A message from Sally: (her account is having issues at the moment.) Thank you for featuring me!✨ I'm glad he covered a lot about the girl metal scene in Japan, and me!🔥 It was great to be on the radio show with him and a lot of fun!🥰 Please check out my RUclips channel and other social networking sites!🙌
I am mid 50's Japanese old metal dog. Thank you for introducing Japanese girl's metal scene. Those girls are just "girls around the corner" such like we can find them working in some shops around us. They don't say "I am a metal girl, yeah". But once they grab a guitar, they play pure metal overwhelming us. We are enjoying the "gap" between their 2 faces like movie of "Superman".
That’s so awesome. Kudos to you, and thanks for sharing your experiences here. They are fascinating, talented women, and I’ve really enjoyed diving into the world a little bit.
Japanese musicians are really outstanding, especially women. Currently there are many excellent all-female rock/metal bands like Lovebites, Band-Maid, Nemophila, Hagane, Trident, Fate gear, Koiai, Hanabie, Lonesome blues, Bridear, East of Eden, Scandal, etc., and mixed bands like Asterism, D_Drive, whisky dust, Unlucky Morpheus, Wagaki band, etc. Miyako, from Lovebites, is an amazing guitar shredder and a concert level classical pianist but also can play drums and bass. Show-Ya are the pioneers of Japanese all-female rock/metal bands, since the 80s.
@@thebuccilist "so kind" 😂 ftw you start attributing virtues to a woman simply because they even spoke to you and didn't ban or swipe left on you 😂 it's getting crazy out there, female groupies or the s-words whiteknight mobbing begins when they take over all incel hobby spaces and charge for entry
I'm a 75 year old British metal head who remembers seeing bands like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple when they were 'new'. About 4 years ago a friend suggested to me, that because I like bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, I might like this all female Japanese band, Lovebites. I was dubious at first upon seeing the RUclips thumbnails of them, but was my friend ever right. They are in my opinion one of the best rock/metal bands I've ever heard (and seen, I went to see them play in London last summer, twice) The slightly scary thing is, as the video suggests, they are not alone. The Japanese female rock music rabbit hole is deep and full of amazing bands and musicians, and I recommend that anyone who enjoys rock and metal music jumps in, you will not be disappointed.
That’s a great story, thanks for sharing. I’m right there with you, it’s pretty amazing how deep the waters are not just with talent, but the sheer number of bands that can really, truly rock. And it seems like there are new ones coming up all the time. Rock on, thanks for watching 🎸🤘🏼

WOW. What an exceptional list of artists to check out. Thank you so much for writing this, I will absolutely put some of these bands into my listening mix this week. Very excited, thank you.
There is one correction I would like to make, there is no Li-Sa-X Band anymore, they evolved into KOIAI (recruited new singer and added drummer), still all female and still rock/pop-rock with super technical playstyle. They are great with an all star crew. I would also like to add STMLT All Female Metal/Idol? RUclipsr band. They are on a hiatus sadly, but I would recommend their most recent show from this August at Yokohama ZEP
Girl Metal is aptly named. Band's like Destrose,Aldious,Mary's Blood, etc started this Awesome Movement and bands like Bridear,Lovebites,Band Maid,Sally,Yashiro,Mayto,etc... have helped propel it into the World Wide Movement it has become today. Thank You Japan.
It would be fair to say Show-Ya were the 1st back in the 80's, and have done a lot to support the current all female rock/metal bands. They put on a show every year called Naon no Yaon, in Tokyo, where they have only female acts play.
@@maximushaughton2404 bandmaid are the first to seriously break through internationally. Not the least because they have devised a profitable touring model involving controlling costs by living in a state of the art bus but also having live nation work for them under contract rather than just leaving the initiative and profits to them. This is what happens when you have both a champion poker player and an elite business school graduate in your band. Miku's a real street hustler. "she gets everything she wants plus the wallets and carkeys of everyone there" the band says. GLAY in a joint interview gave them huge respect for this specific achievement as well as breaking into Lopalooza. Hanabie played Lopalooza this year as a result of bandmaid's success. Hanabie are a metalcore band - so Japanese women are breaking down the doors of EDM and mainstream.
Great interview, thank you for taking the time with Sally to provide more detail into the realm of Girl Metal. Truly enjoy listening to the stories about their personal journey's throughout the music industry. Much Respect.🤘
Between BAND-MAID, LOVEBITES & BABYMETAL Japanese rock and metal absolutely rules the planet. BAND-MAID is by far the best rock band on this planet. Been a fan for 11 years. Been a fan of BABYMETAL even longer. And a fan of LOVEBITES for about 7. But BAND-MAID is on a different level. Their songwriting & Saikis voice and style just blows the entire music world to shreds.
Should wait until BAND-MAID is touring again. They are the best 'girl band' in the world as well as pretty much one of the best bands in the history of Rock.
Thank you for subtitling the interview. As as Japanese learner, I enjoyed stretching my ear to understand much of what Sally was saying. So appreciated!
I have listened to Japanese music for a few years now. I never really thought of it as "girl metal." It is just metal that happens to be played by girls. They are not just good for girls. They are not just good for Japan. Most of the best music in the world is coming out of Japan these days. And it is not just metal. Pop, rock, jazz, blues, classical, etc. are all on another level in Japan.
It's not. The bro who put this video out is just trying to be clever and turned out looking like straight twat trying to do it. I'm trying to get the word out about BM but fuck this GURRRLL METAL bullshit. It sounds like some effeminate rock critic trying to be clever.
"Girl Metal" is an attempt by publicity seekers to make more cute the idea of women playing metal. It's only Jpop that usually dreams up these titles.I 've been following Koiai since they formed in the last couple of years and they are the best hard rock/metal band anywhere right now- Li-sa-X and Hazuki on guitars 'nough said.
@billmcleangunsmith. Couldn't agree more. Most of the best music happens to come from Japan. I've never heard of females playing heavy music referred to as Girl Metal. It's just great music regardless of whatever style both men and women happen to play. Pigeon holing be damned.✌️🇦🇺
Sally is a good guitarist but her band, Mellows, has only released so-called 'live' MV's in the last 6 months, where they play in front of an audience but with the recorded audio coming through the speakers. I've been following Band-Maid for 8 years and Lovebites for 5, as well as Hanabie, Nemophila, Otoboke Beaver and many others for a couple of years. It's not the scene or the music that's new, just any interest being shown by the western audiences. I've watched many great bands through the decades since the 70's - Zeppelin, Floyd, Zappa, Santana, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Sabbath, Queen....and on and on - but THE best Hard Rock band on Earth (IMHO but also defiintely true) is the all female - women, not girls - Japanese 5 piece Hard Rock band called Band-Maid while THE best Metal band on Earth are the all female - women, not girls - Japanese 5 piece called Lovebites. Never seen musicianship, composition or stage presence to the levels those two bands put out at live gigs.
The trend of all-female rock and metal bands in Japan actually started in the '80s and was pioneered by bands such as SHOW-YA, Princess Princess, Shonen Knife, etc. The trend declined in the '90s but had a resurgence in the early 2000s with the introduction of bands such as Galhammer, SCANDAL, Destrose, Aldious, Mary's Blood, CYNTIA, BRIDEAR, LOVEBITES, FATE GEAR, etc. There's even an Anime and Mobile Game Franchise called BanG Dream! where the voice actresses for the characters are skilled musicians and they are the ones who perform during live concerts. BanG Dream! has 7 real-life bands so far, they are Poppin'Party, Roselia, RAISE A SUILEN, Morfonica, MyGO!!!!!, AVe Mujica and Mugendai Mewtype.
@@thebuccilistI should say SHOW-YA and SCANDAL cause when it comes to longevity they are the ones that have been around for such a long time. I mean SHOW-YA was one of the pioneers of the trend of all-female rock bands in the 80's and SCANDAL was the one who was there when the resurgence in the 2000s happened. Anyway, recently SCANDAL finally got the record of the longest-running band in the sense that in their 18 years of existence, they never had a line-up change or ever took an indefinite hiatus I mean sure SHOW-YA has maybe been around for 43 years now but they have multiple lineup changes over the years and even took an 8-year hiatus in the '90s.
Japan in general, has a big rock/metal scene and "culture", which is going back to the 70's/80's , Loudness , X Japan, Galneryus or Anthem for example are some bands that are playing Hardrock/ Metal for decades. And Western Rock/Metal acts are super popular over there. Some bands like Mr. Big are literally " Bigger in Japan", than in the US ( pun intended). Western musicians like Marty Friedman or Paul Gilbert have been super pupular and like "ambassadors of Western rock/ metal" . There's a reason why there are all these "Live in Japan" Albums, recorded over there. Also learning to play a musical instrument is part of their overall education and highly regarded. Many of these " girl metal " musicians, like Sally in your video, picked up an instrument at school and then got influenced by the music their parents were listening, then discovered more bands and in true Japanese fashion said themselves: "This is cool, I can learn to play this myself, lets start a band.. " That explains the insanely high level of musicianship of these bands. And they're really enjoying playing live. You watch any live video by Band Maid, Lovebites, Nemophila etc etc, first thing you notice, besides the amazing musicianship, is: they're smiling, headbanging, engaging with the crowd. That's really "contagious ".
This is so wonderful to read. Thank you! The insights here are really truly fascinating. I’d love to learn more about education angle of instruments here.
@@thebuccilist Yeah, learning some type of musical instrument is pretty much the norm in Japan and it's encouraged. People in the comments have mentioned Lovebites and Miyako, a lot. She's a classically trained pianist, turned metal guitarist, multi instrumentalist. The second guitarist in the band, Midori, also started out playing piano as a kid and later joined the brass band in her school, before turning to guitar. She later enrolled in the prestigious Tokyo Musicians Institute and studied there under various big name Japanese guitar players incl. the guitarists from Babymetal Kami Band & Syu from Galneryus. The school is also owned by the founder of ESP Guitars, who not only finances it but also gives endorsements to top students, as it was the case with Midori. Ibanez, the other big Japanese guitar brand, also does this type endorsement. For example, Lisa - X from KOIAI, has been an endorsed Ibanez artist, since she started out as a teen. She's another prodigy, who plays various instruments on top of been a virtuoso guitar shredder. Btw. Singer Asami from Lovebites, you guessed it, she also plays piano & studied ballet & jazz on top of it..
The joy of playing, that's what's outstanding. As well as their technical prowess. In short, the future of heavy music is being made by Japanese women _right_ _now_!
It seems Sally’s father’s influence and her garden of “things that were popular in 1987” brings out the old rockers who are appreciating her talent. Ronnie James Dio would love her.
@@PulverizerA I read something like that he said but he was directing it at the Hair bands with zero substance. Sally can out play most of the Male shredders out there. Nothing Soft about her dynamics and chops.
There are a lot of amazing bands from Japan across all genres, some of which are top 5 bands for me right now, but to say alt-rock is almost being completely abandoned in the west is a misleading statement, if you're saying that I'm assuming you don't listen to a lot of bands....
@@SoftOceanBreeze I'm talking more from a mainstream viewpoint. In the 80s and especially 90s alternative music would top the pop music charts constantly, which certainly doesn't happen nowadays. You would also have great new artists appearing on a near daily basis :-)
I was stationed in Japan in the 90s. That place was still metal at a time when America had already gone grunge. I fell in love immediately! I'm delighted to see a whole new generation in the game, and more women. Fresh blood keeps metal alive! 🤘
@thebuccilist Both. There were not a lot of Japanese bands at the time, outside of some underground acts like Sabbat. Metal as a whole was still huge, and I could find rare CDs in stores I couldn't find in the US, and bands like Gamma Ray and Iron Maiden were still selling out huge shows in Tokyo, which unfortunately I never got to see.
@@idahoairplanes1235 You are spot on here. It’s deep waters and the movement is just starting to get international footing. Will be exciting to see how it progresses.
It is absolutely invigorating that there are so many all-female or female led bands from Japan, and not just in metal. So much talent and, yes, beauty. Great people making great music that holds up against any of the best from any era, genre, or place.
I saw Babymetal Last Night in Oklahoma City...and the moment they were done the staff was yelling at everyone to "Leave Now, Get Out"...LoL...no milling about, they wanted to clean the place and go home too!! Kinda wished they would have lets us hang out so we could talk to everyone there...and its too bad that Babymetal never really does meet-and-greets...that's sad, but I'm happy I saw them!! I'm also a big fan of Band Maid, and I have always said that Psy turned the heads of the West to the East and then Babymetal showed Everyone what young girls could do for Metal (breath of fresh air) and Band Maid took advantage of the open door and walked through to become one of the Best Rock bands (East, West, Boy or Girl) in the World today! Will be looking out for more of Sally and groups she is in like 'LOC' and 'Mellows'! Kitsune UP!!
@@eatsmylifeYT Maybe, but you can't deny what happened with Psy. First Video to hit 1 Billion Views on RUclips. And of course you can argue for X-Japan as well..but the direct link with the current Girl Rock phenomenon in Japan, at least from a Western perspective, goes directly to Psy for the Turn and Babymetal for their Women empowerment ideals...thank you Kobametal!!
@@watcher2554 That's comparing apples to oranges. Psy had the Korean Wave to ride on while Shonen Knife had to do it solely on their own. Babymetal has no "women empowerment ideals". Their main goal in forming the group was to produce a mashup between two genres. Idealism had nothing to do with it. Stop making shit up.
@@eatsmylifeYT Either you never knew or perhaps you forgot...2015 Vogue Japan Women of the Year... I'm guessing you never read the article or know much about Babymetal during their first 10 years. I'll take it that you are younger and didn't live through that period or you would know just how much Psy dominated the western market at the time, and when Babymetal came along what a Jolt that was to Western Metal. But it happend. And I don't make shit up.
@@watcher2554 Yes, you do. In 2015, I was 44 years old, you dumb shit. Psy didn't dominate the market. People just found him a novelty and he looked funny, that's why he became popular. And if you think Babymetal is a band, I feel sorry for you.
Great interview with Sally and the others. Sally absolutely deserves this time in the spotlight. She has worked so hard to be where she is today. I love that matte black Dean. Sally and the others were very generous with their time. Thanks.
I'm an old school hard rock/heavy metal fan from the good old days. I've been to as many concerts as I could back in the 80's(Rush/Scorpions/Judas Priest/Iron Maiden/Dio/Def Leppard to name a few). Japan is kicking it hard(especially the women) & I love it!. Band-Maid(my favorite), Nemophila, Asterism, Koiai, Nek!, Maximum the Hormone, are just a few that I hope to see someday live in concert(gotta add LOC to the list now).
Well you have metal bands like ezo and loudness which are both kick ass metal bands as we . I’m an old school metal head chick on my 50s and definitely believe the metal is one big family no matter where you are from. because you all have the same taste in music genre as well.
@thebuccilist saw them in LA on one of their two tours I think they did then. Saw Shonen Knife a few times with Redd Kross mid 80's and then a few years ago again. Followed Japanese music since around 1975 and Kitaro....
Sally was a member of a heavy metal band called Lipstick until a few years ago, and the band's first vocalist was mayu, who later became the vocalist of Nemophila.
@@thebuccilist Sorry, but I don't know much about Lipstick other than it is a band that Nemophila's mayu was a member of in the past. There are a few videos of Lipstick on RUclips, but I got the impression that their music is old-school heavy metal from the 1980s. As for Nemophila, I would recommend the song DISSENSION, which was written when there were five members.
I'm flying to Japan this week and will be there for 2 and a half weeks! I'll see Gacharic Spin & DOLL$BOXX at three different concerts all around Japan, I can't wait!
@@thebuccilist Babymetal was the first band I was turned onto, then Band-Maid came along & blew my mind. I have since listened to several metal bands both male and female. @@iqbalmuhammad2920 Yes they were. My cousin sent me the video for Give Me Chocolate, that got me intrigued, so I explored the Japanese music scene, and found some very talented bands both female and male. If you haven't seen it, they performed on the Colbert show in 2016, that show put me on a search for Mikio Fujioka, and I became of huge fan of his.
Interesting video, maybe a bit misleading... the phenomenon of female metal bands has been around for almost two decades now, and it is much more complex and is strongly related to the Japanese love for hard rock and metal in general, not just female metal.😉
Very much misleading. Women have been actively involved in Japanese rock music for forty years now. They are just churning out pop projects for white men with Big Dollars. It's just business in Japanese.
@@COTTERO Thanks so much for the insight here. I’d love to learn more about it. What are some of the reasons it’s very complex? Thanks for watching btw 🤘🏼
Thanks for the glimpse into this world. I love the power of what artists and communities generate when they come together. Appreciate you showcasing the talent in the context of culture. 🎸✨
Nice interview and Sally's an excellent guitarist - good luck to her and her multiple bands! There are lots of great hard-rock and metal bands in Japan, and yes, many of them are all-female bands or mixed-gender bands with virtuoso female musicians such as Hal-Ca or Misaki Fujiwara. I've been called a music snob a few times, so you can guess that I'm not at all into idol culture and that I'm not going to like a band just because it has women in it. There are many fans of these bands who are similar to me in this regard. The thing is, some of these bands are creating outstanding, even groundbreaking, music. This is becoming more recognised by professional musicians around the world (one topical example is that just last week, Kanami Tōno became the first Japanese guitarist to get a signature PRS). Nevertheless, there are unfortunately still plenty of people who don't think about them in the same way as the best male musicians. Hopefully that will change.
@@kicorse Wonderful to hear your insight here. I’ll have to check out those virtuosic musicians. How cool to be the first PRS signature artist in Japan 🎸. Thanks for watching!
Commercial considerations also play a part in who gets a signature PRS. And which band do you feel makes groundbreaking music? I'd like to check it out.
@@Habib_Osman In principle, yes, but there are Japanese PRS players in much bigger bands (e.g. Toru Yamashita of One OK Rock, Ryo Kawakita of Maximum the Hormone) who would have got a signature guitar first if commercial considerations took priority. If you look at PRS signature artists more generally, they give out very few and they do seem to be used as gestures of personal respect. Some albums/EPs that are both outstanding and highly novel are Unseen World (Band-Maid), Guernica+a (Asterism), W (Gacharic Spin) and Zero (Sokoninaru), but that's just scratching the surface - other people would recommend different artists (or different albums by the same artists).
@@kicorse Commercial consideration goes much deeper than only the size of a bands following. 2 avenues would be specific demographics and generational shifts. But I'm not at all an expert at Japanese rock so I can't give the answer. And thanks for those suggestions! I'm curious, especially for Band-maid, they must be special to get so many recommendations.
Sally is awesome, I love her other band Mellows too. I seen clips of Hanabie in the intro, would be incredible to see you do a video on them!! They are so cool and becoming so popular in western countries too the past couple years! Great video & sub'd!

It's not just in Japan that Japanese female bands are very successful. There's something new emerging in the world of rock, with more and more female bands gaining market share. Their success has reached the point where Western fans travel to Japan just to see their shows. I suggest that when you can, you investigate the following bands: Band-Maid, Lovebites and Hanabie and their Western fans.
Hi Anthony, if you're in Tokyo for a bit, I have some friends you might want to check out whom are also great musicians, though of a different style- more 'fusion' and 'prog'. For example Rie Tomimatsu- artist name: 'Rie aka Suzaku', Juna Serita, Kanade Sato, Senri Kawaguchi (one of the best drummers in Japan, if not the world!) and others. Right now, Kanade is playing in an excellent band (whom are part metal, fusion, pop and prog) called 'KOIAI', featuring a superb guitarist, Li-sa-X. (Please check them out! For example here on RUclips, see KOIAI's 'live' video of 'A New Picture') But Kanade also plays with Rie in a band called 'Muses', whom often play at the 'Blue Mood' club. I was in Tokyo for the first time in September for almost three weeks and had a blast, as well as seeing some of these friends and even got to jam at another friend's club known as 'Virtuoso Akasaka'. That friend is a great guitarist by the name of Yabori Koichi, whom often plays with the great drummer I mentioned, Senri Kawaguchi.
This sounds fascinating. I would love to meet up with them, and thank you for offering. Feel free to shoot me an email or DM and I’ll reach back out. Glad you had a great trip in September!
@@thebuccilist I will get in touch soon. In the meantime, here is the 'live' video of KOIAI I mentioned. I think they could be huge. You can hear Kanade's superb drumming, and Li-Sa-X's guitar solo (at 1minute 35) is absolutely stunning! ruclips.net/video/rX6SP5bQZH8/видео.htmlsi=zVenyN3BZOXGackI
IMHO Japan is light years ahead of the West in terms of rock and metal. Some of the best bands in the world are female Japanese rock bands. I hope you take a look at some of the other acts in the scene, so much talent hidden behind a language barrier. BAND-MAID, Lovebites, HANABIE, Gacharic Spin, Nemophila, Aldious, Bridear are my favorites, but there are so so so many more awesome acts.
If I ever get a daughter, even I'll teach her some guitar basics and hope that she'll learn more than me with practice, because I wasn't initiated during my childhood. I grabbed a guitar only at the age of 15. These people are lucky to have the guidance and encouragement from their families.
I went to CBGB's in 2004 and saw a 6 band Japanese Punk band lineup. One of the bands was a 3 piece girl punk group called "Bleach-03" they were one of the best all night! (The best being "Peezlander-Z" who were immensely entertaining!)
I feel like this scene has really blown up thanks to so many of us being forced to stay home during the pandemic. Plus the shows are absolutely electric.
@@thebuccilist the react channels really played a big role. Personally, I found Dir En Gray on a sound track. Exploring them got me to stuff like Maximum The Hormone, Galneryus, and Crystal Lake. Then RUclips started recommending a group of girls in maid outfits. Eventually I broke down and clicked it. That's how I found Band Maid. I spiraled down the rabbit hole after that. Now I'm just trying to do my part spreading good music to people that wouldn't find it otherwise.
@@thebuccilist In California! I saw them May 31st in Sacramento and on Oct 12th at Mayhem Fest in San Bernardino. They killed it! hey, i'm a fellow female guitarist (my youtube channel doesn't look like it, but i post on instagram!). thought i'd give my two cents about my experience. honestly, i picked up the electric guitar because of seeing japanese female guitarists. i was inspired by them in a way, had i not seen any female guitarists i would not have picked it up. it was the early 2010s, so i played a lot of k-on and stuff like that. a lot of other female guitarists/rockers inspired me, such as stereopony, scandal, riko kohara from the sketchbook (now in bang dream), and band-maid, among many others. picking up the guitar has led me to some of the most invaluable moments in my life, from making my first guy friend in a gig to playing in musicals. a decade later, i love how the popularity of the female music scene accelerated, especially with anime franchises that blew up like bang dream, bocchi the rock, and girls band cry. i heard there's another female rock band type of anime (besides bang dream's ave mujica) in january 2025. btw, i really felt what sally said at the end - i took a break from electric guitar for a few years because i really wasn't just feeling it, but i came back to it with renewed energy, and i finally could play fast like i've always wanted to play. japan, please keep this up, and keep inspiring more girls to take up music and create amazing life stories of their own :)
Thank you so much for sharing this. I loved reading about your experiences here. May I ask what part of the world you're located in? Just curious to see how far this is reaching. I hope you keep playing and growing and expanding your world through music. Wishing you all the best.
What's the band's name where Ai Hasegawa is? This girl is so humble yet so charismatic, I'm so attracted to her, any more info about her? Overall all the girls here are amazing and needs more recognition.
The band with Ai Hasegawa is called LOC (Last One Call). Agreed on her charisma and humility, she's a wonderful person to be around. And I'm totally with you on all of them, super talented.
This has been happening since the 80's in Japan. Doesn't anyone remember Show-Ya? All female heavy metal group who were known for their musical and technical skills on their instruments. They even got an American singer named Steffanie Borges (who has Japanese roots) who sang and wrote lyrics in English to try and crack the American market. Also, it's worth noting that Shinjuku is where ESP Guitars are based and Marty Friedman lives there.
That's really cool, thanks for sharing the insight here. I actually was able to visit the ESP custom shop in Ochanomizu a few months back, and it was incredible!

I know Sally's work since some years ago when she played in the band Lipstick, where also Mayu, the current Nemophila singer, was (under the name of Sindy). Is a shame all her former band albums are sold and she hasn't uploaded anything of them to Spotify or another platform. Grear guitarrist! I hope she gets bigger recognition in her current band Mellows.
This was a very comprehensive and professional look into something I see almost every day. Queen on street has been performing in Phuket, Thailand for many years now. Her name is Fiat Fu, and she has already been on Ted Talks and performed in over 20 countries. She's about to start a one month tour in Canada. All of her band mates are female and young. Fiat herself is only 15. Im actually worried about this group of young ladies who are used to a certain culture and way of life. Today's North American trolls can be hurtful live, and behind the fake amnesty of a cell phone. I just wanted to pass along that this type of cultural phenomenon runs throughout Asia. Now that Rose is about to come out with her solo album, all types of music might be taking part in promoting bands and musicians this way. Great job on the interview. 3 weeks is a long time for just one interview. You have far more passion for getting interviews than I do. That's cool😊 Best wishes always, Robert Zeligson
Thank you so much for the kind words and the insight here. I will definitely check out Fiat Fu, sounds like a fascinating story. 20 countries and only 15 years old. Wow. Thank you for sharing it, and for watching, as well!
Well... I can only say that a few years ago, female metal and the LOVEBITES video inspired me so much that I started writing a fantasy novel in which the heroines are girls with names of girls from different bands. I hope to finish it soon. I have to write it because I just can't stop thinking about it.
Japanese musicians are top notch and passionate about their art. And I'm glad to see that girls are taking their place in the scene and doing their things, just as the guys are, rather than just be typecast as J-pop idols.
A more appropriate title would be "why the world is going crazy for Japanese girl metal." BAND-MAID, Nemophila, Lovebites, Hagane, Aldious, Hanabie, Mary's Blood, Fate Gear, Unlucky Morpheus, Trident, STMLT, Mana Diagram, Bridear, DOLL$BOXX. So many great girl bands. I feel I should mention BABYMETAL, too, though not an all girl band, BABYMETAL opened the door for a lot of these bands internationally.
That they are a rock idol group with not too many members. Some idol groups have way too many members that some of them feels disposable. Quubi has overall great discography too. I like all of their songs. Their EP "Solid" is my favourite release from them. Their live performanes are also very entertaining!
Never thought I'd see Quubi mentioned here. I salute you. They're definitely one of my favourite idol groups. Difficult to choose though with Jiemei, Neo Japonism... yeah nah there's too many ahah. I hope people would check out the idol scene in general, and put to bed all the common misconceptions and wrong assumptions (and outright lies) about idol groups.
Yeah I haven't tried that many idol groups yet. But last year when I found Quubi which was the first idol group for me I got kinda obsessed with them. Never thought I would find an idol group that works so well for me!

Secret Skills! Secret Passion!
Wow there’s so many amazing bands to check out. And agreed, the musicians are totally amazing.
Good list. Thats a well rounded start into the Japanese Melting Pot of Kick Ass Music.
Koiai is not mixed.
@ , Oh, you’re right. KOIAI is another all-female Japanese rock/metal band.
Add my favorite Kokeshi Doll. Hehehe. Of course, there are many more bands. But due to copyright, many records have sunk into oblivion((

Haha truly yes. She's a bundle of energy. And so kind.

Why are the Japanese so good at music?
@@grahamreed8774 Band-Maid.

Wow. That’s so interesting and such deep waters. Which band would you say really brought it moreso to the forefront?
Glad to know someone else has been listening all these years!!!
dude i love show-ya they're fire
Raise a suilen is soo unique, I'm diggin it.
That explains the insanely high level of musicianship of these bands.
In short, the future of heavy music is being made by Japanese women _right_ _now_!
japanese girls are keeping metal music alive and taking it to the next level way to go way to go keep it going strong style ❤
Absolutely! The movement they’re pushing forward is super cool to see grow. 🤘🏼
It seems Sally’s father’s influence and her garden of “things that were popular in 1987” brings out the old rockers who are appreciating her talent. Ronnie James Dio would love her.
Ha yes. And totally agree! She really carries forward that old-school heavy metal ethos.
It's nice to see fathers and daughters doing things together. 😁
Dio's on record saying fem bands like Poison killed metal. I think he'd opine much the same about these "girl bands".

Japan keeping alternative rock in general alive after it almost being completely abandoned in the west :-)
Bless you Japan!😸
I was just thinking that these bands need to get out to the West more and save rock and roll.
Ain't that the truth!!
That’s amazing. Do you mean with Japanese bands or foreign bands at that time? Or both? I bet it was a cool time.
Great presentation! RUclips, like a broken clock, occasionally gets their recommendations right. Really enjoyed this! Sally is a pint sized Beast!

@@watcher2554 That's comparing apples to oranges. Psy had the Korean Wave to ride on while Shonen Knife had to do it solely on their own.

Don't forget Sallys other band Mellows
Well you have metal bands like ezo and loudness which are both kick ass metal bands as we . I’m an old school metal head chick on my 50s and definitely believe the metal is one big family no matter where you are from. because you all have the same taste in music genre as well.

Is *Babymetal* the gateway to Japanese rock/metal scene for you?

Thanks so much for watching! I think that’s a great way to frame this whole “scene”. Like a big, ferociously creative community.
@@kicorse And that's really cool from PBS. Whenever companies are able to transcend simple economics they deserves huge praise.

Hey thanks so much! Definitely, will do. Is this a Japanese metal band?
hey, i'm a fellow female guitarist (my youtube channel doesn't look like it, but i post on instagram!). thought i'd give my two cents about my experience. honestly, i picked up the electric guitar because of seeing japanese female guitarists. i was inspired by them in a way, had i not seen any female guitarists i would not have picked it up. it was the early 2010s, so i played a lot of k-on and stuff like that. a lot of other female guitarists/rockers inspired me, such as stereopony, scandal, riko kohara from the sketchbook (now in bang dream), and band-maid, among many others. picking up the guitar has led me to some of the most invaluable moments in my life, from making my first guy friend in a gig to playing in musicals.
a decade later, i love how the popularity of the female music scene accelerated, especially with anime franchises that blew up like bang dream, bocchi the rock, and girls band cry. i heard there's another female rock band type of anime (besides bang dream's ave mujica) in january 2025.
btw, i really felt what sally said at the end - i took a break from electric guitar for a few years because i really wasn't just feeling it, but i came back to it with renewed energy, and i finally could play fast like i've always wanted to play.

Thank you so much for the kind words and the insight here. I will definitely check out Fiat Fu, sounds like a fascinating story. 20 countries and only 15 years old. Wow. Thank you for sharing it, and for watching, as well!
My favorite Japanese Metal Girl is Sakura Yoshida.
I will check her out today 🤘🏼. Solo act or is she part of a band?
@@thebuccilist she has a band.
Well... I can only say that a few years ago, female metal and the LOVEBITES video inspired me so much that I started writing a fantasy novel in which the heroines are girls with names of girls from different bands. I hope to finish it soon. I have to write it because I just can't stop thinking about it.
That's so cool! Round back here when it's public to read. Would love to check it out.
Woah! Fantastic interview! Will be following Sally and her music!
@@jenniferbeck8596 Thanks so much! She’s an amazing artist 🤘🏼
I recommend Mellows, a kawaii metal band she is in.
Japanese musicians are top notch and passionate about their art.
And I'm glad to see that girls are taking their place in the scene and doing their things, just as the guys are, rather than just be typecast as J-pop idols.
Same here. And totally agree!
Sally is awesome!! 🤘🔥So many fantastic bands coming out of Japan!!
Totally agree! She rocks, and the whole scene is full of talent.
Sally is awesome ! 🤩🤘🎸❤️🔥
@@nicoLovebites666 totally agree!!
Heck yeah!!! She rocks
This reminds me of my favorite Japanese singer called Sayuri who sadly passed back in September. R.I.P Sayuri
I’m not familiar with her. I’ll have to check her music out this week. Do you have any song recommendations?
@@thebuccilist I personally like hana no tou but my recommendation is your choice
Kudos for getting over 100K views.
I appreciate that! Thanks so much 🎸
As a side note, Sally's former bandmate Mayu (Sindy) is the vocalist for Nemophila.
I wasn’t aware of this. Thanks for sharing the insight here. I still need to check out Nemophilia 🤘🏼
A more appropriate title would be "why the world is going crazy for Japanese girl metal."
BAND-MAID, Nemophila, Lovebites, Hagane, Aldious, Hanabie, Mary's Blood, Fate Gear, Unlucky Morpheus, Trident, STMLT, Mana Diagram, Bridear, DOLL$BOXX.
So many great girl bands.
I feel I should mention BABYMETAL, too, though not an all girl band, BABYMETAL opened the door for a lot of these bands internationally.
Wow so many more bands to check out. I’ll dive into some of these this weekend.
@@thebuccilistI think a few that I mentioned aren’t 100% all female but are female led bands. All worth checking out though.
Japanese girl metal is so cool 😎 I only listen to like a couple of bands but I’d like to start listening to more
Right? They’re amazing. 🤘🏼 Which bands have you listened to?
There are so many awesome girl rock bands or solo female rockers in Asia that it's hard for me to keep up 💖💯
Totally with you here. Theres so much talent and so many artists to choose from. Do you have any favorites?
Nice Interview w Sally 🤘🤘🤩
Thanks so much!! She rocks 🤘🏼
Japan is truly the land of amazement.
I totally agree. It's an amazing place.
I hope people would check out idol group "Quubi" and especially their music video for the song "Dear my..."
Will do. What do you like about the group?
@@B31zzy17 when you have time to dive deeper, I guarantee you’ll be in for a wild ride! The underground idol scene is insanely rich and diverse from pop to extreme metal and everything in between.
it just makes sense, japan does everything better, coming next- child metal…. 5yo kids w big baritone guitars and drums from the rush tour…. killing it
Hahaha that’s hilarious
