    Holy cow, this is real pro-level software made for the iPad! I was not expecting that, I thought for sure it was going to be seriously nerf’d. Excellent video review, you gave us a good sense of the UI/UX, the processing speed, and showcasing some of the features they included.

    I am more excited than I should be. The tracking / text graphics, green screen action is what im stoked to see, and how easy it is to cut / slice / magnetic edit with the pencil. I primarily edit to music so locking a clip and seeing the wave form is also a thing..... ugh... DO WANT. I bought the m2 1tb 12.9 just for this.

      @@FilmEditingPro - I’m super tempted to reach out and see if I can get in on a beta, but I’m not a massive fan of beta stuff on ios. I rock an FX3 / loads of GoPros and now an Avata to my workflow.
      How is it with slow motion footage? 120fps footage? 240?
      (If you need any clips I’m sure I can share a gopro library full of skydiving stuff)

      Thanks for the offer, that's really kind.
      It will work fine with slow motion. Remember even it's shot at 120fps but it is being played back at (for example) 24fps, it's no more demanding to play than any other 24fps content.
      Good news is that it should be released later this month (or soon thereafter)

    Fantastic and very thorough initial review. It looks fantastic and super-impressed with features. It's not watered down like too many apps are. The iPad Pro is capable of so much and it's about time, except for a small minority of software developers, that they finally use that power. I'd probably buy the M2 iPad Pro simply because of the built-in ProRes engines. Subscribed.

    Can't perform J or L cuts on the cut page. A bit of a show-stopper for most editorial work. Hopefully BMD will add that capability to the Cut page before they port the entire edit page. Thanks for the great tutorial.

    • @FilmEditingPro
      @FilmEditingPro  Год назад +1

      That's a good point. There are workarounds to create J and L cuts, but it would certainly benefit from some attention from the dev team.
      What we are particular excited about though is not the iPad replacing a traditional computer, but having it as an option in your workflow. Imagine taking an edit on set or to a meeting on the iPad. Or having the flexibility to 'take a break' and edit from the couch for a while, before returning to your desktop Computer. Just ideas, but it's exciting to see how fast this is being developed. We're sure either the edit page or another solution will be along soon.

  • @waveland
    @waveland Год назад +1

    You have answered many of my questions. Thank you. Beyond this, what about syncing audio via timecode (or waveform)? I suppose that’s in there but I haven’t seen it demonstrated. I’m also wondering about Dropbox syncing. I’ve started doing some Cloud Pod stress tests to see if it could serve as a remote hub for ingest and proxy generation (so far, proxy generation works great, but the Resolve clone tool is much too limited and the OWC “Copy That” application I’ve tested can’t check destination drive sizes correctly across the network-kinda ridiculous and too long a story for here). And now that the iPad version is more or less out in the open, I’m curious to see how much further I can push this setup and workflow. Could an editor who is on the road somewhere, sync proxies from Dropbox (dailies from a set for instance) and start cutting remotely on the iPad into a cloud project?

    • @FilmEditingPro
      @FilmEditingPro  Год назад +2

      In short, I think the answer to your question is YES! We definitely see that as being a viable workflow for editors on the road. Resolve can access files from dropbox, so as long as your dropbox client is set to make those files available offline, this should work.
      We're going to test those workflows and get a video up soon.
      Oh and btw, you can use Blackmagic Cloud store with your iPad.

Any idea how easy or difficult it will be to get the files off your system if you do have to host them internally - to clear up space for those of us that aren't using the larger drived pro models? Luma Fusion uses a few different places that have to be emptied out and I've never found it as easy as it should be.

      Hello Ken! Thanks for watching. The iPad and Desktop versions of resolve operate identically. The desktop version does currently have the advantage of officially featuring all the pages, but it seems these will be bought officially to the iPad in due course.
      That mean's the answer to your question depends on which interface you prefer, keyboard and mouse or touch screen. If you're not sure, maybe try the desktop version. We get where you're coming from, that's a good point.
      The cut page and color page offer near identical features and performance to their desktop counterparts. Resolve on iPad already contains the complete Fusion, Edit and Fairlight engine, it's just the UI's haven't been implemented yet. The dev team has focused on providing the cut and colour page first. The rest are on their way. That's why we are calling it the full version of Resolve.

    I wish Resolve (desktop & iPad) could have the option of a self-contained library (like FCPX) where footage dragged into the timeline/pool, generated proxies, timeline background renders etc are automatically imported into a single pace that also contains the associated project files. Without careful file management, I've found it all too easy to come back to a resolve project, & then struggle to re-link everything. I'm not suggesting ditching the database workflow for those that need it, just add a simplified self-contained system for those than want an easier workflow.

    • @FilmEditingPro
      @FilmEditingPro  Год назад

      Thanks, those are great ideas. Currently, Resolve on iPad only supports ProRes, H.264, H.265 and Braw. The iPad has more than enough power to handle other raw formats, and I'm sure the dev team will be bringing them to the iPad soon.
      We're looking forward to hooking the iPad up to some reference monitors too. There's currently no native way to get an SDI signal out of the iPad without going through HDMI convertors. On that front though, I think that most pro colourists will use the iPad to complement their desktop workflow rather than replace it. If you've got a large 24" reference monitor that's cost you 10k, you probably won't be building your system around an iPad. But given how accurate the iPad screen is the ability to take a project on the move, or even just do some work from your couch is AMAZING!
      Would be interested to hear your thoughts.

      I’m not so interested in rendering those formats from iPad rather than playing them with a single corrector node possibly via bmCloud. In collab scenario with post house that them does all the transcodes and syncing.
      I’d prefer to use resolve sort of like a hybrid Live grade. However live grade doesn’t have the tool set in one program…and users of it just keep asking for resolve features.
      Similar to the desktop version..There should be a way to send video from resolve via usbC to a black magic ultra studio Mini monitor box and then to sdi monitor…I have yet to see anyone do it.

      Heya Daniel. You might need to update the firmware on your speed editor before you can connect it to your iPad. You'll need to use the Speed Editor utility on a Mac or windows computer to do that.
      Then it should show up as a bluetooth device. If you have any further problems, please message again!

    You shouldn’t get halations when shooting film as motion picture film has a remjet layer precisely to block halations from occurring! You might be thinking about Cinestil 800T which is Kodak motion picture stock repurposed for still shooting, which has had that remjet layer removed so it can be developed in standard C41 chemicals. This then causes that red halation effect you see around light sources in photos using that particular film stock. You often do get a glow effect around people and objects when a (true) bleach bypass process has taken place when developing motion picture film, but it certainly isn’t red.

    • @FilmEditingPro
      @FilmEditingPro  Год назад +1

      Heya Tom! Appreciate your comment. That's a good point that stocks like Cinestill which have had the remjet removed do experience more halation. However, modern Motion Picture stocks with remjet (including Vision 3) still exhibit halation. You can see this effect many recent films shot on Vision 3. Here's an example from Marriage Story (2018) shot on Kodak Vision 5213, 5219:
      film-grab.com/wp-content/uploads/photo-gallery/Marriage_Story_050.jpg?bwg=1593757831
      You'll see strong halation around the windows and lights on the ceiling. Here's another example from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood:
      film-grab.com/wp-content/uploads/photo-gallery/Once_Upon_a_Time_in_Hollywood_055.jpg?bwg=1596550626
      More subtle, but the halation is particularly noticeable on the text 'Theatre'
      I experience halation myself when shooting 16mm and 35mm. It's more noticeable on the smaller format. ECN2 film can be processed in C41 chemicals, they are very similar processes, but ECN2 yields lower contrast. The key is that the remjet needs to be washed off the film before either process. Most C41 labs are not equipped to remove remjet first.
      Halation is less red in Bleach Bypass as a result of less dye coupling. But the glow you've seen on Bleach Bypass treated films is quite likely to be an artefact of the lens, rather than the developing process. A better way to treat the halation in the Bleach bypass might have been to put that node earlier in the node tree so that it gets treated with the same desaturation.
      Hope that helps! Thanks for your comment, and would love to hear any further thoughts you have.

      The iPad M2 Pro has a USB 4.0 / Thunderbolt 4.0 port so it can handle super fast ssds! Something with at least 2000MB/S would be great. You can of course buy faster SSDs but you probably won't use the extra performance because video files only require so much speed.

  • @KellyRFennig
    @KellyRFennig Год назад

    Interesting, possibly useful for youtube content. But no feature Colorist would work with 422 footage. It is an offline or delivery format. Most feature films are shot in at least a 4444 or a RAW format, which is what we would grade online.
    And that would be the true metric to test the app with. And a true “stress test” would be those formats over the air on a wireless network.

    • @FilmEditingPro
      @FilmEditingPro  Год назад +1

      Yes, most features are shot without chroma subsampling. 4444 footage plays back great on the iPad. Although formats like redcode or arriraw are not supported yet, you can still edit and colour on the iPad, if you've created proxies. Wifi isn't fast enough for these formats, but again if you've created proxies it's not a problem.
      Don't forget, 422 is a wide-spread standard for television and doc work though.
      There's a lot of people who will use this to edit on, perhaps travelling content creators. But a feature colourist is unlikely to use an iPad as their primary grading device. We're most excited about how the iPad can supplement desktop based workflows. Imagine being able to take your timeline to a meeting on your iPad. Fatigued working at your desk, work from the iPad on your couch. Need your project on you incase the client rings? Take your iPad.

    • @FilmEditingPro
      @FilmEditingPro  Год назад

      Heya Matthew, that's a good question. It will depend on your footage. We tested 5 simultaneous streams of 6k prores 422. In all likelihood you might not be using footage that demanding, plus in regular Multicam editing you won't be compositing the clips together either. So I'd imagine it will support a lot of streams! It's very impressive. How many tracks do you want to use?
