I think for RUclips content creators and diy video producers this could be a killer app.
That and businesses bootstrapping their marketing and cranking out vids on social and their site. So many who could benefit from this.
Excellent analysis. Thanks a lot
I'm excited!
Great video, Matthew. I can't wait to try it!
Thank you, friend! Probably heading to the Apple Store today to finance an iPad Pro... 💸
I like your channel, the pace, the pro way of looking at the FCp. Keep doing what you do. Subbed.
Wow! Thanks, Mike! Welcome to the channel - it's great to have you here!
I couldn’t think of anything worse trying to manage final cut pro on an iPad. I want the big screen
I’m surprised how well it works, TBH. Especially when you’re using touch/pencil.
I hope the ease of use factor is there. But I will not pull that trigger until they bring external drive support like Lumafusion
I don't think external drive support's coming...
Looks interesting, but what about the features we use for commercial work like RAW to Log conversion, Lut/Rec 709 support, colour grading, noise reduction etc.
I don't think FCP for iPad is intended for that level of work. Once you move up to needing to do that on your projects, the intention is to transfer the project to your Mac to finish it up. On those types of projects it's meant to get things started.
And what will happen to people who wasted 350€ on FCP for Mac if it turns into a subscription? “Sorry your one-time payment ain’t valid anymore, pay us more?”
I am okay with the current state of FCP, there are some flaws but the community has created amazing plugins and other workarounds. Nothing stops me from simply using DaVinci Resolve for color grading when I need it 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
Why would I pay them more for features that will probably be unable to compete with the plugins? I understand they can add something like “magic selection” (or how it’s called in Resolve), but I already have the keyper plugin which works just fine 🤷♀️
Why Blackmagic CAN afford constant updates for their software but literally the world’s most expensive company can not without turning it into a subscription?
I am so damn scared they’re about to turn FCP into iMovie 2 or something, I am ready for everything but FCP drifting even more into “easy to use” direction, it is a professional software and sometimes it feels like they’re planning on turning it into something with very limited functionality 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Great breakdown my dude! I’m definitely excited for where things are going with this new update! I think the most underrated feature is probably going to be the smart reframing, because even though we can do it now on the existing version, it looks like this new update is going to make it even better. Which is great for those of us who don’t like to or practically can’t shoot in vertical mode will still be able to produce good content within it.
Would love it if it tracks people and objects in the frame so we don't have to keyframe it as we go...
@@matthewTobrien Yeah that would be so great.
great video thanks
Don’t forget iPad pros and airs of external monitor support. So you can get a near 1:1 desktop editing experience with a iPad
underrated
I couldn’t agree more, I really hope that the FCP iPad development really allows a slew of new features to appear in 10.6.6 and further. That Apple now take us into the future of NLE’s like they did when 10 launched and really start throwing their weight around when it comes to innovating again.
I am excited, and extremely happy that this long dry spell of seemingly non development has ended in something that looks epic and hopefully functions as good as an Apple products should. It is a bright future indeed.
No longer angry at a company who allowed BMD to one up them on their own hardware.
Thanks for the video Matt!
I'm feeling the exact same way. And we still haven't seen the M-powered Mac Pro, nor have we seen a desktop version of this all-new Final Cut Pro. Things are looking up!
Between the words Project Media and Selecl at 06:15 you see a symbol that looks like 田 I bet a coffe if you press it it turns into ミ swapping into list view. 🤙🏽
I saw that too and wondered… Gotta have a list view I’d think.
I am a Lumafusion user and I feel that there is still some way to go for full touchscreen video editing.😁
The soundtrack feature looks really interesting, but what I think apple is doing with the alteration part of the tracks is something similar as they've been doing with the "Drummer" feature in Logic Pro.
Where you can import a drum loop from their library and alter it by dragging it to fit your session, which then it automatically generates an intro, verse, chorus etc etc.
If that's the case we can only expect instrumental loops similar of what we have in Logic.
But I like the idea of Apple having a build in music Library something like Track club or Epidemic music, that on itself is worth the 4,99 p/m subscription.
Great video!
Looking fwd for you to do a full review on it!🍎💥
Good to know about Logic. I'm not familiar with their loops but this definitely sounds similar. Definitely hoping Apple expands the Soundtracks library instead of leaving it as-is for years and years. Appreciate you watching!
9:06 Good point about soundtracks and subs. I'm a huge fan of Filmstro. I have a lifetime licence. It's extremely effective and satisfying if you are interested in cuing and arranging music in film. Brilliant concept, well implemented😍
I certainly hope Apple doesn't stick us with the initial amount of soundtracks for years and years, never adding more content to the library.
Strong and efficient ending. Also, it’s ok to not be ok at the lettuce section
I like to just smash to black sometimes without any outro or wind down. :)
I am on your boat!. I would gladly pay $50/year just to have opportunity to do the rough cut and simple editing on my iPad Pro on the beach and then just polish the edit on my Macbook back in the room. I am a freelancer which freelancing is my main source of income and staying in touch with my clients is crucial. But on the other hand I love to travel so this fills up all of my check marks. I just hope the desktop version will get long wanted futures also.
I can't wait to do a rough cut of a video on the iPad on a plane ✈️🌏
It's amazing you created such a quality, in depth video on this topic this fast! I had ZERO interest in FCP for iPad because 1. I don't have an iPad (actually I have a 3rd Gen iPad. Don't think it will work) and 2. I hate editing on small screens--even a 16" MacBook Pro is too cramped for my old eyes. BUT, now, this looks incredibly well thought out and I wonder if the touch and pencil interface might make it more doable than a typical workflow on a small screen
I'm wondering the same thing, Phillip, and I cannot wait to try it out. I know ultimately I'm gonna want to be in the command center when I'm choppin' some serious broccoli, but I also like to screw around with "quick and dirty" videos for my channel members and social media and this could be a great way to get that content done.
Thanks for the kind words about the video - there are a few issues with it (namely the lack of smooth transition between my a-roll and the voice over stuff I added in as I discovered more about the app while writing and editing this vid). Started setting up to film it at 8 am and got it uploaded just over 12 hrs later. It's amazing what you can crank out with drive and focus... and the efficiency of Final Cut Pro!
No external hard drive would be a deal breaker because Apple charges a billion dollars for a hard drive of any significant size
Yeah, a 2TB 12.9" iPad Pro is EXPENSIVE. But I think Apple is also seeing everything moving to cloud storage, and I have to think we'll be streaming the media in our edits soon enough - not playing back from files stored locally.
I don't know how to avoid editing directly on the iPad instead of on an external drive to minimize using up data space on the iPad. The library buildz up quickly and I struggle to manage keeping space available on my hard drive.
Upon researching a little, I notice that Apple has renamed FCP. There are two forms: 1. FCP for iPad and 2. FCP for Mac. I am hoping that they keep the distinction between both and that iPad is just a subscription application while the Mac version remains a life-time version for desktop.
I think we'll see an all new version of FCP for the Mac that looks just like the iPad version (with a lot more functionality of course) and it's gonna go subscription too...
@@matthewTobrien If they do that, I hope they will make it something like Final Cut Pro Original what we have paid for and Final Cut Pro w which is subscription.
I just want to say Apple still has not made an official calculator app for the iPad, but instead developed Logic and Final Cut.
I want a built in Adobe Podcast-level audio enhancement A.I. tool in the new FCP Desktop! And also the Music Remix feature from Premiere!
Would be interesting for someone to compare ipad vs laptop for FCX now. I need to upgrade from iMac and the lack of screen real estate scares me for iPad.
I totally hear you. And yes, it would be great to compare both system (I hope to do so).
Just like you said: those black spaces In between clips give me the idea of black frames
Haha - it's gonna mess with my brain for a minute!
Tell us how we are importing video files into the app.
Yes, I hope to cover that!
It Would be cool if this would trickle over to iPhone later on. I don’t know if that’s realistic or not though.
As a keen-am (keen amateur) I will sub to it. Software ain't developed for free; softdevs need money too). I'm just happy that Apple IS still improving/enhancing FCP. I. am learning DR18.5 "because" but will still do all my fam/RUclips work on FCP.
I’ve got ‘em too. Even to the tune of $2k+ on an iPad Pro 🤑
apple doesn't need the money for development - the argument is that you will never own the software - if you can't pay, or your card is declined and you have no internet - you're screwed. They can turn the lights off. They can offer to buy and sub but they dont. They want to own us as a revenue stream.
Well, we don't own the software even without a subscription. It's a license.
And how would you feel if you made an incredible piece of software and users who bought it ten years earlier have been getting consistent updates but never having to pay more to get them? It'd be like buying a new car in 2023 and several times a year Ford updates your vehicle for you at no additional cost - you benefit by getting all the latest updates but Ford loses because they spend a lot of capital on R&D, execution & implementation. It's a bit lop-sided.
I get it when it comes to a physical product like a Rolex watch - you buy it once and it works forever, never needing any kind of update. But if you need it serviced, you gotta pay.
I think with software we've benefited significantly by Apple's reasonable $299 price tag for FCP - I've used it for 10 years with fairly consistent updates at no additional cost. Personally, I think there's imbalance there, especially when I used a 15" Retina MacBook Pro for 8 years running FCP. If the software is there at a low cost to entice us to buy hardware more regularly, fine. But they make such good hardware that you don't need to ditch it every 2 or 3 years just to use the software. The value they provide is so significant, I think they know they can ask us to chip in a bit more to even things out. Would I say the same thing about some other companies out there? No. Why? Because the value Apple provides me (and many others I know) is so massive in comparison to other companies. You want $49 a year for FCP for iPad? No problem. Take the money.
Between software and hardware with Apple I've probably invested, what, $20k over the last 15 years? But I've made HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS using their products literally every single day. I'm okay with needing to pay to access their incredible software if their products are going to continue to allow me to earn a living.
@@matthewTobrien
While I understand your points about software licensing, updates, and the value that companies like Apple provide, it is crucial to recognize that the subscription model prevalent in the music industry creates a significant divide between those who can afford consistent access and those who cannot.
Indeed, we don't own the software and developers need to be compensated fairly for their work (which at apple they always have been). Regular updates and improvements to software are essential to maintain its relevance and usability. However, the growing reliance on subscription-based models is disproportionately affecting people with extremely limited resources, essentially creating a two-tier system where only those who can afford to pay monthly fees get access to the latest and most efficient tools.
As you mentioned, Apple's reasonable price tag for Final Cut Pro and the fact that their hardware lasts a long time does provide value. However, not everyone can afford to pay for a subscription. This disparity raises concerns about accessibility and fairness.
Because we can afford it doesn’t mean shit. This isn’t about us. This is enabling tech companies to absolutely control our spending - what do you think is going to happen with hardware? Subsciption ONLY. If you don’t see that supporting subscription influences more subscriptions.
It's essential for Apple and software developers to be mindful of the negative impacts of the subscription model on low income individuals. One solution we could all do more would be in promoting open-source or low-cost alternatives to mainstream software, ensuring that a wider range of people have access to the tools they need.
Last thing - while subscription-based models do have their uses and some value, it is crucial to recognize the widening gap of those who cant afford to pay for access.
There needs to be a concerted effort to develop and promote more affordable and accessible software for everyone, regardless of their financial background.
Im more interested in seeing if we can use external HDD for our edits like desktop version, otherwise 128GB iPad will not be enough for 20-25 min 4k 4:2:2 10bit video
Sadly SSDs are NOT supported for use on the iPad with Final Cut Pro.
@@matthewTobrien where can I find the fine print from Apple regarding all these detailed notes?
That is an excellent question... I don't know that they do have a white paper for FCP out yet.
@@matthewTobrien in that case using FCPX on ipad means buying more storage iPad, i think im good with macbook version
Not compatible with external drives or back and forth between the mac and iOS? Crazy that they don't have that when they control both hardware and software in their own moat of an ecosystem. It's a no from me until that compatibility happens seamlessly.
Yeah, I think they see the future of editing as cloud-based and they'd rather move people toward iCloud subscriptions than see them buying external hard drives. I'll admit if I never had to use an external hard drive again I'd be thrilled. And round-tripping between devices is probably one of those "problems" they're going to solve in a future update. They need to wow us all when that becomes possible, and I imagine it will once FCP 11.0 comes out and looks just like the iPad app.
@@matthewTobrien Do you think they'll move to iCloud video editing? I've been hoping for that, but the uploading of footage would be quite the feat, especially considering the files sizes of raw 4K+ footage. I don't think the highest tier of iCloud storage will last very long.
How about cloud SANs like LucidLink and Wasabi? 😮
Have to say that if AVID can really ruin the Subscription Model and they are a big company with Heavy Influence in both Audio and Film, then my optimism for Apple is still a little shaky! I understand your point about the price not being a factor if you're making profit and I agree, but I personally still find it hard to just rent the NLE and never really own it being a downside! I don't mind renting plugins or "additions" to my NLE for testing purposes, but at some point if there is never a path to ownership then I will definitely be switching to Resolve! Hopefully they don't go subscription also?
Matthew, can you give an honest answer. Should I switch to Davinci Resolve, from FCP? As a pro.
The only people I see switching to Resolve are those who don't love the Magnetic Timeline enough to hate track-based editing, those who love all the detailed technical capabilities of Resolve, those who need a DAW for doing some serious audio mixing, and those who LOVE color correction and grading so much that the tools Resolve offers are irresistible.
If you read all that and say, "Nope, that's not me," then I'd stick with FCP.
So without external drives, how are we accessing footage? What’s the media management pipeline? Exciting news, but tempered with many, many questions
"Editors can access footage from Files or Photos and save it directly inside a Final Cut Pro project."
I know there's a USB-C to SD Card dongle for iPad, but I'm not sure if that will allow you to import footage into FCP. They may not have a UI feature that allows for that kind of importing - the Browser may only be able to look at the Files and Photos app. So definitely a lot of things need to be sorted out there. They didn't show anything in the marketing materials about editing from non-iPhone or iPad footage...
@@matthewTobrien definitely an interesting move. I hope they don’t forget the whole ‘Pro’ for MacOS users, though…
A rather large gaffe or oversight, I feel. I know they'd rather stick you for hundreds of $$ more for a larger capacity iPad, but for "Pro" video editing, you're limited to internal storage only? Come on. Hopefully that's only a temporary limitation.
For logic i don't really see the value being that I'm that deep into cubase.
But for final cut tho
My concern will be editing audio !! Since there is no headphone Jack , how will we make sure Audio , Sound effects and voices are properly edited?
I think they’re hoping you’ll be buying AirPods and HomePods…
super easy to plug headphones into the thunderbolt port on an iPad with a less than $10 adaptor or most portable hubs
Get an audio interface like Focusrite 2i2. $100. Then you can use it with the new Logic too.
@@jamesnyers1721 facts.
@15:50 I know you are trying to be optimistic here but how do you explain Davinci Resolve then? DR already announced AI assisted features WAY ahead of FC even though its a one time payment software. Subscription doesn't guarantee more frequent updates and its something that Apple has to prove itself.
Apple has a history of either leading the way in certain areas and lying in wait with others. They'll sometimes let the other players do their thing and they'll watch to see the results, what the feedback is, what the demand is from consumers and they'll use those - in a sense - beta tests to fine-tune what they've created to make it the better execution of that product or feature. I think Apple is more than happy to let other companies develop exciting features (with quirks and areas of friction) and then swoop in and deliver a more efficient, elegant, well-designed version.
$50/year is nothing compared to Adobe suite at $600/yr! I only use AE, PS, and AU out that entire suite, it was cheaper just to go for the whole thing! But really, if apple adds collapsable (rights free) music and stock selection, $50 is nothing!
Agreed!
Haven't watched the video yet. But being a Premiere user, I jumped to Davinci Resolve, now I don't find it interesting to try out FCPx. Am not sure what the future for Apple holds if DR is in the lead.
Agreed FCP or Motion needs to start getting more features such as facial recognition, better tracking software/rotoscoping and things along these lines. 10 years of FCP and I have my issues resolved with Resolve
But are they? I mean it’s an incredible tool. On one hand node-based grading was ahead of its time, but track-based editing is a relic of the past - a paradigm destined for the dust bin.
And you know BM knows it with their efforts to develop the Cut page. Mark my words - they’re going to borrow as much of FCP as they can so they can merge the best of the Edit page with the Cut page (and tracks ain’t an ingredient in the dish they’re cooking up).
Best thing Resolve has going for it is Apple not worrying about the tiny percentage of video pros who are working at the highest levels. I mean, Apple is via 3rd party partners, but high-end pros don't want to have to own 27 standalone apps to do color, sound & VFX turnover.
Anyhow…Apple just changed the conversation. Again.
Except for their insistence on relying on a dying paradigm (track-based editing).
@@matthewTobrien Hey Mat I am sorry if my comment was rude or anything like that. I didn't mean in that way. Actually I used FCP for a project not long ago and I really did like it. But seeing how DR is working it is much better than Premiere and I am leaning toward it and learning it slowly. And yes just like how Google and Apple copy themselves when it comes to iOS and Android, this copying features war won't end any time soon! 😆
I always saw DR as a Windows version of FCP (visually), it is also miles ahead of Premiere. But it sits on its own with good features.
For me this is just a iMovie update/replacement... I hope the "full" version will come for Mac desktop
But just think about I where it’s going to go if THIS is where they’re starting… Gonna be crazy what it can do in a few years.
So let me get this straight. They’re brining out a App version for IPad but because I’ve it already on my IMac will we get this free already seeming I’ve paid £350 when I got it for my imac. And if they make the desktop version subscription based after all of these years from people buying that’s a dirty trick. We know the people behind Filmic Pro were Dirty to their customers and now we’re seeing this trend with Apple in the future.
Iphone also
I'm editing a full length documentary on FCPX. I left premier because of the subscription model. Looks like I'm leaving fcpx now to. Lol editing on iPad.
FCP is great for docs. I guess you'll have to try Resolve moving forward...
@@matthewTobrien I've used resolve for color grading for years. But have friends who swear by editing on it for projects. I honestly miss FCP 7. FCPX for desktop/laptop is good for bigger projects now, but when it originally came out it wasn't.
i hope everything u said is true
Me too!
Too small on the iPad, I can't see it.
Haha … the photo’s in 6k - I should probably enlarge the thumb. Plus I had to fudge it on my iPad mini (which isn’t compatible with FCP for iPad).
FCP FO LYFEE BABBYYYYY
Having access to the ML hardware should allow for a lot of fun, “features” (eye candy for its advertising) good move apple $$
I can’t wait for all the ML features. Bring them on!
Better than Davinci?
Haven't used Resolve on the iPad, but I have a feeling I might prefer FCP 😁
Hope no one pay for that. They going to see that people are willing to pay a subscription and the next FCP it’s going to be like that!!
I'm sorry, Apple, WTF do you mean USB-C drives will not be supported? are you kidding me?! You sell me an iPad PRO for Final Cut PRO and I'm not ALLOWED to use an EXTERNAL DRIVE?!!!!
I have been trolling these FINAL CUT FOR IPAD IS SO GREAT videos - im sorry I HAVE TO COMMENT - THIS IS NOT FINAL CUT!!!!! OMG!!! If you cant edit a Final Cut project in it - or use Final Cut plugins in it - if I just changed the name to LUMAFUSION - how would it be any different (oh you cant even use external drives in this app😂...). Im not just bashing the lack of features - or even the SUB - I make my living using Final Cut as well - so this is not an issue for me - BUT - what benefit is it to me to have two COMPLETELY different NLE's in my work flow?? - the PIPE DREAM - was that we could start projects on the go and continue the edit SEAMLESSLY on the Mac - and Vice Versa - anything less is just Lumafusion with less features right?? its one thing to justify spending $4.99 to extend my workflow mobile and on the go - its another thing ENTIRELY to expect me to have to have to PAY for All my third party plugins TWICE every time to use them on the go and on the Mac. This is EXACTLY what almost SUNK Final Cut when it moved from 7 to X - everyone freaked about the plugin support so they jumped to Adobe - but this is not REPLACING Final Cut - so why do I need to now support two complete separate systems???
The Mac version of FCP should not be part of a subscription service since the Mac computers cost too much already. I know people are coming up with reason to pay the cost, but I am not a fan of subscription services unless it is music, movies, and TV shows. This is the reason I stop using Filmic Pro subscription. We all will own nothing and not be happy.
We don't really own the software when we pay a one-time fee either. We're just licensing it. When people would sell their Final Cut Pro 7 (and earlier) discs on eBay they'd get flagged for copyright/license violations and then removed. I get the initial reaction to more subscriptions but if you're running a business or freelance career using these tools, you just need to charge more to cover your costs. Businesses happily raise prices on consumers when costs go up - we can do the same to our clients when new tools come around.
@@matthewTobrien I am looking forward to seeing how FCP and Logic Pro are implemented on the iPad Pro. I hope it is nothing like GarageBand and iMove.
@@matthewTobrien yes, but that sounds like we own nothing and will be happy, seriously. we ad a human, cant let that happen.(not about mac
I get the ownership argument but on the flip side how would you feel if you made a piece of software and sold it for $1,000 and then updated it for years and years for the customer but never got any additional revenue from those constant updates for those original buyers? It'd be like buying a vehicle and keeping it for 20 years and the auto maker consistently updates it at no additional cost to you but at a high cost to them.
I do not like working on iPads ... even writing. Please, Apple, don't make me switch to DR.
You should be good when it comes to FCP for desktop - unless your line in the sand is paying a subscription for it. I'm still going to do the bulk of my editing on my Mac Studio - even though I just did a rough cut of a video on my 14" MacBook Pro at my kitchen table. I _could_ finish it on the MacBook Pro, but I prefer all the polishing and detail work to be done on my Mac Studio.
@@matthewTobrien Yep, same here. My main work station is Mac Studio w/ 2 monitors. I occasionally use my 13.5 inch MacBook ... well, rarely is more like it, when I travel. Like many photographers I belatedly succumbed to Adobe's subscription, so I guess we'll see if Apple goes that route with FCP. If they do, there had better be some seductive improvements.
Just a ruse to get people to buy iPads after MacBook sales slumped. It is pretty obvious. Lima fusion is ok - this won't be much better.
It’s a for-profit company. Since when is creating products and services that provide value a ruse? To me they just keep making awesome stuff that gets my Apple Card wore out…
But subscription? 😢👎👎👎
Do you earn a living using Final Cut Pro?
AI will replace the editor. Why learn this?
Because learning is one of the great joys in my life.
I wonder if after effects will ever go to ipad lol
Seems like Adobe is far behind now in the NLE Wars. Is Adobe Rush on iPad?
no hdd support? that's a complete deal killer. Also, one of the biggest strengths of FCP was the one time fee.
I have a feeling Apple is focused on selling iPads with 1 and 2TB SSDs, and I wouldn’t be surprised if editing in the next 2-3 yrs starts happening from the cloud, slowly eliminating the need to buy SSDs and increasing the need to subscribe to cloud storage services.
I’ll gladly pay a monthly subscription for FCP for Mac if it means the pace of innovation increases dramatically. Plus it’s just a cost that gets passed on to my clients, sponsors, etc. so it’s not like it’s taking a chunk out of my profits.
I think for RUclips content creators and diy video producers this could be a killer app.
I don’t care about the monthly subscription but the external SSD is an absolute deal breaker
@@matthewTobrien I guess I’m also trying to see where this app fits in a profesional workflow. No one I know edits off the computer’s drive. Also I like to use several plugins. Seems like too many downsides. I don’t see a time when it would be wise to choose this over the desktop version. Add an extra 50 a year. This app is dead in the water for pros that need to deliver work to clients. I can only see this being useful for RUclipsrs that need to travel extra lightly.
I haven't edited from an SSD in almost 2 yrs. But, yes, I have connected them for moving files back and forth. But even that has been pretty infrequent. I'd be bummed if the SD Card adapter Apple sells for iPad doesn't work with FCP to import footage directly into the app or through the Files app.
