Man that magnetic mask tool is giving me flashbacks of Adobe After Effects from over 10 years ago. It's great not to have to use a separate app.
I'm glad they didn't ruin the UI and "modernize it" and make everything enormous like it's designed for an old person with +500% text size.... That's what I was most worried about with a big FCP update

Great video as always guys, many thanks. One addition I would like (unless I'm missing something), is a shrink/expand on the magnetic mask as the feather doesn't cut it when compositing onto contrasted backgrounds for example. Surely a simple fix that might come quite soon.

Thank you so much for uploading another great tutorial. I love the magnetic mask feature because it does exactly what I have been wanting to do for a long time. The ability to use an effect like a mask glow directly on to the viewer, it detects the subject and applies the effect. However, I noticed that if my subject interacts with another unmasked subject sometimes the effect or some of the effect is left on the unmasked subject. Has anybody else experienced this and how do I prevent this please? Also can text be tracked to a subject which has the magnetic mask applied to move as the masked subject moves please? Thank you very much in advance.

(Writing and filming) like what Apple is doing although they could do even more! I still have my MacBook Air 2019 so no sequoia for me :( I might get a new Mac later, for now I don’t need to invest as my videos will be short and simple. Anyway I try to keep up to date with the app. It’s a shame that Apple don’t do more creative stuff, in particular with captions and AI tools like Captions AI or Filmora 14. Some great new tools here for sure! Now all I have to do is finish zoning the last set of tools for 10.8.1 and then move on to these in version 11! 😅 I assume that you will be updating your Final Cut Pro education to meet Final Cut Pro 11 soon?

I just renamed the color corrector I used to normalize the clip. Normalizing is the process of creating good dynamic range and color balance before moving on to other color grading tasks like shot matching, secondary corrections, and creating a look.
I am excited but feel disappointed. My hope was a change to 11 would bring more than it did. Why we still don't have an actual audio mixer is infuriating. I never thought I would ever say Apple is playing catch up to Capcut, but here we are. I am not leaving FCP, but I am tired of having to use other editors to do what I would prefer to do in FCP.
I can’t understand why they don’t make this a priority. You would imagine at least they can make a native round trip to logic. It’s such a basic necessity.

On another note: Two things about Magnetic masking that are challenging me: 1) When I use the 2-clip method, my computer (M1PRO 10c,16c) struggles with playback of 4k H264 footage (even though it’s rendered.)Ive never tried that before. Its like the clips are not "fully rendered" . It works significantly better with ProRes, but it’s still a bit frustrating since I have to export every time I use the effect. 2) In particularly tricky masking situations, it sometimes creates a lot of on/off mask selections, causing parts of the image to flicker.
Too bad that transcription is only available in English. I've done a couple tests, and they do not seem very accurate... Also, not having text based editing and not being able to create simple titles is really sad. I hope that we will see soon a new update with all those problems solved. Edit: great video by the way. Any idea if there's a way of exporting the anaglyph image as you see it while you're editing ... ie, so that you can view it with those funny retro two-tone specs without needing a Vision Pro? I've had a quick look and the only workaround I can see is to do screen shots frame by frame while watching back in FCP, import them as an image sequence and then re-export as a movie. Which is obviously absurd. But it would be a fun thing to be able to do!
It would seem Transcribe to Captions requires Apple Silicon as well as Sequoia. Requirements for this feature only mention Sequoia in the Final Cut Pro User Guide for Mac. I'm running Sequoia on an Intel Core i7 iMac and the Transcribe to Captions function is not available in the interface. However, and interestingly enough, the Magnetic Mask feature does work on my iMac.
Do the magnetic mask works only with effects and color correction? Does it able to use titles to be tracked to a subject, like the mtracker 3D, that tracks the area so we can attach some of frozen titles in the scene?
I'm happy with some aspects of the captions but it's still disappointing in other areas. If you want to move captions you can't finesse the position. You can't add any other effects apart from bold, italic or underlined. You can't change font of the text or the colour of the background, just the colour of the text itself. You can't have animations for the captions or transitions. You can't specify the max amount of characters, if you want it on one or two lines. Line spacing. It's a good step forward but man i wish when they did things like this they brought them in line with their competitors.
I hear you. It’s great to have caption generation inside FCP now, but I think a lot of us were hoping for browser level text based editing tools like Resolve, and even Descript and CapCut etc. I’m hoping we see this transcription workflow expanded in the coming months, because text based editing in the browser is something that Final Cut’s needed for a while now, and would be an incredible feature to finally have access to. For now though, captions transcription in the timeline feels like a good first step.

@@kuriseon I don't think it's about being "unique and proprietary"; I think it's about allowing the editor to edit faster and more intuitively. YMMV. You can use roles on Video just as you do on audio.
I'm confused in the captions options: You burned them in at 6:22 but exported an srt file for youtube. But why would you bother exporting a sep file whne the captions are burned in on screen anyway? I've always liked the option of turning captions OFF on youtube and don't understand WHY creators burn them in for TikTok (when you can turn them ON or Off in TikTok settings). It's worse when comedians have them on and they show up before the audio thereby ruining their audio delivery of the punchline.
@@N7DRONES All you do is put the title between the clips - untouched clip on the bottom, then the title, then the duplicate clip with magnetic mask applied to remove the background.

Taking a chance here that anyone has run into this issue. I thought the update would fix it, but no go. Lately, when I import, the transcoding never gets past 3%. When I close FCP, it says "tasks are currently in progress," but I quit anyway. The next time I open, there's no sign of any transcoding needed and I proceed as normal, but I'm still worried something''s "missing" by FCP not completing that step. Any thoughts?
@@redesignedlife777 I definitely do want constant crashing. Right now my FCP 10.8.1 crashes a lot requiring preferences to be reset often. I didn't wanna upgrade to FCP 11 lest Apple get rid of this exciting feature. Glad to hear that they retained it!
Pretty sure the masking and subtitle transcription is done by the neural processor which likely means M series chips only. But I have no real idea...I'm sure someone else will let you know for sure.
HA ! I knew it ! I remember seeing all those sheep running to davinci or paying a $20 Auto-caption plugin. All I had to do is wait for about 3 years and BOOM , just like that ! $20 well saved !
This would be sad if editing and organizing files wasn't 5 times better than anything, including DaVinci :) Every other NLE is like a Chinese phone compared to iPhone, it has more features, but the most important things you do 90% the time are half assed :)

Yes duplicate clip is the safe way to go but that being said the masking capabilities have improved tremendously.

The Magnetic Mask tool is clearly next gen. The way it captures hair and creates a more stable mask is much better than Resolve.

You may need to refine the mask. Track the text to the subject with the Object Tracker.

That's what the Object Tracker is for.

I don't see that happening. FCP uses a trackless paradigm for a reason...

Excited to see how AI will do the edit for me, I already use Otter AI to transcribe and summarize interviews externally.

How are you creating your captions in the first place? If you create them as SRT (just assign the correct role), then they should export as SRT.

This would be sad if editing and organizing files wasn't 5 times better than anything, including DaVinci :) Every other NLE is like a Chinese phone compared to iPhone, it has more features, but the most important things you do 90% the time are half assed :)
