I know it's a lot simpler, but I've been really happy with my personal family photos when I edit them just in Photos. A lot of the options Aperture has are in the Photos app, (not everything but a lot) and since it's the photos app it integrates with everything else really well. Amazing catalog, and powerful too.
I use it for everything but my film scans. At 118MB for each image, I don’t want to burden iCloud with that kind of storage demand. And I don’t need the RAW images to sync to iCloud. Just the final exports. Which I’ll of course import into the Photos app.
@@matthewTobrien Yah I think I made this comment before I saw the uncompressed TIFF files in play. Have you looked into DarkTable at all? Open source, free and supports TIFF Files. I think it even includes negative processing tools, something called negadoctor, great for processing scans.
Great video Matthew! Very nice to see Aperture back in action! I think you need the Marty’s Delorean!😂 Otherwise, I still have a subscription to Adobe for After Effects because I need it in my work. On the other hand, I replaced Photoshop with Affinity Photo and Lightroom with DXO Photolab. For video editing, it’s obviously FCP since 1999! Concerning the dust in the studio, don’t worry, you’re not the only one, this damn dust drives me crazy! I like my equipment to stay clean. Have a nice day!😉
That’s pretty much what I have been doing with a spare MacBook Air since 2014. Although I have migrated to C1, I still use Aperture 3.6.1 (with help from the Retroactive patch) to manage my edited images and their metadata. Additionally, I use the Light Table feature for brainstorming montage ideas. Even now, 10 years later, I still haven’t found a comparable photo editor/manager that could deal with metadata as extensively and flexibly as Aperture, never mind the unique (amongst photo editing/management software) Light Table feature. Although long ‘dead’ Aperture is still light years ahead of others in these aspects.
Have and still use a Thunderbolt Display which is 12 years old now. Use it with an adapter and my M1 Pro 14 inch MacBook Pro. Sure the resolution isn’t retina, but it still goes strong.
I have Aperture on my 27 in Mac (2012 v) and refuse to update my computer , because the new versions do not support Aperture. What a shame....I love using Aperture.
Glad I’m not the only crazy one, the same Mac Pro is dual boot to Sonoma via opcl and mavericks just to be able to edit my mid 2000 Dsrl photos ….i missed aperture a lot but funny thing is Photomator is becoming what aperture should be
Holy moly 100 bucks for a thunderbolt display is a steal! I'd have 6 of them but the prices in Germany are pure insanity. Man, I miss Aperture. I see why they dropped it, but still... melts my heart seeing this user interface. I mean, I switched to Capture One but have yet to make myself a home there. Great video, Matthew! :)
Pretty great deal, right! That makes my 3rd Thunderbolt Display in my studio... And I have a feeling Aperture is going to be the perfect solution for my unique needs. Can't wait to get it everything imported, organized and edited!
Hey, Matthew! Great tutorial. I just threw away my copy of Aperture 3, and unlike you my oldest iMac is a 2017. Our two older iMacs (2010ish) have failed mechanically, and I've been using Adobe Lightroom Classic successfully since Aperture 3 was abandoned by Apple. I did buy the Affinity Suite when they had it at 1/2 the price recently, but haven't cracked open those apps yet. Keep up the great work. You look fabulous… like an artist! Love to mom and the family!
Thanks for tuning in, Ivor! I’m glad I kept my 2013 Mac Pro around, and even happier that I had it in my purchase history. That saved me from having to install an older version of macOS. Get those Affinity apps going - they’re excellent. But with how long you’ve been using Adobe products I know that’s gotta be tough.
That green light on the right side of your display, does that go away when you move your screen in the opposite direction? I'm thinking maybe some strong magnetic field could be causing that - like that of a loudspeaker, or similar, and your display may actually be fine.
I enjoyed your video. It’s good exploring these old apps and getting them to work in 2024. Meanwhile I’m interested to know what is your long term back up/archiving system for the oceans of video files you must have? Do you use LTO tapes or anything like that? Maybe you could do a video on that one day. Anyway keep up the good work.
I do have a really really old video on my channel about data management and how I archive my projects. I don't use LTO. I use a combination of bare spinning disk drives that I keep in protective cases and 8TB Seagate Expansion drives that back up the bare drives. And I use an app called NeoFinder to catalog all of them so I can search everything that's on them without having to connect them. Of course once I need the media I need to connect the drives...
Nice...Aperture and Final Cut Pro 7. Now I scan all my film rolls with the lovely PowerBook G4 Titanium running VueScan with the Nikon CoolScan 5000ED. Love it. Digitizing old VHS tape is also done on this PowerBook combined with the Canopus 300. And miniDV's are also stored via this computer using SCLive. Have fun with your setup. PS : Aperture is installed on a external SSD disc running 10.7 I think. Need to check ;-)
I'm hearing FCPx won't capture old miniDV tape so it might be time to get an old pre 10.12 MBP. I have FCP & the old FW cables. You got me thinking Matthew, thanks! Would love to dump LR but use what?
I ran into that issue, and started using OBS Studio to ingest all my old MiniDV. I’m using the FW800>Thunderbolt2>Thunderbolt3 dongle chain. Theres a great video on RUclips showing proper import settings. So far, so good.
I found an older iMac at a thrift store a couple months ago and my intent was to use it when I needed to use Unix based applications. I really need to find out what other things I can do with this thing. Aperture must be awesome.
Very interesting. I still have my Aperture 3 installation disk and a couple of old macs. I always hated light room and was annoyed when Aperture was retired.
Absolutely loved aperture. I used it starting in 2011 when I got a MacBook Pro until it was phased out. It was one of the reason I didn’t get a new MacBook. After the first one. I used my Mac 90% for editing my photos. After that I had no use for a Mac in addition to my ipad
I keep a legacy Mac Mini specifically dedicated to Aperture. By discontinuing Aperture, Apple lost a lot of love (about 30 years worth) from me. Literally a career damaging impacting me - the Photos app being a total joke for professionals. What the world really needs is a Pro, multi-user version of Aperture. Because being the photographer and the manager of a professional photo practice can't be done by a single person. Aperture was great so far as it went, but it does not go far enough when I need to track licensing deals and asset delivery/access for clients. As for apple displays - good luck keeping old Apple displays operating. I've got a graveyard of failed Apple Cinema Displays.
I agree on the needs for a pro photo app. And so far all of my old Thunderbolt Displays are working no problem 🤞 Although I acknowledge their days are numbered 🥺
Apple already makes pro apps for video editors and music producers but they won’t for photographers? Especially since Apple talks so much about how “pro” the iPhone Pro cameras are? They even made a RAW format for stills in the form of ProRaw so c’mon Apple, bring back Aperture and optimize it for Apple Silicon (M and A series chips).
You should give Pixelmator pro a shot on the latest macOS. Apple literally just purchased them too. So if they try and merge it with the future OS updates and phase the apps out if you buy now at least you will have the app and then you can just keep it on your Mac forever and never update the machine. That’s what I’m planning on doing at some point as my i7 2018 MacBook Pro ages and I look into an m4 mini or something. The old Mac stops getting updated so at least I know I will be able to use it for editing photos that way I want and a guarantee I can always edit raws from my old DSLRs without any issues.
If apple brought back aperture with up to date features, one time purchase price like Final Cut X, fully optimised for apple silicon I would buy that immediately.
I know OF Pixlemator/Photomator but I didn't research it too much because my brain locked on to Aperture. I'd love to know if there's a video on RUclips where an experienced photographer talks about all the non-Lightroom options and explains what's good and not good about each of them. I have a feeling that video doesn't exist but if it did... wow 💥📈
"One of the things about the older Thunderbolt Displays. They aren't always perfect". Just like the new Studio Displays. Bought one brand new from Apple... lot's of light leaks and backlight not uniform. Returned it for a replace e t... same issue.
@@matthewTobrien Try a neutral grey background. The standard Apple wall papers combined with regular application UI tend to mask light bleed issues. I tried three demo screens in the store and none of them had the issues. The Apple tech at the Genius Bar suggest this might be a quality control issues but also agreed this shouldn't happen with a display at that price level.
Good on you to catch it and I'm glad that the Apple Store employee saw that it was an issue (as opposed to convincing you that it was "normal"). I'll try to check mine today!
Personally I love the idea. I have an old Early MacBook Pro 2011 and this sounds like a pretty good solution to have a dedicated Workstation for 35mm film scans. I upgraded my old MacBook with more RAM and SSD Storage but at this moment it's only for memories. So this video inspired me to maybe make this myself. I should have Aperture 3, because it was a short time free after they announced it would be discontinued and I grabbed it back then, even I didn't know what it was 😂 Nice video 👍
@@matthewTobrien Oh well then carry on sir! Honestly, I would advertise on reddit you have a working FCP7 install, there are still a lot of editors out there begging for anyone who can convert legacy projects. Good for you!

You need to install a room filter system to keep the dust down. I have the same issue but cannot find and air filters worth buying. Even trying to find filter elements for a furnace is impossible since the country I live in now does not use any forced air heating and cooling. Now the question is where can we find a working copy of Aperture?
i've been so wanting to use Aperture since the moment i found it! i daily drive a 2010 21.5" iMac and a mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro and all i've got now to edit is the built in iPhoto app, which does fine but having the lightroom amount of controls would be so nice... all i need is a copy now LOL
Oh Aperture..still use it, and have several 100gb libraries that Aperture handles so well. Have outputted the libraries to C1 and Photos, but still work best in Aperture’s database, where folders and projects are so easily used, and modified.. Often overlooked, Aperture does best in library databases as well as photo editing. FYI - I use C1 for fine art, LR for general photo use, but Aperture is best for huge libraries.
Oh bugger Mathew ! I have been using Lightroom / Photoshop for the past 4 or 5 years ( not really because I want to) - BUT - you have me now firing up aperture ( had to update Retroactive to have it work on my M1 MacBook Pro Sonoma) and now I am continually fiddling. I had forgotten what a good program it was and how good it looks on a Mac. You are a bugger Mathew for planting that worm. It is a bit like one of those annoying songs ( Eclipse of the heart or Nutbush City Limits - you can’t get it out of your head ) You now have a huge responsibility on your shoulders. (from Australia.)
I want something that's detached from iCloud and relies on local storage. I don't want 118MB photo files to rip through my limited iCloud storage nor do I want them visible in my Photos library across all of my devices. I haven't looked at Pixelmator but I assume it doesn't have strong features for cataloguing? Just editing?
As said in another post, take a look at ON1 Photo RAW. It has cataloguing, RAW editing, even layers and masking, and awesome filters (this function is called ON1 Effects)
@@matthewTobrien Pixelmator is a great extension for the Photos App. It switches really fast to the Pixelmator View when you click on it in Photos. And Photomator is in some ways even better...u open your entire Photos App with all the fotos with Photomator and u can use more advanced controls...all the changes are automatically updated to the Fotos App. Its really good. Thanks for this. It caused me to get out one of my still working older mac book pro laptops that has aperture 3 on it. I only ever used it sparingly in the past but have a lot of pics already loaded in it. I might start to experiment. I too still shoot some film and get them processed by a lab. I find the current version of apple photos on my imac is more than adequate to do what I want with my scans. I have long dropped adobe because of their subscriptions. I did like lightroom but no longer need it or use it.Other people have also recently discovered how good apple photos is. Have you tried it? I would like to see a comparative video of aperture v current Photos app. cheers Geoff
NAS would be ideal, absolutely. I'm hoping to partner with one of the NAS companies to get the product in exchange for promotion. I tried with Synology last year and they felt that giving me an enclosure wasn't worth it to them. I completely disagree.
Using Aperture today may be a mistake except for legacy images if, like me, you only want to retain RAW images. After all, you can derive anything from a RAW, so why maintain anything but the source. The downside is, as new RAW file formats appear, Aperture probably won't work for them.
Luckily all of my film scans are TIFF files so I’m good to go. I don’t plan on editing any images from newer digital images with Aperture. I don’t really shoot anything I care about with my EOS R - just the occasional RUclips thumbnail and I can use the Photos app to edit those. Thanks for watching!
Just a tip sometimes when capturing VHS the audio can slip from the tape being stretched. Panasonic made DVD recorders with hard drives that have built in time base converters. I have one the one I have is the PANASONIC DMR-E80H. There is also a model with a 120gb hard drive model. Even if you don't use these to capture just for the time base converter its worth it. Also I can into a weird problem one time with the top video of a JEM tape I was making for my sister was hooking at the top. I can't remember how I fixed it but I have a few ideas how I might have done it. If it was a NTSC tape I played it my Panasonic VCR and than ran the cables to my Samsung world VCR that plays VHS tapes from any region. Then I might have ran Samsung to my JVC PAL VCR because Samsung had these weird blue lines and other people reported it also. Also I would use a PC with Windows 98 SE and a ATI All In Wonder card and there are a lot of different version of PAL in the settings. There is PAL-A PAL-B PAL-C and so on. Unless you can hunter down all the software for the ATI ALL In Wonder its worth it but it might be hard finding the updated software because the software that came on the disc was not even that good.
Yes! This is a great tip. I have a Panasonic PV-S7680 paired with a Matrox MXO2 box that used years and years ago to digitize VHS through FCP7, and I'm hoping that the combination of the two will allow me to digitize despite there being some timecode breaks with the VHS. It's certainly possible that I'll need to acquire a Timebase Converter box (which are VERY expensive these days). Thanks for the heads up on all the potential pitfalls - this is hugely helpful. With those 2 I dont miss Aperture anymore and its way cheaper then Adobe, but also then Capture One. The Raw Processing is better in other Software though...
@@matthewTobrien Pixelmator doesn't large libraries, but u can use it as an extension in the Fotos App. It is the fastest and best PhotosApp Extension in my opinion. Photomator has less functions, like you cant use it like Photoshop with Layers and all that stuff....it is more like Lightroom and Aperture, but it has better and more controls for enhancing pictures like the Photos App, while having very good "Apple-like" performance. Both Pixelmator and Photomator feel really like Apple Apps and with both in cojunction with Apple Photos u have something that is in many ways more advanced than Aperture. These days everyone looks at Affinity as a replacement for Adobe, but I think Pixelmator became pretty good too!
@@matthewTobrien Photomator recently came out with a File Browser support, and the good part is that the edits will be saved next to the original photos not into one massive catalogue file. It is also quite a bit faster than LR.
Pixelmator Pro is practically as if it were made by Apple, and in fact there are rumors that it was already bought by Apple. In addition to being exclusive to Apple, MacOS, iPadOS and iOS devices, it has an Apple like interface

Just a note: any decent 40 year old camera should have rendered that shot pin-sharp... I've been using SLRs since the 80s and am experienced with every type of automatic and manual focussing solution from the wonderful split-prism tech on my old Pentax, through newer ground-breaking digital focussing that came along in the 90s / 2000s, right up to what I use on my current Nikon DSLR - unsure what's wrong with your poor old camera there!
Have you tried Nick Bhatt's Nitro Photo? He had extensive career at Apple, where he served as the Senior Director of Engineering. During his tenure at Apple, Bhatt led engineering teams for several key projects, including Aperture, iPhoto, and the Mac version of Photos. Also if you want a more modern non-Adobe app have you looked at Photomator or Pixelmator Pto?
I always have a visceral reaction in regards to how old stuff from 10-20 years ago is made to be obsolete. Imagine if the ancient babylonians had something like that: Ohh that ancient babylonian tool would only work properly from 1120BC to 1112BC.
I hate Adobe for their arrogance in abandoning legacy software users and intentionally making the software unusable. I’ve been working with Aperture ever since. Some of its features are vastly superior to Adobe and more specialized. Also have been struggling to continue to use the legacy software for Final Cut Pro studio suite in the big box. Companies can continue to develop new software for new hardware, but there’s no excuse for them to cripple older software on legacy hardware that has been optimized for one purpose. It’s unforgivable. It’s seriously theft of the consumer license agreements. I just want to make the best of the workflow that was state of the art at one time. The social engineering by these software companies is absolutely abusive.
Yes, yes, yes ... I came to Aperture late long after Apple, Inc. had phased it out. However, I always have old Apple desktop systems sitting around along with vintage Apple operating systems. While, I love to use Aperture can never get it to run past Apple's "cat" named operating systems. So, I just keep it on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard (which, also supports Rosetta 1) and it works perfectly (smile ... smile).

Still use aperture with my Mac Pro 5,1 😀
Great video Matthew! Very nice to see Aperture back in action! I think you need the Marty’s Delorean!😂
Otherwise, I still have a subscription to Adobe for After Effects because I need it in my work. Have a nice day!😉
Aperture was worth using just for the beautiful icon in the dock.
Such a great icon 🙌
@@matthewTobrien it’s one of the reasons one uses a Mac type of icon.
I have ZERO clue about all this but can’t wait to learn. Who has an Aperture channel where they teach all this stuff? Might end up being me 🤣🤔
@@matthewTobrien - yeah, you might have to be. 🤣
Haha understood!
Have and still use a Thunderbolt Display which is 12 years old now. Use it with an adapter and my M1 Pro 14 inch MacBook Pro. Sure the resolution isn’t retina, but it still goes strong.
I have two that I use with my Studio Display with my M1 Max Mac Studio and they still work great and look awesome.
I have Aperture on my 27 in Mac (2012 v) and refuse to update my computer , because the new versions do not support Aperture. What a shame....I love using Aperture.
Glad I’m not the only crazy one, the same Mac Pro is dual boot to Sonoma via opcl and mavericks just to be able to edit my mid 2000 Dsrl photos ….i missed aperture a lot but funny thing is Photomator is becoming what aperture should be
Maybe we.... Think Different? 😅
Aperture was the best in its time. And the fastest. A joy to work with and get awesome results with minimal effort.
Still no idea why Apple killed off Aperture.. it was such a good piece of software. Would love if they brought it back.
I made a whole video about why I thought they killed it... 48k views and counting: ruclips.net/video/vzcjxxRB1Js/видео.htmlsi=dFaFYANIMtJBlBIA
Because apple about simplify things the apple brain dead people. Same reason the killed FireWire on iPod touch for usb. People complained
@@matthewTobrien Thanks! I'm sure that there'd be a learning curve, at least a little bit, to switch over to the Affinity apps.
That green light on the right side of your display, does that go away when you move your screen in the opposite direction? I'm thinking maybe some strong magnetic field could be causing that - like that of a loudspeaker, or similar, and your display may actually be fine.
Great question. I will take a look at it tomorrow to find out!
Apple should relaunch the Aperture photo software for Mac and even app for iOS
Epic retro setups! I'm envious for sure!
I'm hearing FCPx won't capture old miniDV tape so it might be time to get an old pre 10.12 MBP. I have FCP & the old FW cables. You got me thinking Matthew, thanks! Would love to dump LR but use what?
Not a lot of options outside of Lightroom sadly. And I’m gonna keep some old Macs around just in case I come up with some other crazy ideas…
I ran into that issue, and started using OBS Studio to ingest all my old MiniDV.
I’m using the FW800>Thunderbolt2>Thunderbolt3 dongle chain. Theres a great video on RUclips showing proper import settings. So far, so good.
I use FCPx and canon xl1
I found an older iMac at a thrift store a couple months ago and my intent was to use it when I needed to use Unix based applications.
I really need to find out what other things I can do with this thing. Aperture must be awesome.
Very interesting. I still have my Aperture 3 installation disk and a couple of old macs. I always hated light room and was annoyed when Aperture was retired.
Might be time to fire up an old machine and see if you can use it!
Absolutely loved aperture. I used it starting in 2011 when I got a MacBook Pro until it was phased out. It was one of the reason I didn’t get a new MacBook. After the first one. I used my Mac 90% for editing my photos. After that I had no use for a Mac in addition to my ipad
Same here. I have a delicated MacPro2009 just for Aperture, and the photo library still keep updating...

Nice video, Yes you should always keep all your old toys and this is another reason too!
Haha agreed!
How about photos app? Do they have the same feature as aperture for file organisers? I love aperture, managed to build grain filter in it.
My cd player on my Cube is dead , I cannot install Aperture again, I still have the original CD 😢
If apple brought back aperture with up to date features, one time purchase price like Final Cut X, fully optimised for apple silicon I would buy that immediately.
Lightroom would have some serious competition. I’d buy a new version of Aperture in a heartbeat.
Apple would add a subscription service to it
Doesn’t Pixelmator have Photomator now? I don’t know if it’s a Lightroom/Aperture competitor, but that’s been my Adobe alternative for photos.
I know OF Pixlemator/Photomator but I didn't research it too much because my brain locked on to Aperture. I'd love to know if there's a video on RUclips where an experienced photographer talks about all the non-Lightroom options and explains what's good and not good about each of them. I have a feeling that video doesn't exist but if it did... wow 💥📈
I hope your carpet was clean? Did it scratch the hell out of it 😅 Ioved aperture.
Yeah, carpet was clean (well, clean enough). Fortunately I vacuum it on the regular. :) Still, probably should have put a towel down.
You have no idea how much i love this video.
"One of the things about the older Thunderbolt Displays. They aren't always perfect".
Just like the new Studio Displays. Bought one brand new from Apple... lot's of light leaks and backlight not uniform. Returned it for a replace e t... same issue.
Sorry to hear that, Tom. I have the Studio Display as well and will have to look closely at it to see if I have a similar issue.
Yikes, good to know because I’m looking to get one this Fall.
I should have Aperture 3, because it was a short time free after they announced it would be discontinued and I grabbed it back then, even I didn't know what it was 😂

Both FCPX and Resolve can record from tape deck playback, why did you need FCP7?
Because it’s fun. Absolutely don’t need it.

I remember Aperture and loved it.
I love it now! Didn't use it much back before they killed it.
@@matthewTobrien indeed!
IF they still had something similar available combined with the new ipads, I would be very tempted to get one for mobile use...
I can't activate my copy of aperture
Oh no! Maybe your operating system isn't compatible?
Why not use the regular Photos app, or pixelmator?
I had always thought about it with my Adobe conundrum but it wasn't until I started shooting film that I found a real need for it. Glad I did!
Would a NAS be appropriate for your use case. A lot of storage, accessible locally... Sounds like the ideal use case for a NAS
NAS would be ideal, absolutely. I'm hoping to partner with one of the NAS companies to get the product in exchange for promotion. I tried with Synology last year and they felt that giving me an enclosure wasn't worth it to them. I completely disagree.
@@matthewTobrienWell I hope it works out for you!
I loved Aperture so much. I wish Apple would bring it back.
Thanks for watching!
if it still works use it. get a spare Mac pro as well. and keep them well maintained.
Oh I'm going to!
If you want to check out part 1 of my series on setting up my VHS digitization situation you can watch it here: ruclips.net/video/ZEmHYxLwJXs/видео.htmlsi=0qIXwFShQ2Q7_vbT

But I really feel that the Pixelmator Pro Extension is a very good replacement...and so is there other App Photomator. With those 2 I dont miss Aperture anymore and its way cheaper then Adobe, but also then Capture One. The Raw Processing is better in other Software though...
I’ll have to look into those apps. I’ve heard of them but didn’t think they catalogued large libraries of images.

I always have a visceral reaction in regards to how old stuff from 10-20 years ago is made to be obsolete. Imagine if the ancient babylonians had something like that: Ohh that ancient babylonian tool would only work properly from 1120BC to 1112BC.
Yeah, that's sadly part of specialization. Our tools no longer are generic hammers but sophisticated code/machines
I miss using Aperture
Yeah, I'm sure that I'm not alone, but I really prefer to own my software.
It's my preference as well, but there are plenty of subscriptions that I use daily and am happy with.
Aperture is great program✨
