You're welcome! And I'm glad you're learning some new things about FCP. I'm hoping I can develop a course eventually that's tailored to both beginners and users who use FCP but just dove in and are getting by. It's a big undertaking, but I think it would be really helpful to a lot of editors!
@@matthewTobrien it would be crazy helpful. I think a lot of people are like myself, jump in, learn the basics, then just force our way through it always struggling. I’d grab your course if you did one.

Editing is my weakness, and this video was just what I needed today. I tried to use the audio match function in FCPX to sync dual system footage and sound. But I was covering a helicopter operation, so everything synced to the beat of the chopper, not the clean audio (dialog) from my audio recorder. This brief tutorial was perfect for my predicament, and offered a clear solution to clean up a real mess.
So glad to hear that, Danny! If I can, I always try to slate my videos so I can more easily manually sync. That's more and more a luxury these days as so many of us produce our content or create our client work on our own.
There is so much to remember Matthew and press simultaneously, just to do basic editing. As a music video editor that's my biggest problem with it. I think it is depends on the personality type and your powers of memory to be able to deal with it.
I agree, David. At first these modifiers and shortcuts feel like big obstacles, but if you endure some pain and friction early on and really focus on practicing them, they'll become second nature and you won't even know you're doing it. You can also add devices like a Loupedeck, Monogram Video Console, or a Stream Deck to your workflow to take the most commonly used complex shortcuts and make them a simple button push. I have both a Monogram Video Console and an iPad running Stream Deck Mobile so I never pop out of the creative flow while I'm editing.

Hi Matthew, I've been looking for a video like this for actually a few days now, thanks a lot for this, it's helping me wrap my head a bit around what video editing programs are like before buying one. Thank youuuu.
Matthew, you're a GOAT in your own lane dude. Love your workflow and I've learned a lot from you. Hopefully one of these days I'll be as smooth as you are using FCPX.
Just in time. Thank you. I've been practicing this week to get better with the MT. These are incredible tips. Even in my very limited knowledge of the MT, it's still the fastest way to edit for me. I used FCP7 and Premiere for a long time. The MT turned out to be my favorite surprise about using FCPX.
Mine too! Watch this vid from my friend Brad that covers pretty much every single tip you need to know to work *_with_* the Magnetic Timeline: ruclips.net/video/JonW5Zem3ZA/видео.html
I use the gap clip method when I’m experimenting. Q is one of my most used shortcuts because it’s a non destructive way to bring into timeline but I always bring it down to mag timeline to finish the edit.
I think it's a solid option for editors who are, in a sense, brainstorming with their initial steps in the build of an edit. And there's a cool visual layout element to it that makes it a little easier to see the edit just by looking at the timeline.
Excellent tut. I often do the gap clip method for initial rough cutting, then ‘tidy up’ into the mag tl at the appropriate time, but if it’s a quick job sometimes I don’t bother and leave it. Other times if it feels right I start right on the mag. Secondary tl’s are awesome, I like to use them for music and VO edits too.
That's certainly a productive way to do it, Bruce. I think that initial building phase really requires just getting stuff on a timeline. Even if it's super rough and a little disorganized. Start putting clips together and getting in the flow - you can always clean up during a break later. Thanks so much for watching!
A video idea that I have not seen yet, is a way to organize a Final Cut Pro project to edit a compilation referencing previous Final Cut Pro projects and media.
Impressive video. Subbed. I recently learned to shift what's on the magnetic timeline as I go thru different stages of the edit.👍It takes 10 seconds to bump tracks up and down and shift focus. I also recommend adding a slug at the start where you can connect a full length clip of audio you don't want to move, adjustment layers, guide layers. I started on FCP1😇I love FCPX. No more trauma. The house of cards no longer collapses. It gets up and walks out of the room🤣
Everyone does things differently, when I was looking at your timelines I was shocked to see you're using the VIDEO role for all your b-roll rather than a B-ROLL role. I use roles for every major type of content. VIDEO, B-ROLL, GFX, CREDITS, LAYERS (adjustment layers and catchall) plus DIALOGUE, MUSIC, EFFECTS Then if I wanna export a 'clean' version, audio only version, or just an a-roll I can, easy peasy!
I use b-roll roles for larger projects, especially my long-form documentary edits. I don't bother with my RUclips content because my workflow is so much simpler than with doc/long-form/client work. Roles are great, for sure, especially when you have a lot of different needs when exporting... RUclips is pretty straightforward though. Most of my roles for YT are on the audio side. MUSIC, VOICE OVER, SOUND FX, ATMOSPHERE, RISERS, etc. But very few of my YT vids have that level of sound design. Thanks for watching!
Super video. Additionally in the clip where he said he wouldn’t edit on a 13“ his dock is visible. I would. ALWAYS hide the dock because it gives you soooo much more screen real estate.
I _almost_ commented on that in the video but I thought it about from Marques's POV and figured it was a test or review unit and he and his team didn't bother to adjust the Dock settings while testing it. If he does leave the dock up, though... 😬
Those tips were awesome, I've only been using FCP for 3 years or so, but I learned one thing after another. Thanks so much! Can't wait to try the audio overlap shortcut...
This is what I'm talking about! Sometimes we gotta watch a few vids to help us see what we're missing out on. If you liked these tips, check out my buddy Brad's awesome video about the Magnetic Timeline: ruclips.net/video/JonW5Zem3ZA/видео.html
Finally. Yes, finally. I found someone actually talking about workflow. I've been look for weeks, even taking entire courses. And after a few videos from you, I actually worked out a workflow I like and is quick for short film projects. Thank you for the content. This has been a life saver.
i make music videos and when i edit i put the song in the mag timeline instead of a gap or the clips, and how i get around having a chaotic timeline is usually by creating compound clips. i feel like there are many ways to use the program and depending on the type of video you are editing it can differ so it can be of use to know all your options. learned some new things from this video but i do agree for what marquis is editing he should convert to your method
Yes! Song in the Primary Storyline! I did that all the time when I was editing concert video content for live touring - a great way to make the music the foundation of your edit. So glad you learned a few new tricks... Stay tuned for my next one where I take a look at iJustine's FCP workflow - hoping you all learn a few more tricks!
Thank you very much for this video! This has changed my approach to the magnetic timeline and I think I finally understood a couple of tricks. Thank you so much!
You're welcome! To learn even more, check out my buddy Brad's video all about unlocking the Magnetic Timeline - it's 🤯 ruclips.net/video/JonW5Zem3ZA/видео.html
Given I only just started editing and am using FCPX, I don't know any different I guess but I still found this video really helpful and learned a few new things! I love how easy FCPX is to learn and use and how many great tutorials there are out there from people like you, thanks!
I like some aspects of the magnetic timeline, it in 5:16 you did exactly what I hate about it. You trimmed a clip and it moved everything on the timeline.
It didn’t though! (as long as I’m thinking of the same part) Everything in the Primary Storyline stayed the same but it looks like it moved because it was all moving in relationship to the trim I did to the clip in the Secondary Storyline. Trust me - it doesn’t mess everything up when you do it correctly. I actually had a segment right after that trim explaining how it looks like it’s moving things in the Primary Storyline (but I cut it for time) - doing something destructive - but it isn’t.
You just saved Marques about 10 hours a week (if he watches this and takes note) - the magnetic timeline is the key to faster editing. Knowing how to use it and how to break it is the gateway to all sorts of radical problem solving.
I learned how to edit using the Magnetic Timeline that you go over here. I had no idea people were using the gap clip method 🤯. Definitely seems like more work.
The Gap Clip method is pretty pervasive. It's one thing for someone who knows the Magnetic Timeline inside and out to use that method in specific situations...it's another when someone's using it to avoid the Magnetic Timeline because they haven't been able to figure it out. I use the Gap Clip method - in a sense - when I edit strictly to music (I put the music track in the Primary Storyline)...
Thanks for another bunch of FCP tips that are game-changers for me, Matthew - really appreciate it. At the end of this video you pitch some plug-ins, which got me thinking. As a rookie FCP jockey I've drunk the Kool-Aid and purchased several highly recommended plug-in packages, such as Motion Pop, mTracker, Pixel Film Studios. But I have to say I've not had much luck getting them to work correctly. And it doesn't seem to me that these companies provide support/help aimed at new video editors either, over the phone, via email or in their support docs and vids. Since you're so good at explaining things, I'd like to ask if maybe you could someday do a video on reasons plug-ins don't work as promised, need constant updating, crash FCP, etc.? Thanks again!!
Sorry to hear you're having issues with your plug-ins. I'd be frustrated about that too. Definitely a good idea regarding a video summing all that up. That's part of why I like motionVFX so much - their mInstaller app allows you to install, un-install, repair, and update. One of their plug-ins was showing up all red for me last week so I went to mInstaller and clicked on "Repair Install" and it worked perfectly after that. Great idea!
Hi Matthew really enjoying your vids! Thank you. Quick question, the yellow/ glitchy chapter titles, did you make those with the mTutorial plugin or is it something else?
Excellent advice on secondary timelines, Matthew. That will definitely help with workflow efficiency. Also will definitely try out the range tool more often for cutting clips. Also, LOVE the override connections modifier tip!
Thank you for another great video! You definitely got a new subscriber and you should have many more. After 10 years not editing, I am getting back to it. And this is the type of video that I need to watch to not take bad habits and have a good workflow. I really need to find what is the equivalent for European Keyboard of Opt bracket (. I have tried to find it in the Command Shortcuts. Will ask the Apple Community!
Thanks Matthew... if what you know about FXP is expressed as 100%... I'm about 3%... good news is I've learned on the magnetic timeline so it's all I know... Now I live for shortcuts and tips :)
Great job Matt! I can't imagine editing without the Magnetic Timeline, it's all I know, [CMD]+[Option] =Click is a one I didn't know. Thanks for sharing.
He didn't say Marques is wrong, the title is followed by a question mark. But this is just one of the methods to engage more people here on RUclips with a good hook title and thumbnail.
@@matthewTobrien it’s pretty easy for me. I used it for one of recent uploads yesterday. My work flow is a lot faster now also I’m working off of a 2012 MacBook 🤣 I’m getting an m1 this week though
That's the best way to do it! Although remember it's Command + OPTION + ⬇︎ ... not Command + SHIFT + ⬇︎ to drop clips down to the "track" below. I goofed in the vid. 🤦🏻♂️
I record narration and create documentary style work. Gap clips means I can trim and make j cuts from the audio but the transitions can’t be as long. It’s not optimal but when you cut an audio clip and delete it creates the gap anyhow.
Fun video to watch. I use the destructive method mentioned. On a different note. Why does RUclips give me a banner ad right in the middle of your video? I vowed to never buy anything from any advertiser who would put an ad across my screen as I'm watching. I've kept my promise. tHanks for the video....loads of points to contemplate.
I have all ads enabled for my videos and some of them are banner ads. Frustrating, I know as a viewer. I would always click them away instantly before I upgradedto RUclips Premium.
Awesome! Thanks bro. Btw, what would you recommend is the most efficient way of slip editing audio of the next clip in the timeline to fade in before current/prior one ends for nature/hiking videos beside Option T for the audio crossfade?
What sets Final cut pro apart is the magnetic timeline. I cant believe Marques would disable the magnetic timeline by putting a big gap clip in the main timeline. But if it works for him, it works for him. But he can improve and change for the better. I never had a problem with the magnetic timeline. Perhaps because FCP is my first editing software.
It's possible, too, Ophelia that you are just of the mindset to power through obstacles by understanding the nature of them (not saying MKBHD doesn't). I would often say to myself, "Apple designed it this way. I'm frustrated because I'm not using it correctly. What do I need to learn to use it correctly?" And I took the time to only commiserate with one of my best friends who also edits...I read all the Apple Support articles and the entire list of Keyboard Shortcuts to try to unlock what I was missing. Not patting myself on the back, but this is the kind of effort required to learn something as it was designed and intended to be used. But Pollock didn't use paintbrushes and paint the way the old masters would have taught and look what he made. Sometimes doing it your own way is the only way to get your amazing art and creativity out there.
Excellent question! It's super easy - check out this article in the Final Cut Pro Guide: support.apple.com/guide/final-cut-pro/adjust-timeline-clip-appearance-verb8e5d346/mac
Thanks again for another awesome video! My first foray into video editing was with music videos, and in those cases I don't use the magnetic timeline at all because the timing is already predetermined by the music, but when I started doing other videos that required timing edits holy smokes was the magnetic timeline a godsend. I couldn't imagine not having it. I do however still end up with stacks and stacks of clips, but that's mostly because I'm abusing Final Cut and making it do things that I should probably be using Motion or After Effects for, heh. I'm currently learning After Effects so that I can stop abuse FCPX.
Yup, I throw the music or score into the Primary Storyline and edit my video clips above the music. I still use Secondary Storylines extensively to get the benefits of the Magnetic Timeline with those clusters of clips, but of course there are rogue clips that aren't in a Secondary Storyline as well. Glad you're enjoying FCP, Greg!
I've wanted to make this video myself for a while for Marques. I remember him saying he switched from Premier when he saw how quick another FCP editor could work/export. I think it's likely a case of not having been shown simple tricks like the tilde key, moving the clip connection, and the P key - and he'd be saving himself a lot of clicks - ultimately he tells a great story, but just thinking of how much time he'd get back and enjoy the editing process more! I used to have taller timelines until another editor friend told me to clean up! Just trimming a few frames of overlapping clips really helps condense clips. Really interesting use of the multi-cam to do cropped cuts, I've been manually doing crops on the timeline. ALSO - is that a blue mouse or rat on your wall?
All excellent points, Ben, and I hadn't heard that Marques came over from Premiere. I sort of assumed he went from iMovie up to Final Cut Pro. Not a blue mouse or a rat! It's a cat my daughter drew and it really, really spoke to me. I mean, I know a lot of parents like to treat their kids' "art" like it belongs in an art gallery...but this little blue cat with its eyes and little red paws really, really spoke to me. I'll send a pic on Discord. :)
Agreed, the magnetic timeline is the fastest way to edit a-roll interviews and talkies. But the MT is also the biggest obstacle in learning FCP! You must embrace the use of shortcut to become an effective editor in FCP. I would be curious as to why MKB uses this method to edit. Did he start in a track based editing program before becoming a FCPX user? Or possibly that's the way someone showed him the first time?
That is an excellent question. I'm thinking he's self-taught and probably started with iMovie and then moved up to FCP - you just learn one way of doing something and it's really hard to stop that completely and do it entirely different. Unlearning what you have learned is tough for anybody. Me included!

Sounds like you've got a solid workflow, Brad!
Matthew "I'm not here to say Marques is doing it wrong"
Matthew's Title: "lolol I'm totally saying that."
Love that magnetic timeline
Wow my mind is blown - I'll have to come back and rewatch this a few times to drill these techniques into my head! Thanks for the video!
Yes, please rewatch! Haha. But yes, the hardest part is committing to a new way of working, but when you do and it becomes second nature it's great!
Wow, so informative, to the point, professional. Subscribed. Thank you!
Awesome! Welcome to the channel!
I thank you very much for this valuable material! Very useful for a beginner in learning Final Cut Pro!
Great video. I appreciate your clarity.
My pleasure, Eddie! Thanks so much for watching!
honestly magnetic timeline saved me so much braincells while editing, it's a great feature once you get used to it
I _could not_ agree more.
That's why I love my iMovie editor. Straight forward and workably simple but effective.
Can't go wrong with simple and effective.
@@matthewTobrien But yeah I know I have to step up - Final Cut Pro .
Finally. Yes, finally. I found someone actually talking about workflow. I've been look for weeks, even taking entire courses. And after a few videos from you, I actually worked out a workflow I like and is quick for short film projects. Thank you for the content. This has been a life saver.
So glad to hear that! I do love to chat about workflows - it's the Post-Production Supervisor in me. :)
thanks again for your excellent tips and instructions on how to use them!!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching and commenting!
i make music videos and when i edit i put the song in the mag timeline instead of a gap or the clips, and how i get around having a chaotic timeline is usually by creating compound clips. i feel like there are many ways to use the program and depending on the type of video you are editing it can differ so it can be of use to know all your options. learned some new things from this video but i do agree for what marquis is editing he should convert to your method
Several solid tips right here! 🤜🏼💥🤛🏼
Thanks, Michael!
Great tips, will help with some workflow issues I have had with FCPX
So great to hear that!
this video is pure gold!!! thank you!
Love to hear that, Enrique! Thank you so much for watching!
Given I only just started editing and am using FCPX, I don't know any different I guess but I still found this video really helpful and learned a few new things! I love how easy FCPX is to learn and use and how many great tutorials there are out there from people like you, thanks!
So great to hear this!
Amazing info! Thank you for creating this video!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Praying Marques sees and appreciates this. We can all learn from others, and this will really help others edit in fcpx better :)
That's the hope - keep moving everyone who edits with FCP toward mastery.
Your videos are always very informative
Thanks, Conor! Hope you learned some new tricks!
You just saved Marques about 10 hours a week (if he watches this and takes note)
- the magnetic timeline is the key to faster editing. Knowing how to use it and how to break it is the gateway to all sorts of radical problem solving.
That's the hope! Save time (which is INCREDIBLY limited for all of us, right!?!) and get those workflows lean and mean. Appreciate you watching!
Love this video and all the others! You’ve become my go to guy to better my FCP experience. Thanks!
Appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
I liked the vid for the Star Wars reference
I mean, do we need any other reason! Hopefully you were able to, ahem, _slowly digest_ this vid... #GreatPitofCarkoon
Very well explained

You're absolutely welcome, Houston! Thanks for watching!
Thanks! Great tips, Matthew! Just in time for some editing I am doing!
Martin! Thanks for the Super Thanks, friend! Feel like I haven't seen you in a while! Gotta chop that broccoli - get after it! 🔪🥦
Great idea!
@@matthewTobrien thanks a lot, Matthew, I'll see if I have access to a repair utility with these plug-ins I have, appreciate the tip!
Hi Matthew really enjoying your vids! Thank you. Quick question, the yellow/ glitchy chapter titles, did you make those with the mTutorial plugin or is it something else?
Those are with motionVFX's mFilmMatte plug-in: $89 | Save 10% - MIDLAND | geni.us/mFilmmatte
Thanks, Matthew - love your videos, you deserve far more subscribers and views.
Appreciate that, Rob! Keep sharing the channel and we'll get there!
just get up, drank a coffee and learn something more about fcpx.you made my day. be blessed my friend.. thx so much❤️🤝🙏👏😀
So great to hear that! Thanks so much for watching!
Excellent advice on secondary timelines, Matthew. That will definitely help with workflow efficiency. Also will definitely try out the range tool more often for cutting clips. Also, LOVE the override connections modifier tip!
Yeah, the Range Tool to cut out chunks of a-roll is great. And I love the grave key modifier!
Learned a lot from this, thank you!
Excellent! Thanks so much for watching!
I replied to one of your other comments about the Option + [ shortcuts. You still weren't able to find it? :(
I edit very much like you, but I learned a few things for sure thank you.
Great to hear, Paul! Thanks for watching!
You're amazing! Thank you.
Awwww shucks....
Thanks Matthew... if what you know about FXP is expressed as 100%... I'm about 3%... good news is I've learned on the magnetic timeline so it's all I know... Now I live for shortcuts and tips :)

Excellent job! And, you're fearless!
Gotta be - this Final Cut Pro / RUclips world is ruthless! 🤣
Great video!

Haha too funny. “Layla…” 🎸
Great job Matt! I can't imagine editing without the Magnetic Timeline, it's all I know, [CMD]+[Option] =Click is a one I didn't know. Thanks for sharing.

These new amazing tips, thank you.
"I don't wanna say Marques is wrong"
*proceeds to tell him he's wrong in the title*
Hey, there’s a question mark on the thumb and in the title. It’s like Anchorman: “I’m Ron Burgundy…?”
He didn't say Marques is wrong, the title is followed by a question mark. But this is just one of the methods to engage more people here on RUclips with a good hook title and thumbnail.
What a fun and awesome video. Thanks Matthew.
Thanks, Steven!
Great tips bro! I’m def gonna use them next time I’m editing
Awesome! It can tough to implement those changes but stick with them until their 2nd nature.
@@matthewTobrien it’s pretty easy for me. I used it for one of recent uploads yesterday.
My work flow is a lot faster now also I’m working off of a 2012 MacBook 🤣
I’m getting an m1 this week though
Congrats on the M1! You're going to love it.
Thanks for the video. Great tips!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this ...I had to pick my mac book and practise with you
That's the best way to do it!
I've used gap clips when laying down a voice over and they've been incredibly helpful. Agree about transitions though.
@@matthewTobrien I question why banner ads exist. It makes RUclips look desperate, like a beggar.
This is gold.
That's what I'm talking about! 🥇
Awesome!
How did you change the clip height? That seems really useful.
Excellent question! It's super easy - check out this article in the Final Cut Pro Guide: support.apple.com/guide/final-cut-pro/adjust-timeline-clip-appearance-verb8e5d346/mac
Great, short, to the point.
Haha - I don't know how to the point I am. 🤣 I tend to go on...and on...and on........
@@matthewTobrien I watched on 2x speed and it was a perfect experience
Awesome! Nice tips, thanks
Thanks, Roy! Thanks for watching!
I learned a lot thank you.
You're welcome - thanks for watching!
Love the video! Great job on this!
True, he's using Final Cut and his cameras wrong - he's using 30FPS instead of 24.
Haha - I'm definitely in the 24 fps club.
@@matthewTobrien yes Marques mentioned it in one of his vids once
I highly doubt MKB edits his own videos 😂😂
