indeed. I have a MBP intel that is 3 years old and works great (and a MacStudio M2) not gonna upgrade for while. Matt is 100% right: the subscription Apple wants is for the hardware. no thanks
Great analysis! I’m glad you did this instead of the run-of-the-mill rundown on new features like everybody else is done. I waited 10 years to upgrade from FCP7 to FCPX and I’m still amazed at the features I wish that FCP 10 had from the legacy software.
You’re absolutely right. My entire feed, whether on Instagram or here on RUclips, is full of content creators who are hyping up the update and showcasing each feature as if it’s the new holy grail. But you’re completely correct: these updates are cool and certainly practical, but they definitely don’t justify a Final Cut Pro 11 update. It would have been great for Final Cut X, but to claim “here’s Final Cut Pro 11” is definitely not enough. These are all nice quality-of-life improvements but definitely not a big leap forward. Thanks for your videos-they’re as cool as ever. Greetings from Germany.
I do love this update, particularly thec magnetic mask, but animated captions like CapCut is a must at this point. Let’s hope they update it soon to add animated captions. I’m sure we would all love to see text based editing as well.
Final Cut Pro 11 was released on my birthday who would’ve thought it. I will never forget this birthday as a content creator which I’m close to being able to officially say that I am again as I was just gifted a year worth of Ecamm today so now I just have to hope that I can get it to run well enough on my Intel iMac until I get my upgrade too Apple Silicon. Great thoughts on all of this man! Good to see you again as always!
Good move, especially since Davinci just misstepped and made scripts a Studio only thing. Not enough to beat or catch up to other editors, but the fact they did a major update is a massive light at the end of the tunnel so to speak
Final Cut Pro 11's Transcribe to Captions feature could be promising. I work for a city fire department and the new federal requirements for ADA compliance will require all videos to have captioning available. It would be awesome if the captions can be exported as a separate file to deliver for television broadcasts and RUclips's closed captioning.

On the nose! the subscription is with the hardware. It's hard to fanboy on this update. It's not a spoiled response to ask for the things we actually need, them saying we hear you, then updating things we didn't ask for really. FCP has a good chance to take over CapCut and filmora. But not pulling people away from Davinci Resolve. As always a great thoughtful video Matthew! Magnetic Mask is cool and welcome, but that’s really it? More of a plugin update. Magneticmask is next gen. It is much more accurate than Magic Mask from Davinci. It captures hair so well. I am sure the future AI features coming will take FCP11 to the top.
That FCP studio line cuts. Some of us are old enough to remember the morning of waking up to FCPX. Slow walking is the Apple approach now. (AI for example) Apple seems content to let potential users find applications that do all of the things (or all of the things they need) before Apple itself implements those things into its own applications. This was awesome in 2001-2010. Besides the fact that there wasn't a lot of affordable NLEs, FCP Studio was a wonderful set of tools. I remember feeling like a rebel with a new software that was changing the industry. The market now doesn't have 10% of the loyalty they did before. They go to where the features are. Now some goodwill has been brokered but Apple is going to where the puck is. Gretzky wouldn't approve. As someone who uses different NLEs for different things (FCP, CapCut, Resolve) If I were forced to drop one of these for use case, it would be FCP as of now. There are just not enough useful/unique features to set it apart. Hopefully they don't take the 5 years to try to gain paraity because I can guarantee, That isn't where the others will be 5 years on. Cheers on the video as always!
I'm very excited for this new update. But I'm also disappointed that full transcription and text-based editing is still not included. It just seems so long overdue at this point. It's weird to me that we can auto-transcribe to create captions, but NOT to just transcribe an interview. Fortunately, I've implemented Builder NLE to fill this gap. And it works really well (highly recommend), but it just seems odd to me that FCP can't just do it on its own. Great video!
I thought the caption thing was finally going to be like Premiere or Capcut (!!) but no, you still can't change the font of the captions, just the formatting. What's even the point?
I started on Sony Vegas Studios, and learned FCP when I switched to Mac. It serves its purpose for my simple editing, but I hate to see it stagnate. I am glad they released 11.
Thank you Matt for another solid honest video. I couldn't agree more, as a Final Cut Pro fan from day 1, I am still so frustrated that Apple make the hardware, the OS and the software yet they feel like they continually handicapping themselves when in reality they should be the furtherest along in terms of features and integration. Just look at the Apple Silicon team and the M4/Pro/Max launch, they are staying on the cutting edge of what can be done in the chip world, why cant the FCP team be doing the same. Another frustration is the guys down the hall in the Logic office are pumping out meaningful large updates that are staying with professional high end TV, Broadcast and film industry trends and workflows, yet the FCP guys seem to not even be invested in their own software they create. Around 5 years ago Apple setup and employed a bunch of people called the Pro Workflow team.... what happened to these guys? You can't tell me all of them were perfectly happy with where FCP was and the pace at which it was being updated. Unfortunately FCP 11, continues to play catchup in an environment where it should be hands down the leader.... rant over... just disappointed 😔
Let's keep an eye on FCP and Apple's continued progress in allocating resources to it. Just the fact that they made an iPad app, a camera app and they're partnering with RUclipsrs to promote new FCP releases is HUGE. I think there's plenty more to come but, of course, never fast enough. Thanks for watching!
Yes, it’s an app you install through the App Store app on Mac, and it’s $299 USD. Here’s a support article from Apple about how to redeem their gift cards: support.apple.com/en-us/118242#:~:text=On%20your%20Mac%2C%20open%20the,in%20to%20your%20Apple%20Account.

And, I'm not being negative toward anyone.....but ALL RUclipsrs except you are raving about every release as if it's the Holy Grail. Thrilled for every update, but it's still not enough. And I'm 100% FCPX and staying. (RUclipsrs are afraid to lose access to Apple)
FCP is the most intuitive and fastest NLE, but it simply still lags (far) behind Resolve (and even Adobe) for advanced audio, vfx, color, and collaborative workflows. This update feels like a student turning in their senior thesis project two months too late.
Simple economics: since they aren't charging much for it, they aren't allocating that many developer resources to it = slow updates, lack of features, minimal marketing, etc. I hate to say it, but maybe the non-subscription price is their achilles heel
The auto caption is a real bummer to be honest... you analogy was right on point, I have made the switch to Resolve this summer I hope apple keep updating it to be able to keep up with the other NLE
You're video is spot on. To be honest, I've been considering switching to DaVinci Resolve or Premier Pro for a long time. This update looks great, but there are much more things needed to be done with FCPX in order to fit it to the world of 2024. On example: What about a proper support to QNAP network servers?
100% with you, CapCut does the caption so well, with templates that are just perfect on the go, on top of that they have text based editing which is huge!, this update is cool but definitely not enough
I would love to have is text based editing, be able to search clips like blue car so AI analyzer for videos or audio like imagine one hour video search that specific clip :/
This is my main argument for a subscription. It would still be very cheap and at the same time have a strong incentivized to the developers to keep adding new features. We all love FCPX but we need a strong sense of assurance that apple is going to keep up with it. I love the new features of FCP11 but it's just that, a start.
I was considering switching to DaVinci Resolve, but the release of FCP 11 has made me rethink. Although Apple’s updates for FCP have been slow, this new version is a big leap forward and keeps FCP relevant for now. However, if the gap between FCP and DaVinci Resolve continues to grow, I might eventually switch.
The auto caption limitation makes no sense. It doesn't take a software engineering genius to create a dropdown sub menu option to output auto caption results into title objects instead of caption objects for insertion on the timeline. The magnetic mask is awesome to have but for whatever reason it still looks like what a mockup of the development of such a feature would look like, especially with the weird bugs around the mask color showing or not showing. No apple polish for that headline feature I guess... I just feel like Apple is sitting on an editing revolution if they could integrate Apple Intelligence into FC and gives us text based editing and workflow improvements. "Siri, change all Font size to 125 for all Essential Title fonts on the timeline...OK, done!" "Siri, remove all talking head pauses on selected clip and append to timeline...OK, done!" "Siri, edit multicam angles to person currently talking with a delay of 3 seconds...ok, Done!
I'm new to FCP and Im tryin to create a template for my videos such as, music, subscribe, intro, and outro , so that I wont have to manually do it on every video. Can you assist me?
I don’t feel like this was enough for a version change. A decent point update for sure, but that’s all. And I note Motion not changed, which is a shame as I’d like to see magnetic mask brought over there too.
For me Titles is not important, but subtitles for many languages is and with an editable database of correct words is. I do daily translations into 25+ languages with many dedicated words that do not exist in Apple’s database.
I just hope that they actually maintain future updates. They take so long to fix critical bugs and they shroud everything in secrecy. I don’t think this will change (the critical updates part anyway) but I hope I’m proven wrong.
nice to see the improved communication from apple via fcp alone videos , and doing the meet up day in fcp summit and tru the youtubers friends to relese the review right at the update time ( no need to go and look if is there an update
Agree that Apple makes its FCP revenue from hardware sales. There's no point in slugging someone $20 (?) a month (it would need to be much less than Adobe CC) when a working editor will drop $4k every couple of years on MBP/Mac Studio and additional hardware.
I'm sorry, but Final Cut Pro has been the most frustrating software I've ever used. One major issue is that you can't copy and paste color correction settings without disrupting the original color values of a clip. For instance, if a clip has a saturation value of 10 and you paste a saturation setting from another clip with a value of 5, you'd expect the result to be 5. But instead, the values add together, resulting in a saturation of 15. This additive behavior makes it incredibly difficult to achieve consistent color correction across clips.
I switch to CapCut about a year ago and now my 1 year subscription is coming due....Not sure what to do.....Why is Apple taking sooooooooooo long. (Hey apple I've been a FCP user for over 15 years)
You were right. It's called "11". But am I alone in thinking this is just "10.9"? When they go up a full version, I'm expecting screaming, crying editors at tha NAB show, like in 2011. Transcription doesn't even make titles? Spatial video? What is this? Magic Mask will be very cool IF it works. Your thoughts? Want this moment again: ruclips.net/video/qOGWxd8c4Ng/видео.htmlsi=_1Kit2-KU57Ya757&t=1372
Now that it’s out there will be a lot of details to come over - stuff that even my friend’s who got it early didn’t uncover. I think it’s worthy of “11” but the bigger reason they did it was to end all concerns about their commitment to the app.
Had to switch to DaVinci for a big project, just made more sense than spending hundreds on plugins for FCP to try to get near the level of features I ended up using in that project. And it's nice to see the new FCP features, but it feels like DaVinci is just making big helpful moves, like the 19.1 release is arguably bigger than the FCP 11 release, and so at this point, I don't feel like switching back, and the new update seems kind of underwhelming but if they end up opening up betas and could maybe catch up in the next years with all the AI stuff, I'd definitely consider it
The features I expected are not there. 📍There is no advanced keyframe (curve). 📍There is no option to lock and anchor video roles. 📍The outline on text still looks terrible.
The lack of an integrated AI analysis tool in this full 11.0 version update is a HUGE miss and my biggest disappointment. The other "magic" wishes I can live without, but this is the single must-have feature in 2024 that will make any NLE that has it a game-changing asset for its efficiency increase. Without it, you are going to lose work to editor's leveraging said AI analysis capacity using other NLEs. "Hey Siri-find me that perfect soundbyte about a needle in a haystack." ... "Here is a list of farm-friendly sewing websites " 🤦🏽♂
Agreed, Peter! You gotta try Jumper in the meantime: getjumper.io I still need to run it on a few edits, but everything I’m hearing is that it does an incredible job of enhancing search in FCP’s Browser. Thanks for watching and commenting!
The problem is that Modern Apple does not understand the Halo effect. FCP is fundamental, the moment it disappears (and they were letting it die) RUclipsrs are going to drop the Macs. I am sure, from the cost-center point of view, FCP is a massive money loser for Apple. Remember that they used Resolve to showcase the Power of the M2 generation with no mention of FCP. The best that could happen to FPC is a subscription, if possible via the Studio you are talking about but I don't see Apple investing 100 million dollars in what they see as a dead end.
still no keyframe control worth the name, no native adjustment layer, still no proper pipeline with motion and the audio is still on a par with my original iPod! Nice, but it aint a v11
No multi-user collaboration? No batch audio sync? No keyframe editor? No transcription-based editing? No captions to titles? This is an underwhelming updated due 5 years ago. None of these features will make the art of editing faster and better. I’m so disappointed.

The auto caption is a real bummer to be honest... you analogy was right on point, I have made the switch to Resolve this summer I hope apple keep updating it to be able to keep up with the other NLE
Yup, me too.
You're video is spot on. To be honest, I've been considering switching to DaVinci Resolve or Premier Pro for a long time. This update looks great, but there are much more things needed to be done with FCPX in order to fit it to the world of 2024.
On example: What about a proper support to QNAP network servers?
100% with you, CapCut does the caption so well, with templates that are just perfect on the go, on top of that they have text based editing which is huge!, this update is cool but definitely not enough
also mCaptions do the work
I would love to have is text based editing, be able to search clips like blue car so AI analyzer for videos or audio like imagine one hour video search that specific clip :/
ME TOO! Hopefully 11.1!
@ thanks for your video 🙌
Maybe it should be a subscription. Maybe then they would prioritize it and add real features at a MUCH faster pace.
I guess that’s possible and it certainly seems to be one of the “pros” for subscriptions in general.
What happend to the camera stabilization ? I don’t find the button anymore
"Siri, change all Font size to 125 for all Essential Title fonts on the timeline...OK, done!"
"Siri, remove all talking head pauses on selected clip and append to timeline...OK, done!"
"Siri, edit multicam angles to person currently talking with a delay of 3 seconds...ok, Done!
Yes! Bring on those features that feel like magic!
We don't need a new Final Cut, we need a new Steve.
Now that’s interesting… 🤔
The did that with the first FCP Studio . . . so I had to buy it all over again as FCP.
I'm new to FCP and Im tryin to create a template for my videos such as, music, subscribe, intro, and outro , so that I wont have to manually do it on every video. Can you assist me?
I don’t see the update I have a M2 Ultra 😢 am I not compatible?
I don’t feel like this was enough for a version change. A decent point update for sure, but that’s all. And I note Motion not changed, which is a shame as I’d like to see magnetic mask brought over there too.
I'm really disappointed with the captions, so I'll keep using CapCut for that. But I'm super excited about the magnetic mask
It’s a step in the right direction and hopefully 11.1 adds automatic title captions. I’m sure it will come soon.
Do you have to pay for the upgrade?
Nope! It’s free if you already purchased Final Cut Pro 😎
For me Titles is not important, but subtitles for many languages is and with an editable database of correct words is. I do daily translations into 25+ languages with many dedicated words that do not exist in Apple’s database.
But still considering, why fcp is better than capcut?
Fcp is the step child n resolve is the good kid for Apple.
WE AGREE WITH YOU
I’M GLAD!
Agreed!
(Hey apple I've been a FCP user for over 15 years)
Well, 10→11, but I think this is still a small update. I think fcp should be rewritten in the underlying structure.
@@matthewTobrien That is a good thing, yes. See? I'm slightly calmer now ha ha🤪.
Had to switch to DaVinci for a big project, just made more sense than spending hundreds on plugins for FCP to try to get near the level of features I ended up using in that project. And it's nice to see the new FCP features, but it feels like DaVinci is just making big helpful moves, like the 19.1 release is arguably bigger than the FCP 11 release, and so at this point, I don't feel like switching back, and the new update seems kind of underwhelming but if they end up opening up betas and could maybe catch up in the next years with all the AI stuff, I'd definitely consider it
A potential Switcher Backer!
The features I expected are not there.
📍There is no advanced keyframe (curve).
📍There is no option to lock and anchor video roles.
📍The outline on text still looks terrible.
wait really? lol thought it was click bait - im scared to update haha
I've said it before and I'll keep saying it until it happens. Apple should just buy motionVFX and integrate every plugin natively
That would be interesting…
This actually would be great…
That's a great idea, motionvfx team is awesome and it would integrate nicely into a the fcpx cam app to combat things like cap cut, etc
Apple makes money selling content, more than selling products that make content.
You gotta try Jumper in the meantime: getjumper.io
I still need to run it on a few edits, but everything I’m hearing is that it does an incredible job of enhancing search in FCP’s Browser. Thanks for watching and commenting!
the spoiled brat is me
Oh I know 😎🤣
🥦🥦,🥦!
YEAH… BUT… they put “show horizon” on shortcuts so like, in we’ll happy. 😂😂😂 woo. Change my daily Brockley cutting.
If They Ever Add Subscription to FCP Desktop, they lose to Davinci Resolve Immediately. PERIOD!
They won’t.
Apple Pro Apps team not showing any vision. Just some features from other NLEs done properly.
Not leading. Not inspiring.
Lol all of this to say....Apple honestly doesn't care about the user anymore.
First 🎉
Nice!
I strongly disagree. Apple is greedier than Adobe! They WILL go to subscription for sure
Meaningless video....
Time is a flat circle.
Capcut is taking a Crap all over Final cut!!!! Their team is literally laughing so hard theyre rolling on the floor!
I still haven’t used CapCut, but I hear its users really enjoy it.
