On a European Spanish QWERTY Keyboard, the equivalent of the tilde key is the ^ key located to the right of the P key. Personally it took me years to discover this and i believe its absolutely key (never better said), to be able to work and appreciate the magnetic timeline... It's was a life saver to me, and it's the one of the first trick I explain to new FCPX users.
Hi Matt, for a start, thanks for FCPX tips, really very useful. I play with an old mid 2012 MacBook Pro, and I am learning to edit with fcpx. Congratulations, the Toymaker is a very good right to the point documentary, well crafted, and the artisan is a lovely character. Keep on with the good work! David from Brazil.
I dont know where we all would be without the help of all these great filmmakers on RUclips...I imagine learning all this with a Manual or something...THANK YOU!
Also have a trick for you, if you film in slow motion for example in a factory where you shoot how a spring is turned or fabrics are sewn, and the factory is lit with fluorescent tubes you will see that this light flickers in slow motion. You can easily fix this by copying that clip and placing it above your timeline and making it 50% transparent and then moving it 1 frame left or right, you may need 2 frames depending on how your recording is. The lightening and darkening of the clip will then be cancelled out by the second clip running in phase. Compare it to how you can have noise reduction in headphones by putting anti-noise in phase. Oh and Tilde ~ on a lot of non US Keyboard is ALT + N
Thanks so much!!! Starting in Final Cut Oro is beyond daunting, really appreciate u sharing these time saver tips, really helps with the Chopping of the Broccoli!!!!
If you don't have Tilde key, you can assign a different shortcut for that command. The command is "override connections" which can be reached in keyboard shortcut page in fcpx.
Excellent point! Might need to make a video specifically for non QWERTY users to show them how to set up this incredible feature for happier Magnetic Timeline editing. Thanks for watching!

The zoom box was completely new for me, and great, thank you for that. As far as the audio crossfade is concerned, there was a solution already with 10.3 (or so?), when they introduced an _apply audio fades_ command. You can basically select all clips in your timeline and apply the fades (need a custom shortcut though). Before, one needed to change the default duration of audio fades to "0,01 seconds". Thereby, the audio of each clip always fades in and out on the subframe-level. People on fcp.co found out by opening an iMovie project in FCP, where there are never any clicking sounds on the edit points. Audio nerds often say they prefer this over crossfades. I suggest a custom command for "silence". Mine is "0" (zero). Good idea to make Automatic Speed a shortcut. I add Optical Flow for time-remapping. Mostly use automatic speed merely as a starting point. On my german keyboard, the tilde key is n with modifier, but you can re-assign "°" (degree) in the same position. On my german keyboard, there unfortunately are no [ + ] (left and right bracket), your last tutorial. Trim start is opt.+ ß, trim end is opt. + ü. This is not intuitive by any stretch of the imagination. Rounded brackets ( , ) are shift 8 and shift 9. Both commandsare free. But without modifier 8 is cut and switch to angle 8 and 9 is cut and switch to angle 9. Since I never had 8 multicam angles, I use these instead. And _since_ then, I use the commands all the time!
All great points, Axel! Especially about applying audio fades since 10.3. Great suggestion for programming “silence” to 0. Gonna have to try that out. Greatly appreciate it, Charlie! Again, so glad you're getting a lot of value out of my vids. And thanks for supporting the channel with a little 💰. Love creating this content and helping all of you level up!
Three finger drag is a Godsend. Ever since I found it on a youtube video, it's been the only way I use my trackpad. Every time I have to use a Windows computer I miss this gesture so much!

Greetings! My second watch, my second knowledge gain, my second like of one of your videos. Just to emphasis from my first comment in the first video. BTW, you're a great editor and tutor, but when it comes to acting...don't quit your day job! Naw, just rib'n ya, 😂 Thanks for the tips.
For those who are not finding the tilde key on your keyboard, the "name" of the shortcut is "override connections".... you can find it on your keyboard shortcuts and customize it to any other key.
Love your videos and i learned a lot. One Pro Tipp from me to you which saves a lot of time and key travel: Map your zooming keys cmd + and cmd - to A and S Keys. So you can zoom in and out with one finger of your left hand instead of needing two hands. Greeets and love,
Hey. Very useful video. Thanks. I know a little trick - press the command-D then 3 seconds and instead of 00 frames you can press "," and there will be 3 seconds and 00 frames.
Gotta use those all-new chapter markers to skip to the good stuff! Although I’d argue that Jurassic Park / Velociraptor part is every bit as good as the 9 tips. Come on, Mike! 🦖🦕
The TILDE key on my Belgian keyboard is next to the enter key. it says £ ` The crossfade thing didn't work, but after fidling with customizing shortcuts I got it to work. Again some great stuff you showed us here. Thnx man !
Thanks for sharing that, Davy! I keep saying I need to create a master list of how the shortcuts in this video convert to other international keyboards, and I certainly have it on my to-do list but as the channel grows I keep getting busier and busier! Thanks so much for watching!
Hi, Matthew! Great videos with lots of great tips! I've been using FCPX for a while now, but I definitely learned a couple tricks from you that can be huge timesavers. I have a trick for you: you can save an additional couple of keystrokes when retiming a clip that is to be a round number e.g. 10:00 (instead of 10:08, etc.) by hitting ENTER after the decimal point. So, type 10. and hit ENTER instead of typing 10.00+ENTER. This might not be a big deal for some users, but I like it :) Keep up the great work!
Dang, Chris! That's a great tip! I will adjust how I enter my retimes from now on! For us power users, it absolutely is a big deal. We know well enough that any extra and unnecessary keystrokes add up over the course of our projects - gotta trim and cut anywhere we can! Thanks for watching and Happy New Year!

Matthew, thanks so much. I've learned a lot with this video. I've added several shortcuts to the Notion document where I list my FCPX. shortcuts. My aim is to add at least one new one every day. With your videos, it's easy
Hi Matthew, really enjoy your tutorials, the zoom option has been around for quite some time it’s good to see you discovered it now and you can also double click the waveform of the clip to expand the audio track instead of control+s. Keep up the good work.
Another great video, thanks. However, I am in the UK and use the "British" Apple QWERTY keyboard. We don't have the "tilde" key you refer to to help move clips. For us the "tilde" is generated by "command-N" but that kicks off creating a New Project. Using the key in the location of your tilde key doesn't work either so I have not, so far, found away to replicate what you are demonstrating in this section of your tips.
There are a ton of comments on this vid where folks drop what key to use on their keyboard - I wonder if you have the accent grave key on your UK keyboard? Technically Apple lists the shortcut with the grave key, not the tilde key. Let me know if you have any luck!
@@matthewTobrien Many thanks. Yes, found it. On the UK keyboard it is next the the "Z" key (That, I must tell you, is the ZED key, not the ZEE key!!!!). - between the ZED key and the left hand SHIFT key. Tried it and yes, it does exactly what your video says. Many thanks.
Yeah, I need to update that info - saying it's the Tilde key, I'm sure, has sent quite a few non-US QWERTY keyboard users insane. 😬 Enjoy the new trick!

Holy Smokes, Mind Blown - Well, I didn't feel like Luke but Jurassic Park for sure. I am a total newbie and just watched the Part One. Every time you showed "the old slow way" that is exactly what I am doing. Those original magic tips were top shelf and so dig the bonus tips. Then, this follow up episode, information overload. I looked away just as you said," And The Bonus..." and I engaged again. Command L Rocks!! So Helpful. I am stoked, a lot went over my head, will watch a couple more times, but I am rejuvenated about creating something again. Huge Thank You!! I clicked the Thumbs Up and about to hit Subscribe. My only question is," How do you know aliens don't exist in Final Cut?" Cheers
This is such great feedback! Thanks for commenting and watching the vid. So glad you got some value out of it (and maybe a little entertainment, too). 🙌🏻🤘🏻
There are shortcuts for accessing Apple’s default Workspaces, but I don’t believe there are any to switch between custom workspaces. I’ll have to double-check, though. Thanks for watching!
Thanks, Chris! And that’s exactly what I did in the early days of learning Keyboard Shortcuts - kept a list of the ones I wanted to learn by the computer so I could quickly refer to it and make it a habit. Thanks for watching! 🙌🏻👌🏻🤘🏻
When I use option T it has the fades but it doesn't add the extra frames to make it a Crossfade. I still have to do that manually, and I have the latest version of Final Cut Pro.
Hmmmm. When you hit Control + S on each of the clips where you've applied the Audio Crossfade, you're *not* seeing the expanded audio overlapping the cut point?
Also, I discovered that holding "Shift + Tilda key" gave a permanent 'orange circle' option to the cursor, so it can be useful for anyone just trying to re-arrange their second video line without willing to disturb the top layer at all.
Very good! I always forget the process for moving the connector point in the morning timeline! You have a magic trick to solve my geezer brain syndrome! Yeah, I cut my editing chops with glue, manual 16mm rewinds, a synchronizer block and an edit bin 50+ years ago! So, yeah, all this stuff is beyond magic! :)
Moving Clip Connections doesn't happen to often, but always good to remember Command + Option + Click when you need to use it! Quite the history as an editor! My days go back to digitizing DV tape (that the post lab created from our 16mm prints) using a deck and a G5 Mac Pro. Can't imagine using glue to edit! 🤣 Thanks for watching, Warren!
Hi ! Thank you for this great video. Love the Zoom feature by Holding the Z key. Do you have any idea on how to Unzoom or Dezoom quickly ? Thanks in advance,
Best option for zooming out quickly is to use the Shift + Z keyboard shortcut. Or, if you're a Magic Trackpad user, you can double-tap the trackpad to do what Shift + Z does. For finer control, you'll have to rely on Command + or Command -
Hello Matthew, thank you for sharing with us those tips. I'l like to ask you about keyboard shortcuts. Most of them you've mentioned, are not working on mine (spanish keyboard) i tried to customize it by searching the actions but it's hard to find them. I think there is an issue between FCP and the mapping keys. Do you know if it's possible to change FCP language to english to try if I can find the shortcuts? or maybe would you mind to share your customized shortcuts to us for download and import to our FCP? Many thanks! Keep going! Very goos work :)
Sorry to hear that they aren't working, Ferran! I know it's frustrating to see a video like this with some useful shortcuts but they don't translate to international keyboards. I need to look into this a bit more to try to help because I do want my videos to apply to folks using non-English/US/UK keyboards. Let me see what I can come up with....
I don't know that you really need to get out of the Hold + Z + Draw to Zoom function. If you need to quickly zoom back out of your timeline, you can use the Command - or Shift + Z. If I'm not understanding your question correctly, let me know!
Could you possibly do a tutorial on making a lyric video or kinetic typography video? Thanks. I use Motion; could I do it in there, instead? It would seem a much longer process to me, as there are so many layers involved. Any ideas?
That's a bit out of my wheel house unfortunately. My company got hired ONCE to do a lyric video, and I immediately had ol' DJ (check out the earliest channel vids to see who he is) take care of it. We did that lyric video in FCP, I believe.
If coffee shops were open when I am, I would've jumped out of my seat and said 'Get the F outta here! This is the devil's work. Matthew is a witch I say, a witch!' Alas, coffee shops are closed here so I'll have to wait. Great work again, thanks for the tips!

Thanks for posting this - this may be the only place on the Net where this information exists! I couldn’t easily find anything on this. 🤷🏻♂️
@@matthewTobrien Thank you very much!
Ah no ... the tilde is THIS symbol: ~ ... you can get it with Opt (Strg) + N = ~ .... this symbol: ^ is the circumflex accent 😉
@@borisbojic Correct, if it is the SYMBOL you want to write down.. But I suggest you have not paid attention to the desired FUNCTION-key looked for at 11:28 ;) To achieve are clip repositioning without worrying about any clip connection, the key I was writing about, is the one you have to press+hold when you drag that clip around. I hope any confusion is clarified now ^^
@@gogomtb1 Aaah right, thanks :-)
You. Are. The. Man. You keep giving and giving. REALLY appreciate you. Found your PayPal, too.
Agreed! Keep spreading the word. I can’t imagine working on a computer without it. 🤘🏻
I really appreciated that you added chapters to your video. Makes it much more efficient. Thanks !
Completely agree! Going to go back through my older videos and add them in. Such a great feature! 🤘🏻👌🏻🙌🏻🤙🏻
I greatly appreciate your videos. Your style and tone are amazing. You come off as knowledgable yet informal at the same time. Please keep them coming.
That is incredibly kind of you to say, Mark, and greatly appreciated. This kind of response goes a long way, and it helps me to look even more forward to creating content and building community with all of you. Thanks for watching! 🤘🏻🙌🏻
Greetings! My second watch, my second knowledge gain, my second like of one of your videos. Just to emphasis from my first comment in the first video. You are presenting in dark mode, but zooming in, showing arrows, using your cursor, everything to make following along easy. Far and away you are the best FCP channel.
BTW, you're a great editor and tutor, but when it comes to acting...don't quit your day job! Naw, just rib'n ya, 😂
Thanks for the tips.
Haha ... yeah, I hear ya on the acting thing. 🎭 Definitely not my strength - but I do think it helped me to work well with a teleprompter! 🤷🏻♂️
For those who are not finding the tilde key on your keyboard, the "name" of the shortcut is "override connections".... you can find it on your keyboard shortcuts and customize it to any other key.
Awesome! Thanks for this great tip. 🙌🏻
Wow, thank you for this man! Huge tips to help the workflow
So great to hear that! Thanks for watching!
The tilde key action is a GAME CHANGER! Thank you
You're so welcome! It blew my mind when I learned it, too! Enjoy!
Love your videos and i learned a lot.
One Pro Tipp from me to you which saves a lot of time and key travel:
Map your zooming keys cmd + and cmd - to A and S Keys. So you can zoom in and out with one finger of your left hand instead of needing two hands.
Greeets and love,
That’s an awesome tip. I keep debating what to map to the A and S keys, but this is definitely a top contender. Thanks for watching!!! 🙌🏻✌🏻🤘🏻
More good tips, thanks Matthew!
Absolutely! Hope a few have an impact on your editing. Can’t wait for Tuesday and your coverage! ⌚️📱💻
Good to see you here too Rene 👍
Shift Z ftw
Z drag close second.
BTW double click expands the audio so you can do your L and J edits the old way.
Yup, double-click for sure. Three ways to Expand Audio ... Apple wants you to have all the options! 🖱⌨️
Special thanks for the trackpad drag. Keep up the good work.
So crucial. One of my favorite features in MacOS. Thanks for watching!
For British keyboard users the tilde is in the bottom left between the shift and z keys, so a bit easier to reach
Yesssss. Thanks for adding this - gotta help everyone find the Tilde key because it’s so important for working with the Magnetic Timeline! 🧲🎬
@@matthewTobrien Was a game changer for me!
My jaw literally dropped at 11:40, so rest assured the mission of this video is accomplished!
Yesssssss!!! That's the goal! Thanks so much for watching!
Hey. Very useful video. Thanks. I know a little trick - press the command-D then 3 seconds and instead of 00 frames you can press "," and there will be 3 seconds and 00 frames.
Good to know. I’ll give it a try. Thanks for watching and sharing a tip! 👌🏻🙌🏻
Great teacher and content ... just one thing I might suggest ... GET ON WITH IT!!!
Gotta use those all-new chapter markers to skip to the good stuff! Although I’d argue that Jurassic Park / Velociraptor part is every bit as good as the 9 tips. Come on, Mike! 🦖🦕
The TILDE key on my Belgian keyboard is next to the enter key. it says £ `
The crossfade thing didn't work, but after fidling with customizing shortcuts I got it to work.
Tilde key on ISO AZERTY Keyboard Large (with the numeric path included) is "ALT + n key"
Yes! Thank you!
The equivalent to the Tilde-Key Shortcut (at least on German Keyboard-Layout) is "Command" + "
Awesome! Thanks for contributing - going to have an epic list to put together for FCPX’s international users! 🙌🏻
That Tilde key trick - just blew my mind - great video!
So good, right? 🤘🏻🙌🏻
Your tips are really helpful. Please keep them coming. Thanks, Chuck
You're welcome, Chuck! Will do!
Matt, I'll never need your level of expertise... but thank you because I can use a few of these nuggets in my very beginner FCPX life !!
You never know, Robert. 🤷🏻♂️ Keep learning and keep making stuff in FCPX and you’ll be sharing your tips and tricks with others in no time!

Excellent, I didn't know about that "draw to zoom" either, thanks!

That Zoom tool is pretty amazing.. Thanks for sharing these!!

You videos are awesome. Thank you so much for making these. They do help me a lot and they are great to watch. Greetings from Berlin
You're welcome! And I love Berlin! Was there for a weekend back in '07 and have always said it's going to be the first European city I go back to the next time I make it to Europe. If this channel keeps going where it's going I might just have the funds to return! You live in an AMAZING city!
@@matthewTobrien ok...beers are on me when you come over 🙌

Great sequel! Love the crossfade
Haha - thanks!
Matthew, thanks so much. I've learned a lot with this video. I've added several shortcuts to the Notion document where I list my FCPX. shortcuts. My aim is to add at least one new one every day. With your videos, it's easy
And there are sooooooo many I don’t know / remember / use… Glad these are making your list!
I just got THAT reaction again. This sequel is mindblowing :O Thank U.
Haha! So glad to hear it! Thanks for watching!
Yup, BTTF2 is my fav of the trilogy! 🚗⚡️🔥🔥🔥
Sooooo good! 🔥🤓
Okay Loop Playback with the forward slash blew me away!!

That 3 finger drag thing is lit but now you have to use 4 fingers to swipe between fullscreen windows
Was never a fan of Mission Control - check out this vid I did about the one key command you HAVE to use on a Mac (hint - it’s for app switching).

Cntrl D. Mind blown 🤯 Thank you! 🙌✌️💕🇨🇦 and a Best Buy guy told me about the track pad threw finger drag a couple of years ago and it was a game changer 🥰💕🙌
You're welcome! So glad it's going to help your editing. And get that Best Buy guy a gold star - total game changer!
My only question is," How do you know aliens don't exist in Final Cut?"
Cheers
This is such great feedback! Thanks for commenting and watching the vid. So glad you got some value out of it (and maybe a little entertainment, too). 🙌🏻🤘🏻
Great video Matthew!
Thanks, Emilio! So glad it had value for you. 👌🏻✌🏻
The hold Z and square trick really blown my mind 🤑
Isn’t it great?
Great stuff! Have you tried R key and drag across the section you want to remove, then delete. Vs blade and command +] or [.
I haven’t, but I will! Curious to try that method on.... 🤔 Thanks for mentioning it. 🙌🏻🤘🏻
Omg. These tips are amazing! Thank you so much!

Just a couple minutes into this and you’ve already showed me something that is going to absolutely rock my next video. Thank you thank you thank you!
Well what is it??? 😝🤔
Your tips are honesty so valuable. Thank you so much. Good Job!

Great video! Some very helpful tips here. Do you have shortcuts for switching between workspaces? I've been struggling to make this more efficient.
There are shortcuts for accessing Apple’s default Workspaces, but I don’t believe there are any to switch between custom workspaces. I’ll have to double-check, though. Thanks for watching!
Broo let's go!!! Love this.
Cody! Yessssss. Thanks for checking it out Ana dropping a comment - again, can’t thank you enough for making sure I kept the wave going! 🙌🏻✌🏻
the tilde key is left next to de Z key on my macbook pro laptop in The Netherlands..
Awesome! I’ll come back through the comments and catalog all the responses to this.
youve blown my mind with tilde key
Yesssssssss. 🤘🏻
Tilde key on UK qwerty is next to Z
I was wondering for the longest time what happened to the three finger drag…now I know … nerding out RN in Joy lol
Apple randomly...moved it. But I tracked it down!
For spanish keyboard users the tilde is right next to P
Awesome. Thanks so much for adding this. Will compile all of these in a document soon....
Another great video thanks I think I will have to write them down until I get used to using them as old habits die hard :)
Thanks, Chris! And that’s exactly what I did in the early days of learning Keyboard Shortcuts - kept a list of the ones I wanted to learn by the computer so I could quickly refer to it and make it a habit. Thanks for watching! 🙌🏻👌🏻🤘🏻

When synchronizing clips by using audio, is there a way to define which clip will be set as the primary storyline clip ?
Oh how I wish there was. Excellent question. 👌🏻
GRACIAS MIL !!! Por el "truco de la tilde" !!!
You gotta use the tilde / grave modifier to override connections!!!
CONTROL + D TO SET THINGS TO THE BEAT OF THE MUSIC!? IS THIS REAL LIFE!? I COULD HUG YOU!! TYSM!! *subscribes*
So glad this will help you! 🎶🎵
@@matthewTobrien That's right.
Also, I discovered that holding "Shift + Tilda key" gave a permanent 'orange circle' option to the cursor, so it can be useful for anyone just trying to re-arrange their second video line without willing to disturb the top layer at all.
So true! Thanks for sharing. 🤘🏻🙌🏻
Once again, thank you. Really helpful tips
You’re welcome! 🙌🏻
Thanks!

Let me see what I can come up with....
caught myself gasping many times ! great channel!... did i miss it or is there a an easy command out of the z and draw zoom function?
I don't know that you really need to get out of the Hold + Z + Draw to Zoom function. If you need to quickly zoom back out of your timeline, you can use the Command - or Shift + Z. If I'm not understanding your question correctly, let me know!
Midland Pictures Thank you, yes that’s answers it - the old shift z 👍🏼
CTRL + S is the same as left dubble click the mouse (magic mouse)
Excellent point! And a nice add to the conversation. 👌🏻 Definitely faster than doing the key command. And sometimes I do it by accident. 🤣
So happy i found your channel! Thank you for the tips, very useful! Keep it up :)
Will do! And happy you found it, too! Thanks for watching!

@@matthewTobrien Thanks, I'll check that out.
