    This isn't about Final Cut Pro for iPad! Just talkin' about my first impressions of the 12.9" iPad Pro after a week of using it BEFORE the release of Final Cut Pro for iPad. In this video I'm discussing in-depth my first impressions of the 12.9" iPad Pro and looking at Usability, iPadOS and how much it costs vs the value it creates. I shot this entirely with my iPhone 13 Pro Max (built-in mic too) and edited it entirely with Final Cut Pro for iPad. What'cha think?

    I love my iPad. I have the 11-inch cellular 2020 so I'm overdue for a new model. I edit my videos on Lumafusion. I try the 12.9-inch iPad for a few days I and my friend switch just to see how it was the experience. It was too big for me. I value portability and mobility. I have a magic keyboard and an Apple pencil.

    6:45 iPadOS supports multiple windows. But apps-like Pages-have to support it. After opening Pages, tap the three-dot icon on the top of the screen, then tap new windows. To switch between windows, tap the three-dot icon and choose a window. You can also use the shortcut Global key + Down arrow key to show the windows of the current app. To close a window, just simply swipe it up (for trackpad, swipe up with two fingers). After you use Command + Tab to switch apps, the windows of that app will be shown for you to choose. Also, if you’re using a different app, you can secondary click on the app icon on the dock, then choose “Show All Windows”. This way, you can view the windows even if you’re using a different app.
    Other apps that support multiple windows are Safari, Files, Notes, etc.

    I've been a 12.9-inch user since the OG with the home button. When I was deep in the art world, it was a no-brainer -- I've used all the tools, and iPad, Procreate, and Apple Pencil were the best of the best. I swapped the OG 12.9 for a used 2018 12.9 and it served me well in the same context ... until my art work faded away. Video editing has always been my bread-and-butter (and I've never met a mac config I couldn't crash!) and essentially since the Apple silicon transition, I've just been chasing after more and more power. In *that* context, my iPads tended to collect dust on the shelf. FCP is my killer app, and my cash needs to go to powerful systems to support my workflows.
    That being said, all of your points ring true -- while there's a lot to hate about iPadOS, I've always loved the full-screen, mono-tasking approach to apps. The UI/UX is my ideal/fantasy computer interface (excluding the useless widgets). (Also: features debut on iPhone first, and then migrate to iPad -- the App Library is the perfect example of this! So I'd imagine lock screen customization might drop in the Fall.)
    Bringing *my* killer app to iPad changes my relationship with the device completely. I did the same thing you did and purchased the newest m2, but I'm holding off on the keyboard until I absolutely need it. I'm starting my audiobook projects on the iPad, and while I have to reprogram my brain to fit a different workflow, there's definitely a notable fun factor. I *feel* like certain things are moving faster on the iPad, but it could just be newness of the gadget and software ... but I'm enjoying it, having fun, and certainly appreciating not always having to work at my desk. And, samesies, now that the iPad is back in my regular day-to-day use, the other quality-of-life life improvements fall right into place!
    (Sidenote: I crashed FCP on the iPad on day 1. Pretty sure it was the waveforms scaling on a 20-30 minute audio clip. The whole iPad seized and I had to do a hard reboot. It's happened once more, but otherwise smooth. Maybe the new waveforms aren't as magical as they first looked?? LOL)

      Appreciate the detail of your own experience with iPad Pro. It's really my first foray into heavy iPad use despite owning two minis over the last 8+ yrs. The Magic Keyboard has helped me use it more since I'm so reliant on typing to feel that I can work at the speed of thought. Excited to see what other opportunities there are for me to use the iPad Pro more (Affinity Designer being one of them) and decide if the value it provides truly is worth the cost. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I used to feel there was absolutely no need for a touchscreen Mac - then I purchased an 11" M1 iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard for my daughter for school. Okay, part of my own gadget envy crept in there, though this was before the M1 iPad Air was released.
    After setting it up and using it for a while, I've turned a complete 180. Now I want either iPadOS to better support the apps/workflows that I use on my Mac, or a touchscreen on my MBP. (When using my MBP as a laptop, ie. on my lap, I find myself wanting to touch the screen. I've added a keyboard to my 10.5" iPad Pro now as well)
    I lean towards the former as with decent external display support I'd be more than happy to use an M-powered iPad Pro as my main machine plugged into my old Thunderbolt Display.
    Even though the 12.9" model has he better screen, I find with the Magic Keyboard that the 11" is a better trade off in weight and portability.
    Whilst I have purchased FCP on iPad (if only to support the platform for the moment) it would be still be a luxury purchase for myself. I'd probably opt for a refurb or pre-owned M1 in order to justify it!
    (Edit: so true about not feeling like 'working' when working on an iPad!)

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  Год назад +1

      I'm gonna be curious to see how I feel about it as I work with it more. Definitely have to force my brain to think in terms of touching the screen when I'm using it like it's a laptop. It's still not natural for me.
      And yes! I love when I'm working but it doesn't feel like work. Apple's definitely got that figured out. For better or worse... Hahaha

    An interesting take with the iPad Pro and just using the iPhone to shoot this video. I enjoyed the various footage. I would recommend perhaps adding a Røde Mic or external audio source to your vlogs. I think a whole video demonstrating taking various footage and editing on FCP for iPad would be really interesting. Did you upload the video directly from iPad to RUclips?

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  Год назад +2

      This video is actually a setup for an upcoming video where I show how much a RØDE Wireless Me can improve vlogging with the iPhone. They sent me a couple mics after meeting them at NAB, so I wanted to show viewers what to expect if you vlog with nothing more than your iPhone. Indoors isn't so bad but outside - yow.
      And I didn't upload to RUclips directly from FCP for iPad. I exported to a folder in the Files app and then AirDropped it to my Mac. It's a bit easier to deal with RUclips Studio through the website than the app. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Confused on what you mean by you cant open two different pages. I open multiple instances of word on my ipad and do split screen, or even stage manager with multiple windows.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  Год назад

      On a Mac you can have multiple windows open at the same time but layered on top of one another so that each window is taking up the entire display. You can use the keyboard shortcut Command + ` to cycle through the open windows _within_ an application. I'm not aware of how to do that in iPadOS. Sure you can split screen them, but I don't want two unrelated documents in split screen. I haven't tried Stage Manager to see how that approximates what I do on my Mac. I believe Stage Manager is a fancier version of the App Switcher where you can, ultimately, switch between open apps and the documents within them.

    I bought the M1 iPad Pro as my first device to use for photo and video editing in summer ‘21. The screen quality compared to the M1 MacBook Air/Pro was a major factor for me. Also, the touch interface and app experience is something I really prefer to a laptop. Last year I bought an M1 MacBook Pro 14” to finally start using Final Cut because I wanted the MotionVFX 3D plugins. I love being able to use those, but I am not a fan of MacOS. We’ll see where FCP on iPad goes with updates. I’m curious if I’ll ever want to ditch my MacBook.

Question; you have a lot of shorts for FCP and they all take full of keyboard commands. If you were not using the Magic Keyboard for FCP editing on the iPad, could you? Is it difficult to edit on iPad without the keyboard short cuts if you left the keyboard at home?

While editing this on the iPad Pro with FCP was delightful at times, there were certainly instances where it was excruciating (Audio Crossfades and copying and pasting my color grade to every single clip). I said in a post on Twitter that it probably took me 2x to 3x as long to edit this on the iPad compared to my Mac. But I will say it's awesome that I was able to.
