  • It's hard to be without your floor jack. We show you how to fix and rebuild your floor jack, or just about any other type of jack. Most floor jacks have a simple bottle jack that does all the heavy lifting. After pulling this out, the teardown and rebuild process is pretty similar across many brands.

    What I've found is that I like to replace ALL of the seals and O-rings when I go through a floor jack.
    Sadly, manufacturers are more concerned with the bottom line (cost/profit) than they are with quality and almost ALWAYS use inferior parts.
    My local hydraulic repair shop has proven to me that even a brand new (unused) jack can be improved with a simple rebuild with better parts and some attention to detail.
    My guy says he has yet to have one of his floor jack rebuilds come back.
    Ever since he showed me that, any time I have to open up a floor jack (for whatever reason) or even my engine hoist, I go completely through it, deburring anything that needs it, and replacing everything with quality parts. I've yet to be disappointed with this method.
    I LOVE how you went through this process in such detail! Best hyd jack rebuild video I've ever seen on the web!
    You have a natural teaching talent. Thank you for sharing it with us.

    Not supposed to over fill to the top of the fill hole, this will cause a jack to lock up and not go back down. Also, when bleeding air by pumping the handle (loosened off like you're lowering the jack down) you need to leave the fill screw/plug out of the hole. Everything else was good to go.

    • @ajcaiati
      @ajcaiati 8 месяцев назад

      That makes sense, because my NAPA jack fill plug is open with a ball bearing in it. The ball bearing in the fill plug lets the air out while the locking valve is open, and it makes it easy to see the air mixed with very little oil coming out of the system. If I was to turn my NAPA jack upside down, it would let the oil out of the cylinder for the ram through the free floating ball in the fill plug.

    I just want to say THANK YOU so much for this video. My 15+ year old Craftsman 3-1/2 ton floor jack would no longer hold any weight and if it weren't for this video, I would have never had the confidence to tackle the repair. Turns out, the ram seal on mine cracked which is why it would pump up but not hold (no leaks). I simply replaced that seal even though the rebuild kit came with all the O-rings and even the valve bearings. Now works great again! But if it ever develops a leak down the road, I know what to do. So thank you for the great video!

    Great video. It is a gift when an expert can explain things in a way that a non expert can understand. You have that gift. By the way, it is bearing ball, not ball bearing. Everyone makes the same mistake. I was in the bearing business for 22 years. A ball bearing has in inner and outer race with bearing balls inside of it. Sorry. Can't help myself : )

    This is perhaps the best overall video on disassembling and reassembling a floor jack that I've seen on RUclips, and I've watched many in preparation to repair my own jack. I have found no other video that addresses the channels and check valves inside the distribution block. Really well done! If you ever decide to edit, or add to this video, please consider including further detail on disassembling and reassembling the o-rings and seals around the ram inside the pressure cylinder. That could be very helpful! Thanks very much for your efforts on this video!

    yep, that old craftsman jack.....working on one right now. This was a GREAT help. I missed with the "do not adjust" valves and now I have a baseline since I'm assuming these are most likely baseline settings. I had the u joint break and I was able to replace just the joint with a bit of work instead of having to order the entire assembly. I also learned that one of the large allen bolts securing the handle housing is LH....

    I bought a cheap priced Jack off Ebay that was a store return, it was a 3 ton Aluminum jack , when I got it I noticed the U joint piece was missing, I call the people who distributed it and they said even though that part is shown in their breakdown, they no longer sell it, Chinas way of making you have to buy the whole new jack assembly.
    I thought about making a part on my lathe but did not know the thread size, so I find one on Ebay but it says it is for a 3 1/2 ton jack. I went ahead and took a chance hoping it would fit. I get the part and the drive part is a 5/8" square shank so it would not fit the 1/2" square hole in my handle, I took a square file used a micrometer to measure the difference in the sizes, divided that by half and filed one side till I reached that measurement, then I filed the opposite side the same bringing it to .625 thou, I repeated that on the other sides of the square hole. Stuck the handle in and it fit.
    I thought great, it should work now, but no, when you cranked the handle the jack went up a little bit and right back down when you lifted the handle. I thought the idiot that returned it might have taken it apart losing the check balls, then I saw your video and saw there was a check ball in the port where the u joint shaft goes. I save everything when I fix things, I had rebuilt several automatic transmissions in the past, I had 3 sizes, I used your video to determine which ball to use and put it in. Now the jack works. Thanks for your video.

    The one thing I cannot get over is the price of these kits to fix your floor jack. How can these companies justify the cost for rubber o-rings? In most cases the rebuild kit is half the price of the jack you're working on. When I guess looked up one of my jacks for parts for another $20 I can buy a whole new jack.
    You provided some great information I guess I don't know if it really is worth spending this kind of money to fix an old jack.

    • @artsnow8872
      @artsnow8872 Год назад +2

      Pricing for jack repair parts is like anything else (oil, gas, medicines, health care and products, sex toys and aids) -- the sellers will set the price to whatever the market (buyers) will bare. Thus, we have greed and price gouging wherever we go. Some people are so great, are they? Some is good people.

  • @MLeung-vl7we

    Nice detailed video. When the pump is pressurized and under load (supporting weight), is the pressure on any of the seals, or is the load basically on the steel ball bearings "cloging" the return line until manually released? Would supporting a load for a longer duration prematurely weaken a seal because of the pressure?

      Yeah. Shoddy rebuilds just like transmission shops. Mixing new parts and old parts that wear into each other is why transmission shops are always busy. No matter what issue you are having its gonna require a 3k rebuild. Which may only be a sensor or shift solenoid. They capitalize on the customers lack of knowledge and the fact that u can't prove they didn't perform the repairs claimed. It matters if u end up in small claims court.

  • @pcallah3442

    That power unit appears to be a Hein-Werner, good unit, been around a long time, I have the same unit in a jack I've had for at least thirty-five years. I noticed one thing left out and if you're going to do a full tear-down, clean and rebuild. there are allen-head plugs on each side of the unit, sides where the bolt holes are. Inside each you'll find a check ball. Noting special just something to clean out too.

    • @LynxStarAuto
      @LynxStarAuto 10 месяцев назад

      Honestly with these units less is more. The fluid rarely ever see's huge amounts of stress as most folks just lift, and then use jack stands to support the vehicle. Essentially removing the stress off the unit.
      The amount of height and travel is very small, so the fluid never sees extreme temperatures or variances.
      You just want to make sure the exterior of the hydraulic unit is squeaky clean before disassembling, and just remove and service the problematic area and call it a day. Keeping in mind too that most of these manufacturers don't even want to sell you complete seal kits. Rather preferring you discard and replace. So the less intrusive you are, the better you will turn out. 👍🏽

    I wasn’t looking for this - it just showed up in my feed. That said, I was very impressed with the amount of information and detail. I researched this a couple years ago and never learned some of the details you included. I repaired one jack back then and tore another completely apart but never got it to work. I now know why - I didn’t realize there would be ball bearings in every valve and must have lost one. I found one on the floor under a door a year later and suspected that was the culprit but never knew until now for sure. I already knew about the metal screen and was very relieved when you caught your misstep and went back to correct that. I did see that you left out spreading the cotter pin ends however. Overall great video and audio quality. Loved the hint about poking holes in the cardboard for the ball bearings. I’ve used that trick for bolts, screws and such for a while and it’s worth repeating for those that don’t know about it. Keep up the great work! Amazed you don’t have a lot more likes and comments on this video. One other thing - finding rebuilding kits for these can be difficult but I found one guy who has an amazing site who not only sells parts and kits but also has a wealth of information on identifying and measuring parts like O-rings, wipers, washers, etc. hcrcnow.com is the most comprehensive site I’ve found on floor jacks anywhere.

    How do you know or find proper valve screw setting if someone prior messed with the valve screw adjustments?.

  • @TriodeLuvr
    @TriodeLuvr 2 года назад +6

    DO NOT TURN THE ADJUSTMENT SCREWS TO BOTTOM OUT THE SPRINGS! I did that on the safety valve in my Hein-Werner jack, and it permanently compressed the spring. There's no way to get it back to the factory setting now. My advice is to leave the expansion plugs alone unless you know there's a gasket or o-ring in there that's causing a problem.

      Then that spring was faulty and on the verge of failing. Or you have debris in there preventing proper fluid flow and operation.
      The way he did it in this video, is the way all hydraulic repair/rebuild pros do it. If the spring is sticking, you either have a weak spring, or there is junk in there obstructing operation.

    • @TriodeLuvr
      @TriodeLuvr 10 месяцев назад

      There's nothing wrong with the spring, and the areas under the expansion plugs were pristine. Pros do many things that aren't necessarily required because they have to warranty their work and/or avoid the possibility of losing time opening it up again. I adjusted the spring tension so it would lift the front of my V8 F150 without bypassing, and it's still working great a year later. That's all I care about.

      I just want to add that the so called "pros" in my area don't have a clue how to fix these jacks. My local repair guy, who has been in the service business for nearly 40 years, sent three Walker-type jacks to a local company for repair. Every one of them started leaking again less than a month later.

    • @artsnow8872

      Start with 600 grit sandpaper; then, go to 800 grit, 1000 grit, 1400 grit. Wrap sandpaper around a metal or wood rod. The rust pits don't have to be completely gone. The jack oil film should bridge small imperfections.

    Thanks for detalied video. A Q if you have time. My jack is very slow but holds up the lifting arm and it starts after 10-20 pushes and then goes 1mm per push. When I release the valve for the lifting-arm going down the push-valve pops up = it has air-pressure behind it. All the time it does that. I have one little leak in the push-valve down at the botton NOT the piston o-ring just the cylinder o-ring for it. I have cleaned the channels. Is it going in air there? It is new fluid. How much fluid is needed for floorjack cylinder, is it to the opening and the rubber-sealing laying down or standing up?

    What would be the cause of a squeaking noise while pumping? Which parts should be lubricated?

    • @Shoptoolreviews
      @Shoptoolreviews  3 года назад +3

      If it's a squeak from metal to metal rubbing together, then you should just spray some white lithium grease in each of the joints. You may be hearing a squeak from a hydraulic leak within the jack distribution block. This would mean you have some seals that are bad. Thanks for watching.

    Does anyone know where to get one-off o-rings and seals for floor pumps, specifically the wide one that sits at the bottom of the pump assembly at the opposite end of the large gland nut, without buying an entire seal or rebuild kit?

    I have two NAPA Carlyle 3.5 ton floor jacks, and they are less than two years old. I bought them both from NAPA at the same time. One of the jacks has developed a loud snapping noise near the lift cylinder every time the handle is pushed down when the jack is under load. It lifts okay, but this snapping noise is really irritating. The jack is full of jack oil and reaches max height in about 8 strokes. My other jack is nice and smooth, no noise at all. Try as I might, I can not determine exactly where this noise is originating from, and what it would take to fix it. Has any body else had this problem, and does anyone have a suggestion to fix? Thanks to any one for any reply.

    This is good information but a 20+ old jack most likely will not have the seal kit available anymore. My 22yr old 3ton Alltrade floor jack started leaking and the seal kit was discontinued.

      I'd say it would probably come down to how much you value that particular jack, what the cost of buying a replacement jack would be, and what value you place on your free time.
      Potentially you could rehabilitate a quality Craftsman "Made in America" , one of the more expensive HF Daytonas; an inherited jack from a grandparent or parent; or a second hand tool truck jack: for the low cost of a rebuild kit, $50-60(?). Imagine going on FB marketplace, Craigslist, eBay, the local flea market, etc and buying a "broken" vintage jack and get it back in working order

    • @Esuper1
      @Esuper1 2 года назад

      @@Jujoji True. No Harbor jack is going to qualify for that amount of work. An older more solidly built piece may be worth all the time and effort.
