The double-tap with two fingers is Shift+Z for anyone without a trackpad. Also, you'll love this; in the timeline press Z to change to the Zoom tool then click and drag over any selection of clips and the timeline area will zoom to fit for those specific clips only, works 2 clips, a 100 etc. So helpful.
Great tips! I’ve got the Shift + Z command queued up for another Tips & Tricks video. Will take a closer look at the Zoom tool tricks you described. Thanks for watching! 🙌🏻
Super helpful, thank you. I'm one of those 'I've been editing in FCPX for four years and only know like three key commands' kinda guy. You've blown my mind!
Ahhhh, through the magic of video, I just discovered you. Thanks for these tips! BTW... to get rid of your heater noise, you can "export sound only," import it to Audacity (free, as you know), find a spot of just heater noise, get Audacity to analyze the sound, then highlight the whole audio track and tell Audacity to remove it. Then... export it as an mp3, import it to FCP, line it up with your sound track (it will be the same length, so really easy) and delete the old sound. Voila... clean sound, no heater! Love your "asides, " and hope your child is doing well too! Thanks for your video.
Hahaha, well played, Charlie. 👏🏻 And that's a GREAT tip for getting rid of the heater noise. Didn't think of using Audacity for that, but now I've got another, ahem, magic trick up my sleeve for repairing audio. I will definitely have Audacity handy for the future (and I'll double-check to be sure my furnace is off before I roll cameras 🤣)
good stuff... see these are the things of pure imagination! Sooo needed... You know we play an idea in our head while editing and boy does quick keys are amazing!!!!
Great Video ... Just adding onto the Ctrl T tip Select in(i) and out(o) and then press Ctrl T to get the exact required length of the basic title. I use this for other titles/Adjustment layer as well by selecting in and out and double-clicking on the required title in the sidebar.
Absolutely! Check out my follow-up video to this one (9 MORE Tips for FCPX That Feel Like Magic) and I go over that sweeeeeeet key command there. Glad you're using it! 🙌🏻🤘🏻
Thanks, Matthew. The _replace_ command is even more awesome when you know, that you do NOT have to select the clip in the timeline. Nor do you have to move the skimmer / playhead to the edit point. The command will replace the clip the skimmer is over.
Fantastic tips!! Thank you! One additional note for non-trackpad users: Shift+Z will show you your entire timeline similar to you 2 finger double-tap. Thanks again.
This is the single most helpful tutorial on Final Cut I have seen. Every tip was useful to me and every explanation was perfectly clear. You are the best- THANK YOU!!
Thank you for your help first off!!! I just got the browser note together. I love it thanks. I found out you have to make your note word in the inspector. I had this crazy editing project about this summer. Writing out your word in the note field didn’t work for me. Thank you.
Completely agree. Maybe Apple kept it off by default so RUclipsrs like me could discover it, realize how awesome it is, and then make a video that includes how to do it (and other tips) so that the video could go "viral" and feel like magic for everyone who didn't know about it??? 🤣😝 Glad it's going to be a big help for you! It certainly has been for me!
Very nice. One trick you missed is the related trick to Option-R to replace a selection on the timeline with a selection in the Browser but keeping the timeline clip duration. What if you want the browser selection range instead? The companion to that is Shift-R where the length of the chosen clip in the Browser takes precedence. Opt-R for timeline timing and Shift-R for browser selection timing. Another thing you can use with this and many other clip replacements is knowing how to keep the effects you've built up on the timeline selection. Once you've made the timeline selection, do a Copy (CMD-C) then, after you replaced the clip with a fresh version of itself from the Browser, do a Option-Command-V to paste back any effects the original selection had. The only thing the Option-Command-V will not restore is any audio changes. For example, I'll often change a Stereo track to Dual Mono. Once a replacement clip is on the timeline, fix the audio arrangement then Option-Command-V so that any audio effects are applied correctly. I often use that CMD-C / Option-CMD-V sequence to keep effects when replacing a clip by any means. Sure, you can use Shift-Command-V to choose which effects you apply back to the clip, but when you know you want everything, the one keystroke is Opt-Cmd-V. Once more trick before I go; Want to blade a section quickly? Hold R (for Range) and drag select on the Timeline. Then, CMD-X, CMD-V. What this does is remove the selection but then you put it right back except that the selection is now bladed at each end.
Excellent! I try to focus on single tips in the videos so I can save tips like those for future Tips & Tricks videos. Great point about “saving” your effects you had applied to the clip you’re going to replace. You know your stuff, Don! 🙌🏻👌🏻
How nice that I can give you some additional tips after you have gave me such good and new information. Change the command keys Command B an the Command [ ]into just B and [ ]. You probably know how to do that. This works so much better. Make a range where you want to put your title. The title will be automatically in the preffered length . If you want to zoom in on a particular part of the timeline. Hold the Z button and drag over the part of the timeline you want to see closer. Thanks again for a great tutorial!!

This was a good video. I feel your pain with the heat kicking on. I make videos in a basement shop. There is a furnace, water heater, freezer, and refrigerator all within earshot of my microphone. I decided to just not worry about them anymore because otherwise I was going to go insane.
Haha - that makes me feel better! I have a smart thermostat and can control it from my phone, but I also have it automated so at certain times it will turn back in if it was turned off. The middle of my vlog was one of those times. 🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Dude these tricks are truly MAGIC! The Ripple tip is going to be really useful. One thing when trimming the fat, I use “R” select then delete. For mouse users like me much faster.

Yes! I’m very curious about the different programmable hardware / software peripherals that do this. Currently using Streamdeck Mobile with my iPad to do similar things. Going to be putting out a video with a rundown of how I set it up and what I think about it’s impact on the editing process. Love this stuff!
@@matthewTobrien BTW- Don’t remember if I said this already. I was having a maddening problem with FCPX crashing, even after running First Aid and resetting preferences. I like to edit sitting in my recliner with my M1 MacBook Pro and found it is ridiculously easy to accidentally disconnect external drives this way. I just assumed that was the problem. Then “resetting preferences” stopped working. Instead I got a dialogue box asking if I wanted to reopen windows that were open when it crashed. Without that, the only way I could fix it was to restore from a Time Machine backup I had made with a dedicated drive. Still crashed. What to do?? Then, I found it. An external monitor was causing the crash. I had an older low resolution 1920x1080 HDMI monitor connected to the hub. I was using it as the viewer for HD projects. Still, FCPX hated it. It hasn’t crashed since. FYI in case this comes up with your viewers.
Wow. What a story. One of the first troubleshooting steps I learned as an Apple tech support advisor was to disconnect all peripherals and see if the issue still happens. It’s the root issue more than most of us realize. Thanks for the update!
@@matthewTobrien Yep, I knew that but it fooled me. It would launch just fine had my last session quit in Default Workspace mode or after successfully Resetting Preferences. Thanks, a lot of many good clips. I wish there was a way to see which clips were re-timed after opening a project again. The only way I know of is command+R on each clip.
For those without the trackpad you can still Zoom timeline to fit with Shift - Z. (also works with Magic Mouse, Just double tab with one finger) Also if you want to replace your clip, drag it onto the clip you are replacing to get a few more options. Thanks for the great tips. Oh Last one is to customize your key commands to help save a lot of time. I have changed Duration, Group, Zoom in and Zoom out to not have anything held down. (ie. D,G,=,and -) I always forgot what to hold anyways.
Great additions, MrDJ. And that’s a great idea to make Duration, Compound Clips, and Zoom In/Out as single keystrokes. Especially for Zoom In/Out. 👌🏻🙌🏻 Thanks for watching and commenting!
Things like Trim head and trim tail, match frame, replace clip, copy a clip to a particular track - I'd be surprised if they were missing from FCPX - but selecting cross dissolves with metadata - that's very useful.
Yes mostly very basic things - but FCPX is so accessible to use with just mouse-dragging, and is used by a lot of keen amateurs, so this is a nice soft introduction to fundamental NLE elements.
Haha - yeah, had to leave that in. And glad my voice sounds good! I was particularly ASMR in this video... Maybe that's the secret ingredient that has made it climb to over 80k views!
yes! ripple trim is ESSENTIAL! once I started using FCPX after Premiere, I changed my shortcuts to match the Premiere ones since I don't have to take my right hand of the mouse 🤘

Yes mostly very basic things - but FCPX is so accessible to use with just mouse-dragging, and is used by a lot of keen amateurs, so this is a nice soft introduction to fundamental NLE elements.
amazing buddy!! Just what I was looking for! great video!
So glad you found what you were looking for! ✌🏻🤙🏻🤘🏻
Awesome how you kept that part with your girl in. Love the vibe, the editing, your voice and the tips. Got yourself a new subscriber :D
Sounds like we've got a Power User here! So awesome when you can get everything set up so your hand never leaves your mouse / trackpad. Nicely done!
@@matthewTobrien Thanks! Working on it! Subbed btw 💙 qual content
Awesome! Thank you!
Recently switched to FCPX from movavi. Wanna learn more from you

Glad it was helpful!
1) it's weird that by the time I watched this your 4 year old is 6. 2) the timeline index was my favorite. Glad I watched it all.
The Timeline Index is awesome!
Great video Mathew, thanks for sharing!! I am not really a beginner to FCPX but certainly not a pro at all. But some of these tips will be added to my editing process for sure!!
Awesome! And I consider myself a pro user, and I'm STILL learning new things about the software constantly. I've loved my journey with FCPX, and I certainly hope my videos can help all of you on your quest to DOMINATE in your own work and content creation. 🙌🏻
@@matthewTobrien keep them coming brother and I have shared a couple videos with my fellow BBQ FCPX users so you might be seeing a few more of us guys with bbq sauce stains on our chins dropping by in the comments!! Ha ha
@@matthewTobrien oh ya by the way some great audio editing in FCPX would be awesome!! Not joining to mention any names but some bozo bumped his audio level on his go wireless and had a very hard time even considering posting my newest video in 7 mins. Ha ha I have no idea and there are a lot of us out here that could use an way to understand what all these different audio effects do especially when you have to fix complete garbage blown out audio.
I’ll welcome them to the party with open arms!
Good to know! I’ll think on that and see what I can come up with. Sorry to hear about the peaking audio!
Thank you very much for your work on this! Very appreciated!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the great video. They now have that amazing voice isolation feature for that heater in the future 😄
Ohhhhh and I've used it plenty of times just for that!
Thanks. My favorites are the orange bar and shortcut for titler.
Show Used Media Ranges FTW! Such a great feature. Came in handy on my latest video for sure! Thanks for watching!
Double tap trackpad... BRILLANT! Thanks for the other tips too. ;)
