Hydraulic Jack Release Valve - let it down slowly!

  • Hydraulic Jack Release Valve. Now this may not seem like something that should be shown or taught. But if you’ve never used a hydraulic jack, it can be downright frightening when you turn the release valve and your vehicle comes down as if it were in a free fall on either a jack stand or the floor.

    im having issues controlling the release of my hydrolic jack... release valve/bolt feels stuck or sticky when under load and because of it i cant turn the handle steadily.
    it takes a bit of pressure to get it unstuck but after the pressure is released way too fast
    any tips?

      Were you able to fix it? My Jack does the same thing, mine has an assembly where teeth ride against teeth. The most common type seems to be the hydraulic Jack with low profile and double piston, like the one in this video.

      Same, sometimes it lets me ease into it other times I have to fight to turn it and it lets go all at once. Very fun

      It just takes practice. Unfortunately most individuals only use a hydraulic jack a few times a year, so it’s harder to get a feel for the release value unlike a mechanic that uses theirs on a regular basis. With constant use you’ll get the feel for how much force is needed to turn the handle so the arm goes down slowly.

      Your comment just reminded me of a situation when I was a teenager; I was helping my brother drop a new engine into a 79 Camaro. I was on the lift and controlling the valve. The release was tricky and I nearly dropped the engine when I was trying to lower it slowly. My brother yelled at me - a lot. But the upside was; I learned and no one lost a hand!

    is it bad for the hydraulic jack if you lower it too fast? i recently got a bottle jack and the jack makes bubbly noise like hydraulic fluid swirls inside when i'm lowering it.

    This is why i dont use jack stands properly... i cant find a jack that slowly lowers itself. Its ridiculous. Im not putting my car on jack stands when the car falls down inna freefall manner and my car will likely tip over. Fking ridiculous

    • @YourHomeGarage
      @YourHomeGarage  Год назад

      I enjoy using the brand that I have in this video. As you can see it lowers slowly. However, all brands do operate the same way. Lowering a hydraulic jack does take practice. The release valves can be tight and a mere fraction of a turn means slow to fast when you find that breaking point. This is likely why mechanics/DIY’ers like using their own jacks - they’re comfortable with what they know. But you’re right - it is frustrating, but you’ll get there.

  • @习近平-m5l

    sometimes the release valve is kind of stuck when you turn, then it suddently drop the car

    • @YourHomeGarage
      @YourHomeGarage  Год назад

      The release value will feel like it’s stuck but really it’s not. There is a lot of force on the ram of the jack in order to lift/lower a car. So it does take practice to find the sweet spot to release it when turning the handle. However, head to a store and test out a new one or your exact brand if the have one. This way you can feel if yours is operating normal. And if it truly is stuck, then maintenance is required.

    having trouble with brand new jack. The release valve wont turn left or right so the jack wont raise. any ideas?

    • @YourHomeGarage
      @YourHomeGarage  Год назад

      Turning the valve to the right (clockwise), but without a lot of force, should lock it in position so you can raise the arm. However, if the valve will not turn in either direction and it’s brand new, then return it for an exchange. No use, trying to troubleshoot a new piece of equipment if it’s malfunctioning.

      I want to say “yes” because I’ve never experienced a hydraulic jack that couldn’t be lowered slowly - plus this would be a huge safety issue. But I’m sure someone will provide more details if they have a brand of hydraulic jacks that can’t be controlled slowly when lowering.
