    Not mentioned, but two shortcuts I use a lot involve replacing a clip on the timeline. Select a clip on the timeline (or a Gap clip), then select a clip from the Library and (either) Option-R to replace the clip on the timeline but keeping the length of the timeline clip, or Shift-R to do the same but the length of the clip on the timeline changes to the length of the source. Fast! If you intend to keep the timeline clip length the same, then all you have to do is choose an IN point on the clip in the Library.

    Great video! I've been using FCPX since v10.0.0, and still learned a few shortcuts I've never used. One comment: #5 at 1:27 - As you show, "M" creates a marker. Alt+M creates a marker and opens the marker's pop-up where you can enter the marker's text and specify whether it is a normal marker, a "To Do" marker, or a Chapter Marker.

      Well since you asked..... how about how to take a video and create a one minute portrait version out of it for Instagram? I’ve seen one but would love to see how you would do it. And....how to really use compound clips. I don’t fully understand how they work. And while I’m on a role here......is there an easy way to clean up your projects in FCPX? For example, before I learned how library, event, and project worked, I created “projects” randomly. So now I have a “project” that isn’t in a “project” and I don’t know how to reorganize and get it into one. I realize this one might be hard b/c yours are not all messed up like mine are and not sure if you could recreate that. Any of those would be great! But what you do is awesome!

    At 3:50 - Slowing a high-framerate clip - You can also try a 'natural' rate. Try selecting the clip and going to the clock-looking icon in the Viewer and choosing 'Automatic Speed'. Instead of displaying, in this case, 240 frames every second, the clip will play at one frame per 'natural' framerate of the Project. Frame-for-frame in other words. Nice and clean if the speed of the motion is good for you.

    At 4 minutes - Once you retime a clip, be aware that if you drag the right end of the colored shelf and drag left or right, you are changing clip's speed whereas if you drag the right END of the clip and drag left or right, you're changing the length of the clip to be affected by the chosen speed. Extra Credit: If the clip is a secondary storyline, the stem from the clip is the center point if you change the speed of the clip by dragging the right end of the shelf. In fewer words, Hold Option and CMD and click in the middle of the clip to relocate the Stem and clip will expand or collapse in both directions centered around the Stem.

      @@Brad_West The project I've started is pretty daunting, but I think it would have been much easier in FCP7. I wonder if it was easier to learn than the new program. I can see this one could be pretty fluid once you have got the language down. My old version of FC wouldn't work on the current machines. I had a look at Premier as I'd heard that's where the Pros went when Apple dropped the new version on them. I didn't like Premier much, so I decided to take the plunge. Today I feel I am drowning, but after gasping enough, I'll get to the surface. At least half the tools in your video will help a lot! I'm glad I came cross it. thanks again.

      That might help you to get started on the right foot 😊👍🏼

    Great video, life is easier now. two more shortcuts very helpful, to delete the section of the clip bring the cursor where you want the trim to be started and hit option+[ it will delete all the footage before the cursor and same for option +] it will delete all the after. its very useful for trimming in single clip. hopefully this makes sense. Great video. More here than in the 5 other FCPX videos I've seen so far. It's painful to switch, but PP makes me feel like I'm editing a dubbed old movie.

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  4 года назад

      Glad it helped! I've given PP a try in the past and it just doesn't suit our workflow as well as FCPX. I feel like I can edit way faster in FCPX too 😊

      @@Brad_West I'd love to see a video (maybe you have it) that shows how to edit a talking head video (for RUclips) with FCPX. In PP, I drop the clip into the timeline, blade and ripple delete until I have the core. Lots and lots of cuts and delete. Literally, two keystrokes. I can't seem to find an easy way in FCPX, yet. Any thoughts?

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  4 года назад

      @@358studios Sure! In FCPX, if you have your talking head on the timeline you can scrub through or play through the clip and hit Cmd+B at all the points you want to cut. To get rid of the parts you don't want, there are two options.
      1. Hitting the delete key - which will remove that part and leave a blank space.
      2. Hit the backspace key and that will ripple delete that section.
      Hope that helps 😊
      Let us know if there are any other topics you'd be interested in seeing videos on, we're always looking for ideas for new videos.

    • @358studios
      @358studios 4 года назад +1

      @@Brad_West I appreciate the information. Thank you. Do you know if there is any way to remap the delete key to the left-hand side of the keyboard? To accomplish the same thing in PP, I remapped ripple delete to F which allows me to activate the blade tool, cut with a click of the mouse as I scrub through the timeline and F (ripple delete) without removing my hand from the mouse or the keyboard. Super fast. Maybe I just need to learn to be more patient. :)
      A video of interest that immediately comes to mind (again you may already have it) is best plug-ins for FCPX and is there a way to get motion graphics like you can via After Affects in FCPX? I'm at the beginning of my research and this journey to switch over, so these things will probably present themselves along the way but thought I'd ask.
      Thanks again for your help.

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  4 года назад

      @@358studios Yeah you can customize all your shortcuts. Click on the Final Cut Pro menu, select Commands, then Customize and you can remap any shortcut you want. 😊
      Thanks for the suggestions. You can use Apple Motion to create and incorporate motion graphics in FCPX. I'll look into creating a best plug-ins video sometime in the future 😊

    The audio handling is one of the best easy to use features on FCPX that give such a professional look and a smoother experience to the viewer. As a heavy After Effects user, when clips come with audio it’s a bit of a pain to always have them duplicated and treat one as the audio and the other as the video, the way FCPX handles it I find it a lot friendlier in that sense (detach or show, expand one of the end, give the viewer a hint of what’s coming or a nice ease-off of what just happened).
    Now... the one thing I can’t really get my head around is, replacing footage. I find it hard and breaks all the time, any pointers on this front?
    Thanks for the video and the shortcuts PDF!

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  4 года назад +1

      Absolutely! FCPX gives you way more audio control than After Effects. 😊
      Can you give me a bit more information on what you are trying to replace? Is it a case of replacing a render from After Effects? For that to work, you need to make sure the format and codec is the same when you re-render from AE. Also, if the original render had audio, make sure the new render also has audio. If not, FCPX won't see it as a suitable clip to replace.
      If you're trying to replace a clip in your edit with another clip, this might give you the info you need: support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/final-cut-pro/ver4e2fcf0/mac
      Hope that helps! 😊

    • @alejmc
      @alejmc 4 года назад +1

      Brad and Donna Thanks for the pointer will take a look at this.
      My main issue with FCPX vs AE replacing files, in AE it’s super easy for example to work with a still image stretched along a layer’s timeline, cut, manipulate, animate, etc and replace all of them later with anything else: a movie file, an image sequence (that plays back like a movie file), so on and so forth. For example, updating a PSD file with updated graphics, if they were used in FCPX, good luck getting that to sync. Even worse if import media, create proxy/optimized, etc files was on... great for keeping it all together, not so great for updating/replacing footage.
      Granted, for that type of workflow I do think Motion is more suited for that but haven’t really tried it properly yet in that situation.
      I think the best way in this case is to plan ahead and work with compound clips, that way anything can be replaced later inside the compounded clips which is then use in a main project’s storyline.
      At the same time, FCPX is truly aimed at very fast video editing and less at compositing, so it definitely favors being able to quickly move, change, drop new things from scratch than replacing or piggybacking after the fact. Example, replacing a clip with another keeps none of the effects of the original one, I find myself copy/pasting attributes very often.

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  4 года назад +1

      @@alejmc Yeah FCPX doesn't have that "alt-drag-and-drop" kind of replace feature that AE has unfortunately. Using compound clips or copy and pasting attributes is probably your best bet. I do all my editing in FCPX and compositing/animation in AE. What you could do is edit any video and audio elements in FCPx and export a video file to work with in AE. Then if you need to change anything, you can change the edit in FCPX and replace that video file in AE to make any compositing and animation changes. That's generally what I do when working with FCPX and AE on the same video 😄
