PRINCIPLE that works in all endeavors.
Frank Zane had unique physique..the best n aesthetic...he still looks good
When he told the story about the dream with Franco I thought he was going to say franco got out of the car and picked it up.
A classy, interesting chemist; and body symmetry at its finest! Frank Zane all man, no fakery*
That was great! Zane's always my favorite. Thats why I still train to improve through every adversity.
One of the greatest ever mind and genetics. Very inspiring for sure.
The thing I like about this guy is that he wasn’t blessed with the best genetics compared with the likes of Arnold but his dedication and determination got him to where he got and what a fantastic body he developed....Frank Zane legend
He had the best genetics for aesthetics (muscle insertions).
Vince Warren yes I agree with that Vince
Folks that's my opinion of the body building circa.
.. Good interview ,... One of the best physiques, ever ,..
A terrific interview.
Great questions those are what I would ask as a true fan !Well done not all repetitive cookie cutter questions!!
He’s so awesome he has two watches.
gotta be symmetrical
One is clearly his Apple watch
U know wut time it is
Gotta confuse the brain...
A Mason perhaps
Love Frank Zane, my favorite BB for sure!
Frank, no doubt the best symetry ever in bodybuilding.
