@@Ty-138 I have definitely seen them play Detroit live, and I'm pretty sure I have seen them open the show with it. What I can't remember is if it was in Detroit or in Chicago. I almost think it was at the House of Blues in Chicago. I can't remember. It's hell to get old!
This song brings me back to a time I was “trying out” for a band in high school. Went to guitar center with a couple friends who wanted to see what I could do and this is the song I played. When I played the intro, they looked at each other and were shocked. They didn’t know rancid like I did. Matt, you’ve inspired so many bass players with your phenomenal bass lines!
Hi Matt , I would really like to dope sick girl, Adina. Ohhhh man sound system. Rancid and Op Ivy have been a part of my life since I was a youngster. Thanks for having this series for the fans Matt!!!!
one of my all-time favorite Rancid track and seeing how much you still enjoy playing it makes it a million times better and I didn't think that was possible. You're definitely a legend.
this is all a dream come true as a life long freeman fan!! as an upright bass player myself, would love to see some Devils Brigade stuff and the basses youve played in the studio, ive seen a white one in live videos on youtube, your technique and so on. cheers matt!
Matt, this is the song that inspired me to buy a bass and I still can't play it at full speed, after nearly 20 years of on-and-off practicing it! You are the greatest bass player in my mind.
Matt, unless you make one of these videos for "Holiday Sunrise" I will forever be convinced that there's NO ONE on Earth who can actually play the bass line to the song properly.
Once I travelled to the US (I'm from Spain) and did a bus trip from Boston to NYC listening to this song in a loop. I didn't have my bass at that moment, but this was the first song I practiced when came back home.
Matt, these videos have inspired me (at 54) to pick up bass after 40 years of playing guitfiddles. Been playing 4 strings for a year now, has revitalized my love for music, and I'm actually way better than playing 6 strings. Thanks for the inspiration; you are one of the most underrated bassists ever. Peace, bro.
It is always so incredible to watch a master of their craft, show us their art. Thank you for the decades of inspiration Mr. Freeman. I've been a fan since the Op Ivy/ Dance Hall Crashers days.
I remember seeing you guys in southern Virginia somewhere (Norfolk?) back in '93 after this album came out. I think it was some dive bar and there weren't many people, but it was a great time and we got to hang around briefly with you all at the bar after the show.
Matt, Matt, Matt… Most note-dense bass lines sound too technical or prog-rock-y, but yours are fast and dense and sound absolutely fantastic! So melodic.
Ha. Thanks dude. I really appreciate this. I can't believe the way you play some songs. Some are in completely different positions than what I've seen/ played and thought were dead on.
QUESTION: It would be so easy to do simple root/5th bass lines, what pushed you to go as "extra" as you did? That was so amazing to see up close like this.
Watching these videos has been a reliable highlight of every week for me. I'm pretty sure I spent the summer of '96 in my basement with my first bass and unreliable tabs just brute forcing my way into learning as much of ...And Out Come the Wolves as possible. I'm pretty sure that learning to play along to that is the only reason I became okay enough to join a shitty teenage punk band. Now - nearly 30 years later - I'm in a shitty middle-aged punk band! Thanks, Matt!
He looks like a Teamster. Talks like a calm Special Forces dude. And he plays the bass the way Miles Davis played the damn trumpet. The guy is the definition of legend.....except he's still here chillin on the couch being a genius. Unicorn mafk.
Rancid 1993 is one of the best punk albums recorded. I saw you on Pitt Campus at Bellfield hall in 1994 with Avail and Pink Lincolns.Great show and you and Tim were so nice when l talked to you.
The bass lines on the first album are all amazing and cool✨ very technically impressive and have a great sense of style🎸 Master Matt is truly amazing !!
when i was a teenager and i picked up this cassette it changed my life. one of the most influential bands on my life ever. you guys are literally punk rock heros
These videos are awesome of the nine times I've seen rancid play. The one thing I always take away is how much fun you're having when you're up there on stage. Watching these videos is like going to a show and seeing you play live each and every time. Keep up the good work. It's amazing! BTW awesome shirt I saw them play at the colony in Sac a couple of months ago!
When we were 15 (‘93), we spent two days learning the verse bit of Detroit on our bass guitars. The rest was a bit much at the time, lol. Freeman taught me how to play fast major scales on the bass. Thanks, man.
Really this was my first impression of Rancid. This was my new favorite bass line by my new favorite bass player 93-94' Long overdue in saying...thanks Matt!
Matt, you are the reason I picked up bass decades ago. I’ve spent the last 30 years of my life teasing out your bass lines. You’ve contributed to the soundtrack of my life, from epic parties to hanging out with friends to the toughest times. Through my early teenage skate punk phase, street punk phase, skinhead phase, and now middle age, you’ve always been in rotation with Op Ivy and Rancid. You are a master craftsman and a maestro who deserves all the recognition and accolades. I tip my hat to you. I would love to see Freeze Up in a future Bass Bunker video. I can’t say see ya in the pit anymore because my old ass will be at the bar, but the sentiment remains.
My god, you are fucking amazing to watch play! Rancid has been my favourite band since 1995! I've seen you live too many times to count, and every show is so fucking great!
this song has so many great licks. Thanks for making this channel and posting, its so awesome to see exactly how you play and approach these songs. great stuff!🤟🤟
I went his weekend to a bassclass and everyone talked about their favorite bass player, I talked about mine, Mr. Freeman and I was proud. Thank you, again! Cheers! ❤
F**king awesome Matt, this song always had me thinking wth and to see u play it evokes the same feeling, could listen to play thru this whole album to be honest, outside of that black derby jacket is close to my heart, thanks for giving us fans a glimpse
Matt, this is probably on my top 5 Rancid bass lines. Absolutely fantastic. For us, unskilled bass players, the song is nearly impossible to play (even following along). But to think that you actually came up with this bass line. It's incredible. It's sounds great and it fits the song perfectly. Thanks for making these videos.
You doing these bass bunker sessions is one of the coolest things you can do for your fans. Thank you! And since you asked, I'd love to watch you play Radio!
Glad you made an intro and seem like you are trying to stick with the RUclips channel. It’s always a pleasure to see your videos pop up in my feed. Can you do some more lessons on how to play your songs? Sometimes the tabs on the solos are hard to keep up with.
Dude you are such a bad ass. Thank you so much for posting these. I’d also love to see more videos talking about your gear. Other basses, amps, strings, anything.
What a f****in ledgend!!!! Matt, you are THE BEST, we love you man.
Love his face when he plays some of the older stuff. It's like he's saying, "what was i thinking when i wrote this???"
lol i think thats more of a "this is hard af" face hahaha
Everyone gushes over Maxwell Murder, but that first LP was just chock full of blistering basslines.
Yes. All of that
@@ThinkyPain Foreal bro. That first LP had the sickest basslines.
Smiling and still loving it... its awesome to see
One of my favorite Rancid songs ever. In my opinion, this is the one that should still be in the live set.
Agreed, even after seeing them 4 times in Detroit, it was never played there. We were waiting for it. I will be patient. Things to come..?

I dont think I have ever seen anyone have so much fun playing music.
How big happiness is to see your bass hero playing his tunes with such a joy... We are waiting for White Knuckle Ride. 😊
My god. This is the song I play people when they claim anyone other than Matt Freeman is the greatest bass player to ever live.
Came here to post this or “Clockwork Orange”

My 3 favorite Rancid song of all time. “Old Friend” is my all time favorite Rancid song.
Hi Matt , I would really like to dope sick girl, Adina. Ohhhh man sound system. Rancid and Op Ivy have been a part of my life since I was a youngster. Thanks for having this series for the fans Matt!!!!
i second Adina
@@friend_xtra third, love that song so much
One of my absolute favorites!
